police are , conducting the investigation to avoid a conflict of interest. the jail is run by the sheriff's office. he won't comment till all investigations and potential lawsuits are completed. joyce: as we said the m.e. ruled , the death a homicide. that doesn't necessarily mean a crime was committed. determine if anyone should face criminal charges. kathy: the family of an illinois woman who died in police custody has been granted a large settlement. patrick, it comes out to $1.9 million. patrick: the family of sandra bland settled their wrongful death lawsuit. you may recall, a texas department of public safety officer arrested bland last year during a traffic stop. three days later, she was found dead in her jail cell. her death was ruled a suicide. bland's arrest gained national attention and caused public outrage. bland's mother says the money. >> sandy's not here anymore, so i wanted to make sure that when your next person in custody is there behind those bars, yes, you're here. he would hear me, catch me and he's strong. >> where is he? >> that's him sleeping. >> he's still sleep? kathy: police discovered three other bodies inside the home and nearby. grate confessed to one of the murders. the son of a 71-year-old man shot while watering his lawn is speaking out. >> i am supposed to talk about i don't want to. i think the headline, 71-year-old man shot and robbed while watering his lawn should the enough. kathy: the chicago man was watering his grass last week when two men knocked him to the ground, stole his wallet and shot him. a neighbor's surveillance camera caught the whole incident. the man is recovering and expected to leave the hospital soon but the suspects are still , out there. >> let it be known that those involved who did this had malice in their hearts with full intent to do harm, harm and if it happen to my father, i believe it could've been someone else on the receiving end of that bullet last week. kathy: more than 520 people have been killed in chicago this year alone. the deadliest year in two decades. joyce: rain is heading our way right now and it could impact the morning commute. mark, where are those storms right now? and mouthmouth disease is hitting kn our area pretty hard. we know there have been alerts from schools and daycares in germantown, whitefish bay and wauwatosa. wisn 12 news' melinda davenport shows us ways you can prevent your children from getting sick. >> it's been going around, especially since school has started again. >> it tends to comes in batches. and then occassionally we'll see showing up in kids across our area. and its symptoms can be painful. >> mouth pain or refusal to eat. often then, they'll find the ration the mouth. it usually looks like little red bumps that turn into ulcers. then occasionally they will also, usually they will get the rash on the hands and feet as well. >> physicians say the disease is also highly contagious, but can be prevented. experts say protecting yourself from the disease is as simple as washing your hands. >> keeping your hands washed. keeping their hands washed as best as possible especially , after diaper changes, contact with saliva, kids not sharing nooks. >> at grandma's house daycare in wauwatosa the center's director , says they try to practice handwashing every chance they get. >> we're constantly washing the children's hands. when we notice fevers and things like that, we send them home are contagious or not. >> helping to curb the problem before it gets out of hand. in wauwatosa, melinda davenport, wisn 12 news. joyce: again, those symptoms include fatigue and irritability a sore throat and a fever of , around 101, also blisters might appear on the hands and feet, and inside the mouth. the cdc says the disease usually runs its course in seven to $10 -- seven to 10 days. five-years-old are most at risk, but it can strike older children and adults, too. there's no specific treatment, but doctors can provide over-the-counter meds to help relieve pain and fever. kathy: northwestern mutual buys a new aircraft hanger at mitchell international airport to house its corporate jet. that's according to our partners at biztimes milwaukee. the company paid $3.3 million for the property on the southwest side of the airport off of college avenue. northwestern mutual says it needs the new hanger so it can seven manatees are back where they belong after being rescued from a florida golf course. the huge sea mammals were swept into the golf course pond during hurricane hermine and got trapped. one of them weighed around 1800 pounds. vets gave the manatees a quick check-up before releasing them into the gulf of mexico. a dog owner in denver gets a shocking call. kathy: her dog ate an entire bag of heroin at doggy daycare. here's how it happened. police say a suspected drug dealer threw 17 bags of the drug over the fence of the doggy daycare, where several dogs were lounging. surveillance video shows her dog charlie eating one of the bags off the ground. charlie was rushed to the emergency vet. >> you can't process the fact that your dog ate heroin. i could have lost my dog idiot decided to ponton shows us how crocheting and painting help some cancer patients heal. >> an described their care. patients like pat morrisey. she says she needed something to do while waiting for cancer treatment, so she returned to crocheting. >> 35 years ago, i started an afghan that my grandmother, who was then alive, showed me how to make. >> morrisey found the crocheting relaxing. >> it is a metaphor of many and all of a sudden a beautiful thing comes together. >> so morrisey helped start an art therapy group called companioning hearts. volunteers crochet blankets, paint, and write poems is spreading a message of hope and awareness. take a look. autumn safely was stopped by a stranger in a store in texas. that stranger wanted to take a picture of the shirt she was wearing. it is a heart over her pregnant stomach that reads you're that means she is pregnant after having lost a child in a miscarriage. the woman who took the picture also had a miscarriage and was inspired by the shirt. >> it is god's way of showing his glory. honestly, it is just like, hey, this is something beautiful and something that people need to hear, a story of hope and perseverance. patrick: the facebook post has been shared more than 30,000 times. an update to the story of a millionaire librarian. robert morin worked at the no one knew how much he saved. when he died, he left the school $4
