Welcome to a special edition of today on this monday morning after the Golden Globes from los angeles. Im Savannah Guthrie. Weve got willie geist here. Matt is on assignment heading to the white house and sitting down with the president. Well do the show from the white house tomorrow, and i think we all thought wed be talking about the Golden Globes and inside this sad news about david bowie. Yes. So much talk last night at all these parties. The news rushed through the room that david bowie had died, and, guys, were going down this list of songs. We dont have time to begin to list all his hits. Space odyssey, changes, rebel, rebel. Rebel, rebel. Somebody who really changed the landscape of music. Influenced a lot of the artists of today as well. Absolutely. Its our top story this morning, the passing of apy nearing figure in the world of music for decades. He succumbed to cancer days after he releasing a new album on his birthday. Tributes are pouring in including here in los angeles where fans placed candles on bowies star on the walk of fame. Lets go to nbcs bill neely. Hes in london. Hes got this story this morning. Bill, good morning. Reporter good morning, savannah. David bowie dead at 69, hard to believe. The tributes being paid here in brickston where he was born, messages and flowers, the face of ziggy stardust, south london, of course, where david bowie played his first gigs in pubs and clubs, a legend now lost to the world. Like so much in his life and is surprising, shocking. His Facebook Page announcing he died peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous 18month battle with cancer. His son duncan jones tweeting very sorry and sad to say its true. This is Ground Control to major tom reporter space odyssey a hit in the year of the moon landing that started bowies ascent to stardom. Star man and the iconic ziggy stardust album confirmed his genius above all for innovation and change. He created, sang and acted for six decades, moving across genres, pop rock, soul. Fame bringing him his first number one cowritten with john lennon. But then he had the world dancing. Dancing in chicago surprise. Embracing generations of side. Peace on earth reporter his golden years were the 70s and 80s and never stopped producing 25 albums. I just went on and on and suddenly im 56. So i have to write from this unique perspective of somebody who never stopped being 20. David bowie showed creative artists how to live a career, how to make your art your life. Look up here im in heaven reporter he released his final album black star just last week with the single lazarus and a haunting image of the biblical figure who rose from the dead. David bowie will live on. Reporter in a body of music without equal, a hero to generations of fans. Been said that david bowie was always changing like a chameleon. He wasnt a chameleon because a chameleon changes to blend in. David bowie never blended in. He was perhaps summed up by his song rebel rebel. I bought his first album when i was a 12. I was a huge fan and like all these fans ill miss him. Savannah. I feel the same way, bill. Thank you so much for your story. Lets turn to joe lev, a contributing editor of Rolling Stone and incoming on spotify. Good morning to you. Good morning. First of all, was it well known that he had this struggle with cancer because i have to say the news came as such a shock to me and i think so much of us. Yes. This was not known at all. This was a private matter and its interesting. The album, it would have been reviewed so differently just last friday on his birthday when black star, his latest record, was released. People would have received it so differently if they had known of his illness. And faces down the question of mortality, but the decision to keep all of this private allowed the art to come out, to be evaluated and to speak for itself. Well, lets talk about this art. I mean, it is hard to overstate his contribution to music, to fashion, to culture. What did david bowie do for this world . Well, quite simply he was one of rocks first selfconscious artists. He looked at everything he did as art, the way he dressed, the way he lived his life, his sexuality. He pushed boundaries all the time, and uniquely he was an inspiration to people in the 70s, in the 80s, in the 90s constantly changes. Changes is one of his best known songs. Its a theme song for him, that idea of shifting, of constantly being on the move and embracing all sorts of different sounds, rock n roll, dance music, noise, all these things. Well, i was going to say one measure of somebodys success and impact is how Young Artists and new artists have taken what he did and taken it further. Are there people out there in music today or even in the last few decades who you say, oh, david bowie did that first . Yes. Youre tempted to say everyone, but if you look at say lady gagas first record, you look at this record where she is selfconsciously mimicking david bowies looks, his iconography, the way he dressed because she herself wanted to say right from the start im going to be a shape shifter. Nirvana covered A David Bowie song in a final performance in an mtv live performance. Kanye west tweet that had david bowie was an inspiration to him and, of course works we have madonna, another artist whose career is about fame, celebrity and shapeshifting. Without david bow toe blaze a trail for her, probably not. The in the few seconds i have new record, the song lazarus released on his birthday. His health. It seemed like he was giving that to the art world as well. Thats absolutely right. This is a unique moment. As many, many musicians get older and face mortality, weve seen a lot of records thinking about getting older and mortality abstractly, but in this case specifically, someone who knew the end was coming, who had for the last 18 months lived with that knowledge and decided to face it down with his art, with a record that is challenging, thats been warmly received as A David Bowie record, a classic david bowie record. That is a fitting testament to an artist of this nature. He will be missed. Joe levy. Thanks so much for sharing your perfect think of morning. We thank you. Thank you. Bowies longtime producer put out a statement saying this al number in fact was his farewell to the world. Swan song. Ricky gervais not surprisingly took a shot at sean penn who was not at the globes this. Comes in the wake of the stunning revelation that he secretly met with the mexican drug lord el chapo while el chapo was on the run after escaping from prison. Now, mexican authorities want to talk to penn about that encounter. Nbcs jacob rascon has more on this story. Jacob, good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning. El chapo is back inside the prison behind me, mexicos top security facility where he escaped last july but its what happened in between his escape and recapture with Actor Sean Penn that has everyones attention this morning. It is proof, according to Actor Sean Penn, of of a scoop nobody saw coming. Drug kingpin Joaquin El Chapo guzman, at the time the worlds questions for a Rolling Stone article in his first interview in decades. The reaction on social media has been swift. Many finding it impossible that penn would meet el chapo, eat tacos and drink tequila and talk for seven hours but not turn him in. Mexican Authorities Say penns meeting might have even helped lead them to el chapos hideout in the bloody shootout that ended with his arrest. That and the drug lord owes apparent infatuation with mexican soap opera saturday kate del castillo. In a made for hollywood plot twest del castillo who played a drug lord in a popular soap are a on Sister Network telemundo. She is one of tvs hottest stars. Reporter here she is promoting her show on today last year. What do you do . What does your character do . I kill people all the time. Dont interrupt me. Reporter she also played a drug trafficker on the showtime series weeds. Reporter her connection to the real kingpin apparently started in 2012 when in an open letter on twitter she wrote, mr. Guzman reportedly tried to send her flowers, though she never received any. While mexican authorities have said they are looking at whether sean penn faces any legal exposure in mexico, the focus of american Law Enforcement is getting el chapo to the United States, and they called the Rolling Stone article that el chapo allowed to screen before it was published quote, a sideshow. Willie. Jacob rascon, shank you so much. Shaun henry is executive assistant director for the fbi and lisa bloom is todays legal analyst. Good morning to you both. Shaun, let me start with you. A lot of people saw the photograph of sean penn shaking outraged and wanted to know how did he get so close to the man Law Enforcement has not been able to find . Thats a great question, willie. You know, when i was in the fbi we were actively looking for for el chapo, and i know the resources the u. S. Government but into locating him. Theres been questions about the Mexican Government and if theres been any collaboration with them, if they were xlisit with el chapo, but the resources there and the ability to try and track him down, lots of questions here. I know the u. S. Authorities are very, very interested in talking to sean penn. Yeah. And sean penn himself said he thought the dea may be tracking him as he met and pursued with el chapo. Do you suspect that sean penns meeting had any relationship to the fact that authorities finally did catch up to el chapo . You know, i think thats a high likelihood. U. S. Authorities constantly are looking at tracing digital media, looking at telephones and the like. Penn himself talked about using in which they use them for a day or two and drop them so that they couldnt be tracked, and then theres been some comments in the media by the mexican attorney general that said in fact that was one. Ways they were tracking him, so another issue for for penn to be concerned about at this point. Willie . And lisa, a lot of outrage was directed also at sean penn saying wait a minute. You met with this guy and didnt tell authorities about it. Has he opened himself up to any legal action here . Well, based on the fact that we now know absolutely not. He was acting as a journalist for a magazine. Journalists are allowed to meet with people, even criminals, and it. What he cant do is materially help el chapo. If he gave him a dollar. If he helped him strategize, helped him escape or hide. Then he would be in trouble, but all right. And the u. S. Now saying it wants to extradite el chapo to the United States. We shall see. You both. Thanks. And now to the president ial race with the Iowa Caucuses fast approaching. Republican and democratic races there are tightening.
