morning. we've had a nice couple of days... but moisture from the south will build north overnight and arrive in central iowa with some scattered showers by afternoon and evening. a look at how much rain to expect tomorrow, coming up... now on to the news of the day... led to a shooting at a local fast-food chain... authorities were called out to the mc-donalds on southwest state and oralabor road around 10:30 on saturday night and found two people shot... stephanie moore joins us with an update....steph? police are still conducting interviews but say it appears some bad manners may have led to the shooting outside the mc-donalds... police say when they arrived on the scene they found two people, 18 year old justin phongsavanh and 18 year old nickolas culver suffering from gun shot wounds...both men were taken to the hospital by ambulance.justin has since been released, but nickolas remains in serious but stable condition in the i-c- u... about thirty minutes after the shooting, 34 year old gabriel coco turned himself into the polk county sheriff's office, he is charged with two counts of willful injury... police are still investigating what happened but say through interviews it appears coco didn't like the way the two men were behaving inside the store and followed them out into the parking lot... 'upon interviews with the employees as well as witnesses inside the business we were told the two victims had some type of altercation between them towards the mcdonalds employees.' ankeny police are still investigating and on top of reviewing surveillance video believe there are more witnesses who might have seen what happened.... anyone with information is urged to call ankeny police at 289-5240... a stolen vehicle investigation in benton county sunday morning lead to a startling discovery. a woman's dead body. the sheriff's department was called around four a-m on a report of a stolen vehicle. they found the truck a short time later ... and nearby found the body of a woman whose name isn't being released. a short time later police were called to a nearby road on a report of a man bleeding from his head. 31-year old david miller was arrested and charged with motor vehicle theft. police say more charges could soon be announced against him. an ohio man is in the hamilton county jail... accused of killing his mother. the state patrol stopped 34-year-old burley blankenship on i-35 near dows yesterday morning. he's wanted by cleveland police in connection with the death of his mother saturday night. blankenship is charged with theft and several traffic charges.... and awaiting extradition back to ohio. a police pursuit last night in des moines ended with a crash and an arrest. police were chasing a suspect when he lost control ... hit a light pole ... and then a garage neared ovid and 2nd avenue. two people were injured in the crash ... but not the driver. 22-year old brandon st. peter was taken from the scene to polk county jail. he's charged with theft, o-w-i and interference with official acts. oklahoma state students returned to class today.. while an investigation continues into why a car slammed into a crowd during homecoming this weekend - killing four and injuring dozens.. tonight we are learning more about the woman behind the wheel. jay gray has the latest.. two days later.. police.. and this shattered community continue to search for answers.. and some kind of understanding.. after this horrific crash -- a car.. plowing into the crowd during homecoming festivities at oklahoma state university.. "she -- she accelerated. she never hit her brakes." four people were killed.. business student nikita prabhkar.. professor marvin stone and his wife bonnie.. and little two-year-old nash lucas.. "he was so young and so, he was just such a good boy. he didn't deserve that.." police arrested 25-year old adacia chambers at the scene.. on suspicion of driving under the influence.. her family spoke publicly for the first time since the crash.. " just want to say on behalf of my family i am very sorry for the victims."but they don't believe alcohol or drugs were involved.. "she my have problems underlying that i wasn't area of. chambers' attorney has suggested she has a history of mental problems.. and may have been off her medications when she was behind the wheel.. s/ tony coleman / chambers' attorney 1:08 - 1:14 "i believe either the folks that provided the medication discontinued it or ms. chambers may've discontinued it herself." as the campus.. and community.. try to deal with the effects of the tragedy here.. jay gray - nbc news. bond has been set at a million dollars. chambers is not expected to be released from jail. this morning governor branstad announced the creation of a new inititiative to clear anyone who's been set to jail for a crime that didn't commit ... and clear their names. it's being called the "wrongful conviction division" and will be run out of the office of the state public defender. branstad says the idea is simple ... make sure that the state is getting things right. 55:27 the wrongful conviction division will systemically review and identify potential cases involving wrongful convictions and pursue all legal remedies available to their clients. 55:40 it is also important to note the potential implications regarding racial disparagies in our criminal justice systems 55:49 70% of the dna exoneration have involved defendants who were minorities 55:59 while the wrongful convictions won't be just restrictive to minorities reviewing those cases the creation of this division does represent another step that we can take to ensure accuracy in the iowa criminal justice system. 56:12 the initiative will cost about 34- thousand dollars per year. state public defender adam gregg says that cost is nothing compared to the peace of mind the work of the office will provide to all iowans. he was supposed to be the offensive savior for iowa state football. but now... less than two years being hired... mark mangino is resigning. head coach paul rhoads made the announcement this morning. he says mangino stepped down as offensive coordinator because he didn't agree with changes that were being made. rhoads wouldn't specify what those changes are. this weekend quarterback joel lanning was promoted to starter after sam richardson struggled against baylor. mangino's son tommy remains on the i-s-u coaching staff. while iowa state deals with coaching turmoil ... the sun is shining brightly in iowa city. the hawkeyes jumped into the top ten in the associated press poll this weekend... without even playing a game. the well rested number ten hawkeyes welcome maryland to kinnick stadium on saturday. six months ago the des moines city council tentatively agreed to start a food truck pilot program. that pilot program has now taken flight. coming up next ... find out what the council is talking food trucks again tonight, and what request the food truck operators are making of the and here's a story that isn't going over so well in our agricultural state. find out why the world health organization is ranking red meat right alongside cigarettes when it comes to cancer causes. tonight the des moines city tonight the des moines city council will vote on the future of food trucks in the city ... but all indications are the trucks will be here to stay. it tooks months of meetings and votes earlier this year for the council to approve a food truck pilot program in the city. six months into that program ... it appears to be a runaway success. tonight city council members will vote on whether to continue the program. they received an update on it this morning. the city manager's office says it's received only a few complaints about the program ... and they've had no issues with food truck operators. they say they're being overrun during lunch hour... especially when they park near the sculpture garden... and are asking for one small change to the program nick kuhn, legion of food - "this was based primarily on processed meat causes colorectal cancer." what's more --- the group says there's evidence to suspect red meat -- including beef, lamb and pork -- likely can cause colorectal cancer, as well. "the american cancer society has been suggesting limiting red meat and processed meat since 2002." limit -- not necessarily eliminate. there's a difference between processed meat and lean cuts of beef and pork. experts say those leaner cuts can be important for health. "it contains abundant nutrients that we all really need. it's concentrated protein, all the amino acids for good health, and importantly it has vitamin b12 and iron." the north american meat institute said the new report "defies common sense" in a statement... writing... "the goal here is not just to test, the goal here is to improve teaching and learning." under a new plan, the president is recommending schools use no more han... ... 2 percent of classroom time for standardized tests, that the tests enhance teaching and learning and provide a clearer picture of how students are performing. "learning is about so much more than filling in the right bubble." "we're going to work with states, school districts, teachers and parents to make sure that we are not obsessing about testing." according to a recent study.. students in big city public schools currently take, on average, about 112 mandatory standardized tests between pre-k and high school graduation. while the goal of standardized testing is accountability... many agree it has gone too far....and is often redundant. "it is important that we have accountability and testing but we need to make sure that helps the teacher and the student and the parent know what to do next to make improvements." now a largely bi-partisan push to put the focus back on teaching and less on standardized testing. mark barger nbc news. the iowa department of education is releasing new guidelines for its "career and technical education" programs ... formerly known as vocational education. education director ryan wise says the programs need to be brought in line with the state's broader educational goals ... getting kids into college to earn advanced degrees. to accomplish that the state will begin enacting a list of recommendations from a statewide task force. coursework to provide a smooth transition to advanced programs in the same subject at college. there will also be a focus on pushing kids to go to college ... and helping them find one. but none of that is possible without qualified teachers in the classroom. that's why the department of education says it will make it a priority to begin hiring new technical instructors and providing more training opportunities for current educators. 18 years ago a northwest iowa town celebrated a baby boom with a unique community photo. now all these years later the town of kingsley held a reunion photo shoot. tommie clark has the story. "the class above us didn't have very many kids and so it was kind of like the baby boom of 1997 and so that's why we decided to line all the kids up and take a picture," said kingsley-pierson senior, kiana phelps. the nafe family wanted a special memory for their first child, so they spoke with other families from the area and decided to take one big picture of their newborns together. "it just gives them memories and a picture to have. i know that we that they get something out of it too," said parent, verlyn nafe. 17 babies were lined up in their carriers in front of a limo that the nafe family owned through their limo service. a couple kids moved away over the years, but the majority grew up together in kingsley, iowa. "it's cool to see everybody grow up and mature and see who they become today and hopefully remember these people for years to come," said kingsley-pierson senior, scottie plendl. sunday, 14 of those same kids got together to recreate the picture. "i can remember just in first grade and what not looking at the picture and wondering who all that was and so now it's pretty cool 18 years later that we're taking another one," said kingsley-pierson senior, scottie plendl. after all these years they say it's great to get together to take this picture before they all split ways and some go off to college.
