Michael phelps made his rio debut in spectacular finish swimming second leg of the relay phelps burst tgh team after an incredible turn off the wall giving his team the lead and the gold. His mother, fiance and newborn son, boomer, cheering from the stands. On the womens side, superstar Katie Ledecky made it look easy smashing her own record and it wont even close finishing world record. Her world record just one of many sunday night. And breaking the record for 100 meter butterfly defeating the previous champion who came in third. To be at the olympics again is amazing and all i wanted was to get a medal. Im extremely happy with that. And earlier in the day it was the end of an era on the court. For the first time in their olym william sisters lose. Venus and Serena Williams losing their first ever olympic match as a duo. The threetime gold Medal Winners falling in the opening round to the czech republic. Theres a little bit of moisture starting to appear on the camera lens. This morning one olympian is recovering after suffering severe injuries flipping over her handle bars in a terrifying accident. Shes down. The 33yearold dutch cyclist time. The wet pavement a possible cause of her horrific crash tweeting from her hospital bed, she says im now in the hospital with injuries and fractures but will be fine. Most of all super disappointed after best race of my career and this week all eyes are on the u. S. Gymnastics team led by simone biles who even has a move named after her. He started shedding tears and then ryan started shedding tears and thats one of the coolest races to be part of. Being part of the 400 free relay was a dream of mine and ive been on the good side and bad side of it. Im happy we were able to win that relay as a team. Win gold in the 400 relay again. Your son was in the audience. How awesome was that . I was trying to find him during the awards ceremony. I finally found him. He was asleep for the race. If not, ill replay it when hes old enough. They start to play the National Anthem and the flag goes up and for all of the right reasons, you lost it. Ive heard the National Anthem plenty of times before and ive received awards before as they played the National Anthem but this was different. Just the emotions kind of manifested themselves on the podium and the tears started rolling. How did it feel knowing that not only were you doing something amazing for this wonderful relay team, for Michael Phelps, he got number 18 thanks to a group effort with you guys. Phenomenal. Hes a great leader and a great athlete. He kind of gives a sense of confidence to other swimmers so when im around him i feel stronger and stand a little bit taller. Feel a little bit more confident. Can i tell you, your face during that ceremony, thats why we love covering the olympics. That emotion of an athlete and being able to let out that kind of emotion. Its so great. Congratulations. Delta statement urging all passengers to check the status of their flights while the issue is being assessed. Beginning at olympic trials. He did it. Phelps was the top qualifier in all three of his individual after leaving a casino in september, 2014, phelps was pulled over and arrested for dui. With mounting pressure from family and friends, phelps would eventually check himself into a rehab clinic in arizona. You checked yourself into the meadows for 45 days. You dont know if youre an alcoholic. Maybe a binge problem. Did you check yourself into drinking problem or a Public Relations problem . I was at the point in my life where something needed to change and i needed to figure things out. Phelps says he figured those things out and now its back to the pool. How is training going now . Whats the difference . I want to be here. Thats the difference. I had no desire to go to workout before. I want to retire how i want to retire. And i have a great opportunity to do that. I decades. And the results are speaking for themselves. Phelps now has the lead for the americans. Looking again like the most dominant swimmer in olympic history as his mother, fiance, and son, boomer, cheer him on. And like the rest of us, waiting to see the limits of michael so we know what hes done so far. Lets take a look at the rest of his program for this week. Heres what happens.
