>> by that time they're all laughing. they know that. >> by the way, i was watching the giants game. i can't believe i have any fingernails left. it was 49-49. everyone kept scoring. it was practice and everyone kept scoring. in the last second, the saints kicker kicked his longest field goal. the final score was 52-49. like giants fans were upset, but it was exciting. >> we are happy for kansas city. >> oh, yeah. >> we of course would have loved our mets to win. but kansas city royals. they beat them after 12 innings. the final score 7-2. but royals, you have to be happy for the kansas city. it's the first time they're champions in 30 years, hoda woman. >> it was great to see the fans. they were waiting for their guys to come out. they chanted that they loved them all the way out. it was beautiful. >> we were all touched this morning. i don't know if you had a chance to see brad pitt and angelina jolie interviewed by tom brokaw. they were really moving. we see pictures and video, but you rarely see that interaction. and they did talk about angelina's many surgeries. she went through a double mastectomy. >> and her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed, too. >> there was no vanity to my wife's approach. it was mature. it was an excitement to wear, this is our life. it. it's a strength in that. it's just another one of those things in life that makes you tighter. she was doing it for her kids and for her family. so we could be together. it was trumped everything. trumped everything and anything. >> i think forasmuch as he speaks about my strength, i knew that he made it very, very clear to me that what he loved and what was a woman to him was somebody who was smart and capable and cared about her family. that it wasn't about, not about your physical body. that he was on my side and that this wasn't something where i was going to feel less of a woman because my husband wasn't going to let that happen. >> it it was beautiful. >> it was beautiful. >> i give that marriage all the hope in the world. >> who'd have thought it at the beginning, you know? you're clearly the mom. you're clearly the daughter? >> she's very much the mom. >> i'm a controlling mom, and i've learned that i have to get over that. because i did not realize this is my grownup daughter. she has made great decisions. i need to take a step back and stop the controlling issues. this is not just about mother and daughter needing help, but it's my own issues and a journey of self-discovery. >> i've heard, i love you too much to deny you the privilege of making mistakes. >> we have to let our children learn. >> we do. >> most moms want a redo. and also have a redo. >> you want your daughter's life to be better than mine. >> that's right. that's where the perfectionism comes in. >> you never questioned your mother's love? >> yes, my dad who's 92 lives disease. passed away and my sister who passed away. most of the time. >> a lot of times when this comes upon us, we know it's coming, but even so, we feel ill-prepared. what's first thing we should do to get ready? >> you should plan ahead, have conversations with your loved are. if you're in a crisis, in a hospital is usually how that happens. talk to the discharge planner. you're going to have to do legwork. >> before the person is out of the hospital. >> and contact the area agency on aging about community-based care and go to the elder care locater and find your area agency on aging. you can also get a geriatric care coordinator. >> through your insurance? >> usually it's not covered. but this is really helpful for long-distance caregivers. >> first you say you have to have a team. you can't go it alone. >> exactly. i can do anything at this point, but i can't do everything. with other people, other family members, volunteers from a hospice or respite organization. you can also look at crystal care. my mom's hairstylist came to the house sometimes to make it easier when i couldn't get her there. >> so many people want to be helpful? >> people are offering. you don't take them up on it. when people offer, say yes. so connect with other caregivers. nobody quite understands it like somebody else who's going through the same thing. so we learn the most from each other. we get the most tips from each other. go to a local support group. again that area agency on aging can give you a list or the hospital can give you a list. if you can't go in person, get online. there are all kinds of support groups and community boards, aarp has a community online that you can post questions and get answers. we learn the most from each other. >> the trouble is, if you're a caregiver, you don't have much caring for to go to these things. >> you were talking about technology, maybe that's something you can do from home, these apps and things. >> we're juggling so much, in my lives, my parents' lives. you can do it better if you organize. we have to be efficient. there are all kinds of apps now. i need a grocery i.q. but aarp has a new care giving app specifically for this. you can even create a medication list by taking pictures of the medication bottles. communicate, share calendars. that is really helpful to get it all together. >> one of the most important things is care for yourself. because sometimes you can't give what you don't have. >> that's the hardest part. >> exactly. we don't expect our cars to run without gas on empty, but we expect ourselves to. that doesn't make sense. it's not selfish to take care of yourself. you have to take energy in. gives you joy, and take care of your health as well. >> the joy is nonnegotiable. >> you say be kind to the caregiver. thank you so much. >> absolutely, great ideas. don't miss our favorite things. they're next. >> but first, this is "today", on nbc. >> what she said. so how ya doing?
