so we'll certainly have our fair share of scattered showers and storms, localized downpours throughout the day. temperatures upper 70s to near 80 degrees. a warm and humid start. we'll keep that humidity around as we go throughout the day. warm week ahead of us here. we break out of the rain today, and we go for 80-plus tomorrow. look like that will stick around throughout much of the work week, although we do turn it down as we get into the weekend. main threat with these storms today localized downpours. a few storms may have gust yeah winds. more on that in forecast ahead. >> sarah: time now for fast track traffic with kris anderson in for danielle gersh. >> kris: good morning. the roadways wet, so take your time this morning. the expressway, traffic moving smoothly. let's go to the maps. still early. not a lot to talk about. ten minutes from the split up to the tunnel. looking good if you're south as well as 3, 24 and 95 connecting with 128. no slowdowns to report. pike is clear, looking good. north of the city. everything looking good heading into boston. route 1 in saugus smooth sailing. most of those work crews have cleared away. you should have no problems getting into boston if you're on the roads right now. take a look at those drive times. show you what you're dealing with. 12 minutes 128 to 93, and about 11 minutes 128 to the zakim. back to you. >> christa: right now we begin with breaking news out of new jersey. [explosion] an explosion as a bomb squad t that appeared to condition and the bombs near a transit station. also breaking, f.b.i. agents are now questioning five people in connection with saturday's explosion in manhattan after a traffic stop. >> sarah: right now investigators are trying to determine if these incidents are connected. jennifer eagan is here with more. >> jennifer: sarah, five people, as you mention, were in that car that was pulled over. the "new york times" is reporting an official told them those five people may be from the same family and may have been heading to the airport. an explosive discovery in new jersey. a backpack filled with bombs found at a transit station in elizabeth. [explosion] one of the devices exploding as a robot worked to neutralize the threat. authorities say two men found the backpack in a trash can near that train station and a pub. when they looked inside, they found wires and pipe bombs so they called police. >> if that pub was crowded and there was a lot of people maimed or killed many, many people. >> jennifer: the mayor does not know if elizabeth was the target. the person who put the bombs in the trash may have been trying to get rid of it. >> the people doing this, they have no value on human life, and it's really difficult to understand their rationale. >> jennifer: the explosion prompting authorities to suspend amtrak service in elizabeth and concerned that an active terrorism cell could be at work in the new york/new jersey area. authorities stopped a vehicle of interest in saturday's new york blast just before 9:00 sunday night near the verrazano bridge. right now five people are being questioned by the f.b.i. and in manhattan, surveillance video shows this same man at two new york locations, one where a bomb went off and another where a suspicious device was found. 29 people were injured in the explosion in chelsea saturday night. a bomb set off b >> ran outside and saw glass, people screaming and chaos outside. >> jennifer: authorities found another device that appeared to be a pressure cooker with wiring and a cell phone taped to the side. >> a bomb exploding in new york is obviously an act of terrorism, but it is noted to international terrorism. in other words, we find no isis connection, et cetera. >> jennifer: a few hours before that, another explosion mentioned a moment ago, no international terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the incidents in new york and new jersey. there is an increased police presence across new york city today, including additional state troopers and members of the national guard. these threats come as world leaders are arriving there for the united nations general assembly. in the newsroom, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: the bombing in new york city bringing back memories of the boston marathon bombing. experts say there are some similarities. victoria warren continues our team coverage now. vicki? >> victoria: you can't help but think about what happened here at the finish line. this morning top investigators from the boston marathon bombing are weighing in. on new york city streets, an explosion. then a second device found made from wires and a pressure cooker. >> it's all very familiar. >> victoria: the similarities hauntingly reminiscent of the 2015. >> you have improvised explosives. the discussion seems to be about pressure cookers. it brings back a lot of vivid memories of the boston marathon. >> i can tell you they're doing the same things we did following the marathon. they're looking at all the evidence. >> victoria: the former head of the state police and the former boston police commissioner say new york city investigators have a monumental task ahead of them and a massive crime scene, especially given the nature of how pressure cooker bombs explode. >> they'll be piece of evidence they can locate on the streets. we found it in boston on buildingtops, you know, on adjacent streetways. >> victoria: one big difference: in new york, they have a bomb that didn't go off, and that could hold vital clues, and just like in boston, surveillance cameras are everywhere. >> the biggest clue came from video. frankly, it is the most important piece, this digital evidence that we can access now, is the single most important >> victoria: obvious similarities, but thankfully also some major differences. here in boston more than 200 people were hurt, and there were three people one of its so-called soldiers is responsible for a stabbing at a minnesota mall over the weekend. a man attacked nine people with a knife at that the f.b.i. has been searching the suspect's apartment to verify that claim made by isis in a statement. police say during the attack, the suspect asked victims if they were muslim. he was eventually shot and killed by an off-duty officer. none of the victims' injuries are considered to be life-threatening. we invite you the stay with the news station for continuing coverage of the bombing in new york. we'll have continuing coverage new york at 6:00 a.m. >> sarah: a man is fighting for his life after being shot outside a nightclub on allston. it happened near the mirage boston nightclub late last night on linden street. someone shot the victim multiple times and drove off. right now he's in critical condition. investigators believe there was some sort of altercation that led up to the shooting. >> there's always a.cations when alcohol is involved and everything else. >> any time we have anyd violence, especially involving guns, individuals are now fighting for their live, it's always a concern to us. >> sarah: so far no arrests have been made. >> christa: this morning the patriots facing a quarterback crisis. jimmy garoppolo will miss thursday's game against the texans after hurting his shoulder. now, the pats may have to rely on their third-string quarterback. let's go to 7's john cuomo live continuing with their next-man-up mentality until tom brady can come back. the patriots' fans are completely confident. facing a judge. police say bradford kessler lost control of his s.u.v. and tomatoes restaurant back in march. the 55-year-old has been charged with vehicular homicide. two people were kill and seven others were injured in the crash. kessler's attorney says his physical condition could not have prevented the crash. >> christa: 5:11. we're off to a busy start. still ahead, students returning to okay. welcome back. it's 5:14. it's mud morning. some of us seeing some rain out there to start off. >> sarah: saw some sprinkles yesterday. we're hoping for them for the yard, chris. >> chris: more than sprinkles needed at this point. we're getting it. for some of us torrential rain across parts of new hampshire and central and western mass so far this morning. 72 degrees in boston. you know we have the warmth. we have the humidity, as well work dew points running close to 70 degrees. so it's a muggy air mass in place. plenty of moisture to work with. we're just ringing out some downpours north and west of 4 the wind is out of the south. that stays with us. flood advisory in effect west of nashua, new hampshire, stretching back into the southwest corner of new hampshire and into portions of northwestern mass out near athol, orange and as well as greenfield. this is where the bulk of the heavy rain has been. locally one to two inches of rain. yes, very beneficial for parts of manchester, new hampshire, cob -- concord, new hampshire, back into ashburnham. per hour rain amounts dropping out of these showers and storms rolling on in. that goes all the way down to the mass pike just to the east of springfield right now. take a look at the wind speeds. once in a while you see some of these brighter greens showing up. so embedded in some of these thunderstorms rolling on through have been some gusts about 30 to 40mph. not overpowering, but a few of these storms with gusty winds. follow the line of the showers and storms. this batch right here, a lot of that is going to go north and west of boston. but i am optimistic that down into southeastern mass we'll have a chance to get some scattered downpours in here throughout the day as we have a long trail of moisture that has to work on in. so the downpours, showers and thunderstorms will be scattered about throughout the day. and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain. sometimes it's too much of a good thing when you have a lot of water vapor in the atmosphere. you can really ring out torrential rains. that gives you a quick inch or two of rain. today, tonight and tomorrow. still some leftover scattered showers and storms out there tomorrow morning. then we really begin to dry it out as we get into tomorrow afternoon, especially away from the coastline. i think by the afternoon we'll see partly sunny skies. take a look at the forecast for tomorrow and we will enjoy a nicer day in the afternoon. i do expect partly sunny skies by this afternoon. look at the warm weather here. temperatures generally running >> kris: never fun on a monday morning to begin with, but when you're dealing with wet roads, be extra cautious. the expressway, you see the lights moving smoothly into boston. let's go to the maps. if you're heading out, about ten minutes from the split up to the tunnel. so things are looking good south of the city, in fact, routes 3, 24 and 95 connecting with 128, you see a little slowdown here as you get close to the ex the pike, everything looking good as you head from framingham all the way into boston. even as you get closer to the city, you see a little slowdown there butting in too significant. north there is an accident that just popped up right here in lowell, right at 495. so that one could cause some slowdowns here, but even as you get closer down into boston, smooth sailing. route 1 in saugus, everything looking good. now would be a great time to head to work, school, wherever you need to go. take a look at those drive times 12 minutes. 11 minutes 128 to the zakim bridge. back to you, guys. >> christa: breaking news in new jersey. >> sarah: an explosive discovery near a transit station in elizabeth. authorities find five devices in a bag left in a trash can. a robot investigating the devices accidentally detonating one of them. >> christa: so this also comes after those two other explosions that we saw over the weekend in the new york area. let's go to jennifer eagan with that device that exploded in elizabeth, new jersey, was first picked up by two men near a train station. police say the men found a backpack in a trash can and looked inside and found wires and pipe bombs. they dropped it in the street and called police. the bomb exploded as a robot worked to neutralize the threat there. the explosion suspending amtrak service in elizabeth and parts of the northeast corridor. the city's mayor does not think elizabeth was the target. something like this, you have to wonder the thoughtfulness of humanity and their perspective on the human life, which is in their minds a real negative. and as we spend all day trying to make it better, they spend all day trying to make it worse. >> jennifer: that explosion comes after a bomb injured 29 people in new york city on saturday and another device went off in new jersey at a charity run. right now the f.b.i. is questioning five people after a traffic stop last night. in the newsroom, jennifer >> sarah: bill belichick is digging deep into his playbook. the patriots are facing a bit of a quarterback crisis this morning. it's next man up for the pats after jimmy garoppolo went down with a shoulder injury yesterday. the question now: who is next? chris: we haven't talked much about that over the last several months. we have a lot of rain across parts of southern new hampshire. south and west of manchester, back the hall list, new have already picked up one to two inches of rain this morning and localized downpours that are ongoing right now from fitchburg up into manchester, new hampshire, getting close to nashua right now as this whole band continues to press off to the east-northeast. likely going right over 495 within the next half hour to an hour. soaking rains in fitchburg, leominster, back into gardner and westminster, as well. then down toward the mass pike. still west of the 84/mass pike exchange. east-northeast. the bulk of this will stay to the north and west of boston, but we still have tons of moisture to go through and a long day ahead of us in terms of dealing with scattered downpours. beneficial rains for a lot of towns as some locations pick up a quick one to two inches of rain. however, when you get too much too fast, it can lead the localized flooding on the roadways. a couple storms may have strong wind gusts with them. a few storms have gusts 30 to 45mph so far this morning. taking you through the time stamp here, going through the entire day, however, we'll be in and out of downpours throughout the day with scattered showers and storms. that continues tonight into tomorrow morning. maybe a leftover shower or thunderstorm into southeastern mass and we have the dry i out tomorrow afternoon. soupy air mass in place. low 70s. temperatures right now, dew dew points close to 70 degrees. no lack of good. south of the city, it's about 1i way up to the tunnel. you see some slowdowns. the red just popped up. there it's increased now as we speak. 3, 24, 95, slowdowns here in the milton area as you get on to the expressway there. turnpike is looking good, heading all the way into boston. no problems the report. there take a look at those drive times. show you what you're dealing. with we saw the morning, police rescue a man in a very tight spot. in narragansett rhode island, this man's head was stuck between the rocks on a jetty. firefighters say the man became stuck because he dropped his phone and was trying the reach it. they rushed in to free the man before the tide came in. they had to think outside the box. >> olive did the trick. we managed to spray him down and apply a lot of olive oil and we were able to dislodge him. >> christa: rescue crews freed the man after two hours of work. he was taken to the hospital. he's expected to do okay. >> a bear is doing damage in a chicopee neighborhood. police posted pictures of some of the damage. the bears destroyed bird feeders picture lives close to the river. police are urging to report any incidents of wild animals roaming in their yards. >> christa: u.mast amherst will honor murdered journalist james foley. his parents will speak at the school. foley earned a master's degree at umass. he went to syria in 2012 to cover the war but was captured and killed by isis militants two years later. today is the second day of opioid awareness week. president obama is calling on all americans dangers of using heroin and prescription painkillers. statistics show the number of deadly overdoses from the drugs has qoopled since the late 1990s. >> sarah: president obama's trip to the u.n. begins today. he has several strikes on rebel-held neighborhoods. >> christa: we have new details on a deadly bus crash that happened in north carolina. federal investigators are going to be checking out the tires of a charter bus that was junior college football players. four people were killed, including two players from clinton college. and the coach's ten-year-old son after a tire blew out causing the bus to hit an overpass. 42 other people were injured. >> into the median. it did miss the concrete columns that basically support the bridge. this is probably one of the most tragic accidents because i put it in this context, you have young people, and although starting life out. >> christa: no other vehicles were involved in that crash. >> sarah: a major gas leak at the colonial pipeline causing shortages and price hikes at the pump. officials say gas prices will go up as much as 20 cents per gallon along the east coast. it comes after 250,000 gallons of gas leaked from the pipeline last week. alabama and georgia have declared a state of emergency because of a gas shortage. staying with 7 healthcast, a who have an internet addiction may be at risk for mental health problems. researchers in canada surveyed college students about their internet use. they found that those who spend the most time online had more trouble dealing with their day-to-day activities. they also had higher rates of [explosion] five explosive devices located in new jersey discovered in a backpack at a train station. >> christa: one of those devices exploded as a bomb squad robot was trying to >> sarah: all of this is happening as the f.b.i. and new york police are investigating a bombing in manhattan. they have surveillance video of man at the site of the bombing in chelsea. he was also seen at the same location where a pressure cooker device was found. we have live team coverage of the terror attacks. so let's begin with 7's dan hausle live in new york city. with the overnight. dan? >> dan: well, a lot of big developments overnight connected to the bombing here in chelsea. for questioning after a traffic stop under the verrazano bridge. and an elizabeth new jersey, about 25 minutes away from here overnight, five pipe bombs found in a backpack by a couple bar patrons looking through a garbage can. they see wires. they see all these electronics connected in. there they call investigators. one of those bombs went off at about 1:00 a.m., but fortunately it was under controlled circumstances. an explosive discovery in new jersey. a backpack filled with bombs found in elizabeth. [explosion] one of the devices exploding as a robot worked to neutralize the threat. authorities say two men found the backpack in a trash can near that train station and a pub. when they looked inside, they found wires and pipe bomb, so they called police. >> if that pub was crowded and there was a lot of people, there it could have severely injured, maimed or killed many, many people. >> the mayor says he doesn't know if elizabeth was the target in the trash may have been just trying the get rid of it. >> the temperature who are doing this, they have no value on human life. and it's really difficult to understand their rational. >> dan: the explosion prompting authorities to suspend amtrak service in elizabeth and parts of the northeast corridor. law enforcement officials tell nbc news they're concerned an active terrorism cell could be at work in the new york/new jersey area. authorities stopped a vehicle of interest just before 9:00 sunday night near the verrazano bridge. right now five people are being questioned by the f.b.i. right now surveillance video shows the same man at two locations, one where a bomb went off, another where a suspicious device was found. 29 people were injured sunday night, a bomb set off by a flip phone. >> ran outside, saw glass, chaos outside. >> dan: authorities found and a cell phone taped to the side. >> a bomb exploding in new york is obviously an act of terrorism, but it's not linked to international terrorism. in other words, we find no isis connection, et cetera. >> dan: a few hours before that, another explosion at a charity run in new jersey. so you have pipe bombs found in new york, pressure cooker new jersey, the pressure cooker bombs found here in new york. that surveillance video apparently shows one man leaving a device here in chelsea and then about four blocks away walking up with a suitcase, leaving the suitcase. two other people went up and took something out of the suitcase, leaving that and walking away with the suitcase. investigators trying the find that man. so far they haven't released the england." >> christa: dan, thank you. the bombings in the new york area bringing back memories of the attacks on the boston marathon. experts say there are some similarities in these cases. so for that part of the coverage, we'll head live to the boylston street finish line, and here's 7's victoria warren. >> victoria: good morning, christa. you can't help but think about what happened here at the finish line. now this morning the top investigators from the boston marathon bombing are weighing in. explosion. then a second device found made from wires and a pressure cooker. >> it sounds very familiar. >> victoria: the similarities hauntingly reminiscent of the boston marathon bombings in 2013. >> they're looking at improvised explosives. it brings back memories of the the same things we did following the marathon. they're looking at all the evidence. >> victoria: the former head of the state police and the former boston police commissioner say new york city investigators have a monumental task ahead of them and a massive crime scene, especially given the nature of how pressure cooker bombs explode. >> they'll be collecting every piece of evidence they can locate on the streets. we found it in boston on building tops, you know, on adjacent streetways. >> victoria: one big difference: in new york, they have a bomb that didn't go off, and that could hold vital clues, and just like in boston, surveillance cameras are everywhere. >> the biggest break came from video. quite frankly, it is the most important piece, this digital evidence that we can access now, is the single most important piece of evidence. >> victoria: so definite similarities, but thankfully a major difference because here in boston we had more than 200 injuries and three people died at the finish line bombing. new england." >> sarah: isis says one of its so-called soldiers is responsible for stabbing at a minnesota mall. a man attacked nine people with a knife at the mall in st. cloud on saturday. the f.b.i. has been searching the suspect's apartment to verify the claim made by isis in a statement. >> the stabber ran by. somebody was stabbed right outside the store. >> just charged me with the knife. he said, "are you a muslim? are you a muslim?" how do has a knife hampshire so far this morning. and the the heaviest rain now pushing to the south and east of nashua, new hampshire, right into methuen, and this is going the track toward the seacoast of new hampshire right along getting close to that 495 belt. basically from littleton to chelmsford, westford, all the way back to tyngsborough. rally soaking rain in tyngsborough, stretch entering leominster. this is the strongest storm. even some lightning with this storm just to the west of worcester. now entering the western edges of the city of worcester right there. and with this stronger wind gusts aloft at 30 to 40mph. you'll see these lighter greens showing up close to spencer. we have a few gusty thunderstorms. again, the nature of the game is scattered. so they're in and they're out, but the towns that do get hit will see a soaking rain. and you notice some more showers and storms beginning to develop south of long island. that's going to be promising across eastern mass. so you have a few more downpours across eastern mass, as well. i say promising, not that you want to drive, but you need a good, soaking rain. a couple storms may contain some strong wind gust, but i think that's few and far between. that's more isolated. what's more widespread will be showers and storms will locally heavy rain. we continue that theme tonight into tomorrow morning and by this afternoon, we start the dry it on out for a lot of us, partly sunny skies return and temperatures warm going ahead. you know it's a mild and muggy start when temperatures in the fall are starting off in the low 70s. meteorologically speaking it's fall, mid-september here. 70 in soupy air mass in place. that's the weather that will work on in beginning tomorrow afternoon. 75 to 81 this afternoon. scattered showers and storm, localized downpours. same case overnight tonight. lows falling back mid to upper 60s. then we transition out of it. we'll lower the humidity wednesday and thursday, low to >> dan: good morning. this explosion happened in elizabeth, new jersey, about 25 minutes south of here. it happened after a couple of men found five pipe bombs outside a train station. police say these guys had just left a bar and were looking through trash where they found a backpack, thought it might when they looked inside, they found pipe bombs and wires. one of those pipe bombs exploded as a police robot named jinx was working to neutralize the threat and cut a couple wires. the explosion forcing officials to suspend amtrak service in elizabeth and parts of the northeast quarter. still, though, that city's mayor says he doesn't think elizabeth was the target of the bombs. >> you see someone do something like this or some group do something like this, you have to humanity and their perspective on the human life, which is in their minds a real negative. as we spend all day trying the macit better, they spend all day trying to make it worse. >> dan: this explosion coming after a bomb injured 29 people in new york city. surveillance video showing the explosion and people running for cover. police say this bomb was placed in a metal dumpster, which may have been the reason it didn't more serly explosion, police found another suspicious device nearby. this was a pressure cooker with wires and a flip phone attached to it. remember, earlier in the day on saturday, another device went off, this time pipe bombs at a charity run in new jersey. right now investigators are questioning five individuals caught after a traffic stop near the verrazano bridge. they are saying they believe it's connected to the bombing. no one arrested so far, but they are pursuing is this surveillance video that shows one particular man, and he's dropping off things both at the location of the chelsea bombing here and the four blocks nearby where that suspicious device was found. right now they're just looking at it. we're told they're very interested in talking to the man seen at both locations. dan hausle, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: dan, thank you so much. 6:35. a check of the day's other top stories on your m patriots' q.b. jimmy garoppolo expected to miss time as he recovers from a right shoulder injury. garoppolo was injured when he was hit late in the first half of sunday's win over the dolphins. he did not return to the field. according to reports, he suffered an a.c. joint sprain. so with tom brady still suspended, rookie jacoby brissette will likely start thursday's game against houston. breaking overnight, a man fighting for his life after being shot outside a nightclub in allston. this was on lyndon street near victim several times and drove off. right now the victim is in critical condition. >> sarah: happening today, the driver of a car that crashed into a restaurant in newton will face a judge. police say bradford casler slammed his car into sweet tomatoes restaurant in march. he has been charged with vehicular homicide. two people were killed and several others injured in the crash. casler's attorney says his health and phy crash. group councilors will be available at lincoln-londonderry high school after a teen is struck and killed by a commuter rail train in newton. police say 14-year-old eli pilot died after he was hit by a train on the framingham-worcester line. the teen was standing on the inbound track when he was hit friday night. police do not suspect foul play. the victim's mother released a statement saying we, his family, want everyone to know how much we have received an support offered as we grieve the loss of a dearly loved son, mother, nephew and grandson who we loved with all of our hearts. >> christa: let's go to the latest in the race for the white house, and senator elizabeth warren spending the weekend in ohio campaigning for hillary clinton and hoping to reach out to younger voters. warren emphasized crit's plan the make college debt-free for americans. and she continued her criticism of donald trump. >> a selfish low his own interests ahead of everyone and everything else. a man who will not be president of the united states. >> christa: republican vice presidential candidate mike pence was also in a battleground state yesterday. he spoke to a florida church about his christian faith. >> sarah: lady gaga showing her poker face. super bowl? "they are models of inspiration." with "impressive results" and "eye-catching educational gains." it's turned my son's life around. narrator: "charter schools amount to hope" for kids all across massachusetts. question 2 will give parents more choices and result in more funding for public education. for stronger public schools. >> dan: breaking news. five more bombs found overnight, one going off by accident. investigators trying to track down suspects as new york and new jersey stay on high alert. >> the attacks drawing connections to boston. the similarities between the devices and the boston marathon bombings. >> kris: plus the patriots depleted roster takes another hit some who will step up after jimmy dw goes down in foxborough? ism all right. time the know and go. we have stories coming up. >> christa: starting off with a little weather. a tropical feel out there with the rain and the humanity, chris. >> chris: it is. we haven't had too many mornings like this in terms of downpours producing locally heavy rain. out through worcester county, flood advisory in place. close to the hopkinton area, up into bolton, look at some of these rain totals so far this morning from manchester, new hampshire, back through athol and orange. a good one to two inches of rain. in fact, boylston picking up three inches of rain so far this air mass in place. beginning to see that close to marlborough here. stretching right back through shrewsbury and over to the city of worcester. let up in downtown worcester as the moment here. the downpour just to the west of you. this extends down the 495 belt up into the merrimack valley, up to the sea chest of new hampshire, as well. the biggest issue, the water on the roadways. when you get these downpours coming on through and you get bigger puddles, perhaps some hydroplaningen keep that in mind. southwest of us, more bands of showers and storms trying form. i think this will work in across eastern mass. even though we haven't had a whole will the of rain in the boston metro area, southeastern mass so far this morning, some scattered showers and storms and locally heavy rain coming on in. you can pick up a quick one to two inches of rain in these narrow channels of heavy rain. we'll keep an eye out for that. other towns getting a half inch or less. not everyone is getting an inch plus. warm week, cooler by the weekend, drying out over the weekend, as well, guys. our commuters. here's kris anderson. >> kris: christa, good morning, everyone. we want to start with a train update. ad many rat dry on the orange line southbound because of a dibbled train. if you're riding the orange line, be aware of that. live look at the expressway, heading into boston, you see the slowdown, as you go to the maps, you see more red on the map, which is never a good sign. 30 minutes from the split all the way up to the tunnel. that extends down into 3, 24 and 95 connecting with 128. lots of red. there so just pack your patience. those wet a monday never makes things easy. the pike heading in. no problems on the pike itself, but right here you see it, 495 at the pike, the accident there is causing a back-up at 495678 closer in to the city, no big problems there. north of the city, a couple problems popping up here. an earlier accident on 495 southbound, the lowell connector causing some residual back-ups there. and then on route 1 in saugus, an accident southbound at the lynnfield tunnel. so be aware of that. lots of red popping up as we get closer to the 7:00 hour. minutes. 40 minutes 128 to the zakim. be patient out there as you head to work or school, wherever you're going this morning. back to you, guys. >> breaking news, a bag of bombs found in new jersey. [explosion] one of them detonated as the bomb squad robot worked to disarm it. the five explosive devices discovered at a train station in elizabeth, new jersey. >> christa: this comes on the heels of two other bombings, one in new jersey, one i the weekend. we have live team 7 coverage of these terror attacks. let's begin with dan hausle live in manhattan with overnight developments. dan? >> dan: big developments overnight. five people being questioned right now after they were picked up in a traffic stop about 8:45 last night near the verrazano bridge. the f.b.i. saying they're connected. the investigation of the bombings here. also more bombs, this time one going off in new jersey, about 25 minutes south of here, as an explosive discovery in new jersey. a backpack filled with bombs found at a transit station in elizabeth. [explosin] one of the devices exploding as a robot worked to neutralize the threat. authorities say two men found the backpack in a trash can near that train station and a pub. when they looked inside, they found wires and pipe bombs so they called police. >> if that pub was crowded and there was a lot of people there, it could have severely injured, maimed or killed many, many peop >> dan: the mayor says he doesn't foe if elizabeth was the target and that whoever put the bombs in the trash may have been just trying to get rid of it. >> the people doing this, they have no value on human life, and it's really difficult to understand their rationale. >> dan: the explosion prompted authorities to suspend amtrak service in elizabeth and parts of the northeast corridor. law enforcement officials are concerned that an active authorities stopped a vehicle of interest in saturday's new york blast just before 9:00 sunday night near the verrazano bridge. right now five people are being questioned by the f.b.i. and in manhattan, surveillance video shows this same man at two new york locations, one where a bomb went off and another where a suspicious device was found. 29 people were injured in the explosion in chelsea saturday night. a bomb set off by a flip phone. >> ran outside and saw glass, people screaming and chaos >> dan: authorities found another device that appeared to be a pressure cooker with wiring and a cell phone taped to the side. >> a bomb exploding in new york is obviously an act of terrorism, but it is noted to -- it's not linked to international terrorism. in other words, we find no isis connection, et cetera. >> dan: a few hours happening this week, the governor has brought in a thousand state trooper and national guardsmen to help show a preds accident at new york city transportation centers so people feel safe and they can see anything, they say something. live in new york city, dan hausle, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: and experts say the bombing in new york city over the weekend does have similarities to the attacks on the boston marathon. so for the latest on that, let's head to boston and 7's victoria warren. >> victoria: good morning, you can't help but think about what happened here at the finish line. now this morning experts from the boston marathon bombings are weighing in. what happened in new york over the weekend, there are some obvious similarities. an explosion and then a second device found made from wires and a pressure cooker. at the marathon in 2013, pressure cooker bombs killed three people and injured more than 200 people. those who led the boston investigation say new york city police have a monumental task the nature of how pressure cooker bombs explode. >> they'll be collecting every piece of evidence they can locate on the streets. we found it in boston on building tops, you know, on adjacent streetways. >> victoria: another similarity will be the importance of surveillance video. experts say it can take some time to go through all the video that is important. live this morning in boston, victoria warren, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: stay with 7news for continuing coverage of the bombing in new york city and other attacks both online and on air. >> christa: we're following breaking news out of randolph where the margaret l didn't van school will be closed after a pipe burst over the weekend. no word on whether any significant damage was done. but we this know that all other schools and towns will stay open and will open on time. breaking overnight, a man fighting for his life after being shot outside a nightclub the garage nightclub. police say someone shot the victim several times and then drove off. right now the victim is in critical condition. >> sarah: patriots nation wondering who will play quarterback on thursday night. it's a quick turn around for the team with jimmy garoppolo likely sidelined for at least a week with a sprained shoulder. 7's john cuoco live at gillette with more on this. john?
