on route 20 westbound in oxford, mass state police saying the westbound side of that road is closed right now, and one lane is open on the eastbound side. no word yet on what caused the crash. last possibility there was another accident in that very same spot, two people died, including a 9-month-old baby. police say a cement truck and a car crash head-on after the car crossed the center line and hit the truck due to the impact of that crash, the car was pushed into a third vehicle, three other people were taken to the hospital. also breaking news, a scare at southbridge middle and high school. police say it gets put on lock-down. police say that lock-down is over now and those students are in danger. no word yet on what happened. we will bring you any updates just as soon as we get them. >> well, following breaking news out of california. police on the scene of an active shooter at an apartment complex near the san diego airport. at this time flights are not being allowed to land at that airport. >> 7's adam williams is live in the newsroom with what we know. >> elizabeth, ryan, police say a man has been firing a gun sporadically inside this apartment complex, according to officials, the man shot at officers when they responded to a domestic violence call. those officers then returned fire, but weren't able to take the suspect into custody. so so far, there are no reports of injuries out there. federal officials say they're not letting any flights, though, land, as you said, at this time because the complex is right under the airport's approach path. they are allowing flights to take off from the airport. police are asking people in the area to stay inside and away from windows. so volatile situation. and following a developing story in central california, also, police shoot and kill a suspect this morning after he allegedly stabbed five people in the university of california mersa campus. two were flown to the hospital and three were treated right on campus. police are still investigating a motive for this attack. we'll be staying on top both of these stories and bring you the latest information right here as we get it. following a developing story out of illinois. authorities say a police appeared to be a homicide was actually a carefully staged suicide. back in september, lieutenant joe glenwitz's death set off a long manhunt but investigators say a review the incident show it was all a hoax, saying the officer was trying to cover up years of stealing money from a police department youth program. >> analysts determined the trail of equipment killings of pepper spray, a baton and his personal glasses was an attempt to mislead first responders and investigators to believe this was a homicide scene. >> the investigators say the officer stole thousands of dollars to use for personal expenses including travel and adult web sites. >> we are following more news here. a teen charged with killing his teacher inside danvers high school will stand trial. phillip chism appeared for a three weeks ago he was sent to a mental health evaluation. dan hausle is live with more on the judge's ruling. >> the trial was stopped in its tracks a couple of weeks ago. the defendant was there in court today, and we've learned the trial will go on as scheduled, but with some minor changes for the defendant's benefit. >> reporter: phillip chism walks into court to find he will stand trial for the murder of his high school teacher colleen witnessesser. the judge rejected the defense argument the 16-year-old is not mentally competent to stand trial. >> the court finds that mr. chism has showed the ability to consult with his attorney with a reasonable degree of rational understanding and rational understanding of the proceedings against him. >> reporter: jury selection had been stopped because the defense lawyer said chism was banging his head on the floor of his padded cell and sometimes spoke of hearing voices. chism's lawyers now asked to move his trial because the jury pool might be tainted by reports of those actions. >> these comments that are reported are gratuitous and inflammatory materials and increases the risk of prejudice of mr. chism. >> reporter: chism's lawyers also complain news coverage of the anniversary of ritzer's death worked against their client and the prosecution rejected that argument. >> the family has walked on eggshells to very carefully honor and celebrated their a daughter in a way that doesn't prejudice the jury. >> reporter: chism stared and listened, barely responding to his lawyers. the judge agreed to keep the court days short because it's hard to keep chism competent for much longer than a couple of hours. >> the trial was hoped to wrap up by thanksgiving but now may extend beyond christmas. live in salem, dan hausle, 7news. breaking news from boston's south end. boston police confirm two elderly women were hit by a car this afternoon. it all happened on tremont street at westbrook line. the injuries are said to be serious and possibly life-threatening. we do have a crew on scene. we will update you just as soon as we learn more. >> reporter: a new mother and her baby are recovering today after a crash that forced them into the emergency delivery there. brittany bedoin was rushed to the hospital where doctors successfully delivered her baby boy via c-section. she and her husband say they were caught between two cars that had been racing when the car flipped over. brittany was trapped inside while her husband was thrown out of the car. the baby's grandfather says after seeing his video, having his daughter, son-in-law and new grandson alife is a wonderful gift. >> that's wild. it's unbelievable. it's surreal. we're just thanking the stars that all three survived. >> and this afternoon mom, dad and baby are doing just fine. all right, 7news turning to the weather. we're getting a splash of summer this week as we kick off the first week of november. today, and it looks like this nice weather is here to stay. chief meteorologist pete bouchard is here with the forecast and maybe a little cool they are weekend but it will warm up again, right. >> it is. we'll be record-setting by friday, ryan. we'll really see the temperatures take off. a little cooler than yesterday coming down into the 70s. a little closer to reality along the coastline. low 60s. but elsewhere close to 70 degrees. right now around 60, but we're in the 50s. this is a typical kind of ought m day that you might see in september with the sea breezele constituting us back into the mid-50s, look the coastline. still 60 degrees in plymouth and marshfield, though. clouds offshore, i don't think there will be a big cloud issue tonight. but tomorrow some of these clouds will the store to sneak up on us and move overhead, so we'll congest the sky a little bit in the afternoon. there might even be a sprinkle too as we get a warm front to cross here, and on friday it's take-off time as we get into the real heat, near record warmth, the number to beat in boston is 73 degrees. i think we'll be better than that. colder weekend forecast. we're going to bring it back into the low 50s. it'll be a big drop between friday and the weekend. we'll take a look at that, see if any storms are brewing, stay with us. >> also on 7, mbta making a big announcement today on the commuter rail's plans to respond to storms this winter. this after massive issues on happy lines last winter. today officials outlining their plan to keep things reasoning. 7's byron barnett reports from announcement. >> reporter: when storms hit it winter, the t says this new piece of heavy equipment will be the star of the show. it's the max kershaw snow fighter, equipped with a wider plow and a snow thrower attached to 3 snow and ice from the commuter rail and subway tracks. >> the typical plow on a locomotive is a little wider than the locomotive itself. this device could probably clear a spot 20 feet wide. >> reporter: commuters were traumatized last winter by explailt canceled trains due to t officials say they're buying $83.7 million worth of new snow fighting equipment, repairs and improvements including 10 snow fighters, six speed-wing front end loaders and several small tractors. >> we're preparing for winter just like last year and preparing to run through the whole winter. >> reporter: and the t says they'll tackle lack of information when things go wrong. >> we'll have more people pushing out the alerts. last year we had more people doing dispatch than people putting out the alerts and they got way behind. >> reporter: another problem last winter, transportation workers not showing up for work during storms. t officials say they'll be working with managers and unions to address that, as well. >> and we're going methods where we will be much better on the overstate to make sure that people who are supposed to be at work are there. >> and will all these new improvements lead to higher fares? t officials say that's something that will be addressed during the annual budget review, and they say it's something that's always on the table. in cambridge, i'm byron barnett, 7news. now to the race for the white house. republicans in new hampshire today filing for the state primary but not the only one campaigning hard in the granite state. nbc has the very latest. >> reporter: ben carson on the rise in today's quinnipiac poll done since the last debate he's at 23%, in a virt actual tie with donald trump who was ahead by 8 points in that poll a month ago and carson is raising more dollars than other candidates. sunday. >> i don't feel i have to make a lot of changes because i'm not a politician. politicians are always putting their finger saying now what do i have to do where all i have to is tell the truth. >> reporter: many fans christian conservatives like carson. >> for a lot of these evangelicals, the donald trump bra vault oh doesn't work for them but the kind of humility of ben carson does work for them. >> reporter: donald did file at the new hampshire primary. >> i don't debate well, but you should vote for me. >> he doesn't have a chance of bringing back a single job. >> reporter: it upset kentucky last night, g.o.p. wins in mississippi and virginia. despite the party on capitol hill end for the presidency, bad news for hillary clinton, and if the election were held today, she'd be tied with ben carson, according to the nbc news wall street journal poll. but the election is actually one year and four days away. and what a difference a whole year can make. at this point in the 2008 race, rudy giuliani was the republican frontrunner, and the frontrunner on the democratic side was hillary clinton with a 22 point i'm steve handlesman, nbc news, washington. there are some new faces on boston city council after yesterday's election. two newcomers beat out a pair of boston's longest serving incumbents, andrea joy campbell and charles yancey and a high school teacher defeated steven murphy. today mayor wall, congratulated the winners and spoke how a shake-up will affect the city government. >> we look forward a good new relationship. i think it's important to have a balance in the city and the city council and obviously work closely together. we don't agree on every wish but we're not supposed. we're supposed to work together on behalf the taxpayers of boston. >> reporter: most of the incumbents did keep their seats yesterday. five of the 9 district counselors ran unopposed? a. what would you pay for a parking spot on beacon hill? we'll show you the spot going for more than a half a million dollars. then at 4:30, what leader at one mosque in >> so funny how that works, too. technically it's open but nobody's moving anywhere. 55 degrees in boston. duty reading about 45, an east wind at 11 miles per hour. that breeze is nice. it's gentle, it's cooling us off, that's for sure. and the warmth will continue here for the foreseeable future, near record on friday. and it's vulnerable too. the record high that's surrounded on neither day, either side mid and upper 70s. it's right for the picking. colder weekend forecast, although, it doesn't seem it will go right into the cold right away on saturday. may linger in the 60s. 55 in boston, sitting right now in plymouth. 50s out through cape cod and the islands right now. we'll settle back tonight that the 40s and low 50s in boston. we're clear for now, but as we move into tomorrow, there will be some clouds that pop up. initially it starts bright but then in the afternoon i think the clouds will really get ahold of the sky. what's happening is we're bringing in a more humid air mass so that in itself in november in new england is kind of an oddity. what happens is low cloudiness may form tomorrow and then we stick with that. but before we get into some clouds and with it a little sunshine and a mild start to the morning, we'll jump right back into the 70s. we'll see it in salisbury, middleton, waltham to framingham, hope dale at 71 degrees. if i were to just come out the blue and start with this forecast like maybe in any other given november, you wouldn't believe me at that. but the fact that we've been in this mild pattern just justifies these temperatures, and the fact that we're gonna go for records on friday, you're probably already making plans to be outside. 70 in duxbury tomorrow and wellesey at 72... by the time we get into friday, as far as shower activity will be very, very slight. there might be a couple of sprinkles that pop up tomorrow night and again on a friday nate with the front that passes. 73 in boston on friday. not bad. 69 in worcester. i may up these just a little bit. so where's the cold, up near the north pole, not to be coming down into the lower 48. we're going to trend milder here over the next 7 to 10 days, at least through mid-november. we may have some cool-downs but i still think overall it will be read as above normal. clear start. partly sunny, late sprinkles are possible and that 7 on 7 forecast with the sprinkles and the forecast and the cooler weekend. it's saturday now instead of being in the mid-50s still around 60 because you start at 54 in the morning. i'll see you at 4:30. >> here's a check of the roads. zakim bridge right here northbound and southbound. northbound traffic leaving the camera dealing with delays here up into the medford area and southbound it bogs down getting into the o'neill tunnel. up to the left-hand side of the roadway, up and down ramps towards the circle delaying with a delay there as well. masspike has a left lane breakdown. westbound bogging down getting by and eastbound slowing down and taking a look as you try to schwas by that area. as you get by the somerville section route 93 and they're moving along pretty well into the city. i'm jeff stapleton, 7news. we're continuing to keep an eye on the breaking news from boston. sky 7 hd live over the scene right now where boston police are still confirming to us that two elderly women were hit by a car this afternoon. it happened on tremont street in westbrook line. serious and possibly life-threatening. you can see officers still on scene right now. the area is closed down. we do have a crew there and will update you just as soon as we learn more. next on 7news, a sticky situation. a popular tourist situation getting a bath after being deemed one of the germiest sites. and a child is recovering after she was attacked by a pitbull in a fall river apartment. and a woman's body found burned near train tracks, coming up at 5:00. plus, a staged scene and dramatic information from the case of an illinois police officer whose death triggered a massive manhunt earlier this
