with the murder of two police officers. two iowa police officers shot and killed while sitting in their patrol cars overnight around des moines. blocks away from each other. police are calling these attacks ambushes. and they say 46-year-old scott michael greene is responsible. >> it doesn't look like there was any interaction between these officers. and whoever the... they sat in their cars. that's the best we got we can explain the scene right now. both of them were in their cars. >> reporter: police discovered the first officer in irvindale, iowa just after 1:00 this morning. when someone reported shots being fired. they found the second officer 20 minutes later. about two miles away in des moines. also seated in his vehicle. before the manhunt was over, greene was caught. des moines police had warned the public not to approach him. saying he was armed and dangerous. >> there is clearly danger if you are a police officer. these guys were gunned down there is definitely some danger out there. there is somebody out there shooting police officers. >> nancy: the officers' names have not been released, nor a motive. nbc reporting greene is being taken back to des moines for questioning. officers say their investigation continues. nancy chen, 7 news. >> sarah: we have new details in a home invasion in sterling. we are hearing the 911 call from a 70-year-old woman tied up and robbed in her own home. police searching for suspects. today they are saying may have been more than three people involved in the robbery. jennifer eagan live in sterling with more. >> reporter: sar remarks police say they are following up on leads. they haven't made any arrest, though. they haven't questioned anyone. detectives have been going over that woman's cadillac. it is here at the police station. it was stolen and then ditched by the suspects. moments after the suspects left the woman's home, she called 911. >> my house has been robbed... caller had just freed her hands from duct tape. three men had broken into her home in sterling, bound her hands and feet with tape, stolen $1,000 and her car. >> they left. they have to be in sterling. in my 2004... they are probably heading for the expressway. i don't know. they haven't been gone long. >> reporter: police say the suspects stole the woman's cadillac. police found it yesterday afternoon sterling. today detectives returned to the area looking for clues. >> we are asking if anyone who saw this vehicle parked there or another vehicle pick anybody up or anybody walking in the area to contact us. >> reporter: you can see the tire marks in the dirt here. police say they haven't been able to find any footprints, though. worth noting where the car was left is only about a mile from 190. the highway in this area. >> we believe there was a second vehicle involved. >> reporter: sterling's police chief says the three men wore masks and gloves. >> she did not recognize any of the individuals. they all spoke english. she didn't recognize the voices. >> reporter: right now police are following up on several leads. looking into the possibility that more people could have been involved. >> we are assuming that it was planned. we don't know if the... if they are familiar with the house or the individuals. we are still in the early stages of the investigation. talking to that woman again. the victim and her husband, too. he was not at home at the time of the robbery. we are live from sterling, jennifer eagan, 7 news. >> christa: opening statements in the trial of gary lee sampson. the sentence was thrown out in 2011 because of juror misconduct. let's head out live outside federal court in boston. statements just wrapped up. prosecutors painted a grim description of the crimes, painting gary lee sampson as a cold-blooded killer. the defense is saying that is man that tried to confess to his crimes and that he has a history of mental illness. jurors heard opening statements today. prosecutors talked about the lives of the three men sampson pled guilty of murdering. 19-year-old jonathan rizzo, 69-year-old phillip mccloskey and 58-year-old robert whitney of new hampshire do good deeds, they are particularly vulnerable. those are his victims. lawyers for sampson argue he suffered from a traumatic brain injury that happened at the age of four years old. and that in the days leading up to the crimes, sampson was in a state of high emotional distress. his lawyers said, "the tool, his brain, has been broken for a very long time." lawyers for sampson then say that he confessed to the crimes and wanted to be caught. 911 call for the jury where he told the dispatcher, "i'm just scared. i tried to turn myself in last week. i'm scared. i'm sick and tired of what i have been doing. i'll give you any information you want. i'll confess to everything i have done." and some of sampson's victims' families are in the courtroom again, reliving this trial for another time. jurors, again, just finished listening to opening statements. they will begin hearing from witnesses momentarily. live in boston, nicole oliverio, 7 news. >> sarah: a man trapped in his car after a serious crash on i in randolph. the car flipped over and landed on top of the guardrail this morning. police say good samaritans stopped and tried to pull the driver out but were unsuccessful. rescue crews arrived and worked for over an hour to free the man. he was transported to an area hospital and is now recovering. sky 7 hd over the scene after a train goes off the tracks, derailing in westford. you can see, it is still there right now. the cars carrying hazardous material: although officials say none of it has spilled. victoria warren has more. report@freight train jumping the tracks in what exactly caused this derailment. there is going to be quite a bit of work done to fix these tracks. the good news, it is only freight trains that go through here. no commuter trains are affected. dead at the scene and her father was taken to the hospital. police are investigating a deadly accident at a workplace in rockland. officers say a man from wareham died aftergetting trapped between the bumper of a track or the-trailer and a loading dock. the 37-year-old man worked at a highway safety system. police say the driver of the track or the-trailer has not been charged. of the department of health and human services in boston. police say about a hundred protesters blocked the entrance to this building, advocating for disability rights. one person was arrested in that demonstration as well. we also have new details on a wreck in the back bay. involving fast boston fire engine. boston police have now cited the driver of an s.u.v. for failing to stop for an emergency vehicle. after that vehicle was hit by the fire truck on monday. investigators say the driver blocked the fire truck at an intersection. t the s.u.v. and crashed into several parked cars. one civilian and four black hoodie with a switch out in his hands, looks at me, he report tt robbers then made him move and lay on an aisle in the store. one made an ominous warning. >> he told me he would gut me if i looked up. report t crooks took $500 in cash and cigarettes. then ran out the door. >> they weren't wearing a halloween mask. it wasn't like a halloween costume. the fact that he had the switch out right away, there is no way it could have been a joke. >> it is a halloween he never wants to repeat and thinking, there is no need to die here tonight. f i just wanted to go home and see my girlfriend. that is all i wanted. >> sarah: a driver involved in a deadly crash in salem, new hampshire is now facing charges. the accident happened on route 111 yesterday. a 69-year-old woman was killed when police say a car turning on to the road clipped her car sending it into oncopping traffic. police say say 45-year-old drugs in his car at the time of the crash. he has been charged with dwi and drug possession. >> reporter: more news today. it's been a couple of days since a deadly pipeline explosion in alabama tempt fects are still being felt across the south. some areas experiencing a gasoline shortage and price increa we are learning more about the gas company's safety records. >> what i felt... i felt bad. i still feel bad. >> reporter: emotions running high for colonial pipeline leaders on tuesday after one person was killed in an explosion on monday. >> this is something that that is not a routine thing for us. it is not that it happens all the time kind of thing. it is a tragic accident. >> reporter: colonial has had had 178 spills that released 193,000 gallons of hazardous liquid. in 2003, the eopa fined colonial $34 million for gross negligence after it spilled almost a million gallons of diesel fuel in south carolina. one firefighter saw monday's explosion up close. >> the pipeline, the product was shooting out. flames going 300 feet in the air. >> one of the first on the scene, he says the fire was compared to the hour-long search to find victims. >> we had contractors coming out. they were just hurt and telling us, you know, there is eight, nine people still out there. four or five people. you know, it was hectic. >> reporter: exec taifts company say their goal is to restart the line as early as this week. >> christa: right now, police are searching for a group of shooters after several people were shot at a park in memphis. investigators say that six night. one of them opened fire. a 16-year-old girl was killed. four others were injured. three of those victims are in critical condition. and police in wisconsin are still searching for suspects after a saudi arabian student at the university of wisconsin was attacked. and killed. investigators say that someone beat the 24-year-old early sunday. right now, officers have found no evidence to suggest the victim was specifically targeted based on his ethnicity. >>ar are before a tugboat helped to pull her out. she was treated for hypothermia. she is recovering and is expected to face criminal charges for running from police. >> sarah: a thief caught stealing a necklace from a consignment shop in new mexico. police didn't have to look hard to find matthew crowder. he left his business card behind. he posted about the stolen necklace on facebook. looking "i don't remember." he's going like "i don't remember!? >> sarah: welcome back. it's wednesday. about to go downhill. meaning it gets easier from here. danielle, this weather could not be nicer. >> danielle: i know. temperatures in the 60's. so it is one of those days where it feels as nice as it looks outside. it's been really chilly. nice and sunny. so today, it is also nice and pleasant out there. those winds out of the west at eight miles per hour. right now, bedford sitting at 62 degrees. boston at 63. mid-6's down along the cape. a lot of these temperatures about ten degrees above where enjoy these temperatures. as far as november rainfall, we haven't seen any this month. the month just started yesterday. on average, we pick up about four inches of rain for the month. as as snow, we do pick up an inch on average. a mix of clouds and sun this afternoon. as we head into tro a chance to see some showers. tomorrow morning, heading into lunchtime, a lot of the chance for that showers... those showers will be north of the pike. and into southern new hampshire. as we head into the evening and the later afternoon hours, that is when it looks like those showers will become more widespread. so tomorrow is the scattered shower day. have the umbrella handy. we are not looking like we are will see any torrential rain. it does look like a rainy day. overnight, then the front moves offshore. we clear things out then. those winds will gust out of the northwest around 25 miles per hour. so when we are all said and done, it does look like rain totals should stay under half an inch. as i mentioned, not a ton of rain. we will take what we can get. as we head into friday, into the weekend, things are drying out. for today, a pleasant day. temperatures getting close to 70 degrees. overnight tonight, clouds increase. and temperatures are mild as well. upper 4's into the low 50's. tomorrow is kind of an interesting day. now, southern new hampshire, up across northern massachusetts, temperatures will be a bit cooler. low 50's. down along the cape, temperatures in the mid to upper 6's. a big spread for tomorrow. something to keep in mind. heading into friday, it is windy. and we are dropping the temperatures down to the upper 40's. and low 50's. saturday and sunday, look sunny. temperatures in upper 40's and low 50's, too. we are back to mid-50's by monday. election day on tuesday, 60's. >> christa: okay. can you believe?
