officers swarmed in with k-9 units. police were focusing their scare area. the good news is he is arrested now and in custody. here this noontime. a suspect is dead following a police-involved shooting that happened up in lynn. and this happened on western avenue. let's go to jennifer eagan. jen? >> reporter: hours later, and you can still see police are here on scene. they have been combing the whole neighborhood. around the corner. neighbors tell us they heard 7 or 8 shots and that a woman with her baby in her arms had to duck behind a car to avoid getting hit. police in lynn ending up in a confrontation with a suspect. >> i think cops said put the gun down. put the gun down. >> reporter: then neighbors heard several shots. >> it sounded like firecrackers. then it went pop, pop. report tt man died of his injuries. no officer was hurt. sources tell 7 news it began here. at a home along bay view avenue before 9:00 this morning. the suspect took off, making it a couple of blocks down the street. one neighbor says a woman and her baby were caught on the street as shots were fired. >> she got a baby in her arm. and the police come in and ask her if she is okay. if the baby is so day. she says she is okay. >> reporter: among the evidence, a gun and several shell casings. people who live here unnerved by the whole scene. >> i wish it wasn't near my house, you know? i have a three-year-old son. you know, in this neighborhood. will make a move to somewhere else. like. the suspect dialed of his injuries. this hour. the district attorney's office is investigating. we are live in lynn, 7 news. >> christa: two people killed in a house fire in groton. >> reporter: well, christa, we did speak with the state fire marshal's office. and they say because the flames got so ahead of firefighters when they arrived, they are having a difficult time finding the point of origin which is leading to them not being able to know exactly what caused this deadly fire just yet. a home in groton gutted by a vicious fire that killed two people. firefighters spent hours with the... at the deadly scene. a neighbor called 911. but firefighters didn't initially know there were people inside. >> not upon official arrival. i became apparent fairly quickly that there were people unaccounted for. >> reporter: the flames were too much for druce handle to try to save anyone. the couple identified as a husband and wife by a family friend were found on the first floor. >> due to the amount of fire and then also the advanced stages of fire, the building was compromised on arrival. we weren't able to send attempt. >> reporter: family members showed up to the home to find almost every possession burned and the structure reduced to studs. they tried to save whatever was left of loved ones who couldn't make it out. and even though right now, there is no cause of this fire, the fire department is saying that they do not believe that it appears suspicious. that is the latest live in groton, nicole oliverio, 7 news. >> sarah: also on 7: the zika boston. a boston man contracted the virus after he visited an area the world health organization is also sounding the alarm on zika, saying the virus is spreading too quickly. mosquitoes carry and spread the virus which is linked to birth defects. federal officials have posted zika travel notices in countries in central and south america and in the caribbean. turning now to your forecast. we could see some flakes and rain today. but we will be on the mild by next week. thank goodness. let's send it over to bri eggers with more. >> bri: yes. you can see we are kind of in this dry air wing. playing squeeze play. between two systems today. one still bringing lingering nantucket. then another trying to push in some snow showers from the west. and we are even seeing some of those light snow showers, even some flurries in nashua, new hampshire, fitchburg. even into worcester. that dry air in place east of that chewing away at some of those flakes. nevertheless, as we head through the afternoon, that moisture tries to push its way in. and we could see some wet snowflakes as we head through the next five to six hours. current temperatures, though, as you can see, very close to 40 degrees. where we have seen the sunshine breaking out, temperatures warming into the mid-40's across the south coast. if we do see those flakes, maybe they make for a coating to an inch on the grassy surfaces. but it won't stick around for very long. especially on the paved surfaces with those temperatures on the mild side. mostly cloudy through the day rain and snow showers through the evening hours. 38-45 for our highs. and how about this weekend? it just keeps getting milder and milder. and by the time we are into next week, the groundhog may very well see his shadow. sunshine, temperatures in the 50's. more on that to come in a few minutes. >> christa: the race for the white house: he certainly isn't high is away from the spotlight. does he ever really? republican front-runner donald trump boldly ditching the republican debate last night, and he held his own rally. today just days before the iowa primary, the caucus, he is rallying again. this time up in new hampshire. let's go to 7's steve cooper. steve? >> reporter: well, christa, donald trump didn't get a lot of sleep last night. in fact, jetting halfway across the country in the middle of the night to return here to new hampshire. but he says he didn't want to disappoint his supporters in the granite state. supporters, by the way, who were out first thing this morning. they lined up early in nashua. check out the presidential front-runner donald trump who opted out of the debate in iowa last night. hosting his own event to raise money for veterans. >> it is not dodging a debate. he has made himself available more hours to more press than any other candidate. all the candidates combined. >> reporter: and the donald unplugged for nearly an hour today. shoring up his support from new hampshire voters who were headed to the polls in less than two weeks here. >> when somebody doesn't treat tough. you have to be strong. you have to be... you can't let them push you around. >> reporter: as for the debate last night in iowa, minus trump, his absence was noted. >> i'm a maniac. and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat, and ugly. and ben, you are a terrible surgeon. (laughter) now that we have gotten the donald trump portion out of the way... >> reporter: trump with a commanding lead was happy to take a swipe at cruz. >> he got beaten up pretty badly last night. probably they are not going up. i was told ours went up. isn't that something? >> reporter: undecided voters were sitting in the back. 36 we are here to be entertained. and then when i comes election day, maybe he is the guy that we would vote for. >> reporter: talk about dropping. in donald trump made a quick visit here to new hampshire. he is in and out already. already headed back to iowa. he will spend the weekend campaigning ahead of the caucuses there next week. but he will be returning here to new hampshire after that to continue to sway those undecided voters, he says. live in nashua this afternoon, steve cooper, 7 news. >> reporter: all right. a reminder, dan hausle will be live in iowa through the caucuses. look for his live reports right here on 7 news. >> sarah: new details following the standoff in oregon. f.b.i. released video of the shooting that resulted in the death of a protester. footage shows how police set up a barricade blocking a car. 55-year-old lavoy finicum. he got out of the car and started running. officers say he then reached for a gun. that is when police shot and killed him. the f.b.i. says one more person has left the refuge. but four people still remain in the standoff. agents say they want to the remaining protesters to leave the area peacefully. >> christa: new at noon, the family of the marine killed in hawaii is thanking the kplunt community for their support. christopher orlando and 11 other marines are presumed dead. midair in hawaii. no survivors were found. orlando was 23 years old. his family arrived in massachusetts. and they were given a police escort to hingham. people in town lined the streets. and waved flags to show support for the family. today they issued a letter saying in part "we were deeply moved by the tremendous show of support upon our return to massachusetts. the people of all ages who lined the streets, holding christopher and us will be etched in our minds forever." "richard and linda orlando." >> sarah: we will update on the breaking news now. jonathan hall live in somerville with more on the arrest of the escaped jon? >> reporter: yeah. the teenager was arrested in noon. apparently, he was still in handcuffs. somehow got himself out of the city of somerville. the feds have rounded up about 56 suspects in a series. >> raids in different towns overnight. they were charged as gang members. they were charged with drug trafficking. and also with having illegal weapons. an 18-year-old somerville man escaped federal custody early this morning right near somerville p.d. gabriel perez, 5'8", 150 pounds, was handcuffed when he took off from officers from the department of homeland security. he was being transported to 7 news on the scene as f.b.i. agents, homeland security police, local officers, and sheriff's deputies searched lyndon street behind somerville p.d. and this is where the somerville teenager was last seen running off. now, the police chief spoke to us a short time ago. he says perez got himself a ride and left. >> we believe he was driven to that location by a friend. >> reporter: so he had an accomplice waiting for him? >> he went to a known place that he used to work at. in somerville. through intelligence and through the close relationship detectives have with the public, we identified who drove him over to everett. we believe at this time, the >> reporter: so the chief says perez was arrested in the broadway corridor of everett custody. he should be back in court a bit later today. jonathan hall, 7 news. >> christa: coming up, three inmates wanted for murder on the run in california. and now a new twist in the tale. we will tell you what this woman has to do with it. a methuen student making a name for herself in the classroom. she is class president. she is getting a jump-start on her medical career. bri some of us could see some snowflakes today. we are looking at 50-degree temperatures next week. >> sarah: t light & fit, 15 delicious flavors, try to beat that! winter is hard on your nose. from first sniffles to endless runny noses. puffs plus lotion is soft. they help soothe irritation by locking in moisture better so you can face winter happily. a nose in need deserves puffs indeed. and try puffs softpack today. chalkboard. but listen to this: (family talking) that's a different kind of sound. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop. it's always worth remembering... that icing the cinnamon rolls is a privilege not a right. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop. bri watching for some snow showers as we make our way into the afternoon. this morning, it was some rain showers. we are sort of squeezed in between two systems here. you can see the dry air throughout the eastern half of the state. boston included. even seeing some breaks of sunshine. and those temperatures were massachusetts. now, here is some light snow flurry activity. nashua, through fitchburg. down through worcester. but this really just isn't much to even look at. or talk about. there is the possibility, though, that as these snow the west, northwest, they could drop a quick coating to possibly an inch. but i think that's most likely patio furniture. >> you still have it out. look at where these temperatures are. 39 for boston. 38 in bedford. 36 in worcester. >> we see that snow, start to want to pile up on the paved surface, it will quickly disappear. i'm really not looking for any accumulating snow. just the possibility of a passing shower. wet snowflakes. as we head into the afternoon. working through the timeline. you can see them popping up. then going away. and then as they make their way out on to the cape and the islands, turning to more of some rain showers. again, those temperatures are quite mild. in the 40's. afternoon. we keep the clouds around with us today, though. 38-45. that is still above average for this time of year. as we head into font, possibly an early flurry. then we see clearing overnight tonight. 25-32 for those lows. with the clouds sticking around. it also gets a bit breezy this evening. and for more on that, danielle? >> danielle: thanks, bri. we are not talking about a wind advisory or super gusty winds. those winds pick up a little bit as we head into dinnertime and the evening commute. and into the overnight hours. hour. these are gusted. sustained winds won't be this by tomorrow morning, though, the good news. they are really quieting down. if you are going on a run tomorrow morning, you plan to take a dog for a walk, you won't have to worry about the wind. doing some skiing, heading up north, more sunshine. temperatures into the 40's on sunday. to warm things up. much of the nation is quiet today. we do have some more storms up in the pacific northwest. and this is largely thanks to and speaking of el nino, we are wrapping up january with about ten inches of snow. just under ten inches. .5 this month. very similar to our el nino year in '97 and '98 when we got ten inches of snow. look at the seasonal totals. something to point out. i don't think we have significant snowfall in the upcoming forecast. bri, back to you. >> bri: absolutely, danielle. anything could happen in new england. april fool's day, we remember. that right? cooler temperatures for us: that's been with us this week. as we get into the beginning of next week and this really starts on sunday, getting a boost with mild air coming in from the southwest. and it doesn't stop there. we are into the mid to upper 50's as we near the middle of next week. so as i said before, the groundhog, he may see his shadow. which means six more weeks of winter. i do believe that that cold not off and it looks like it will settle back in for the rest of february, so enjoy those 50-degree temperatures week. >> sarah: all right. thank you. casey affleck premiering a made in massachusetts movie. the finest hours. >> christa: it opens up in theaters today. hollywood hit the hub for a special screening of it last night. affleck, you may know, grew up in cambridge. he joined pine on the red carpet at amc boston common. the movie is based on dramatic real-life events. a coast guard rescue off the cape in 1952. >> you do it in the place where it actually happened. the finning in quincy, massachusetts especially. >> two shots of cape cod in 1952. and it looks... i grew up on the cape. every summer we would go out there. and seeing the cape transformed back in time, it was really... it really touched me. it was beautiful. >> christa: affleck says the shots made him happier than any movie he has ever been in. >> sarah: still ahead on 7 news, two sink holes opening up right across the street from each other. where the divide happened. fast man on the run leading cops on a wild chase into a cracker barrel restaurant of >> christa: a cracker barrel crackdown out in albuquerque, new mexico. a guy is chased into a restaurant after he flipped his truck. him. making an arrest. police say he was wanted for several crimes. in the past month. and the a thief thwarted by a bank manager in north carolina. police say a man wearing a mask approached the back door of the bank shortly after it well, the manager saw the person coming. and he just simply held the officers say the suspect had a gun and used it to hit the door and eventually ran away. >> sarah: superman saving the day after he rescued a woman being robbed at an a.t.m. in england. antonio cortez was wearing a superman costume as part of a fund-raising effort. but he sprang into action wednesday when he heard screams and saw man trying to mug a woman on the street. he says he chased the attacker and wrestled him to the ground until police arrived. >> she looked like she had been roughed up a little bit. i looked at the man. he was just over there by the shops. and everybody was pointing, saying it was him, it was him. >> sarah: authorities arrested a 54-year-old man in connection with the incident. thanks to superman. that woman is doing okay. >> christa: coming up on 7: a student determined to make a difference helping out in hospitals and she has her eye on the future. and she is this week's class act. >> sarah: then at 12:30: 7 marathons in 7 days across 7 continents. a massachusetts woman looking >> sarah: students often struggle to figure out exactly what they want to do with the rest of their lives. >> christa: not this youngst lady. she is helping a lot of other people. she is this week's class act. >> it was off to greater . >> hi. how you guys doing? >> reporter: this teenager was arrested in everett about 11:30 this morning. maybe $11:45. he took off from a neighborhood which is right behind the somerville police station here. now, the u.s. attorney's office had announced 56 arrests in overnight raids. including this one. drug dealers and those who have illegal weapons. an 18-year-old somerville man escaped custody early this morning near the police station. he was in federal custody at the time. his name, gabriel perez. he was handcuffed when he took off from officers from the department of homeland officers were trying to transfer him to a sheriff's department van for transportation to court. he was wearing a fake f.b.i. t-shirt which said "female body inspector." 7 news on the scene, police, local officer, homeland they searched lyndon street behind the somerville police station. this is where the somerville team was last seen running off. and there was a day care center on this street which was warned to keep everybody inside. the police chief says perez got in a car with a friend and left for everett. that is where he was found. the mayor says the city warned residents to stay inside. >> this is about keeping everyone safe. we had a known criminal gang member in our community suspected of criminal activity. as part of our larger we are grateful he has been removed. >> reporter: now the police with developing the intelligence which led them to understand he had left somerville and headed off to everett. now perez back in custody and should possibly be in court later today. jonathan hall, 7 news. afternoon. a suspect is dead following a police-involved shooting in lynn. this all happened on western jennifer eagan has the latest. >> reporter: police in lynn ending up in a confrontation with a suspect. >> i thisty cops said "put the gun down." >> reporter: then neighbors heard several shots. >> it sounded like firecrackers. it went pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: the man dialed of his injuries. no officers were hurt. sources tell 7 news it began here. police were serving a warrant at a home along bay view avenue this morning. the suspect took off. making it a couple of blocks down the street. one neighbor says a woman and her baby were caught on the street as shots were fired. >> the police were asking if she was okay. >> i wish it wasn't near my house, you know? >> bri: well, that will have to wait until the end of february. we kick off february with some mild temperatures. it almost seems strange that we are tracking snow showers today. you know what they say. you don't like the weather, here we go with the snow showers starring to work through northern worcester county. we have some sunshine down in southeastern massachusetts. that is where those temperatures have been able to get a boost. at this point, we are sort of sandwiched between these two systems. the first that brought rain showers this morning to cape cod and nantucket. sliding farther off to the east. and this one to our northwest. trying to push in those snow showers into this afternoon. so while we might see some wet snowflakes and flurries flying around out there, i don't think we are going to see much in the way of accumulation, any of it sticking around. maybe some grassy surfaces. look at where the temperatures are. near 40 in boston. if you want the warm-up, wait until sunday. that is when it kicks. in then it is into the 50's next week. the extended forecast still to come. >> sarah: new revelations about a california jail-break. a teacher at the jail might have helped inmates escape. the sheriff says the employee had a relationship with one of the men and helped him break out. steel, snaked along plumbing tunnels and then rappelled off this roof using bed sheets as a rope. a jail-break right out of hollywood and now this twist. >> there has been an arrest. it is believed she provided critical planning tools that aided in their preparation for the escape. report tt sheriff's department says the jail english teacher had a relationship with one inmate, providing him with google maps that may have shown the roof before the escape. investigators say she denied giving them power tools. the case, a striking similarity to upstate new . >> i did wrong. i deserve to be punished. >> reporter: prison employee joyce mitchell admitted to having a friendship with two murderers before helping them bust out of prison. of relationship that developed. how far it went and whether it was physical or not, we are still trying to confirm. the sheriff, investigators believe two inmates may be living in a van together. >> we don't think they are outside of the tri-county area. >> reporter: with ten now arrested, including gang members three miles from the orange county jail, investigators are one step closer to arresting the three inmates. men wanted for murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and torture. they pulled off a jail few could have imagined. the f.b.i. is offering a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of these escaped inmates. >> christa: across the country: the infamous affluenza teen is set to face a judge here in the u.s. today. ethan couch and his mother were arrested last month in mexico. after he allegedly violated his probation. his case drew outrage. the defense said he was too privileged to really know right from wrong when he driving crash. two huge sink holes opening up in oregon. they are not too far apart either. they have actually been right across the street from each other. look at. that one of the sink holes took out some of the lanes of a highway. both sink holes opened up within a short period of time, too. a metal object washing up on the eastern coast of malaysia. prompting speculation that it could be debris from the missing malaysian airlines flight mh-370. the object is six and a half feet long and it was spotted floating in the water offer the malaysian coastline wednesday. flight mh-370 disappeared with 239 people onboard back in march of 2014. >> sarah: still ahead, a daring massachusetts runner in australia today. she is racing in 7 continents, all in 7 days. >> bri: an amazing story. if you are doing some training, need to get out for a run, car repairs, home improvements, a family trip ...it's not easy to afford them. what did marco rubio do? he put $22,000 in personal expenses on a republican party credit card. rubio's bad judgment caused a scandal and for five years rubio refused to release the credit card records. marco rubio: skipping major votes... all over the place on immigration... bad judgment. r he's just not ready to be president. >> sarah: welcome back. the massachusetts woman who set out to run 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days will run her last race today. actually, we are just hearing that she just ran it. she finished. and she won. becca pizzi will be in sydney, australia today. she is, rather. she started the challenge in antarctica last week. belmont. get. this she has won every single race that she has been in. all 7 of them. so now it's official. she is the first american woman to complete this challenge. so i mean, this is amazing. >> christa: 7, 7, 7. we feel inspired. bri, we feel a little inadequate as well. >> bri: oh, my gosh. the travel alone would wear me out. isn't that the truth? not just the running. getting from continent to continent. amazing feat there. 39 in boston. a little breeze out there. that has helped to scour out the fog we had earlier this morning. hey, the mild temperatures may be helping to boost the mood a little bit. how about this? an increase in daylight hours. the sun setting just before the 5:00 hour tonight. have you been noticing that? we make our way through february. things looking better. just before 7:00 p.m. for the first day of spring. which isn't too far away. next week, a preview of it with our temperatures into the 50's. i mentioned the light breeze really light winds all around. sustained winds anywhere between 5-10 miles per hour. again that, helps to kind of mix that fog out that we had earlier. we still have some low clouds hanging around. cape and the islands as well. some sunshine breaking out near buzzards bay. that has helped those temperatures to boost up a touch. we are sort of playing a squeeze play game today. these two low pressure systems, trying to join up. they will do that to the north with their energy there. for us, though that, does mean that we could see some snow flurries dragging through into the afternoon. nothing much to look at. nothing much to talk about. from nashua down through fitchburg, even down through worcester, some light snow shower activity. i don't really expect this to last for very long or amount to too much. you can see all that's behind it. we keep kind of pumping this moisture in through the afternoon and evening hours. a coating to an inch, a possibility. most likely spots for that will be northwest of 495. and also on grassy surfaces, patio furniture. you see where our temperatures are. we are well above freefzing, as you get down into southeastern massachusetts. it could be some rain showers inside of 495. looking ahead through the timeline here. you can see those waves trying to work through as we get into this afternoon. clearing out overnight tonight. maybe an early flurry. and those lows, 25-32. it gets a touch breezy as well. for more on that wind timeline, danielle? >> danielle: thanks. these winds aren't too bad. something to keep in mind. especially as we head into tonight, into dinnertime and the overnight hours. the good news, though, as you notice by tomorrow morning, things are calming down. if you have plans to go outside, maybe enjoy a nice walk tomorrow morning, you won't have to deal with the wind. if you are heading out, maybe planning to do some skiing this weekend, great weekend to do that. 0's and some snow showers tomorrow. look at that. the sun is coming out on sunday. temperatures klining into the 40's. if you are traveling this weekend, mostly clear. no issues throughout much of the central part of the country. we do have a couple more bringing some rain showers up that way. speaking of el nino, that is bringing them those storms. our last el nino winter. that was '97 to '98. 25 inches. back in '98 to '98. just pointing that out. we don't have significant snowfall in the future. huh, sgli >> bri: not in the next 7 days. you just never know. something could pop up and surprise us. winter-lovers, don't give up hope just yet. we have had the cool air with us. we will get a boost into next week. look at the long-range forecast models. this only lasts for the next 7-10 days with this mild air working. in and then it does look like it gets colder for the rest of february. so i'm going to go ahead and say maybe the groundhog could see his shadow on tuesday. which means six more weeks of winter. again, winter is not over yet. anything could happen. >> christa: that is for sure. bri, thank you. let's look at the ice sculpture exhibit. this is in japan. capturing so many people's attention. so beautiful. you can see why. crystal clear water. you see how elaborate some of those pieces are as well. and they are saying no snow fell as the sculptures were being made. the ice is really just pristine. >> sarah: coming up on 7 news, a recipe chock full of flavor that's sure to warm up your weekend. stick around to see how to make a tasty tomato soup. >> christa: hollywood coming to cambridge. harvard's hasty pudding awards [mother] yeah but this neighborhood,i feel like it's got a lot of what we were kinda talking about. the kitchen is light and bright,new. we should definitely go see it.
