President obama and irans new president speak by phone today, making it the highestlevel contact between the two sides since 1979. The topic is irans controversial Nuclear Program. The u. S. Believes iran is trying to make a nuclear weapon. But iran claims its Nuclear Program is for peaceful purposes. President obama says both men told their aides to getgoing on an agreement. I reiterated to president rouhani what i said in newyork that while there will be important obstacles to moving forward and success is by no means guaranteed that we can reach a comprehensive solution. Ambassador to the un Samantha Power said the vote is significant as it represents the First Time Since the start of syrias civil war that the Security Council is imposing binding obligations on the country. The resolution does not authorize the automatic use of force if syria is said to be violation, as was previously sought by the white house. President obama said its his threat of u. S. Military power that pushed syrian leaders to agree to destroy their chemical weapons which syria allegedly used against its own people. President obamas asking congress not to shut down the government. The deadline for a spending resolution just three days away, with lawmakers split by partisan differences over obamacare. Shelby lin reports from washington. As the clock ticks toward the deadline, law makers in washington struggle to come up with a plan to prevent a government shut down. Avoiding that scenario is what both republicans and democrats seem to want. So then why is this still an issue . The problem, a deep divide among House Republicans. Democratic House Minority leader nancy pelosi said it comes down to negotiation. Its impossible for democrats to negotiate with House Republicans when they cant even negotiate with themselves. The key issue is over obamacare. Tea Party Conservatives want it defunded. But the president says he wont yield on his landmark law. The House Republicans are so concerned with appeasing the tea party that theyve threatened a government shut down or worse unless i gut or repeal the Affordable Care act. Thats not going to happen. Sen. Marco Rubio R Florida i dont know anyone who wants to shut down the government. The only thing we want to shut down is obamacare. The Senate Already passed a spending plan that restores funding for obamacare. That plan is now back with the house where tea Party Conservatives are vowing to reject it. They could send the measure back to the senate with changes. Its a game of political hot potato, all as a government shut down hangs in the balance. Im shelby lin reporting. Wgns Frank Holland is in the newsroom with that and maybe some movement on a pension reform plan. Frank . Good evening. Pension reform has been a political football in illinois for a long time. Two courts essentially threw a flag on governor quinns big play to veto lawmaker salaries. However, despite all this controversy, a key lawmaker tells me the ball, pension reform, is getting closer to the goal line. The checks are getting cut. State lawmakers will receive their july and august salaries after a cook county judge ruled governor pat quinns veto of legislator pay was unconsitutional. The move was designed to force progress on pension reform. Quinns attorneys are now appealing that decision. The whole purpose of this is to get pension reform. The governor is also making his case in the court of public opinion. It is urgent. It is an emergency. He says the 100 billion dollar liability and the 5 Million Dollars a day in Interest Payments that taxpayers are burdned with, made the veto necessary. He believes taxpayers agree. I think it is very important to resolve this issue and do it right away and the legislature has a responsibility to work hard on this issue, and not to duck and dodge. A committee of ten lawmakers given the responsibility of coming up with a solution to the pension crisis is making progress, despite the paycheck fight, according to chairman state senator kwame raoul. We have been committed to working on this and it has not been about whether or not we get our paychecks. It has been about the urgency of solving this problem. Sources tell wgn the latest proposal would reduce the pension shortfall by 140 billion dollars over 30 years. That plan would decrease employee contributions and tie yearly cost of living increases to half of the Consumer Price index. Increases would be capped at 4 percent with a minimum of a one percent raise every year. We are in the red zone and we should score a touchdown on this on behalf of the taxpayers of this date. You just heard state senator raoul say his committee is close on a consensus plan. However even he didnt have a timetable for when something could come up for a vote. Lawmakers have already received their checks for july and august. Those will direct deposit should get their september checks by monday. A lawsuit challenging illinois ban on samesex marriage is moving forward. The ruling today in Cook County Circuit Court launching a debate gay marriage opponents had hoped to prevent. Wgns julian crews has the story. Both sides claiming victory after a judge dismisses three of the five claims in a lawsuit brought by samesex couples. Those who believe the illinois ban on gay marriage say they have accomplished their goal, to have the lawsuit heard in court. We can move forward on our offendable mental right to marriage claims and the idea that it discriminates against lesbians and gay couples we are disappointed on that part of the ruling but we are confident that the illinois lost on the marriage will be toppled by our courts. They argued that it is the state legislatures will to alter illinoisan law and the Senate Following 13 other states and the District Of Columbia who have already approved a samesex marriage bill. Mia and Rachel Gurevitz are typical sisters who, along with their parents, are doing the best they can to navigate an atypical course. It began when mia was 18months old the toddler was having trouble gaining weight and growing. Lisa gurevitz, rachel and mias mother we started a five month odyssey of endless tests and procedures and results. Mia has an inoperable brain tumor on her pituitary gland the positive news or hopefully more promising is that its slow growing and its not aggressive. Still, the treatments arent easy mia needs regular chemotherapy to keep the tumor in check and gets monthly antibiotic infusions at lurie childrens. She takes it like a champ and so does her big sister. With rachel it was hard. She was shuffled around a lot. Dan would stay home in the morning and get her to school. Someone else would pick her up. Wed have her at aftercare. She would stay at friends houses in the middle of the week. Theres attention focused on mia. Even though it comes from a place of love and care and concern, rachel feels like mia gets some special treatment.
