now knowing that the people they are supposed to respect knock to their center down? >> demolition crews took down a disputed chicago fieldhouse as angry protesters try to stop them. many of them were taken away in handcuffs. good evening. i'm robert jordan. >> i am jacqui day. we are live in pilsen with tonight's top story. jackie, activists did everything possible to try and prevent the demolition of their beloved community center known as la casita, but their efforts did not pay off. that community center is no longer standing. activists are demanding answers from alderman danny sublease. -- danny solis. today, a bobcat certitude demolished the community fieldhouse, but a group of parents and community activist ran in front of it and chased it away. people surrounded the building known as la casita. chicago police were called in. that is when the protest became heated. were arrested. those who would not budge had to be carried off. throughout the day, a crying finish the job. -- crane finished the job. some fought back tears. a bitter defeat for fat -- or families who wanted the building to stay or at least replaced. >> it has been here for so long. that the determined fieldhouse, which also served as a library for whittier elementary school, was not safe for occupancy. hadprevious cps chiefs promised to bring the building up to code, but that never happened. it will not be replaced with the soccer field, basketball court, and playground for a neighboring private school. >> this shows you how cps does not tell -- care about the children in this neighborhood. >> parents complained that cps gave no warning about the demolition. according to cps, parents declined an offer to have a face-to-face meeting this morning. activists said that the meeting would have to be at the fieldhouse. activists do not want to leave the building unattended because they were concerned it would be torn down. protests and the late afternoon vigil did not work. the community center was torn down by 5:00 p.m. >> i do not know that we can stop this. it keeps playing itself out neighborhood by neighborhood across the city. >> activists are also frustrated with alderman danny solis who was a no-show at a planned meeting at four as academy. >> he has been given a sum different stories. we want them to come out of hiding to listen to the demands of the community. tonight, alderman solis released a statement saying that the community center was deteriorated and unsafe and needed to be torn down, but at the same time, he said he was willing to work with the community on improvements. wgn news. >> thank you. at least two people were killed and 14 others wounded in overnight gun violence across the city. one man was shot last night around 11:30 in the eighth and -- 1800 block of north polaski road. an argument over beer between the two coworkers at a logan square party left one dead and the other critically injured. one person is in custody. two teens were also wounded in separate shootings this afternoon on the city's west and south side. both victims were taken to a nearby hospital. police are also looking into another murder, this one a 75 are old man who was watching to wash -- 75-year-old man who bludgeoned to death. according to a neighbor, the victim was the owner of a three- story building that houses a barbershop on the first floor. or had not been a fire recently in the building, that the victim was still living in the apartment. >> a fire in the southwest stripmall sent a chicago firefighter to the hospital. the initial call came in at about 7:00 a.m., and firefighters responded to the mall on the 5400 block of south kinzie avenue. the building housed a grocery store in several other businesses. -- and several other businesses. more than 100 firemen came to the scene. the unidentified firefighter was hurt and treated for a minor medicalt mercy hospital center. investigators are probing the cause of that blaze. the family of a chicago man who disappeared six years ago is launching a new search for him. spiro waseau -- john less -- was last seen at the company he co-owned in chicago. there have been no clues to his disappearance. his sister and investigators conducted a search today in the woods behind st. francis: we can. they had not said why they were looking in that area. they plan to continue the search throughout the weekend. >> testing began today on the new automated speed cameras that are being installed and safety zones around chicago public schools. the company that is setting those up, the american traffic solutions, performed the tests. the testing-- phase is expected to last about two weeks. once fully implemented, the city expects to have cameras in 50 safety zones this year. and [ male announcer ] your kids make great things. so give them a tasty, wholesome snack that has eight grams of whole grain... and is now made with real strawberries and bananas. honey maid teddy grahams. two new flavors now made with real fruit. >> you are watching wgn news at 9:00. thehe former director of antiviolence group called ceasefire illinois says that he is running for governor. tio hardiman says his decision was not made overnight. and in may, he was arrested accused of domestic battery against his wife. his wife later decided not to pursue the charges against him. hardiman says he knew he would be asked about the issue during his campaign. >> i knew that was going to,. i understand this. i was charged, not convicted. i did not wake up overnight to run for governor. i have been thinking about it for years. i had a couple things my background that i thought would bar me from running. now that my business is in the public, i'm running for government. -- governor. >> hardiman says he needs to raid -- raise three quarters of $1 million to get his campaign in gear. he says he wants to build a casino in chicago, resolve the state's pension crisis, and allow prison inmates to have intimate visits with their spouses. >> governor pat quinn went to lawley field to sign a new for pets. it targets so-called happiness -- puppy mills. quinn says the new law is aimed at protecting pets and their owners. >> we want to make sure that we do not have puppy mills that are taking advantage of people in our state or any other state. this law that i am signing today is all about protecting our pets and protecting our families who love their pets. >> that law takes effect in january. it will ensure that all animals in illinois are treated ethically and responsibly. >> you might see children's hospital -- hosted a back-to- school fair today, offering a variety of screenings. the screenings included school physicals, dental checkups, and health counseling. children who participated received free school supplies while their families received health education materials and access to community resources. health counseling was offered with information about nutrition, diabetes, asthma, and sickle cell disease. >> a student who helped his homeless friend graduate high school was paid back today for his acts of kindness. a special fundraiser was held roberts to help him pay for college. roberts convinced his family to take and fellow classmate david peak after peak's family lost their home. it ended up that david peake got a full ride to college while robert had to spend the summer working to help pay for his tuition. today he got a little help from his boss, the yacht club. he plans to attend the university of pennsylvania in the fall. summer is about to make a comeback in chicagoland. >> dan ramsey is coming up in a minute. he says we will soon be returning to 90 degrees. even after all the rain we had earlier? >> for the year, we are running a surplus. only an inch for the month of august so far. we are about an inch and 74 hundredths below normal. promotingnt obama is his immature healthcare reform program in his weekly address. while republicans are unhappy with the law. his comments come as some gop members in congress are calling for an effort to define obamacare in an up coming budget deadline. >> a lot of republicans seem to believe that if they can gum up the works and make this law fail, they will somehow be sticking it to me. but they would just be sticking it to you. calleden say that if you their office with questions about the law, they will refuse to help. call me old-fashioned, but that is lousy constituent service. >> the president is urging everyone to find out more about how the new affordable health care law works by going to healthcare.gov. republicans in their weekly address are calling on mr. obama to delay the individual mandate in the law that requires americans to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty. >> the president claims that this law is working the way it is supposed to. but clearly it is not. not when the administration is missing deadlines come issuing waivers, and granting delays handover fist. become so bad that the administration wants to rely on the honor system to verify who is eligible for subsidies. passed a bill this summer urging the administration to delay the individual mandate in the health care law. but it doesn't stand much of a chance of succeeding in the democratic controlled senate. >> in britain, police are looking at new information in the 1997 deaths of princess diana and her boyfriend. the trouble is we do not know what that information might be. police are staying quiet. one british newspaper says it may be related to claims made by a former special forces soldier in 2008. a corner concluded that princess diana's fatal car crash in paris was a result of grossly negligent driving involving improper vehicles chasing the company -- the couple and the driver of their mercedes. august 31 will mark the 16th anniversary of diana's death. >> it is always meet to watch explosive experts at work demolishing buildings without even breaking the windows at a neighbors house. experts were at work in dayton, ohio today. >> fire in the hole! >> fire in the hole! >> >> a series of strategically placed explosives brought down the century-old schwinn building in downtown dayton. the 12 story building, along with a portion of the former "dayton daily news," were imploded to make room for a new 200 apartment complex. >> how did they do that?
