winds to the big island of hawaii. the mayor of hilo says more than 600 residents have gone to hurricane shelters. iselle could bring up to a foot of rain, life-threatening storm surges, flash floods and mudslides. the category one storm is the first to hit the islands since 19-92 and only the fourth since 19-50. a search for scraps of metal costs a brother and sister their lives when they are hit that are not operating this morning. #1212 due at 7:00 a.m., 1226, 1228, 1244 which normally arrives downtown at 8:17 a.m.. the two were killed at 21st on the west side just before 5:00 a.m. thursday just a mile from the western avenue stop on the line that runs between lawrence and union. people who were at the scene who identify themselves as relatives of the siblings said there were siblings in their fifties were likely pushing a cart looking for scrap metal, something they did regularly. the brother was partially blind. >> have the family is out here. most of the neighbors were out here praying trying to give them some hope and keeping them calmed down. >> some trains did start running last night but there were several hours behind schedule. metra cannot operate a full schedule on passenger. the victim stepped in to stop the fight... that's when he was struck in the face. he was taken to northwestern memorial hospital. police are investigating the case as a battery. police in south suburban midlothian are looking for a suspect who's been targeting schav was assaulted and robbed. on monday, a masked gunman approached a 17-year old girl in her driveway. less than a week before that -- a 22-year old -- was attacked walking home from the metra station. and in july, a 26-year old mother was attacked while holding her infant child. residents are on edge. >> we've never investigating. two men are facing charges after shoplifting.. then attempting to assault an off- duty chicago police officer. jonathon koziol and robert hack are accused of loading up their car wednesday night with stolen groceries. then, trying to flee the northwest side jewel. the officer says she moved toward the car to try and stop them. but, the men started driving at her, so she fired two warning shots at the car. no one was injured. they're charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, and retail theft with a previous conviction. it was one friend testifying against another in a double murder trial in joliet. alsia massaro took the stand in the trial of 20 year-old bethany mckee for the murders of terrance rankins and eric glover at massaro's joliet home in january, 2013. massaro told the court it was mckee's idea to rob rankins, even saying the suspects agreed on a signal that the attacks were about to happen. but, mckee's father argues massaro's version of events don't add up. >> on the stand today she doesn't recall 98% of anything that was asked of her. >> we want to know what happened. but the details, it's hard to take sometimes. it's hard to take. >>massaro testified she found god... and the urge to tell the truth about the crime. massaro cut a plea deal and is serving a 10-year prison term. governor quinn is moving forward on building a third airport in the south suburbs. the governor is calling for a forum on september 23-rd to collect ideas for the peotone airport. he's inviting developers and air carriers to share their input with i-dot officials. so far the state has spent 76- million dollars for more than half of the land needed for the first phase of the project. but none of the major airlines that serve o'hare and midway, say but he's currently a free agent. a man has been convicted of gunning down an un-armed teenager on his porch in michigan. a jury found theodore wafer guilty of second degree murder in the death of renisha mcbride. he shot the 19-year-old in the face last november when she came to his door, intoxicated and prosecutors say she was just looking for help. someone was breaking in. he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. caterpillars may look cute. but a species could send you to the hospital. the number of asp caterpillars has spiked in central texas lately. experts say it's because of the demetrius ivory for a check of the weather. hi, demetrius. >> which had a nice stretch. this time of the year temperatures don't move much. a good weekend is coming up. high temperature of 81. over the weekend will have the highest in the upper '70's and low eighties with no rain. the breeze could slow down a bit closer to lake we will have temperatures in the mid-70s. lane tech her school, we tabs on that. >> president obama is authorizing military force to protect a consulate in iraq and to help thousands of people. last night the president announced he's authorizing targeted airstrikes against militants who are taking over areas in northern iraq. the president says those airstrikes will happen if the militants advance toward the city of erbil which holds an american consulate. he says the militants are slaughtering civilians who refuse to convert to islam. the survivors are forced to live on a mountain where there's no food or water. >> when we face a situation like we do on the mountain was innocent people facing the prospect of violence on her thick scale, we have a mandate to help, in this case it's a request from the iraqi government. when we have the unique abilities to avert a problem i believe we cannot turn a blind eye. >> the president says the military is already conducting airdrops of food and water to the victims. he also says the u-s is not being dragged into another war in iraq. the cease fire between israel and hamas is over, and rocket attacks have resumed. israel says more than 18 rockets were fired from gaza after the 72 hour truce ended this morning. no casualties or damage were reported. israel's military says it responded with its own strikes on militant targets across the gaza strip. all this comes after negotiations in egypt failed to extend the cease fire. hamas says it will continue negotiations, but israel says today's rocket attacks broke the premise of those talks. the flag-draped coffin of the first army general to die on a battlefield since vietnam arrived at dover air force base yesterday. major general harold greene's family, the army chief of staff and the secretary of the army were on hand. a gunman in an afghan army uniform opened fire at a training base early this week, killing greene and injuring more than a dozen other soldiers, including eight americans. the big island of hawaii is feeling the effects of hurricane iselle as the storms outer bands throw off rain and 65 mile per hour winds. in hilo, more than 600 people have sought refuge in red cross shelters. the category one storm is the first to hit the islands in nearly a quarter of a century. the governor has already declared a state of emergency to free up disaster funding for clean-up and repairs. a search for scraps of metal caused a brother with aggravated assault of a police officer, and retail theft with a previous conviction. an early morning drug bust on the west side pulled in more than 30 gang members, including one high ranking member of the gangster disciples. authorities describe 55-year- old johnny herndon as the patriarch of a gangster disciple faction. they allege he ran two lucrative open-air drug spots in west garfield park. authorities say today's arrests were a matter of getting the right criminals at the right time. >> yesterday it was operational. today it is gone. >> now our plan is to hold on to that territory, break the cycle of demand, organize the community and clean it up and surely we will back out eventually. >>16 guns were confiscated along with hundreds of grams of heroin, crack and powder cocaine. it could be months before chicago teachers union president karen lewis decides to run for mayor. lewis says she will start collecting signatures to get on the ballot later this month. but she won't file any paperwork with the election board until after that. she says she still needs a campaign staff and to find out if she can raise enough money to go against mayor emanuel. lewis also says she has to consider if this is right for her family. she told the chicago tribune that the odds of her running are fifty-fifty. chicago public schools says students in grades two through eight have improved in math at reading. that's according to an analysis of standardized test scores used to rate teachers, school, and principles. though there was an improvement, only 7-th and 8-th graders met national reading averages. in fact, 8-th graders surpassed them. on the other hand, only half of all elementary students met scores matching the national average in both subjects. the state department is evacuating families of embassy workers in liberia as the nation struggles to contain an ebola virus outbreak. the move is described as a precaution. 932 people have died from ebola in liberia and neighboring guinea and sierra leone. cases have also been reported in nigeria. liberia's president has declared a state of emergency, saying the epidemic has overwhelmed the nation's healthcare vehicles and two homes in san antonio, texas. the little boy squeezes through the white house fence causing a commotion with the secret service. the say the boy wasn't questioned he did get a timeout by a surprising amount of darkness and killing in this pg-13. movie. it's a dean's list "c plus." and the best movie of the weekend, dean says, is the daniel radcliffe- zoe kazan romantic comedy,
