happened at 123rd and south state street at 7:30 last night. a volkswagen passat collided with a chrysler 200 -- sending the passat into a porch of a nearby home. the fire department says a man and two woman were taken to the hosptial in serious to critical condition. two teenage girls were taken to the hospital in serious condition. a 63-year-old man was hurt in a hit-and-run crash in logan square. it happened in a bank parking lot at lawrence and western, yesterday afternoon. police say someone driving a gray nissan rogue backed into the man, and then took off. the s-u-v had a broken rear license plate cover, and a dent in the driver's side door. another c-t-a train derailed on the blue line. a forest park bound train hit a tire that was on the tracks, as it was leaving the cicero station. officials say a set of wheels on one of the train cars slightly came off the tracks, just before eight last night. shuttles busses were brought in for two hours until workers got the train running again. the c-t-a says the tire came from a semi truck driving on the eisenhower expressway, but they don't know how it got on the tracks. at least ten people are dead after a charter bus filled with students collided with a semi- truck in northern california. andrew spencer reports. >> to large vehicles collided in or lend, calif., 100 mi. north of sacramento. >> a fedex truck was going southbound just north of the 30 to exit. for an unknown reason it went through the center divider and collided head on. >> the boss and the trucks caught on fire. the flames gutted the inside of both. firefighters helped some victims away from the scene. many of them clearly injured. most of them students on their way to visit a school to attend a spring preview day. >> we have 48 people on board. 44 students. three chaperons and one driver. >> the university president issued a statement reading that the university is deeply saddened by the tragic accident that occurred including the charter bus filled with students. our hearts go out to those who have been affected. we are here to support them and their families in any way possible. just the sight of the wreckage of the burned and twisted metal is a shock to many people who live here. >> eric king was in flames. >> it's only about three blocks from our house. it is sad. >> some dead, others injured. mostly students who were looking toward the future. >>early this morning, authorities said three adult chaperones, five students, and the drivers of the bus and fed- ex truck were all killed. the search for a missing malaysian jetliner may be nearing its end. the leader of the search effort says, the team has narrowed the search to roughly a 15-mile square in the indian ocean. and searchers are confident they know, within a few miles, where the missing plane's "black box" is. four electronic "pings" in the past week helped narrow the search. a fifth one, reported yesterday morning, now appears to be unrelated to the plane. the search leaders say, they have yet to retrieve any wreckage from the plane. west suburban lyons has laid off one-third of its police force. judy wang joins us *live from lyons with more. >> they tried for months to agree on a new contract. many in the suburb of 10,000 people had hoped it would not come to this. at midnight, about one-third of its police force was gone. overcoat seven officers received layoff notices. it was all due to budgetary constraints. the only police say it's 16 officers they say on some ships there's only one or two officers on duty. also the detective addition is eliminated. the past november they voted to cut $1 million for the police department budget. then it assured residents any further cuts would not jeopardize the safety. the officer layoffs were considered a worst-case scenario. the village and contract talks wanted to rest and cut the pay benefits describing them as a draconian measures. >> we decided to work with them to avoid layoffs. the entire time they didn't produce documents to support. the reason is financial. >> the police chief recently retired landfill as a manager. a former chief is running the police department. they declined requests for interviews. >>a middle school in homer glen is giving students a lesson on the dangers of mis-using technology today, as the will country sheriff investigates reports of a sexting incident. hadley middle school officials notified authorities on monday that a female student may have been sent a graphic photo. the school notified parents that several sixth graders might be involved, and possibly students at homer junior high. the sheriff's office has not said if it will pursue criminal charges. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a three-year-old was rushed to the hospital after falling from a second floor window on the northwest side. it happened yesterday afternoon at an apartment in the 47-hundred block of west addison. it's not known what the boy was doing when he broke through a screen. he is expected to be o-k. a man is charged with raping a four-year-old girl in calumet park - after her allegedly kicked in the door of the girl's home and assaulted her. prosecutors say demetrio campbell tried to lure the girl and her sister to his home across the street sunday but they ran to their home. he allgedly followed them and broke into the home. he ordered two adults in the home to leave and then raped the girl. police officers found campbell hiding in a closet, smoking a cigarette. chicago police are still trying to determine the motive behind the murder of local rapper mario hess. known as "big glo" and "blood money," hess was shot at least ten times wednesday on a street in west englewood. his manager says it could have been a robbery. police are also trying to determine whether a gang feud played a role in the shooting. a man was robbed around the corner from mayor rahm emanuel's ravenswood home. police say someone got out of a white van and asked the victim what he was doing in the area. when the victim responded that he was deaf, the suspect stole his backpack and sped off. the victim flagged down a member of the mayor's security detail for help. francis cardinal george was honored last night for his 15 years at the chicago archdiocese. an event at the union league club paid tribute to the cardinal, for his support of the "solidarity bridge" mission -- an outreach of healing and empowerment in latin america. cardinal george will be honored again this afternoon with a doctorate in theology at the catholic theological union academic and conference center. this week, the cardinal announced that his battle with cancer will force him to miss this month's ceremony in rome, canonizing pope john paul the second. stephen colbert has been tapped to replace david letterman when he retires as the host the "late show" on c-b-s. colbert plans to drop the satirical conservative character he's played for nine years on comedy central's "the colbert report". he says he looks forward to being himself, and hopes fans still find him funny. those who knew him from his days in chicago say, that won't be a problem. >> this guy is a talented actor and a talented writer. real artist. he has such a strong moral compass. >> we're very fortunate to have him. obviously he is a brilliant comedian but as you read and learn more about him he is also a very thoughtful guy. he exemplifies very well. >> colbert is the third northwestern grad to land a job on a popular kansas city zoo. the los angeles county sheriff's department admits that it mistakenly shot and killed an aspiring t-v producer during a standoff earlier this week. 30-year-old john winkler was shot monday night as he fled from an apartment in west hollywood. police were called to the scene for reports of man holding people hostage with a knife. winkler and another man ran out of the apartment - and three deputies shot winkler, thinking he was the suspect. however, officers found the actual suspect inside the apartment attacking another man. he had just moved to los angeles three months ago. the officers were removed from patrol but are expected to return. >>police in murrysville, pennsylvania, are still piecing together the motive for a high school stabbing rampage that injured 21 people. 16 year-old alex hribal is charged as an adult in the stabbings at franklin regional senior high school. the assistant principal stopped the attack by tackling (ry-bull). while still healing, one of the victims is talking about forgiveness. >> if he had more friends or somebody to help him out or to show him something. maybe it could have been different. i just hope that one day i can forgive him and everyone else who got hurt can forgive him. he needs to forgive himself. >>hribal faces four counts of attempted murder and 21 counts of aggravated assault. police seized his home computer as evidence. the suspect in a deadly hit- and-run crash at a florida daycare center has turned himself in to police. authorities say robert corchado's vehicle rammed a car, forcing it to crash into the day care center in orlando. then corchado fled the scene. a four-year-old girl died, and a dozen other children were injured. police found corchado's s-u-v, abandoned, a short distance from the center. seven chimpanzees that escaped from their enclosure at the kansas city zoo were captured. the chimpanzees escaped from their habitat yesterday afternoon using a six-foot log. one of the chimps was seen scaling and walking on a wall. a zoo spokesperson says the chimpanzees were never in any public areas. any visitors who were on the property during the escape, were taken to safe areas. the chimps will not be on exhibit today while crews try to figure out how to keep them from escaping again. the owner of a b-m-w parked his car about six inches from a fire hydrant in boston. you can guess what happened next. a fire broke out... and to get a hose hooked up to the hydrant, firefighters had to move the car a couple of feet, then smash its windows and run the hose right through the car. besides facing a big repair bill, the owner of the b-m-w will get a hundred-dollar ticket for illegal parking. one online poster joked, "b-m-w equals break my window." >> that's why i california highway. both vehicles burst into flames. at least 10 people were killed. firefighters helped survivors get away from the wreckage. many of them were clearly injured. the highway patrol indicates the truck driver lost control. the students were going to attend a preview day at humboldt state university. the crash happened about 100 miles north of sacramento. >> going south bound on 5 island of papua new guinea early this morning. the earthquake registered a magnitude of 7-point-3 and was centered on bougainville island. there are no reports of injuries or damage and there is no threat of a tsunami. the country is in the pacific's "ring of fire" and earthquakes are common in the region. police force lays off one-third of their staff. judy wang joins us with more. >> it took effect at midnight. 16 full-time officers and no longer a detective division. the village and the police union tried for months to reach a contract agreement with no deal. worst-case scenario came true. the village sent layoff notices a week ago citing budgetary constraints. the fraternal order of police says with the cuts only one or two officers are on duty during some shifts in the southwest suburbs. the village board voted this past november to cut $1 million from the police department budget. at the time the village manager said the final chapter has not yet been written. the layoffs also, about one week after village announces the retirement of the police chief. the village wanted drastic concessions to pay in their benefits which it simply could not accept. >> tried to work for a solution for the layoffs. the entire time they didn't produce documentations. so the reason they say is financial but we have yet to see that. >> i think everybody in the community would rather put the money into the police department in supporting the police officers and cut non- essential workers. >> the village manager, a former oak brook police chief is running the police department for now. "chief keef" will not be evicted from a mansion he rents in highland park. the teenage rapper, whose real name is keith cozart, owed 30- thousand dollars in overdue rent to his landlord. a judge gave him until april 20th to catch up, or risk being evicted. his lawyer says he is now paid in full. oscar pistorius is back on the witness stand this morning in south africa. the paralympian is facing a third day of cross-examination in his trial for murdering his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. he shot her through a bathroom door last year. he claims he thought he was shooting at a home invader. but the prosecutor is portraying pistorius as a selfish hothead who is reckless with guns. and he says pistorius is adapting the events of the fateful night, to reconstruct a story that makes him appear innocent. an intelligence report on the boston marathon bombings concludes, the government did a good job sharing information with other investigators. the review is not as flattering about intelligence that could have *prevented the bombing. the summary finds, the f-b-i should have done a more thorough check into the background of bomb suspect tamerlan tsarnaev . the report recommends that the f-b-i develop better procedures for notifying local authorities about terror threats. a high-ranking member of mexico's notorious sinaloa drug cartel is said to be cooperating with american investigators, as they prepare to prosecute the cartel's leader. police say, vicente zambada- niebla pled guilty in chicago last year to conspiring to distribute tons of cocaine and heroin. he faces life in prison... but if he helps put away cartel boss joaquin "el chapo" guzman, his sentence may be reduced. guzman was captured in february. health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius is stepping down after five years on the job. sebelius was a rising star in the obama administration, until the roll out of the affordable care act. she was heavily criticized when the healthcare-dot-gov website crashed last fall, and people had trouble signing up for insurance. the president has accepted sebelius' resignation. he is expected to nominate office of management and budget director sylvia burwell to the post. a woman is facing criminal charges after throwing a shoe at former secretary of state hillary clinton during a speech in las vegas. the woman's name has not been released and authorities aren't sure what she was protesting but she was quickly escorted from the room by the secret service. >> was that a vat? thank goodness she did not play softball like i did. >>clinton was speaking to a group about metal recycling - she commented she "didn't know solid waste recycling was that controversial". they're the state champs in robotics competition... and now couldn't the students going to the best world robotics competition?
