this area. sewer work continues along central and 64th. that will block in part of the intersection. the numbers look good. no accidents to report. >>we start with some breaking newsa man ran a red light on the northwest side, and struck a police car, injuring two officers. it happened late last night at kedzie and warren, as the officers were on their way to check out a report of a man with a gun. they had their emergency lights on... but the other driver didn't stop. he's expected to face alcohol- related charges. the officers' injuries are not life-threatening. a person was shot near a roller skating rink in south suburban hazel crest. the shooting started across the street from the markham roller rink on dixie highway yesterday evening. the victim ended up at the roller rink. authorities are still investigating. we'll bring you more information as we learn it. a hammond police officer shot and killed a man during a domestic disturbance. authorities were called to the 66 hundred block of ohio avenue in hammond last night. police shot a man that they say was stabbing another person at the scene. the man's identity has not been released. we do not know the condition of the stabbing victim. more information is expected to be released later today. we're expecting several inches of snow today, and that could all start during the morning rush. tonya francisco is live at enough to make even pollyanna sick of winter. scientists have called this crazy winter santas' revenge. that was the name of a research paper recently presented at the meeting of the american association for the amendment of science held in chicago. if i understand correctly, we can blame this winter on a jet stream which is all out of whack because of warming in the arctic which means it's not only cold weather here too long it is pushing for the to the south but places like atlanta. while it's warmer in places like alaska and the north pole where santa lives. in chicago we have seen 22 days of below zero temperatures this season. the chicago tribune came up with some fun facts. to put it into perspective you have to be at least 32 years old to have experienced the last time it was this cold back in 1981-'82 when ronald reagan was in his first term as president. when it comes to this note, we've had more than 62 in.. we have not seen that much since 1978-'79. if you are younger than 35, this is new to you. and like we said, another four-8 in. is coming. we are alive at the lake forest. >>a plane hijacking in ethiopia has ended safely in geneva, switzerland. the plane took off from the ethiopian capital of addis ababa shortly after midnight local time. ethiopian airlines flight 702 was ordered to proceed to geneva. the hijacker was arrested, and the passengers are all safe. there's no word yet on his motive. venezuela is expelling three u- s diplomats from the country. the diplomats are being accused of conspiring against the government. this came after the state department expressed concern after three anti-government protesters were killed, and an arrest warrant was issued for an opposition leader. but the venezuelan government says that opposition leader is the one behind the violence. the search for a missing southern illinois university student from northwest suburban morton grove continues. now the family is offering 15 thousand dollars for information leading to his recovery. 19-year-old pravin varughese was last seen wednesday night leaving a party on the campus in carbondale. phone records show he called a friend in chicago almost two hours later. a short time after that, varughese sent out a tweet saying his knuckles were bloody ... suggesting he may have been in a fight. family and friends say this is unlike him. >> he is somewhere. somebody has locked him up somewhere. if you have him, please release him. >>police haven't revealed whether they suspect foul play. toxicology tests will be needed to find out how a university of chicago student died in his dorm room. 20 year old nicholas barnes was found dead at the campus' international house, after an odor was reported on saturday. his body was decomposed, and an autopsy failed to find a cause of death. the university says there's no sign of foul play. barnes was from pittsburgh and lived by himself. he last used his security keycard ten days ago, but someone could have let him in the building after that. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. bail was denied for *this man who is charged with killing a toddler on chicago's south side. vernon henry is charged with first degree murder in the death of 20-month-old adonta mccoy. police found mccoy in critical condition thursday night in his mother's apartment at 69th and cornell. the boy died saturday afternoon. cook county prosecutors say henry admitted to shaking and choking the boy ... then slamming him into a dresser because he was crying. henry thought the boy needed to toughen up. henry is the boyfriend of the child's mother. a 15-year-old girl from romeoville who was shot in her mother's car last week has died. the girl was getting into the car to go to school thursday morning, when police say her ex- boyfriend erick maya approached the car and shot both the girl and her mother. the girl died saturday. maya had already been charged with attempted murder... now, he'll also face a murder charge. a judge ordered *this man to be held without bail ... after police say he fatally shot a teenager as he shoveled snow on the near west side last week. devon mccauley is charged with one count of first-degree murder. 17-year-old ronald hayes was shoveling snow with two other people, when police say mccauley walked up and shot him in the head. hayes died at the scene. both witnesses knew mccauley, and identified him as the shooter. authorities have not released a motive. chicago police are holding the final suspect in the attempted robbery of an off-duty cook county sheriff's sergeant. 15-year-old emannuel jackson is charged with first-degree murder, because the crime ended with his friend deonta mackey being shot to death. mackey held the gun on the sergeant, but was killed when the officer pulled his own gun. for the first time ever, u-i-c faculty could go on strike tomorrow. more than eleven-hundred teachers and staff are planning a two day strike. the move would force the university to cancel hundreds of classes. pay is the main issue. the union is asking for a four and a half percent pay raise for this year while the university is offering three and a quarter percent. more speed cameras have been installed around jefferson park and john harvard elementary school of excellence. right now those cameras are issuing warnings, but they will start issuing tickets on march 30th. also, the cameras around legion park and welles park have moved out of the warnings phase. tickets will now be issued to violators. it's day 10 in the olympics. the netherlands leads the overall medal count with 17. u-s-a and russia are tied for second place -- each with 16 total medals and four golds. norway and canada round out the top five. four years ago in vancouver, the americans had 24 medals, including seven golds, at this point of the games. local figure skater jason brown may have been busy in sochi, but he still found time to reach out to another olympian. the 19 year old highland park native send this out on the olympic twitter feed friday. it says, "sarah hendrickson, will you be my valentine?" hendrickson is also 19 and is the first woman to compete in ski jumping. she tweeted back, " how am i so lucky to be the lucky girl?!?! i would be honored." brown responded with, "my day is made! olympic experience complete." >> found dead saturday night at his home in middlesboro. emergency personnel had actually gone to his home about 90 minutes earlier after receiving a call. coots had been bitten by a snake on his right hand. but he refused treatment... even after the emergency responders warned him of the dangers of leaving the bite untreated. coots' son says his father had been bitten before, and didn't think much of it this time around. >> summed it up they would go home and suffer. anytime you lose a parent you never see it coming. >>coots appeared in a national geographic television show titled "snake salvation" preachers who defy the law to use snakes as part of their religious services. snake-handling, which is illegal in most places, is practiced as a test of faith. those who practice say that that true believers will not be harmed by the snakes. rescue teams in colorado have found the bodies ot two skiers who died in an avalanche saturday. it happened about a hundred miles southwest of denver. three colleagues suffered broken bones... two other were unharmed. saturday's avalanche was the latest in a string of deadly snowslides triggered by record snowfall and changing wind patterns. a science project ended with an explosion that put two boys in the hospital. the explosion broke windows and threw debris out of this house in seattle yesterday. one of the victims' fathers says they were working on a science project involving model rockets. he said the boys may have tried to start a fire in the fireplace with fuel intended for their rocket. both boys are recovering. police say they seized chemical powders and homemade fireworks so they could be destroyed. we only made those volcanoes with little vinegar or gel or something. >> baking soda and some other stuff right? >> i plane in eastern canada. police took the passenger away, and the plane continued to its destination. the passenger was arrested for causing a disturbance aboard an aircraft and property damage. he has killed people dozens of times before. this is a horrifying story. andrew spencer has the story. >> a woman accused of luring a man to his death says she has killed dozens before. >> i said what's the number? and she said under 100. >> a reporter for the daily item in sunbury, pa. finally got his jailhouse interview on friday. he says she floored him with claims of killing dozens of people starting when she was just 13. victims in alaska, texas, california and north carolina. >> i said, as you sit here do you have any remorse whatsoever? she said none. >> the 90 year-old and her husband have entered not guilty pleas in a separate case. police said they just wanted to kill someone together so they found a 42 year-old man threw a companionship at on the craigslist in november the body was found in the backyard of a home. police say he had been strangled and stabbed 20 times. the last number dialed from his cell phone led police to the suspects. they say she claims to of only killed those she considered bad people. the self- proclaimed satanist claims to have killed fewer than 100 as she stopped counting at 22. >> you can take everything else she said in the interview and in take all the numbers that she dropped out. but the surprising thing was the fact that she said if she got out she would do it again. >> whether her claims are true is hard to say, investigators say they're looking into it. >> bill clinton's sexual affair could be off-limits if hillary clinton runs for president. in the election. hillary clinton has her own record as in new york senator as secretary of state. also, despite the affair the clinton presidency resulted in positive economic times for the country. >>a new wgn/chicago tribune poll finds illinois republicans united on some issues, divided on others. as the republican gubernatorial candidates held another public forum yesterday, the new telephone survey revealed that three out of five republicans want the state's same-sex marriage law repealed -- though the margin is smaller in the chicago area. three-fifths say an increase in the state's minimum wage would kill jobs. more than three-fifths want the state's income tax hike rolled teenager to death. prosecutors are already saying they will re-try dunn. he admitted that he killed jordan davis outside a convenience store in 2012, after asking davis and his friends to turn down the loud music in their car. but dunn said he fired in self- defense because he saw one of the teens pull a shotgun. by the time police found the car, there was no gun inside. jurors convicted dunn of *attempted murder, but couldn't reach an agreement on the murder charge. *kickstarter , a popular crowd- funding website, was hacked. law enforcement alerted *kickstarter of the hack, and the site immediately closed the security breach. kickstarter's c-e-o said no credit card information was stolen, but an unknown number of customer data was accessed. people should change their account
