sandwich. >> heather: jason brewer in the storm tracker weather center. the snow on the way out right now but a few spots. >> jason: yeah, a few impacts to get through here, the nor easter well south of our coastline. over the ocean. but the pack side, still a little bit of snow from the outer cape down towards nantucket. we officially still have a winter storm warning in affect until 7 a.m. for those areas. so just watching out as that moves away over the next hour or so. radar, provincetown clearing out now and even a little bit of sun breaking out. check out your future cast temperatures, 8 in the morning, upper teens, lower 20s from boston to plymouth. low 30s there around nantucket. and as we go into the day today, able to get back here the freezing mark or a little above in many locations as sunshine returns for many of us. there are those snow totals, that fine line lifted north ward. city, a little bit higher than i forecast. either way the cut off line was very sharp as i told you. up to the north where nothing really to deal with. the coastal flood warning is up. and we're going to be watching that potential for the next, say, several hours into early afternoon. and then things will improve and back with much more on that, our team coverage continues right now. >> gene: this video taken as our crews worked their way to sandwich yesterday. yesterday, the snow no longer falling in sandwich. >> heather: fox 25 jim morelli is live there in sandwich as that town begins to dig out. you can tell that they've been plowing the roads all night on your way down there. >> reporter: yeah, on the way down here, the roads were fine. i think the most interesting thing when we left dedham, the temperature on the car thermometer was 19 degrees. by the time we got down here, it was 30. but i got to tell you a wind chill. hour sustained and then gusts higher than that. probably the amazing thing about that is the fact that there were about 1700 power outages here in sandwich as of about 9:00 last night. and this morning, absolutely none reported. and even though the cape had the blunt of it, only about 81 customers without power now in few other towns. i want to show you this graph here on the reference point on the wind. fell. but i think down here where we're on the beach, it got blown boo the parking lot and everywhere else. i, again, find it hard to believe there are no power outages here given how hard it is blowing right now. roads on the cape itself, seem pretty good. obviously there was light traffic, but we saw many plows cleaning up. it should be a fairly quick recovery. but i got to tell you, very uncomfortable out here. live in sandwich, jim morelli, is in scituate this morning well. but flooding is the concern. >> gene: fox 25 stephanie coueignoux is in scituate. she has more on that this morning. >> reporter: gene, flooding certainly an issue we're going to be tracking over the next few hours. right now, though, continues to be the wind. we were here yesterday morning. and taking a look. metal signs. once again, they are just whipping in the wind, and you can actually see they're coated with ice and snow. this entire area, you can see that it's snowing and it snowed here earlier. that has since stopped. but, again, the wind really an issue. and speaking of flooding, take a look. we were showing you this water here yesterday. now, the flooding has been an issue as of yet, but that is something that town officials are keeping a close eye on. earlier i took a look at their are expecting minor to moderate hills. i also checked power outages and within the last 15 minutes ever source was reporting 622 outages this morning. so something we're going to closely monitor again. coming up in 30 minutes. what other towns are doing to storms. and we'll have another live minutes. in scituate, stephanie coueignoux, fox 25 news. >> heather: as stephanie was mentioning, because of the snow and high winds, there are some power outages this morning. but it's clear that crews have been working overnight. we've been watching the numbers night. at last check, national grid is reporting 22 outages this morning. however, ever source reporting a few more, 398. still, that is way down from more than 4,000 which we tracked last night. >> gene: and this morning, airlines are hard at work trying to recover from the storm. more than 10,000 flights across the country were cancelled over airports in philadelphia and washington, d.c. are still trying to dig out after totally stopping operations yesterday. and in had to wait it out on the tarmac. >> heather: a new ban lifted about a few minutes ago at 6:00. the police department telling fox 25 the ban was issued late last night but no cars had be be towed. that didn't stop people from heading out to times square. people were out walking around and having fun with the historic snow there and even blowing snowballs. the blizzard hit the city that never sleeps in totals some areas that were nearly double what was predicted. but very serious situations as this morning, that storm is being blamed for at least 18 deaths in five states. from the carolinas, to new york, tons of people were without power overnight. chris reports from one of the hardest areas, washington, d.c. >> reporter: an epic and slow storm knocked out power for thousands, shut down cities, emptied airports and grounded flights. what's worse, this historic storm has become deadly. killing people from north carolina to new york. >> this is bad and it's getting worse rapidly. >> drivers in several states stranded on the road. trouble. >> this is a historic snowstorm. this is a huge challenge. >> reporter: in pennsylvania, hundreds of cars stranded for 20 hours on the highway. in new jersey, some drivers stuck on the highway for 19 hours. having to decide whether to stay or conserve gas. in new york, the governor imposed a travel ban to parts of the state to encourage people to go inside. >> the situation is getting worse. >> reporter: the city that never sleeps will be a little quieter. all broadway shows cancelled. bridges and tunnels leading into and out of the city are now closed. and enforcing the ban. looking at the blizzard from outer space, you can see just how massive this storm is. and it will continue churning throughout the weekend with more people in its path. in washington, i'm chris welch reporting. >> gene: and take a look at this picture shared by massachusetts state police tweeting this out as a reminder to clear the snow and ice off of your car entirely before you hit the road. this windshield shatter by ice that flew off another car. people in the car were hit with shards of glass and had to be taken to the hospital. >> feeling the wind, the coastal concerns, there goes the lull, the nor'easter finely passing east of us and left over snow flurries still around nantucket. but even those will be wrapping up over the next 30 minutes to an hour. and then we're finished with all of the snow for the rest of the weekend. and really for most of next week. let's look at temperatures. upper teens 8 in the morning. 20s the cape and islands, even some 30s. let's go up to noontime, upper 20s and lower 30s. by 3:00 in the low to mid 30s with a good dose of sunshine returning for your sunday. so enjoy. a shut off point was right there around the lynn area, 2 inches and areas north and west there, just about nothing but of course those foot totals coming in, if not a little more than a foot for the cape and islands. i'll recap those totals coming up. there are those coastal flooding concerns, the beach erosion, also some overwash over the roads, a typically flood prone areas. watch out road closures possible with the high tide cycle coming up. the back to you. >> heather: plenty to talk about. our team coverage does continue, though, in scituate this morning. the flooding concerns remain for the second day. >> gene: fox 25 stephanie coueignoux is there this morning. she's keeping an eye on things for us. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: and town officials also keeping a very close eye on the water levels. right here behind me, it's still a little bit dark but perhaps you can see the waves lapping at the very base of this sea wall right here. so far it's not too bad. but concerns are going to continue to ramp up. so, again, we're going to be monitoring these conditions very closely. meantime, take a look at this. this is some video that we took in plymouth yesterday. and no flooding issues there yesterday. but, again, that is something they're keeping a very close eye on. in fact, plymouth emergency management telling us that taylor avenue there could see some flooding today. now, they also had 150 snowplows on the roads and driving in, we did see a number of snowplows here as well. clearing the roads, really hoping that by removing that snow, that will make it easier and help minimize those flooding conditions later on today. here in scituate, they are expecting minor to moderate flooding. but that's not the only concern. i don't know coming back here live, if you can see my hood kind of blowing in the wind, the wind gusts for a second day in a row, continuing to be very blustery, very high. that has caused some power outages. we're going to give you the latest numbers impact of the storm. the cape and islands got the worse of the whole thing. >> heather: yeah, they did. and jim morelli is braving out about a foot of snow fell and the winds are pretty bad out there this morning, jim. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, heather. i think that absolutely the worst of it. i think the only thing that's making it a little bit bearable is the fact that the temperature is 30 degrees. but of course we have a tremendous wind chill. in fact, the real feel 15. and we're certainly feeling that here. now, the flooding here has been none. we called the police earlier. they had no reports of flooding. they're only expecting minor, possibly some moderate flooding. i've been down to this area before. and generally speaking, when it does flood, you will have waves coming all the way up here into the parking lot that we're in. we have a fair amount of snow here. but i think a lot of it has been blown into the neighborhood in back of us. and we seem to be getting a few flurries in right now. power outages, amazingly none last night 1700. none here in sandwich. there are a handful in barnstable and hyannis, but amazingly enough, the power is still on. so we'll be keeping track of it. once the sun comes up, look at how things are, as far as the snow depth. here it doesn't look too bad on the beach. but, again, a foot to 22 inches fell here in sandwich. jim morelli, fox 25 news. >> gene: because of the snow and high winds, there are some power outages where crews are working overnight. we watched those numbers go down over the course of the evening. national grid is only reporting 2 power outages. ever source reporting 398. that's down from more than 4,000 last night. >> heather: a good reminder, as you dig out, you also want to pay attention to your walkway and driveway, you got to make sure you completely clear off your car as well. take a, look at this picture, this is what could happen. mass. state police showing this yesterday, a windshield shattered with ice flying off the people inside this car we're told were hit by shardz of glass and needed medical attention. it's the latest incident we've reported in event weeks. >> at this video. a local mother tells us, that's her son and the rest of the suffolk university team pushing when their bus got stuck on the side of the road, pushing it out of the snow there. eventually they were able to get going again and they did make it out safely back to boston. glad to hear that. >> this is a fox 25 storm tracker weather alert. >> jason: welcome back, i am just recapping the snow reports, coming from official totals weather watchers across southern new england. check it out. we had more than a foot of snow. east falmouth, 15 inches. 15 inches, nantucket, 11 and a half inches of snow. and then plymouth, about 8 and a half inches, the winter storm warning there. boston and logan, 6 inches of snow. but lynn, 2. that really tells the story. as the crow flies, you're looking at 8 miles from the airport over to lynn. that's the cut off there between winter storm warning and just a few inches of snow. so very fine line. boston coming in a little higher than our forecast yesterday. but overall with that line shifting just north, not reasonable to have that kind of air in a forecast. so this is the picture we got in. 10 inches on the stick. south dartmouth this morning, both waking up snapping a few photos for us. the last of the snow moving east of the cape. and nantucket, a left over flurry or two. still possible here. look at the up close radar, really drying up, snow just collapsing. now we turn our attention to the coastal flood warning that is in affect 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 today, so the north and east facing beaches, even nantucket, road closures we heard from stephanie and jim as well there, still some concerns for that along our coastline, especially for the cape. and winds are going to start subsiding, that will be good news as we see winds gusting 30 something right now. but the good news is that will change and get down below 30 even lower 20s for dueses at 3:00 today. winds out of the northwest, 5 to 15 elsewhere. currently we're in the upper teens to even a few 30s. let's go out to hyannis where it's 31 degrees and we'll see the clouds this morning. but the snow is out of here, in fact, a little bit of sunshine starting to break out and temperatures coming out of the lower 30s into middle 30s at best. around norwood, 19 right now. still some clouds. i do expect a good deem of sun of the upper teens and into the low 30s towards 2:00 this afternoon. there's your boston forecast, 30 to 235. a bright start as the clouds move away and a few clouds returning late in the day ahead of another disturbance. but that one won't bring us much of anything, just a few clouds. there are those areas of highs, most around the freezing mark, if not a little better. there are nose clouds late today and hang around early tomorrow. but then overall, a dry start to your week. tonight. upper teens, lower 20s. a little milder heading to the south and -- seven-day forecast dry on your monday. upper 30s, monday afternoon. look at this warmth, in the 40s on tuesday morning ahead of our next front. so southwest wind warms us up. could see a couple of rain showers but no snow showers. wednesday, leave that extension early. thursday is nice and dry and sunny and quiet. and watch next weekend, models indicating a coastal storm passing well away. that track. >> heather: oh, man. could be another reporter: sure. thank you so much. transition from an active snow event. we go into kind of snow recovery, snow clean up, portion of the program, right. so 495, 93, 95, the pike are all in really good condition. where we continue to see issue is the areas that were hit hardest, the cape, obviously the islands, the new bedford, the so really what we're focused on today is being -- things such as widening the roadways, addressing snow drift on the corners where visibility might be down for both the motorist and the pedestrian. we've been, as you say, without over 2500 pieces of equipment out on the road since yesterday. apparently that number is now down to about 800 and the vast majority is in those -- in the southeastern portion of the state. >> heather: looking at a live picture right now. and it looks like we're seeing a lot of blacktop on the highways. is that true? will it be mostly black as people are driving today? >> exactly right. what we like to say is optimal condition to use a lot of common sense, really make sure that they clean off their vehicles before they get on the roadways. we don't need any flying projectiles, the damaged vehicles behind them. so this is -- we're not too far removed from the snow and train were in an hour. but those folks need to continue to respect that and conduct themselves accordingly and give us the room that we need to do our job. >> heather: i wonder how difficult it was for your crews keeping up last night. you mention the cape and the south shore being hardest hitting areas. were you caught off guard? did you experience any big problems? we're looking at pictures of driving just from this morning, still seeing white in the photos overnight. but were you caught off guard by anything? >> no. i think we're fortunate that we do have a lot of resources at our disposal. for example i don't think a lot of people understand we have over 45 weather stations spread throughout the state. so when conditions begin to without any disrespect to the meteorologists and the media, we don't need to wait for the latest forecast, so we can track the trends and changes in the weather. and then the areas hit the least, ironically you have the that northwest portion of the state which usually gets cloberred by snow. we didn't have any snow out there. it allows us to take those resources, that equipment, personnel, and move it to the areas that need it. as the totals started to creep up, we already planned for that. you guys know, we can have over 4,000 pieces. equipment on the road at any one time. and we have no problem deploying that as needed. >> heather: you did ask people to stay off the roads last night. people out there today, as you mentioned maybe going to pats parties. is there anything you like people to keep in mind, i know you mentioned cleaning off your car being a big issue. >> and you're going to see, especially, again, we saw district 5, which is the cape cod area, new bedford area, fall river, they're still going to just remember not all of these truck drivers -- so if you can't see them, they can't see you. if we're out and about cleaning up, an abundance of caution, give our equipment the room we need to do the job. if you can walk, walk. if you can't, take the t. now would be the day to leave the vehicle where it is. allow us to continue to dig out, especially in those areas hardest hit. and we'll all be back in business later on today and monday morning. >> heather: awesome. great stuff. tom tim lynn from mass. d.o.t. reporting hundreds of equipment still keeping up with this.
