Ted, what can you tell us . Reporter well, we are on the plymouth side of Great Herring Pond and the search is taking place behind me, just a couple hundred yards from the shore here. There are at least five boats in the water right there was a coast guard helicopter circling above. Were working on preliminary reports now that three people took a boat out onto the pond this afternoon and were jumping off the boat to swim into the water. The wind is pretty strong, and theres some good gusts down here. Were told that the wind kept pushing the boat away. Two of the swimmers were able to make it back to the boat. But one was not. And that is the man that theyre looking for, believed plymouth. I spoke with a resident whos been watching the search all afternoon. Heres what he had to say just a few moments ago. Two guys jumped off the boat. One of them went under the water and wasnt able to swim. So they brought the person in the boat decided to toss them life jackets and the person went down, started dragging the other person, and let him go from there. Reporter were back to a live picture now. In the half an hour weve been here, weve seen the search looking at now. All the boats have been in that area. And they have basically been stationary. There are also a number of Emergency Personnel onshore, both on the plymouth and bourne side of this pond. Im told by some of the residents, in some parts of the pond, its 1 00 feet deep and the bottom is grassy and murky, and that may pose a problem for the searchers. Of any recovery at this point. But an ongoing search right now for a missing swimmer here at Great Herring Pond. Reporting live in plymouth, ted daniel, fox 25 news. There is more breaking news tonight. Missing guns, missing drugs, missing cash, and a lot more is gone from the Evidence Room at the Braintree Police department. Just within the past hour, the state released an audit detailing this growing scandal. So far, charges have been dropped in a half dozen local drug c the tip of the iceberg. Robert is live outside the audit. Reporter mark, when this evidence started, there was considerable amounts of evidence missing. They have been able to locate a good portion, but some of it is still missing and tonight hundreds of cases could be at of unaccounted items and poor recordkeeping practices by the Police Department to be deeply troubling. Reporter six criminal cases involving drug charges have already been thrown out, including these two on tuesday and one more today. The audit of the Braintree Police departments Evidence Room shows a considerable amount of evidence unaccounted for, including more than 4 00,000 in crash, 4,700 drug items and guns. The audit was police chief after concerns surfaced. The officer had been assigned to see the Evidence Room from 2013 through midmay of this year, which is the same window of time the audit focused on. Fox 25 news has learned the chief ordered the audit right before she died of selfinflicted injuries. This attorney has a client charged with having drugs but the case is on hold. They may have to look at some of the prior convictions people either pleaded guilty in the face of evidence, that possibly could they lost trials, and may have to try to undo all of that. It really is, in terms of the district attorneys office. We will work closely with michael on this matter. It is his responsibility to determine how well handle these legal cases. Reporter and the mayor also making it clear that when they were doing this audit over the past few months, they found other issues with procedures in that Evidence Room, so its not all tied to the for why they launched this investigation, but the attorney general has also been asked to look into what happened. We are live in braintree, fox 25 news. Updating breaking news in bridgewater where a large fire is burning at a junkyard. There are reports of as many as 30 cars on fire. This is on plymouth street. Smoke can be seen for miles. An issue with gasoline storage tanks may have started this fire. There are no reports of injuries right now. Again, neighbors tell me that cars often go much faster. Now, amazingly, the boy who was struck right here didnt suffer any broken bones, thats what were being told. However, witnesses say this was just absolutely awful. I heard the screaming and the yelling of the of the children and the parents that were out there waiting with their children. Reporter as soon as janet nathan heard the screaming this morning, she ran outside and describes what she saw as absolutely know, lying on the side of the road, not really moving at the moment. He did, a couple minutes later, he did start to moan a little bit. And then he started to cry. Reporter Norfolk Police say a 2yearold boy was walking to this bus stop on grove street with his mother and older brother when he ran out into the road and was struck by a car. Police say he was conscious and alert but was taken by helicopter to tufts medical center. Friends say the family just moved here a few weeks ago. Involved stayed until police arrived, and witnesses say she was distraught. The accident remains under investigation. But neighbors say cars often speed through this area. We set up our camera at this intersection, and while cars slowed down when they saw us, we did see cars speed back up further down the road. I think there should be a speed bump there or i dont know what they can do. People go flying down the street. Reporter jen lehan said bump near Gillette Stadium, and says he is open to adding more, including smaller roads like this one. Speaking for me, i think wed do anything we could to try and protect our folks. Reporter and again, the driver involved did stay on scene. So far, no charges have been filed against her. Two people inside the car had to be pulled out by First Responders. They were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay. This happened before noon today. But even now, some six hours later, only one lane of route 9 eastbound is open. Also tonight, gloucesters police chief is on leave and under investigation and were learning hes not the only one off the beat. New at 6 00, a sergeant is also on paid leave. Reporter theyre not saying whether theyre connected, and also not telling why either was placed on administrative leave, but were learning that the chief of Police Stepping away from the recovery initiative, the nonprofit set up to help his Angel Program that helps drug addicts in our city. We cant arrest our way out of the city. Reporter in april, he was in washington, d. C. , receiving National Recognition for his abusers who turn over their drugs and equipment to treatment, not jail. Tonight, the gloucester chief is off the job pending an internal investigation. Everybodys wondering whats going on. Reporter the sign on the chiefs door thursday read no comment. He told the gloucester times he has no idea what the investigation is about. Saying, quote, i have absolutely no concerns in my personal or professional life that ive done anything wrong to warrant any action against me. If the city feels they have to take some kind of process with this, go at it. Far as the opioid problem that many towns are having. And we just hope it all turns out well for him. I cant imagine what the police chief did. I dont know if its connected with the Angel Program or if its something outside of that. Reporter tonight, the gloucester Police Department confirms another member is on leave. Sergeant sean connors was placed on leave september 8. The Department Said they couldnt comment on personnel matters. The acting chief said, quote, i that the gloucester Police Department is fully operational. The work of the department continues and the safety of all is our mission and numberone concern. City officials said they initiated the investigation into the chiefs actions. The mayor telling the gloucester times they would hire an outside agency to conduct the probe. Chief campanellos attorney sent us a statement saying, in part, it is our understanding that the investigation has nothing to do with his duties as chief of police. We intend to swift conclusion. Students are going back to school tomorrow. So why are we still finding used heroin needles within sight of their School Building . A growing heroin problem is getting way too close to a local Elementary School. Last month, we went out there in brockton and found dirty needles scattered near the school. Today, jason went back to the park and found the problem hasnt gotten much better, and classes start tomorrow. At Barrett Russell elementary go back to school thursday, but their school happens to sit next to a park overrun by heroin users. Its not acceptable for any school to have needles. Reporter last month, we asked the Police Department what they were doing about the problem. We found needles and evidence of heroin use all over that park. Wednesday, before the first day of school, we went back and found nothing had changed. On our own, we found seven needles. While we searched and gathered drove out to see what we were doing. We were told mayor Bill Carpenter will come out and talk to us. Very few needles have been found near the school. We are in an area here that children from that school never to. Were over 2 00 yards. Reporter the mayor says this is a problem concentrated towards the back of the park. However, one of the first needles we found was out in the open along this concrete wall here, a little more than 1 00 yards away from the Elementary School, the parking lot and the you portrayed this as being a play area where 5yearolds are coming out reporter theres a playground right there. I can see it. Right. Thats the limit to how far the children listen, we dont want needles anywhere reporter we showed the officers all that we found, and they picked up 14. City workers picked up the garbage and drug paraphernalia. Is it acceptable to have heroin addicts coming here within disposing of needles within sight of the Elementary School . Youre saying sight, right, sight, because were 250 yards reporter you think the parents will differentiate . No, you keep twisting the questions. Its not acceptable for anyone to come across an improperly discarded needle. Reporter mayor carpenter told us custodians and city every morning once School Starts every day. Selfdriving cars may be making their way down the winding streets of boston. Today, marty walsh announced a program that will use autonomous technology. It will determine if the cars can handle our streets. Walsh says now is the time to get involved with the new technology. Its almost like the phone. People werent quite sure how it works, how do you do this, but eventually became what became what it is today. I think Driverless Cars have that potential. Today, pittsburgh began rolling out selfdriving ubers. The fully automated cars are driving passengers around now. But they have a human sitting in the drivers seat in case something goes wrong. Beautiful day this morning, where we had lots of sunshine temperatures warm to 90 degrees in boston, and it got sticky, all ahead of this cold front thats pushed southward and sparked a few scattered showers and thunderstorms from this afternoon, and now still continuing across the southeastern areas this evening. So taking a closer look, most of the activity is now south of boston. Although, we do have a few sprinkles out there, traveling along 95, portsmouth, nashua, too. A few rain drops. But the threat is decreasing down along the south shore, not the case. Weve seen this shower intensify a bit. We are seeing darker shades of orange and red indicating the steadier, heavier rain pushing through plymouth. Street level through route 3 and 3a. Thats where youll run into steadier rain, as you can see, in shipon road, oak bluff circle, along 3a. If you go further south, youll see cape cod canal. So the rain hasnt hit it and expecting moving pretty fast, 30 to 40 miles per hourment weve got some scattered rain along the south coast as well as for parts of rhode island. There was some Thunder Associated with this shower, but it has really wakened since its hit the water. Well continue to see that trend as we go on through the evening. But the amount of rain really not too much. While we did have some thunderstorms that have the capability to produce up to a up less than a tenth of an inch from this. So we need the rain. We just didnt really get much of it. We do expect to still see some strong wind gusts. But nothing severe. So thats why we havent had any severe thunderstorm warnings, but wind gusts over 20 miles per hour, still likely in boston, report in lawrence about 30. But notice the wind direction in lawrence, out of the north. So drier, cooler air filtering on in. In boston, i mentioned, 90 today. Hey, look at that dew point, over the last hour, its dropped about 10 degrees. So drier air filtering in. Winds out of west will be turning to the northwest. So the storm threat pushing to the southeast right now. Cooler and drier air returns, and were going to be talking about the next chance of rain, looks to be heading our way for the weekend. We have a couple of nice falllike days in the next few days. I say falllike, because look at the temperatures to the north. 50s and 60s. Too. Dew points in the 40s. So overnight, the future cast, i want to take you hour by hour. Were going to see the threat mainly across the south coast, the cape and islands, from 7 00 until about 9 00, drier air working in to the north and west. I mentioned those 50s back through our area overnight tonight. When you wake up, a few 40s at the bus stop. By midday, in the 60s. By the afternoon, well get into the lower 70s away from the coast. It will be a cool day with highs only in the 60s. Of course, were tropics and well talk about that more in the next half hour. The sevenday forecast does feature dry conditions for the next couple of days. The chances of showers and storms return over into monday and tuesday. Its a sign of the times. Standing tall and strong, boston light, americas first lighthouse and the boston keepsake, reveered today on its 300th birthday. [ music ] beyond the pomp and circumstance of the celebration, theres a significance this lighthouse still has. We steps, high above the harbor the light still shines. To the soft hum of the motor that rotates the candlepowered light that can be seen for 27 miles. Still manned and operational today, the only one of its kind in the country. The history of the lighthouse is almost kind of like the history of our city. Reporter boston mayor marty walsh say while rich in history, it should remind city leaders to preserve our history. We look around the city and you know, we dont want to lose that that perspective of how we were founded.
