North andover its a dow Chemical Plant the incident time was the incident time was 2 28 pm this afternoon when First Arriving units found multiple victims of an unknown Chemical Reaction in one of the laboratories of this facility. North Andover Fire Department and area Fire Departments transported for victims to subsequently three of these victims have been transported to boston hospitals. For further treatment. North Andover Fire Department activated regional hazmat system and a tier 3 level which brought approximately 40 hazmat text to the scene. In addition state Police Bomb Squad assigned to the fire marshal is also on scene working concurrently and jointly with the hazmat team and dow chemical personnel. This is an active scene as we speak during this current operational. We are stabilizing the ongoing processes of eliminating any future hazards and will begin an investigation following the secure. It is too early to speak about the cause in addition to North AndoverFire Department mutual Aid Department and the Police Department dep osha fema are on scene and i have made notification to the us federal chemical Safety Bureau in washington d. C. We are aware of another incident that occurred at this facility in october 2013 that incident resulted in a fatality also of a worker of this facility. At this time where the process of a preliminary review of our records from that incident it does not appear to have a connection to the type of incident that we are involved in at this time. As we move forward in this investigation over the next coming days, we will be doing a forensic review of the requirements of dow chemical at this plant in regard to our state fire code and other applicable codes. At this time focused and stabilization. Its also fair to say at this time that no residence and the area no persons outside of that facility are in any danger at this time. I think all that were prepared to say at this point let me back up we have not at this point had direct access to the room in question 11 question so we could analyze a chemical. But the luminary information we have is this was a chemical that was reactive to water. And for some reason that will come out as part of the investigation this chemical reacted with water which resulted in the explosion. Therefore the injuries to the in very brief terms that does appear to be some windows that were broken on the explosion there does appear to be some damage to the lab itself in the way of some protective hoods that have come down from the explosion. Those are prior to the investigation once we get in there that will be able to take a larger look at. But we do believe at this time that the building is stable. The building is not in danger structurally but there is substantial damage to the laboratory itself. I dont know that. Lets see if local authorities know. We believe that the injured were amatory able to make their way to the exits with i dont know the answer to that. We dont know that. Again i cant i dont know. We know what the chemical is. Im not going to talk too much about the chemical at this time its something our hazmat people are looking at but the fact is its because this is in the laboratory making the assumption is a chemical that they use for some type of process. But beyond that we cant say much about it. I believe so. Thats our understanding yes. Thats correct. Again part of the investigation we dont know exactly what happened but the cause of the investigation was coming together of the chemical and water that resulted in a in that laboratory. Know. We know from even able to research very quickly on a preliminary basis our records from our investigation into thousand 13 it was a totally different type of chemical with a different type of operation of result that isnt it. I dont know. When theyre working in the labs they dont necessarily wear protective suits and protective codes but most of the time there inside of a lab with rubber gloves that theyve reach into from the outside. They were protected. Updates but i think its fair to say that they were seriously injured by the fact that theyve been transported for the two boston area hospitals for additional treatment is an indication that these are serious injuries. I would say either way. I dont know. I dont know say again please not to my knowledge. Obviously the probably looking for some baseline medical information that may be held here at the company to help the doctors make the assessments that theyre making but thats there been explosion Chemical Exposure on site there were injuries as well. Those people were able to get to the exits were told with assistance there were ambulatory at the time but since then before taken to lawrence general initially we have subsequently been taken to boston hospitals there listed in serious condition.
