the military has been working for hours to free hundreds of students and teachers inside american university in western kabul. right now, dozens are still trapped. the univsi they are still assessing the situation. the car bomb exploded outside a school for the blind next door, before at least one attacker fired at the university campus from that school building. right now, police aren't sure if there were one or two attackers. officials said a guard who worked at the university had been killed. 18 others were hurt. the u.s. embassy was working to account for you'll of its personnel -- all of its personnel. the u.s. military is advising afghan forces to responded to the gun and bomb attack. the university staff from their car. they still haven't been found. we'll continue to monitor the convicted rapist is accused of striking again, attacking a woman in boston's south end. he used the same plot that he used nine years ago to lure and attack a woman. robert goulston is live in the shock, because he wasn't like that when he was with me. he was such a sweetheart. >> the reporter: this woman, who did not want to be identified, says she's two months pregnant what eduardo rodriguez' baby and is cutting ties with him now, after hearing the charges against him in court today. police say rodriguez picked a woman at random in the south enderle monday morning, her art knife point by the carter playground near northeastern and raped her. he also stole her money police say and phone before running off. rodriguez is convicted of doing the same thing nine years ago, almost the same way. when he approached an 18-year-old girl at the rugles t station again at knife point, forced her to the stairway on tremont street and raped her two times. he served nine years -- eight with a g.p.s. device. he had the g.p.s. device on when he committed the rape. police were able to pinpoint the him because of the g.p.s. unit. >> the time the victim describes she was raped, 1:12 a.m. >> the reporter: and we learned today in court, that he cut off that g.p.s. bracelet about three hours after the crime. we also learned that police have him on surveillance video, walking with the most unresponsive while in the care of a baby-sitter will be laid to rest this week. noah larsen's wake will be held in stoneham tomorrow, followed by a funeral mass in woburn friday. he will be buried privately. investigators are trying to figure out how the 15-month-old was hurt in the first place. children's hospital. >> elizabeth: a nasty crash involving a school bus full of campers, bricking on fox 25 morning news when we reported this happened on cape road in mendon. at 4:00 p.m., we're hearing from someone who ran to the site of the crash to help. fox 25's crystal haynes is live in mendon, where the good news is that all the kids here are ok. >> the reporter: i spoke with april hodge, who is actually a millis teacher and she said she just ran when she saw a school bus was involved in this crash. she also points out to me, i'm going to step out of the way, that actually newly paved and doesn't have lines painted on it and if you drive down the road, the stop sign is hidden by trees lining the street. they were on their way to enjoy the last days of summer, when a bus taking kids to a ymca camp in franklin collided with this black sedan at the intersection off route 140 in arrived. the kids, staffer and bus driver all ok. however, there were not seat belts on the school bus. >> they were crying initially, wanted to know what happened. once they got off the bus, we were charting, they calmed down and wondered how they were going so get to camp. passenger were transported to area hospitals in serious condition. firefighters from surrounding areas used the jaws of life to get him out of the car and then, he was transported by helicopter. now, i spoke with the ymca out of franklin and they tell me about ten kids went on to camp, six picked up by their parents. in a statement, the president of the area y tells me it's unfortunate kids -- it's fortunate rather that the kids weren't our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the accident today and we hope they make a speedy recovery. now, investigators are working to reconstruct this accident, and i put the residents' concerns about this intersection to them. their answers coming up at 5:00 p.m. body cameras starting next month. the officers began training today though as part of a six month trial which begins in september. all 100 were chosen at random after no one volunteered. here's the breakdown of who is wearing them. 87 men, 13 women, 55 white, 29 black, 13 hispanic, and three asian officers. they'll work in five neighborhoods including roxbury and mattapan. we spoke to boston's the water. inlands, it is hot in many places. this is southern new hampshire, hampton falls at 92, but even here at newburyport, 90 degrees. you can bet if you drive to the other side on plum island, you're going to be much cooler, but 90 downtown right now, and off to the west of there, this will take you to nashua, new hampshire, where it's 93, next to our app banner, 93, litchfield, 88. windham video from kokomo, indiana, north of indianapolis. you can see at one point, how huge the tornado is off in the distance. we are seeing reports in twitter that an entire neighborhood near a high school may have been destroyed. no word on injuries, but the damage to build something's widespread there near indianapolis. fox 25 storm tracker chief meteorologist kevin lemanowicz is gathering or data on this and will join us again in a few minutes. >> elizabeth: hard to see after our own recent damage. >> blair: absolute. >> elizabeth: also breaking, at children are among the many victims several large aftershocks. at 5:00 p.m., we head to italy to get reaction from the people who felt that powerful quake. members of the men's basketball team from bryant university are actually in rome right now on an 11-day tour of italy. as fox 25's daniel miller reports, many of them felt the quake in their hotel, including th the destruction hard to look at. rescuers spending hours digging through the hubble of dozens of collapsed buildings, trying to find any survivor after an earthquake in the mountains of central italy. the powerful 6.2 quake hit just after 3:30 a.m. wednesday morning and was felt hundreds of miles away. >> it lasted for about 30, 35 seconds, which is a pretty long time. that's bryant university assistant basketball coach, from rome. he and 23 members of the basketball team were asleep in the hotel when the quake hit. it felt like someone was underneath your bed, shaking it and then the room was like, swaying back-and-forth, so it was an interesting feeling. >> the reporter: burns said he didn't know what was happening, but soon realized something wasn't right. >> there was a panic in the middle of the night especially to be woken up to. got out in the room, checked outside to see what was go once all the shaking stopped, burns says, he and members of his group went down to their hotel lobby to see if things were ok. daniel miller, fox 25 news. >> elizabeth: burns told daniel the team was scheduled to play an exhibition game today about 65-miles near the epicenter quake, but that game is scheduled balls the floor is it cracked. the team is safe and they are scheduled to return to boston fox 25 storm tracker chief meteorologist kevin lemanowicz is tracking some temperatures that will be flirting with 90 degrees out there, kevin. >> kevin: actually hit 90 in a few spots and out in the midwest, they're dealing with something we had to deal with, there's kokomo, indiana, the storm cell right there, had a tornado come through and it looks like now, it's off to the northeast of there. i put the live storm tracker radar from indianapolis on here near marian, indiana, your see the cluster of storms, that really right about in there is where the red and the green are lining up next to each other. something we talked a lot concord on monday. there is still a tornado likely with that storm there, and just north of indianapolis, we've been watching this one curl around, it looks to me like the storm center or the tornado center is near warren, indiana, right along i-70 there, so obviously, not the tornado situation for them. overhead, the reason why this is important to us, outside of the fact that just a human interest and hoping everybody is ok, this is the same storm system, or at least part of it that's going to be affecting us later on this week, so for now, as elizabeth towns have hit 90 degrees. maldin was up to 91 earlier. watertown was 90. now down to 89 degrees. there are some other towns that hit 90. we'll do it again tomorrow. talk about how long the heat will last and still awaiting word from the national hurricane center and the latest on gaston and another storm awaiting a name. >> blair: maybe you're like some people wondering about fast-moving helicopters flying in and around boston. this has been happening all week long. we started looking into what they're doing after getting emails and calls from many of you. some people told us homes are shaking and police are only telling us, this is a training exercise. look closely and listen. you'll receive and hear what some people saw last night before downtown boston. we found this video, posted to youtube, helicopters, one after another, flying near the high rises and not just last night, but all week on twitter, fox 25 addison hoover wrote, lover boston police and marty walsh, but comically low helicopter fly-byes at 10:00 p.m., with no public viewing, not a hot idea. chris also tweeted, is there a helicopter race over boston tonight? the helicopters have been flying all week in and around boston. boston police put out a community advisory, to alert residents about a planned training certificate zoos, in conjunction with the defense department. they stress, it's not in response to any world events. when i for more information, they would only say the specifics are kept mysterious for good reason. fox 25 also found, these black hawk helicopters lined up today on the tarmac at a local airfield. when we asked about the helicopters, fox 25 was directed to the department of defense, who wouldn't comment on the exercise. but at night, it is more like this -- fast flying above neighborhoods and a city that will likely continue for the go on until friday. officials will share more information once it's over, but until then, expect to see more of them flying across various parts of boston. >> elizabeth: more than 1300 errors reported at massachusetts hospitals last year, a 60% increase from the year before. here are the 2015 numbers reported by the department of public health. the wrong surgery was performed on patients 26 times. in 51 cases, medication either killed or yes, mr. mcenroe... see that cord? just plug it into the connector on the right. so you can clearly see what's in and what's out? oh absolutely. r technician see the problem over your smartphone. >> blair: a 9-year-old boy is getting a fresh start at life. he received a double hand the boy's positive attitude will blow you away. his amazing progress. >> story about medicine, a story about hope, a story about belief. and a store about courage. >> the reporter: over the past year, this 9-year-old boy has undergone vigorous rehab at the kennedy krueger institute in baltimore. his brain had to learn how to work with his new hands. >> nothing really changed, because everybody i know is baseball, i can grip on to a bat better. i can wear a baseball glove now. >> the reporter: just a year after surgery, he can do things like write on his journal, make lunch, work a zipper and apparently, snatch cookies. but it has been a journey. >> he said to us, don't ask me, they're my surgeon's hands and later, you hard me to refer to snatching a cookie, and he had walked by one day and taken was, i snatched the cookie with my hand, and it was my hand. >> the reporter: this journey started in 2008. he was only two and developed a life-threatening infection. his hands and the won't tom part of his legs had to be amputated. his kidneys were also damaged, so his mom, patty ray, gave him a kidney. in 2012, they went to philadelphia to talk about prosthetic hands, but the doctors had a different idea -- a hand transplants. in the summer of 2015, they got with a team of 40. since then, it's been a year of therapy. >> it was easy, hard, and fun at the same time. >> the reporter: and even just one year later, the future for zion looks bright. >> the sky is the limit. he's already here, look what he has a year out, so imagine five years from now. i can see anything for this kid, he's amazing. >> blair: what's next for a lot of therapy, but he'll continue to talk his mom into letting him play football. happening right now, following several breaking news stories, including the rising death toll in italy. fox 25 news at 5:00 p.m. starts right now. >> mark: first at 5:00 p.m. tonight, major developments in the shooting death of a suspected terrorist in roslindale. no one from boston police or the f.b.i. will face any charges for good evening everyone, i'm mark ockerbloom. >> elizabeth: i'm elizabeth hopkins in for vanessa welch. rahim was shot in a parking lot after a confrontation. john monahan is there where police say the shooting was justified. >> the reporter: d.a. dan conley flanked by the boston f.b.i. office and the boston police commissioner, released his finding in to the death a cvs on june 2 of 2015. moments later, he was leaving, and if you look very closely at that video, you see a cord hanging from his leg. the d.a. says that cord was part of a longer cord, used to hold a large knife against rahim's leg. that knife, the d.a. says, would later be drawn out on police. rahim had been under federal investigation for several months for a plot to behead a person in new york. then suddenly in conversations and he intended to harm a police officer. fearing he would find many targets at forest hills t-stop if he boarded a bus, police moved into arrest him, they say 18 witnesses backed up their version of this story, and the video you're looking at, while it is not conclusive, the d.a. does say that it corroborates that testimony. here spirit of south carolina what the d.a. says happened as police approached rahim on that rainy morning back on june 2, 2015. >> facing an active, ongoing and continuing threat to himself others, theuw???? boston police detective fired one round at mr. rahim and an f.b.i. agent fired an additional two rounds at him. all three rounds struck mr. rahim, who collapsed with a knife still in his hands. >> rahim was taken to a local hospital where he later died. the d.a. says there are over 700 pages of documents to back up his findings, and also, more than 300 pictures to back up this use of deadly forms.
