>> i'm elizabeth hopkins. thank you for joining us on this veterans day. storm tracker chief meteorologist kevin lemanowicz has latest information on the next storm moving in. tonight it's just drizzle and light showers. here's live doppler radar. you can see it all flight with our live storm tracker radar but here's the thing. they say heavy rain and strong winds that nor'easter is pulling away here's our next issue. this storm system has a little bit of ovth back side of it here. that snow happening into iowa tonight. on the front side severe weather even been tornadoes reported with this system. all pushing east toward new england. we'll have some clouds to start the day but showers start to move in by the middle of the day. continue into the afternoon. now to be clear we won't get the brunt of this you won't get snow and tornadic thunderstorms we definitely have more rain in our forecast. we'll take it hour by hour to show you when the threat arrives tomorrow. this veteran bravely served in afghanistan before losing his life right after he got home. fox 25 covered his shooting death at a home in stoneham two years ago. tomorrow one of the suspects in that veteran's killing finally heads to trial. fox 25's ted daniel joins us live from woburn and you talked to his family tonight, ted? >> yes, we did, mark. he served as a you u.s. army division. he survived multiple fire fights in afghanistan. it was about a year after he left the service when he was killed in his hometown. tomorrow his family plans to show up hire at the middlesex superior courthouse to seek justice for joe. >> first thing i have to identify my son by picture. identify him. >> reporter: there have been a lot of difficult days in this stoneham home and tonight the family is preparing for more to come. >> personally i never thought about it till now, you know. it's like i got to relive all this you stuff again. you guys coming here tonight it's just like tingley and i felt like i was in space. >> reporter: tomorrow the family will come face-to-face with 21-year-old eugene tate of malden who is on trial for murder. on july 3rd, 2013, authorities say tate shot and killed joe, a you u.s. army veteran. >> you you're reliving your whole nightmare. we're reliving a nightmare. you never thought that that could happen to a family. >> reporter: the murder happened in stoneham inside the home of one joe's friends. police say joe was an nrnt party who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time during a drug deal gone bad. >> he got shot through the hand his wrist right through the top of his heart that went into his left lung hit lung. two holes in his lungs a in his wrist and he kept going. >> reporter: they expect as many as 40 family members and friends to attend the trial. you all will be given t-shirts that say justice for joe. >> for some reason this is my son. >> reporter: the jury has already been selected for ugain tate's trial. if a judge allows it the family plans to wear those shirts tomorrow in the courtroom and throughout the trial. reporting live in woburn tonight, ted daniel, fox 25 news. new at 10:00 an infant taken to the hospital after a crash in holliston this afternoon. fox 25 was there as the driver was arrested on drunk driving charges. police say the natick man tried to make an illegal u-turn and hit another car. no word on the child's condition. >> tonight there's growing concern about a group of people riding dirt bikes you through boston. police tell us they've had problems it with in the southend also in dorchester, and in roxbury. fox 25 investigates blair miller reveals why mayor walsh doesn't want police officers chasing these bikes around. >> reporter: for some people their sense of community broken up by this. this youtube video we found shows people on dirt bikes and motorcycles weaving in and out of bottoms streets at high speeds. mark margarita has seen it many times in his southend neighborhood it. >> makes me a little bit nervous walking around when i hear them coming. i see them kind of like weaving in and out of traffic. it seems like a dangerous situation. >> reporter: city leaders worry some people are using the bikes as a quick get away to help commit crime. in 2011 when a 4-year-old was shot at a park in dorchester police said the two suspects fled on dirt bikes. but even if police see one of the bikes on the streets they won't chase after it and not engage it at all instead they have a different plan. >> boston mayor marty walsh also told me today he doesn't want his officers putting anyone in danger. >> it's important to enforce that but we got to be careful, too. these dirt bikes are going through the city of boston i won't put the danger of the police officer and pets that are walking the street in harm's way. >> reporter: police want people who see these bikes being operated recklessly to call them and tell them where they're being stored. >> fox 25 was with boston officers who recently seized seven bikes in mission hills. their answer to a problem some fear is out of hand. >> dangerous. i mean no vehicles can go in there when they're going in a group. >> blair miller, fox 25 news. >> fanduel and draft kings are still legal. consumers can be protected if the sites are run properly. the eventual decision won't be spay swayed in any way by new york's decision to ban the sites. draftkings and fanyou duel are fighting that decision. the fire started just after 4:30 this morning as you can see the fire destroyed a large portion of the inn. the fire department says police removed one person from the building. no word on that person's condition or what started the fire. >> a you lowell man who arrived home as his house was burning may have saved his family members lives. he came home from work to find smoke, his niece, sister and sister's boyfriend were also inside. they had smelled smoke but they thought it was coming from outside. he rushed inside and yelled to them to get out. >> they started off it looked like a small campfire. then it went up. >> nearly all the family belongings were ruined but they say they feel lucky to be alive. you lowell police saying tonight a video game chat led them to arrest this man on drug and assault charges. jose white pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. police got a call from a pennsylvania man saying a lowell woman told him she was being held against her will and assaulted bay gang. police say it was a domestic dispute but they did find marijuana at the apartment. rescue crews reaching pulling to save a local dog from this well. that beloved family pet stuck 25 feet down all night long. our malini basu is here with how it happened. malini? >> reporter: elizabeth, the family says buddy has been doing what he does every day for two years they feed him he goes outside to look for his friends. he knows not to go past an invisible fence line they have no idea how and why he ended up on the street and down in the well. >> reporter: helpless and all alone buddy spent at least 24 hours in a well. the well at least 25 feet deep to youton firefighters didn't even think twice about how -- to youton firefighters didn't even think tonton police didn't think twice about how to help him. >> reporter: buddy and firefighter jared jackson came up safe and sound only a minor scratch on air need initially i felt bad poor they said he was there all night. >> reporter: buddy's owner thinks he disappeared right after a meal. he went outside to look for his friends. >> he was standing on there to see other dogs. i guess it wasn't that stable. >> reporter: buddy was rescued around 8:30 in the morning. family members had no idea where he went until they heard some faint cries. >> we thought we heard him barking but we weren't sure it was so faint because he was probably tired. he was a little shaken probably cold. he was in there you all night. >> reporter: but buddy was back to his normal self in no time. >> the family says this isn't first time it was a close call for the family they say when he was just a couple months old he was hit by a car right in front of their house. he got a hairline father. the family now says they are just glad their little man is back home. for now live in the control room. malini basu, fox 25 news. >> a veteran looking to on veterans day can't do it because it vanished. he realized it was gone in a mall parking lot. plus, a discovery in england decades in the making. the priceless item just uncovered send back to a local teammates are troubling alert about people being lured into an armed roib through on-line dating. one of the neighborhoods where these crimes are happening. >> every single on-line dating site out there is populated with fraudulent scammering cat phishers trying to hurt people. >> reporter: cat phishers have hit boston. boston police now alerting on-line daters six people were robbed observe the course of five weeks after they made contact with an on-line profile. they met on social media or dating website. but police say when they went to meet up at a specific residence they were robbed at begun point. police aren't giving out the address or addresses where it's happening. but on-line security expert robert says you should never meet someone you don't know at a home or anywhere that's not surrounded by people. >> even meeting somebody at a park could possible 10ly dangerous. >> reporter: so what is cat phishing it's when criminals post fake profile pictures of attractive people to lure victims. experts say if a person on-line seems too good to be true they probably are. while cat phishing is a relatively sophisticated scam cat phishers aren't always as sophisticated when it comes to covering their tracks. he says release a good chance police are already hot on their trail. >> more than likely police are investigating e-mails, text messages or phone calls made. they are looking at any communication that might give them insight as to how they can find this person where to locate them even a physical computer i.p. address might be able to help them catch the bad guys. >> reporter: police turned down our request for an interview but mayor marty walsh tells us that the investigation is still very active. >> i know that police are investigating and probably doing some work with other departments as well. >> reporter: as for where you should meet up he says a busy coffee shop is always a good meeting up spot. but he also cautions he says release no such thing as a 100% safe dating website. whether you paid to join it or not. he says that's always a good idea to google someone, look for them on facebook before you up with them. if you can't find any record of them that's a red flag. in mattapan, heather hegedus, fox 25 news. more than a dozen cars were broken into this week. all of those cars were unlocked. everything from money to electronics was taken overnight monday into tuesday. now police believe two people are responsible for these crimes which took place on several streets. just last night police arrested a man accused of trying to break into homes in shrewsbury also in worcester, millbury and sutton. our malini basu talked to a 9-year-old who says she watched the suspect try to get into her garage. if you want to see that this person of interest in an arson investigation. a car was set on fire late monday night near knocks marsh road in dover. surveillance video shows the man in the area when the arson happened. police want to talk to him to see if he knows anything. on thursday a seekonk man accused of stealing roughly $5,000 worth of fund-raising money will be in the court. at 5:00 and 6:00 we first told but accusations against patrick cane. police say cane would cash the checks received then change the date on the checks and deposit them again. here are some pictures of cane depositing the suspected bogus checks in westport. he was taking money from a fund-raiser designed to help hire a constable service. family says he was bullied. tonight our kathryn burcham sat down with his friends about his loss a stunning blow. >> i didn't believe that it was true. >> reporter: junior's life cut too short and his one goal to win a pop warner championship unfulfilled in the wake of his death his old teammates knew what they had to do. >> i would feel ashamed if i didn't take the opportunity to play this season with the kids that i grew up with you because he grew up with and the team that he wanted to win a championship with. >> reporter: back together for one final season the hyde park cowboys are now 8-0. two games away from clenching that national playoff berth. every play they say is inspired by number 42, who may not be on the field but certainly carried in their hearts. >> i just miss him. he was just always there for me. >> reporter: the cowboys did hold an anti-bullying pep unknown soldier in memory of all the fallen servicemen and women buried. there. it is now confirm nine people were killed when the business jet they were in crashed into an ohio apartment building. this was breaking yesterday on you our 5:00 news. officials confirmed today two pilots and seven passengers were on board that 10 seat plane when it clipped utility wires and crashed into the four unit apartment building sparking the fire. luckily no one was home. that plane was scheduled to land at an airport two miles from the crash site. investigators are trying to figure out why the plane clipped those wires but they believe weather was a factor. a student at a different school now arrested and accused of makes racist threats against the university of missouri campus. 19-year-old hunter parks threatened to shoot every black person he sees. officials were quickly able to trace the post to park he was held on $4500 for making a terrorist threat. now it comes aid mid-racial tensions at the university of missouri's flagship campus in columbia. the university systems president and chancellor resigned this week following protests over what protestors call inadequate response to racism on campus. new tonight there are more calls for mizzou professor melissa glick to officially resign from the school. the month month state senator is asking glick to step down following the video that shows her confrontation with a photographer on a public quad during a demonstration. late last night she resigned from her courtesy appointment to missouri's journalism and it's a groundbreaking success behind bars is giving hope to those living on the outside. >> i feel alive. >> reporter: alive because of this drug. he didn't want to show his face because of everything he's overcome and how it's immaterial pacted his family. but this man spent nearly a year at the barnstable county facility because of opioid drug abuse. as he got closer to getting out he was terrified. >> why were you terrified? >> because i knew i was going on to the street and i had no foundation to stay clean. >> reporter: the jail gave him an injection that fights drug addiction it. >> took all the cravings away. which i couldn't believe. >> reporter: barnstable county sheriff james cummings says the revolving door of inmates is largely due to addiction issues. >> when we first ask inmates when they were coming into the jail if they felt they were addicted to opioids 43% said yes. >> reporter: that was three years ago when the sheriff decided to give a shot at recovery to heroin addicts right before releasing them from jail. the shot lasts for a month. the first one is listen here and the rest at a community treatment facility after the inmate is released. >> 170 plus inmates that we treated only 9% have returned to jail and that's quite a significant number when the national average of people who return is 70%. >> reporter: jails across the country call weekly asking about it. here we met you rauol who has been in and out of jail since he was 12. >> i'm a heroin user, i have been akicked to opiates since i was young. >> you how long? >> 17 years old, sir. out in march and eager to take vivtrol hoping for a normal life. >> if i didn't have that i sir. >> reporter: a harsh reality to jess cat the facility's medical director. she says it's a win-win for the community because drug maker here in massachusetts pays for the first $1,000 shot and insurance handles the rest. >> if you actual lie look at the root of the problem which is the addiction and treat that then we're not going to be having people the same level. safer. >> reporter: as for the man who once feared leaving jail still clean. >> where do you think you would be today if not for this program? >> i would probably be on the other side of these walls i would say. >> reporter: jail officials wish this is something that could be used in the outside world but it's much harder storm tracker weather team. >> not done with this one just yet. still showers out there drizzle a lot of clouds. that nor'easter pulling away and taking the strong winds it with. not much to see on live doppler radar. rays of beam shooting up to a lot of the lower drizzle that's there. when you shoot the beam really low you can find. that here's what we're looking at. down here through forest and seeing some more organized showers a little bit more than drizzle happening in those spots right now we can pinpoint it with live storm tracker. off to the northwest of there a few more of these spots. there's holliston, east to douglas over to oxford and leicester just spots of more organized shower activity for now. in places like cohasset this one has a little darker green it's still a little heavier shower it's just not coming down real hard onto rocklin street and along 228 in the town of cohasset. that's by the right now. drizzle is the main idea this evening. that's our storm system pulling away rapidly at aing the strong winds it with. had wind gusts as high as 51 miles per hour. the advisories are now gone. check out this storm in the midwest. this is a beast. closer inspection you can clearly see the swirl in this as it becomes a mature storm. almost to the the dying stage. now on the back side of it here check this out. that is snow falling right now. in fact i talked to a colleague out here in sioux city, iowa she says that the cold air came in very rapidly and changed this over to snow on a day where there was also tornadoes. on this side of the storm system that's where the thunder is happening thunderstorms and severe weather. this whole system is pushing our way. here's the good news. there's the middle of it and it's headed towards canada but dragging this on you through us. what's it mean for you our forecast tomorrow. overnight tonight your temperature also stay about where they are dropping a few degrees out for new worcester it will stay cloudy and drizzly even a touch of fog in some of these the spots as well. take you out to boston. notice, mostly if not totally cloudy right through the morning. might catch a glimpse of sun tomorrow morning that's about it. finally to hyannis clouds, fog in the morning temperature dropping to the upper 40s that's about where it is now. this is what your winds are doing now. not much happening here. they're blowing from the north not gusting strong like they are out here. now here comes the next one. we have the clouds starting at having tomorrow morning we're seeing the showers move through central massachusetts into worcester county. these lift into boston during your lunch hour tomorrow. not everyone is getting a shower but the threat is certainly there. these continue to pick up in intensity through the afternoon. there will be some heavier downpours not everyone getting up at the same time as you can see. it's showers it's not a big wall of rain coming on in. but this is the tail end of that storm system as it pushes into canada. so we're avoiding the main part of this we're definitely getting some rainshowers right through the afternoon into evening drive tomorrow. morning drive is drizzly and foggy and cloudy but not the heavy downpours. clear it out tomorrow night start the day on friday with some sunshine. that's certainly some good news. high temperatures tomorrow be about where they should be for this time of year. generally in the 50s just about everywhere you look. upper frois low 50s. here's the seven-day forecast. 53 on average tomorrow with the showers more prevalent in the afternoon. then on friday a little bit of sun and temperature right around 55 . tomorrow you will get some rain and get some fog. these are your weather the flag from the back of a veteran's truck. >> someone actually pulled it down and ripped it off. >> reporter: john lewis, a navy veteran, is talking about the american flag he proudly flew from his pickup for the last five months. >> it was secured pretty well back here. >> reporter: while john was shopping inside the southshore mall in braintree someone went to great trouble to rip off john's flag. >> the whole metal was ripped off and bent. >> reporter: no easy task according to john. people shopping nearby tonight are in disbelief. >> that's terrible. poor guy. especially on a day like today. >> we're supposed to be celebrating veterans day not having any respect for someone's property and their flag itself it's just not right at all. >> reporter: john's own son, brought to tears. >> it's important to honor my country and don't want anything to happen it to. >> reporter: john is proud vet and can't understand why anyone did this, especially today. >> any other day i wouldn't say i wouldn't mind but i wouldn't be as moved by it. but today of all days to rip off an american flag. >> reporter: we have developing news on this. in the last hour we received an e-mail from a man who found a flag on the road not far from the mall. the two men have connected on our fox 25 news facebook page. we've helped the two men to get in touch and hope to be there if this is john's flag when he does get it back. we'll certainly keep you posted. a recovery by pittsfield police today. these two bronze cemetery markers belonged to veterans. a scrap yard employee called police when they were turned in as scrap metal. offers are investigating and they believe they were in fact stolen. investigation into how the government is using cell phone tracking equipment. they want to know if they use stingrays which act like cell phone you towers. the committee also wants to know how agencies are using stingrays how much money has been spent on the technology. and what are the policies governing their use. we don't know what they're being used for. what the full capability of these devices are. so it's not necessarily the device itself that's so scary, it's the secrecy surrounding it. >> the lawmakers requested briefings with the agencies next week. only on fox 25 tonight a veterans day surprise leaving a local widow shocked and it wouldn't have happened without a man's discovery in england. >> the widow's husband fought for our country in world war two. fox 25's bob ward with a story that had the the woman thinking it could have been too good to be true. >> reporter: at first gary didn't know what his metal detector found that day in a park in plymouth, england but he knew this was unique. gary found it in place called davenport park an area steeped in naval military history. gary talked to me over the phone from england. >> literally jumped out. >> reporter: once cleaned up the item gary found this was a dog tag bearing the name robert edmund maloney. using facebook and an american contact, gary discovered the dog tag belonged to this man, rob marty loney of lowell. in 1944, maloney was a sailor on board the u.s.s. arcan stationed in plymouth england. >> i think he lost that dog tag in a plymouth park in 1944. >> he came to december in december of 1943 and the ship stayed there until early 1944. word thrernt's dog tag was found in plymouth england came as news to rob erpt's widow. -- robert's widow. >> it made me realize is this real or just a joke. >> reporter: stella maloney is 91 now she lost robert 10 years ago. stella
