officials tell us the child made threats of violence sometime over the weekend. the threats we're told were directed towards the pembroke community middle school. we just got word of this within the last half an hour. in that time we contacted the interim superintendent of schools. she will not confirm whether this student is male or female, we do know police are investigating this situation. the superintendent telling us the student is not suspended at this time. we're continuing to make calls and we'll update you as soon as we have more information. i'm ted daniel, fox 25 news. armed with a knife, a suspect storms into a local store demanding money but he left within seconds when he discovered that the clerk had a weapon of her own. new at 10:00 tonight we're hearing that that clerk who scared off that suspect had a very big knife with her. fox 25's malini basu is live in manchester, new hampshire with why it was so important for her to stand up for herself. malini? >> reporter: you could say that again. tired and fed up. the mother of four says she works 14 hours a day right here at her store. also to raise her four children and she says tonight she was not going to allow anyone to take away from her. >> reporter: it was a quiet saturday night down the block grocery store on hanover street in manchester, new hampshire. all of a sudden the store clerk dawn was forced to fend this man off. >> when he came in he just ran to the counter and put his hands on there and showed me the knife. i was like really. so i just looked at him smiled then pulled out my knife and showed him and he just looked at me double take and i pointed it with him and he left. >> reporter: with a hoodie and ban danda covering his face. me the money. >> reporter: the mother of four got this knife months ago as an early birthday present. in her 17 years she tells happened to her. >> don't do it. go get a job. simple as that not my fault i chose mine i work, do something about your life. >> reporter: and tonight dawn tells fox 25 he has a -- she has a daughter in college and saving all the money she can for them. so description here we have of the suspect is a white male he's about 5'4" hampshire tonight. malini basu, fox 25 news. an eight month-old baby on life support a toddler in the hospital tonight one woman is killed after a car and cement truck slam into each other. fox 25's jim morelli is live in oxford with what we have reached about this. jim? >> reporter: mark, in back of us is route 20 there's no sign of the calamity that struck here this morning a horrific crash as you can we have a cross certainly not the first crash that's road. this morning one woman young woman dead and two children terribly injured. >> it's just a very bad corner. >> deadly. this road is deadly. >> but this one is the worst. seen. >> reporter: about 8:30 this morning a collision on route 20 in oxford on a corner curve. >> it's like dynamite. >> reporter: that earthshaking crash the result of a car hitting a surface large and unforgiving a cement truck and the consequences heartbreaking. a 31-year-old woman from sturbridge dead, an eight month-old on life support, and a 2-year-old severely injured. >> i look up the road it's gut-wrenching. >> reporter: state police say the car a chevy cavalier triggered the accident by drifting from the eastbound lane into the west. it collided with a cement truck spun back into oncoming traffic and was struck by an s.u.v. laying on its side no axle a real bad. >> reporter: state police tell fox 25 this part of route 20 is an area where "historically very bad crashes occur." >> we have seen so many accidents here it isn't funny. >> reporter: for nine plus hours route 20 remain closed to traffic but around 7:00 it reopened in a rush of determination to get somewhere things got back to curve. after a day locals will have a hard time forgetting. we have not received an update on the condition of time. the last time was around 4:00 this afternoon. again, last we heard the eight month-old was on life support and that the 2-year-old had severe injuries both of them were at u-mass medical center. in addition three others were injured in a nonlife-threatening way, including two people in that s.u.v. and the cement truck driver. at 11:00, we will hear what the cement truck driver had to say just after the crash. fox 25. >> have you ever seen this carrier before? >> no. >> reporter: the mail carrier 40-year-old edmund haggerty from whitman was arraigned today on operating to endanger and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, that weapon being his mail truck. it happened sunday night according to witnesses he was speeding through this weymouth neighborhood while delivering packages. >> because of the bump in the road you could tell that he was speeding. when he came down he was revving he came down and amy conlin my neighbor stood out front so he couldn't go any further. >> reporter: according to this police report conlin went out to the street to tell hagger to the slow down they got in a fight and haggerty began to speed up and moved the mail truck very close to her and hit the gas striking her in the knees and pushing her back. he then ran through people's backyards. police caught up with him and also found a 25 ounce can of beer in a cooler in his mail truck. mr. haggerty didn't come to the door shortly after being released from court. but he told police yesterday in his defense he had been feeling stressed about his work load. hag lert now be back in court in december. have a criminal record. the post says says he has only been working since august and since then had now. the post office is now conducting their own police. reporting in weymouth, heather news at 5:00 and 6:00 when we told you that they were arrested in pennsylvania. they were wanted for bank robberies stretching from mass to palm coast, florida to maryland and delaware. ted daniel has jennifer carrier will likely be prosecuted in federal court where each bank robbery carries 25 years. the couple, me call bonnie and clyde had a lucrative run but their run ended today. a high-profile couple from massachusetts in a high-speed chase. the fox station in pennsylvania flew over i-95 near the filly airport where joseph and jennifer carrier were captured this afternoon. the married couple is suspected of pulling off five bank robberies up and down the east coast. the first one happened a month ago in the western mass town of ludlow, ludlow police detective lewis has been trying carrier running out of a citizens bank in wilmington. >> they failed to stop delaware state police pursued them into pennsylvania where pennsylvania state police intercepted the chase and brought the vehicle to a halt. they did damage to cruisers in the process. >> reporter: police say the carriers have ties to western mass and the south shore. before the crime spree began, police tell fox 25 the couple was living with one of jennifer's relatives at this home in quincy. sir. we tried last week and again tonight a few hours after we learned of the arrest. the only comment remains no when we first told you about the couple last week we told you they were traveling with seven dogs, including five puppies. tonight police tell me that the dogs were with them in the s.u.v. when they were tonight for a mission lowell woman suffering from mental challenges. police say 67-year-old elga was last seen walking near her home on tulip lane. she's described as a hispanic woman with dark hair wearing a gray sweater and black and white pants. the family is worried because she has the mind of an 8-year-old and is diabetic. if you see her contact police immediately. new video showing the aftermath of a raid on an isis prison in iraq that left one american soldier dead. new at 10:00, video shows isis held prisoners running for their lives of being kurdish joint raid. troops can be seen along kurdish commandos checking hostages for weapons or suicide vests. the raid was the first time u.s. forces have directly engaged isis fighters on the ground in iraq. u.s. master sergeant joshua wheeler was killed in that battle. gas leak in uxbridge forces several buildings to be evacuated today it happened this morning on north main street. fire officials say crews were working on a water main project that struck a gas line that resulted in a small gas leak. she shut off the gas line everyone and was allowed back inside about 20 minutes later. also new tonight an excavater tips over in millbury the operator was working at a building degree -- being demonthly i wered. the operator was trapped inside but was able to get himself out. police want you to help you track down a suspect in a credit card theft. they tell us that the woman that you see here and another man racked up nearly $7,000 in charges before the victim could cancel her credit card. police say the cards are often stolen while victims are eating at local restaurants so it's a good idea to keep your purse in front of you or within view. there are questions tonight about whether the mbta should be making money off draft king ads when the state has still not decided to regulate that city. fox 25 said the ads all over south station. this week the gaming commission is meeting to talk about whether sites like the school. >> reporter: a heart-wrenching day at malden catholic high school as news reaches students about the sunday night death of senior alex. alex was driving his car in peabody and crashed into a utility pole on forest street at about 9:30 p.m. foch. >> everything goes a little slower and a it was a tough day. >> reporter: the headmaster tells me the death of alex was announced in the morning and the news left the entire school stunned. >> it's a tremendous loss and not just for 17, 18-year-olds for all of us for the adults in the building. i had teachers in tears when we announced that. it's just that hard. >> reporter: in peabody on forest street workers repaired the utility pole that he hit. he was driving north on forest just feet away from the southbound lane of route 128. only the pole stopped his car from crashing through a chain link fence and into oncoming traffic. police here are trying to figure out how this accident happened. this is a straight stretch of road. big storm that came through mexico over the weekend made landfall friday night when i was talking to you and continues through the deep south during this week. this is pointed right at new england. it's going to bring some heavy rain on in here. looking like wednesday night into early thursday morning is when we'll get our heaviest rain to come on through. something we'll be tracking very closely be aware that's in our forecast. the seven-day forecast will show that with the heavy rain coming in on wednesday night into thursday. along with some mild air, by the way, we'll clear it out for friday right now halloween is looking fine. we turn back the clocks one hour in the middle of this upcoming weekend. former high school athletic director is facing theft charges. new at 10:00 he kept his school issued laptop after he was fired. this morning he was arrested at his home in wayland. fox 25's kathryn burcham is live in wayland and you spoke with him exclusively about the charges. krirn? >> reporter: -- kathryn? >> reporter: district officials are calling this an unfortunate incident that they want to put behind them. but for stephen cass who faced a judge here in court this afternoon it's a continuation of what he calls persecution from school officials. >> incredibly frustrating. >> reporter: stephen cass sits stunned in the framingham district court after he was handcuffed just hours earlier. >> i'm shocked to be here today. i'm sad,. >> reporter: police were there they say to search for a laptop that wayland school officials say cass illegally kept after he was let go from his position as high school athletic director. in a statement superintendent paul stein told fox 25 cass reported that he had returned his school department issued computer and an assertion which we took at his word. but later concluded that this computer was in fact missing. cass says all the school had to do was call. >> they never asked for it back. they never asked me to pay for it. they gave it to me. >> reporter: during his two year tenure at wayland high cass claims he discovered and exposed widespread problems in the sports program, including misused funds and title 9 discrimination. three days after cass shared the information with the superintendent he was told his contract wasn't being renewed. state officials are now investigating cass' allegations. and cass says he believes his arrest was just part of the district's witch-hunt against him. >> i've done so much good for the people of wayland over the last two years to be persecuted for doing the right thing. it's pretty painful. >> reporter: the superintendent told me that the only motivation for filing a criminal complaint was "to recover the computer" cass will be back here for a probable approaching 300 tonight. officials say 12 teenage girls are among those killed after they were trample while trying to evacuate their schools. u.s. geological survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.5 and centered near the pakistan border. it's uncleared if any of those killed were american soldiers. canadian investigators are now searching for the cause of a deadly whale watching boat accident off the coast of british columbia. five people were killed one person is still missing. 21 people were still missing after boat capsized. the owner says his team is investigators. there is a push to the mud and a walpole towing company charged him nearly $50,000 to get it out. the owner says the job placed his men in dangerous conditions for hours. fox 25's kerry kavanaugh reports from walpole with the itemized bill that breaks it all down. >> i got stuck. >> reporter: stuck in several feet of mud and stuck with a big bill to tow it out. >> when i went to pick up the vehicle from assured collision he had informed me that there was some damage done to the vehicle but didn't really get into detail. also informed me that the bill was $48,000. >> reporter: here's where joel's story begins. he and his girlfriend took his jeep off roading in walpole last week when he landed in this mud pit walpole police responded along with assured collision to tow them out. he says he was unknowingly off roading on private property belonging to a utility company. in addition to getting stuck he got arrested but he says the situation only got worse. >> the frame is broken, leaf spring is broken and drive shaft is broken. >> reporter: he believes his jeep is now totalled after the mud pit and the tow. now the bill just for that tow is more than $48,000. what did you think when you got that price tag? >> i thought they made a mistake. >> reporter: he obtained the itemized bill submitted to his insurance assured collision billed him $16,000 for an on scene supervisor at $1250 an hour. an off road recovery incident response unit at more than $10,000. dangerous condition liability insurance, $5,000. all the equipment and manpower totalled $48,835 for the 12 hour job. the owner of assured collision was unable to speak with fox 25 on camera monday. he told us over the phone his seven man team was in dangerous conditions due to the proximity to power lines. he says this was a haz-mat situation and that all the fees reflect the industry standard. >> for once almost $50,000 i think that's crazy. >> reporter: so assured collision says they're negotiating with the insurance company for the price of that tow. they also believe the jeep had several issues long before they ever encountered it out in the woods. he said his insurance company unit is paying a dime for the tow cancer, too. >> the evidence is very strong. if you eat 50 grams of processed meat which is just a little bit less than your risk increases by 18%. >> reporter: the international agency for research or i.r. lists processed meats in the same danger category as smoking or asbestos. though that does not mean cigarettes. >> meat industry groups are blasting the report calling dramatic. they're mocking the panel's previous work classifying things such as coffee, sunlight and wine as potential search hazards. >> if we rely simply on i.r.'s list it would become clear that just living on this plan it is a cancer hazard. >> reporter: the meat industry argues cancer is a complex disease. caused not just by food but lifestyle and environmental factors. doctors have long stressed the latest on what we've learned. >> ted? >> we first learned of this situation shortly after our 10:00 newscast. we have been able to confirm that police are investigating a middle school student in connection to violent threats made sometime over the weekend. the threats were directed towards the pembroke community middle school. there are more than 500 students at pembroke community middle in the seventh and eighth grades. the intern superintendent will not confirm whether the student is male or female. at this point she's not revealing the circumstances surrounding the threat. the superintendent did tell us this student is not suspended at this time. we're following the developments and we'll provide any upkits that we get on fox 25 morning news starting at 4:00 a.m. nor now
