lim nakrin. we first brought you this story as breaking news during our news at 6:00, and new tonight those close to the incident are ritchie. >> reporter: i spoke with a woman who says her mom was in the car on balch street that the suspect was ramming. friend. and from that car came the 911 call that triggered a deadly chain of events. >> got a phone call from my mom that he was shot by police. >> reporter: the call came from balch street in beverly just after 3:00 this afternoon, reporting an incident involving a suicidal man and the toyota s.u.v. she was in with her friend, who she identifies as the man's wife. >> my mom was just trying to do the right thing. i don't know, something us in have snapped. >> the individual struck the toyota highlander on two occasions, then backed up, struck a beverly police cruiser, moved forward again, struck a second police cruiser, and the officer got out of the car, ordered him to stop. he did not. one shot was fire through the driver's side window, hitting the driver in the shoulder. >> reporter: that driver was a 49-year-old hamilton man. he was immediately given medical attention by the officers on the scene until an ambulance could get him to the hospital. but his injuries were too severe and he died a short time later. that added a new dimension to this investigation and already has some questioning if lethal force was necessary. so i asked the chief. chief, is this protocol for a responding officer to order him more than once to get out of the vehicle? >> these are things that are still under investigation. it's an ongoing incident, and this vehicle had already struck one vehicle twice, struck two cruisers with the officers occupied in those cruisers, and the incident was continuing. >> i'm really glad that my mom and her weren't hurt. >> reporter: police are not releasing the name of the man who died at this hour, nor are they telling us who the officer is who discharged that firearm, only telling us the officer is a veteran of the beverly police department, and right now on administrative leave. in beverly, erika ritchie, fox 25 news. >> anchor: breaking now in quincy, firefighters take control of a massive fire burning at a home on film lips street. a witness sent us this video of huge flames shooting out of the third story window. flames have turned to smoke, as crews doused that home. right now no injuries have been reported. we are working to get you more information from that scene throughout the newscast. also tonight a huge blast, massive flames leading to total devastation in franklin. an explosion at a condo there killed a husband and wife inside. this is a story we've been following all day long here at fox 25, and tonight our robert goldfinn tells us that couple had just moved back to this area. >> it was extremely loud. >> we sat right up in bed, it was so loud. >> reporter: what is typically a quiet neighborhood on tuscany drive in franklin -- >> just black smoke and flames. >> stuff coming down from the sky. >> reporter: turned into a raging fire after one neighbor's home exploded. >> the building was just totally engulfed within minutes. >> reporter: hours later after firefighters got the fire under everyone feared, a husband and wife did not make it out. >> we've just come across two victims of the fire, they were found by state police investigators. >> reporter: nancy and richard brown, both 66 years old, were found together in the debris of the first floor master bedroom. >> you can't hardly tell there was a house there. it's just the foundation left. >> reporter: the browns just moved in weeks ago to the a55-year-old and up condo community. according to neighbors they relocated from florida to be closer to their grandchildren. >> they walked every morning. just nice grandparents. >> reporter: verdicts are now trying to figure out what caused the blast. the condo union vits propane heat with storage tanks underground. the other two units in the building were unoccupanted. the browns' closest neighbors are still shaken up and don't know if they're going to stay at their home tonight. >> i don't know. i haven't decided. probably not. just till we're sure that everything is okay. marshal told us he ordered the propane company that does the work here at this community to do random inspections on the propane tanks. in flames pouring from this home in jamaica plain today. this fire broke out this afternoon at a two-family home on dunkster road. no one was home at the time. fire officials say the home suffered extensive damage, but luckily firefighters were able to knock it down before it spread to other homes nearby. >> with with these type fires in boston the houses are so close that it's the radiant heat, if you hold your hand next to a candle you can feel the heat. and if the fire is big enough, it will get the siding going. but they were able to knock it down quickly. >> anchor: two people were displaced, the cause is under investigation. take a look at this crime tape in a parking lot in weymouth today where a man was hit by a car, near a food festival. firefighter tell us the victim was not conscious when emergency workers arrived, but did later regain consciousness and he was flown to brigham and women's hospital in serious condition. police say the driver of that cars. that driver is a 46-year-old weymouth man, now fating several counts of o.u.i. weather wise we're off to a pretty good start this holiday weekend, a lot of sunshine today. however, it is a little bit chilly the hard way to be sure they're prepared. the herald is reporting that a family was hiking in stark, new hampshire wednesday, lost their way. so they called 911, crews rushed to the scene and thankfully were able to help them back to their car. but official says this could have been a lot worse and that the family should have had a hike safe card and also recreation al licenses. in newton, there have been no more reported bear sightings ever since the one last night. we first told but the animal being spotted in the rose street area on our fox 25 news at 10:00 last night. police found that bear asleep, and they called in environmental police. eventually the bear did wake up. this is the time of year when bears are stocking up on food. so newton police say if you do spot this or another bear again, call. temperature tonight a man is under arrest for reckless driving on a busy highway. police spotted 70-year-old man speeding on 93 in canterbury, new hampshire this morning. troopers eventually had to use spike strips to dethat it his tires to get him to stop, but he refused to get out of his car. eventually police did catch up with him, they it him under arrest and he's due in court on monday. to the cape now where police are working to track down a suspect in a string of break-ins. a resident capture these surveillance photos after a recent incident in orleans. police say there have been three separate break-ins within the last 10 days, all in the area of route 39 near cross road there. if you know anything, call orleans police. tonight in lowell, the community came together to support a high school student targeted in racist texts. they want to raise awareness so that this never happens again. he remembers the elation of being elected class announcing an officer has been placed on leave after he was apparently caught sleeping on duty. take a look at this photo from the lowell sun, showing that officer with his head down on a pillow, inside of a patrol car. the departments internal affairs is now investigating. tonight lowell superintendent of police saying that in part while this case is extremely embarrassing, it is not representative of the hard working and dedicated men and he goes onto say that behavior will not be tolerated. meanwhile, fire officials working to figure out what sparked this fire in fitchburg. flames broke out at this three-story home on henry street today. thankfully everyone inside was able to get out safely, but 10 people have been displaced. assisting them. and take a look at this video, taken within moments of a sex assault reported in dorchester. someone seen running out of the frame there. as fox 25's john monahan explains, that's not the only piece of video police are looking at tonight. >> police are looking for the public's help trying to i.d. a person of interest. looking for a man connected to a sexual assault, there's plenty of pictures and video to go through, police just want the public's help to i.d. him. take a close look at this surveillance video, it shows a robber at work, the man in a red shirt and khakis, wax up to two men, grabs one, then the other. police say he threatened to stab them unless he gave them money. this happened four times in dorchester on september 27th, in the area of did itson, leroy and ridgewood streets. but it didn't end there. >> i think it's very scary. >> reporter: she's talking about a sexual assault an hour later and a mile away. near harbor view in dorchester avenue. >> seems like people just commit these crimes and have no second thought about doing it. >> reporter: fox 25 has learned this also involved a knife and robbery, but this included a sexual assault. police looking to question a similar looking man from the earlier robberies, a plaque male in his 20s, about five ten to six two is caught again on surveillance video. he is seen running towards sidney street, but this time he's caught on five different by, running by, running toward, and then running past this time from above. police want people to take a good look at this guy. appearance. he has two braids in his hair. police also believe he may have s.u.v. neighbors hope all the video will help to catch him. >> of course, yeah, i'm hopeful that we'll aid in getting the guy and get him off the street. >> reporter: in the fox 25 news. also tonight a road in wellesley is open once again, after this rollover crash. police say one person who h to be pulled from that car but the extent of the injuries are still not clear officials are still investigating what caused that crash. new hampshire authorities meanwhile are asking the public for any information about a man charged with sexually assaulting students. according to the concord monitor, the sheriff is trying to figure out if 30 used donald levesque assaulted any other victims out there. we told you earlier that he was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting several students including a 14-year-old boy. comedian bill cosby, meanwhile, deposed by a lawyer representing one of his alleged victims of sex assault. she says cosby sexually assaulted her in the 1970s at the playboy mansion when she was just 15 years old. her attorney says a judge will have until december to review the material and determine if anything cosby said will be made public. over the past several months numerous women have accused the course of several decades. sergeant bowe bergdahl could be spared time in jail, that's the recommendation of an army officer who said bergdahl should be given a lower level court martial instead. he was charged with desertion after leaving his post in afghanistan and being captured by the taliban in 2009. last year the u.s. released several taliban prisoners in exchange for his freedom. schools across our country are reevaluating security plans in the wake of several recent college shootings. massachusetts higher education commissioner santiago recently sat down with the associated press for an interview, and he says there are man's in place not only for active shooters here but also for mere threats as well. if you want to read northern arizona university has now been released from the hospital. it comes after a candle-light vigil on campus just last night. police say 18-year-old freshman steven jones shot and killed one student early friday morning and also injured three others. all of the victims belonged to the delta kia fraternity. jones is being held on $2 million bail tonight. in texas police have identified the student killed in a shooting at texas southern university. 18-year-old brett randall was shot outside of a student housing complex yesterday and he died on the way to the hospital. another student was also hurt in this. police detained two people after the shooting, but it's still not clear if they are actual suspects. this was the third shooting on or near that campus just this week. coming up the lim nakrin. we first brought you this story as breaking news during our news at 6:00, and new tonight those close to the incident are ritchie. >> reporter: i spoke with a woman who says her mom was in the car on balch street that the suspect was ramming. friend. and from that car came the 911 call that triggered a deadly chain of events. >> got a phone call from my mom that he was shot by police. >> reporter: the call came from balch street in beverly just after 3:00 this afternoon, reporting an incident involving a suicidal man and the toyota s.u.v. she was in with her friend, who she identifies as the man's wife. >> my mom was just trying to do the right thing. i don't know, something us in have snapped. >> the individual struck the toyota highlander on two occasions, then backed up, struck a beverly police cruiser, moved forward again, struck a second police cruiser, and the officer got out of the car, ordered him to stop. he did not. one shot was fire through the driver's side window, hitting the driver in the shoulder. >> reporter: that driver was a 49-year-old hamilton man. he was immediately given medical attention by the officers on the scene until an ambulance could get him to the hospital. but his injuries were too severe and he died a short time later. that added a new dimension to this investigation and already has some questioning if lethal force was necessary. so i asked the chief. chief, is this protocol for a responding officer to order him more than once to get out of the vehicle? >> these are things that are still under investigation. it's an ongoing incident, and this vehicle had already struck one vehicle twice, struck two cruisers with the officers occupied in those cruisers, and the incident was continuing. >> i'm really glad that my mom and her weren't hurt. >> reporter: police are not releasing the name of the man who died at this hour, nor are they telling us who the officer is who discharged that firearm, only telling us the massive fire burning at a home on film lips street. a witness sent us this video of huge flames shooting out of the third story window. flames have turned to smoke, as crews doused that home. right franklin. an explosion at a condo there killed a husband and wife inside. this is a story we've been following all day long here at fox 25, and tonight our robert goldfinn tells us that couple had hours later after firefighters got the fire under everyone feared, a husband and wife did not make it out. >> we've just come across two victims of the fire, they were found by state police the foundation left. >> reporter: the browns just moved in weeks ago to the a55-year-old and up condo community. according to neighbors they relocated from florida to be closer to their grandchildren. flames pouring from this home in jamaica plain today. this fire broke out this afternoon at a two-family home on dunkster road. no one was home at the time. fire officials say the home suffered extensive damage, but luckily firefighters were able to knock it down before it spread to other homes nearby. >> with with these type fires in boston the houses are so close that it's the radiant heat, if you hold your hand next to a candle you can feel the heat. and if the fire is big enough, it will get the siding going. but they were able to knock it down quickly. >> anchor: two people were displaced, the cause is under investigation. take a look at this crime tape in a parking lot in weymouth today where a man was hit by a car, near a food festival. firefighter tell us the victim was not conscious when emergency workers arrived, but did later regain consciousness and he was flown to brigham and women's hospital in serious condition. police say the driver of that cars. that driver is a 46-year-old weymouth man, now fating several counts of o.u.i. weather wise we're off to a pretty good start this holiday weekend, a lot of sunshine today. however, it is a little bit chilly there have been no more reported bear sightings ever since the one last night. we first told but the animal being spotted in the rose street area on our fox 25 news at 10:00 last night. police found that bear asleep, and they called in environmental police. eventually the bear did wake up. this is the time of year when bears are stocking up on food. so newton police say if you do spot this or another bear again, call. temperature tonight a man is under arrest for reckless driving on a busy highway. police spotted 70-year-old man speeding on 93 in canterbury, new hampshire this morning. troopers eventually had to use spike strips to dethat it his tires to get him to stop, but he refused to get out of his car. eventually police did catch up with him, they it him under arrest and he's due in court on monday. to the cape now where police are working to track down a suspect in a string of break-ins. a resident capture these surveillance photos after a recent incident in orleans. police say there have been three separate break-ins within the last 10 days, all in the area of route 39 near cross road there. if you know anything, call orleans police. tonight in lowell, the community came together to support a high school student targeted in racist texts. they want to raise awareness so that this never happens again. he remembers the elation of being elected class the other. police say he threatened to stab them unless he gave them money. this happened four times in dorchester on september 27th, in the area of did itson, leroy and ridgewood streets. but it didn't end there. >> i think it's very scary. >> reporter: she's talking about a sexual assault an hour later and a mile away. near harbor view in dorchester avenue. >> seems like people just commit these crimes and have no second thought about doing it. >> reporter: fox 25 has learned this also involved a knife and robbery, but this included a sexual assault. police looking to question a similar looking man from the earlier robberies, a plaque male in his 20s, about five ten to six two is caught again on surveillance video. he is seen running towards sidney street, but this time he's caught on five different by, running by, running toward, and then running past this time from above. police want people to take a good look at this guy. appearance. he has two braids in his hair. police also believe he may have s.u.v. neighbors hope all the video will help to catch him. >> of course, yeah, i'm hopeful that we'll aid in getting the guy and get him off the street. >> reporter: in the fox 25 news. also tonight a road in wellesley is open once again, after this rollover crash. police say one person who h to be pulled from that car but the extent of the injuries are still not clear officials are still investigating what caused that crash. new hampshire authorities meanwhile are asking the public for any information about a man charged with sexually assaulting students. according to the concord monitor, the sheriff is trying to figure out if 30 used donald levesque assaulted any other victims out there. we told you earlier that he was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting several students including a 14-year-old boy. comedian bill cosby, meanwhile, deposed by a lawyer representing one of his alleged victims of sex assault. she says cosby sexually assaulted her in the 1970s at the playboy mansion when she was just 15 years old. her attorney says a judge will have until december to review the material and determine if anything cosby said will be made public. over the past several months numerous women have accused the course of several decades. sergeant bowe bergdahl could be spared time in jail, that's the recommendation of an army officer who said bergdahl should be given a lower level court martial instead. he was charged with desertion after leaving his post in afghanistan and being captured by the taliban in 2009. last year the u.s. released several taliban prisoners in exchange for his freedom. schools across our country are reevaluating security plans in the wake of several recent college shootings. massachusetts higher education commissioner santiago recently sat down with the associated press for an interview, and he says there are man's in place not only for active shooters here but also for mere threats as well. if you want to read northern arizona university has now been released from the hospital. it comes after a candle-light vigil on campus just last night. police say 18-year-old freshman steven jones shot and killed one student early friday morning and also injured three others. all of the victims belonged to the delta kia fraternity. jones is being held on $2 million bail tonight. in texas police have identified the student killed in a shooting at texas southern university. 18-year-old brett randall was shot outside of a student housing complex yesterday and he died on the way to the hospital. another student was also hurt in this. police detained two people after the shooting, but it's still not clear if they are actual suspects. this was the third shooting on or near that campus just this week. coming up the
