homeowners are cleaning up after tornadoes damaged hundreds of homes. the storm moved through last floors of two apartment buildings, leaving nothing but scraps of wood and twisted metal behind. residents had seconds to seek shelter.>> it was something you never want to imagine going through. i am thankful everybody's okay. >> no one was seriously injured in the storm which the national weather service says was the f- 3 tornado. five deaths are being blamed on that storm system including two today in virginia. within the past 30 minutes, crews have restored -- restore the weather radio service that was not working today during a storm system that sparked a tornado warning. steve barrett has been working to find out why those radios were silenced during dangerous storms. you spoke with the national weather service about this outage?>> reporter: i did. we're trying to get some answers about towers like the ones behind me. that is the tower that would broadcast to a weather alert radio like this. that went down and had problems in january during the storm. now for the second time, trouble. the radio broadcasts are especially important for people who don't know the severe weather is headed their way. the broadcasts come from the national weather service in melbourne and will alert you if there is, say, a tornado in the middle of the night. the system is a combination of radio broadcasts and cellular the signal to the tower. that cellular connection is what failed this time around. it also failed back in january. then we told you about the same problem at the tower in orlando. the national weather service said it had to work with their cellular carriers, at&t and verizon, to resolve the problem. clearly it's an issue with these towers reliability. i did call the national weather service headquarters in maryland to ask about that reliability and what can be happening again here in central florida. i've not heard back, but i'm expecting too. they said they would try to get back with me with those answers today. if i get those answers by six, we will bring them to you. steve barrett, orlando. the attorney for the i will millionaire convicted of murder filed paperwork to get him out of jail while he waits a new trial. he is now presumed innocent and should be released according to his attorney. the judge awarded a new trial because of mistakes made by his original attorney during trail. no date has been set for the new hearing. the three latest cases of zika virus in florida are all pregnant women. the health department has not said where the cases are. they are among 32 cases reported across floor -- florida. five are in central florida. the surgeon general testified today about the response to the virus. dr. john armstrong said agriculture is looking for ways to stop mosquitoes from spreading the virus.>> we work to keep the public informed -- informed to calm fears and educate for action. >> so far all of zika cases are travel related. we are following breaking news out of orange county where firefighters have been exposed to moldy conditions at a fire station. part of station eight nearly vista has been shut down. ty russell is live there right now. you found out firefighters have moved equipment to other stations. >> reporter: martha, we just arrived about an hour ago. after we got a tip first today saying a firefighters health and safety was at risk. the first thing we noticed was this big blue dumpster. we also noticed there were still cars in the parking lot. we knocked on the door and saw firefighters inside. i talked to the department spokesperson. she confirmed a portion of the building is closed. firefighters normally rest between calls. there usually 10 firefighters here, but now there are only four. we obtained an email sent from the fire chief to the department that states crews started removing ceiling tiles, betting, and carpet monday. the fire chief wrote the rest of the station is containment free. the mold was found after yearly quality tests. we asked to talk to the fire chief but we were told he is out of town. tonight we are asking whether closing a portion of this fire station and removing some equipment affects the homes and businesses and response times in these area. for now, ty russell, channel 9 eyewitness news. more breaking news, we just found out work on the i-4 project of a fatal accident at a worksite today. for the highway patrol says crews were working in an area off of wymore road around 11:30 this morning when the driver of the dump truck ran over a 34- year-old construction worker. at some point, the worker had walked behind the dump truck as it was backing up. the contractor signed a statement saying the entire worksite has been shut down. we have a crew headed to maitland to talk to the contractor about today's accident and what changes might be made at these sites. a bill that would require her -- require law enforcement officers to issue more tickets instead of putting teens in jail. these citations would create a list of first-time misdemeanors such as possession of alcohol or marijuana for which teams could be easily arrested. instead, they would be asked to do community service or participate in programs. not everyone is on board with the idea.>> we think it's a great idea for 90% of the kids out there. other 10% that we feel like we need discretion mandating law enforcement to issue civil citations is not a good idea.>> the bill faces a committee. it will get a hearing thursday. a judge just delivered a major blow to
