Transcripts For WFTS The Now Tampa Bay 20160225

we're experiencing today. tampa bay. >> right now we want to start man. this is the assistant fire chief facing embarrassing charges today. >> police say he stole a 5-hour energy drink from a 7-eleven. >> reporter: definitely embarrassment. that's a good way to put it. this is what the assistant fire chief is accused of stealing. it's worth $3.29. it happened at a 7-eleven down the street from the fire station on monday morning. it offers free fountain drinks to first responders but it doesn't mean it's a freebie to take whatever you want. the manager spotted jim shine putting a 5-hour energy drink in his pocket. two free fountain drinks and walked out without paying. jim said it was all an accident and he forgot to pay for it. >> it's an unfortunate incident. it's embarrassing for our department. we're not -- we're not pleased to have to discuss this. >> reporter: jim shine wasn't arrested or put in jail. instead he got a notice to appear in court. we're doing digging and find out this might not be the first time that the assistant fire chief was arrested or charged with similar crimes. we will tell you about that in the story we're working on for 5:00. eric waxler for the new tampa bay. >> thank you, eric. yesterday we had the tornadoes. right now snow adding to the big weather story. check out the cars brought to a stand still in indiana today. hard to believe they're dealing with that and we have sunny skies. flights canceled at airports look at the live misery map. the more red you see, the worse it is. dallas is a major hub. look at new york city. really seeing big delays and cancellations right now. >> holy crap, man. >> and it seems like we are seeing scenes like this every day now. tornadoes just to the south of us in port charlotte all the way to pennsylvania. about 52 tornadoes reported since tuesday. at least 7 people were dead. shay ryan was tracking it all day yesterday. what a difference 24 hours makes. >> this is actually a loop showing the last 24 hours of storm reports coming across the nation. there was so much of the nation affected by tornadoes. also wind damage and strong gusty winds. and then also as it is added in, it's the hail report and the winter weather. 431 wind reports and 45 hail reports. we're talking about a lot of nasty weather across the nation just with that one storm system that rolled on through. you can see how it has affected areas from north to south. again, we're seeing the travel issues. but here locally, things are looking fantastic. this is how we started the day thanks to clark taking this picture of north shore park. you can see how beautiful it was in pinellas county this morning as we were starting the day. right now in tampa, 62 degrees. clearwater also at 62. st. pete, 61. lots of sunshine out there. a few fair weather clouds but the winds are gusting to 25 miles per hour. but our sustained winds between 15 to 20 right now out of the northwest, bringing in the cooler air. if you thought today was a cooldown, wait until you see the temperatures ahead. tomorrow is going to be even cooler than today. and i'll show you which morning is going to be the coolest >> right now we do have fresh perspective coming in on how florida voters feel about the presidential race. donald trump steam rolling marco rubio on his own turf. he leads 44 to 28% among likely republican primary voters here in florida. as for the rest of the gop pack here, cruz, 12%. kasich, 7%. carson at the end with just 4%. by the way, our state is the biggest prize of the primary season because it's the largest state to dole out delegates on a winner-take-all basis. this is houston, texas tonight where all of the remaining gop candidates will face off for the last time before super tuesday. ted cruz has the most to lose at this point. it's his home state. trump and rubio are cutting into his lead there. they are hoping to slow down john kasich is under pressure to get out of the race to make rubio to represent the republican establishment. ben carson says it's in it for the long hall even though it's not clear what he could do at this point to save his campaign. they are trying to win hispanic voters. the number eligible to vote this year is at a record high. donald trump thinks he has those voters locked in after the nevada primary. >> do you know what i'm really happy about, i've been saying it for a long time. 46% with the hispanics. 46%. number one with the hispanics. >> okay. that may not be the case however nationwide. a new poll shows trump ranks worst of all candidates among hispanic voters. 80% say they don't like him. for him in a match-up with democrats. the economy is the most important issue followed by immigration for the voters. don't forget about the millennials. >> we can't forget about the young people. apparently their vote matters. or does it. some researchers say it does matter. when young voters are targeted, they can outsway and win elections, especially in these ten states we're talking about right now. they're saying right now we're number eight despite our mostly older population. we have a lot of 16 and 17-year- olds preregistered to vote online. i bet you can't guess which one is number one. ohio. >> i want to give you a live look at flint, michigan. bernie sanders is on stage talking about the ongoing water crisis. justice in flint and across the country. hillary clinton live in florence, south carolina. there she is with the mic in hand ahead of the primary there on saturday. the state's black population there is nearly twice the national average. tampa police released a youtube video that has a lot of people talking this afternoon. some say it's causing controversy. we're hearing straight from the department next. speaking of the cops, our partners at newsy had a controversial idea to keep the officer's names secret. >> reporter: should the name of police officers be kept a secret. senate bill 552 would keep the names of officers and fire marshalls secret. to get around the state's would be classified as personnel records which would make them exempt. the bill passed with a 25-15 vote. senator john cosro says it's to protect officers from becoming targets. the culture is not one of respect for law enforcement anymore. it's really how can we get these guys, what can we do. police officers are much more in jeopardy. there's no nefarious intent behind the bill. the bill is in response to a court ruling that forced the state to release the names of current and former law enforcement officers for a newspaper story. but opponents call it an extreme reaction to a scenario that doesn't happen often. police being attacked by people using public records is rare, adding to say every officer's name should be confidential is a step too far in sigh yes e. we're close to a police state in some respects. the virginia bill is now in the rememb you can watch newsy on your tv with your favorite >> welcome bankruptcy to the new tampa bay. police body cameras capture the bad, really bad and the ugly. a video is raising eyebrows for a video posted on social media. it's a statement that they hope the community will pay attention to, showing what the public doesn't get to see. >> don't reach in your pocket. let me check you out real quick. >> reporter: looks like an episode of cops. tampa police released this compilation of videos on youtube tweeting it out with the caption the video you won't see on the evening news. well, the video is causing questions on social media. those of us in the news room had questions ourselves wondering if they were directing it towards the media. especially after our i team just aired a story on monday refusing to get body cameras. i talked to tpd today. they say the video was in no way directed to anyone but meant to get the attention of the community. showing people what is advertised isn't always an accurate depiction of what the cops are dealing with on a daily basis. the video they have been working on since last summer has the body cameras picking up good things too. >> are you good to go. >> thank you very much. >> no problem, sir. >> reporter: and sometimes rather funny. tpd saying they not only want to serve and protect but gain the trust of the community as well. releasing this video helps with some of that transparency. >> you're back in business. >> thank you. >> reporter: the video has gotten hundreds of views on youtube. i posted the thing to my facebook page. just search the new tampa bay. typical accident. a dump truck. this was an accident from this morning. it caused big backups. the dump truck crashed into a poll, snapping them in half, leaving the wise in the middle of the road. adding to the danger for commuters. the back half of the dump truck was ripped away too. you can see right in the middle of the street. crashed. a listen. listen up especially if you have animals. the department of health wants everyone to know this is happening right now in west chase. it's really important for us to illustrate this for you because at first they thought it was going to be in town and country. they have changed where people need to be worried. it happened over on mallory square drive. this is a reminder to get your pets a rabies shot and keep them inside or in a fence if possible. another round of tornadoes moved through the south and east coast. the north carolina area torn apart. others just have a lot of damage. 30 tornadoes were confirmed over the two days of storms. that number is expected to grow because more than 50 tornadoes were reported. at least 7 people were killed. the now's todd walker following the story in virginia where three people there, including a 2-year-old boy, died when a tornado hit their home. we go to todd now live. >> reporter: yeah. ashley, just devastating damage out here. it's extensive damage. some people were saying that the tornado was on the ground for as long as 20 minutes at a time. there are certain places that because there are house that's are fine. there's a huge tree through this home. it will be a long time before waverly is able to clean up from the damage. when a storm like this comes through town, everyone wants to know what happened. >> unless you've been to war, you can't explain. >> i hadn't even noticed that. >> reporter: and how they can help. >> we want to make sure that everyone is taken care of. >> reporter: posts are waiting to help clean up. right now they can only wait. there are still too many huge trees down and too many power lines that are still too dangerous. >> the tree, something fell. >> reporter: larry is lucky to be alive. >> i feel blessed. >> reporter: that's his truck under the tree. he is not concerned about himself. >> i saw a little boy only about 2-year-old. we're trying to find him. >> reporter: it's the family of three that lived across the street and didn't survive the home that he wants you to think of. more so than my pain. >> reporter: when a storm this bad comes through town, everyone wants to know what happened. but how do you explain this? >> you're at a loss of words for it. it's almost surreal. >> reporter: today the virginia governor came through waverly and several other towns that were hit hard by this storm. in addition to the power crews helping to clean up the trees and power lines that are down, the national guard has been called in as the area is under a state of emergency. >> you can only hope for some relief for these people, todd. but the weather there today really isn't helping much. >> reporter: no, it's not. it's been incredibly windy all day long. hopefully the weather will start getting better by tomorrow so they can start imagine waking up to something like this this morning. it happened. the wildfires in malibu, california started around 3:00 this morning. so intense that people had to evacuate. one of the firefighters who was actually battling this blaze critically injured. you can see her life flighted right there. she was hit in the head by a bolder. they are trying to figure out what caused the fire. but this could be foreshadowing a long spring and summer year of the wildfires. shay, remember last year when we had all of the wildfires. >> yeah. the dry conditions and the wind. we at least have seen beautiful weather coming along with it. no problems as a result. this is the kind of weather that you want to head off to the beach and take a walk in the sand. it's cold and breezy but it's beautiful with all of the sunshine this afternoon. all of the clouds we saw this morning moving out. 15 to 20 miles per hour. i have seen gusts up to 25 miles per hour all day long. these winds will start to relax some tonight. it's that cool air that is coming in that i think we have all noticed. such a difference from the last few days to today as a result of that cool air coming in behind that cold front. still snowing off to the north. again, if you're going to be doing any travel, check ahead because you probably will find delays out there. winds like i said are relaxing. but that cooler air is filtering in tonight. with less cloud cover, when we lose that deck of clouds, we lose our blanket. we start to cool off even more. no rain for quite a little bit. as far as the temperatures go overnight, check this out. we still remain in pinellas county in the 50s closer to the gulf. but 48 as a low in tampa. off to the north, i think we will see mid 40s in crystal river and hernando. brooksville coming in at 48. dade city at 48. even mid 40s through highlands this is not the coldest morning ahead. i'll have more on that and i will time out when the winds will calm down coming up in my next forecast. also still head on the now, we will tell you what this rock is carrying that will help a billion people once it finally >> welcome back to the new tampa bay. space x is trying again to launch the rocket from cape canaveral. although they're not telling us why they decided not to have it yesterday. this is what it looked like last night, though. you see the ominous clouds behind there. satellite on board to give more internet access to asian countries. the launch is scheduled for 6:46. they're hoping to land the rocket booster so they can start reusing them to save the program more money. so far it has only come close to working once. speaking of being out of this world, you have breath taking images of the milky way. >> look at these colors. it is gorgeous. this is the most detailed image ever captured of the atmosphere. it opens up the possibility of new discoveries. and the commander who really knows firsthand all about this is scott kelly. he held his last in-space news conference this afternoon from the international space station. he spent more consecutive days in space than any other american astronaut. really cool. he is taking part in a study with his twin brother mark who >> sometimes when i think about it, i feel like i have lived my whole life up here. >> well, kelly says from a hygiene perspective, he feels like he has been camping in the woods for a year. but from a physical perspective, he feels pretty good. he says the toughest part is being isolated from loved ones and can't wait to jump in his pool and eat at a real table with frizz family -- with family and friends. well, laura, you have a look at something futuristic. >> check out these robots. maybe science fiction is not so much fiction anymore. now the robots might be reality. i want you to take a look at the atlas robot. the thing is real. the company that invented it, boston dynamics, a division of google posted this video on youtube of the robot in action. walks through the snow, opens doors and catches itself when it stumbles. it is even putting boxes up there. you could enlist him to work on the dishes at the house. the company expects it will one day be used for manual labor and even medical procedures. well, still ahead on the new tampa bay, how do you feel about the idea of getting a big mac in the er? why a fight to get mcdonalds out of tgh likely isn't going >> there's a mcdonalds selling high calorie fatty foods. in a lot of ways it goes against the healthy eating habits that the tampa hospital tries to teach. as the now's adam weiner found out, it doesn't look like it going away any time since. >> it makes no sense to have people being treated for diabetes on one floor and see the most recognized brand of junk food on another floor. >> reporter: a nonprofit consumer advocacy group demanded an end to a perceived contradiction. >> it seems wrong to me that a >> reporter: tampa general is a hospital on an island. >> you have minimal resources. so we do what we can to survive, i guess. that unfortunately is mcdonalds at times. >> reporter: that's a big part of the problem says janet, a registered nurse who works overnight at tgh when the cafeteria is closed. >> a lot of people are buzzy and don't have a chance to grab food from the cafeteria. >> reporter: this mcdonalds has been here since 1988, back when it was a public hospital. and a hospital spokesperson says tgh has a legally binding lease agreement with mcdonalds and it doesn't end until 2023. >> i assume that we know a lot more now about food than we did back then. i think if the decision was to made again, we would have a different outcome. >> reporter: until the contract runs out, the hospital says there will be no change. by the way, if the hospital's of fast food will be able to get their fix a mile and a half away on kennedy boulevard. >> thank you, adam. well, booze delivered right no your door. yeah. it's happening. and today the app is launching in st. pete. we told you about the app based alcohol service in tampa. apparently it worked out and now they're expanding. you have to buy 20 bucks worth of alcohol but the delivery fee is $5 regardless how big the order is. the app is available on apple and android devices. let's take a live look outside at the sky way bridge. it's calm. the cameras are not shaking. that has not been the case all day. the wind has been kicking up at points. we sent shay ryan outside to give us a better idea of the winds. >> if you're like me and don't like the -- don't mind the cold the winds, the wind speeds will be coming down to 10 to 15 miles per hour and between 5 to 10 overnight. with the skies clearing, we are going to see some really chilly temperatures overnight. we're talking back in the 40s. i'll let you know just how much we are going to warm up and how fast it will happen coming up in my next forecast. >> thanks, shay. right now the irs auction we told you about earlier this week is underway. it's of an incredible collection of rock and roll memorabilia. i'm talking ozzy osbourne, madonna, lots of things from different people. we have a closer look at the unique moment in music history. >> reporter: for lovers of rock, this could be their nirvana. an auction where some of music's loudest voices are up for sale. >> we don't have this type of memorabilia that often. >> reporter: from a nirvana band to a guitar signed by one of the eagles. >> joe walsh's autograph. >> reporter: everything must go. >> everything from johnny cash to ozzy osbourne and everything in between. >> reporter: the irs confiscated it from one man in kansas city. selling it will help pay his tax bill. >> you have a couple of bidders that want something and it the sky is the limit. >> reporter: how about dressing like a member from kiss. the band apparently wore these boots in concert. >> reporter: with more than 100 incredible pieces of rock history up for sale, even irs >> you can't do that. it's not worth the job. >> reporter: what it is all worth is still unclear. but some will empty their pocket book for a page of the american song book. >> it is very unique. >> reporter: for the now, i'm >> you may want to follow this facebook page, love what matters. inspirational photos and random acts of kindness throughout the page. there is one story, one recent piece out of bradenton that you have to see. this photo was taken outside of a chick-fil-a. a chick-fil-a off of interstate 75 at creek road crossing. an employee there sitting down in the median. he is just talking to this homeless man. the person who took the picture said they may have actually >> that is awesome. just in, another move in the apple versus fbi case in the last hour. what it means for the iphone back. >> well, right now supporters of isis are trying to stop an effort to stop the terror group from using social media to recruit members. ashley has more on that. >> yeah. here on the now just yesterday. it's called the madison valley wood project. it involves top market being, tech and entertainment companies working with the justice department to crack down on extremists. now there is a video threatening the ceos of facebook and twitter. both unveiled campaigns to suspend accounts and delete posts that promote violence and terrorism. also on the terrorism front, breaking within the last hour, apple asking a judge to throw out the order for them to unlock the phone of a san bernardino shooter. they say the fbi is looking for dangerous power through courts. apple says it would take two to four weeks and ten engineers to write the software to get the back door into the phone. in the meantime the tech giant is trying to make the phones even more hack proof. the fbi wants to hack into the phone of shooter to get more information on the attack. today the fbi director saying by the judge, the issue of personal security versus public safety goes above and beyond that. >> i do think the larger question is not going to be answered in the courts and shouldn't be because it's really about who do we want to be as a country and how do we want to govern ourselves. >> as we've been telling you, apple is concerned creating a back door for the phones that would compromise the security of all phones. >> when it comes to retirement savings, women are more on top of it than men. that's what new research shows. women are 14% more likely to sign up for a 401(k) at work for retirement. well, still ahead right here on the new tampa bay, take a good look at this guy. when i tell you why he was arrested, it will make you more aware of your surroundings the next time that you leave a trying to make the smartest buy when it comes to sports. you get what you pay for, right? well, not with football helmets. i'll tell you what a new study >> right now, we can all learn a lesson from a brother and sister in brooksville. the story starts as they were just leaving a store. >> a 9-year-old boy and his teenage sister noticed this guy acting strange in his car. what happened next was enough to scare them to death and put him behind bars. the now's sarah rosario shows us. >> reporter: it happened here in the wal-mart parking lot last night. a 19-year-old and her 9-year- old brother putting away groceries when the 9-year-old looks over and sees this man exposing himself and masturbating. they quickly get in the car and take off. but it didn't end there. police say that suspect, 22- year-old caleb carol followed them here to the subway parking lot. that's where the teenager got nervous, calling her mom first and then 911. >> they were explicit in the details on what they saw. there wasn't any doubt in their mind what he was doing. it is shocking into the cops showed up right away, arresting carol on the spot. he was booked into jail on a $5,000 bond. when we stopped by his house to see if anyone was home, no one answered. carol is now facing lewd charges. police say this should serve as a reminder to be aware of why you are surroundings and in this case the victims did the right thing. >> they were vigilant. they kept their eyes open. they maintained the awareness of what was going on around them. they saw it before it turned into something worse. >> reporter: in brooksville for the new tampa bay, i'm sarah rosario. >> right now we want to take you live to florence, south rally there. you can see this time it's her husband and former president bill clinton on stage there. clinton there speaking on behalf of his wife. on the gop side, big night. live look right now at the debate stage in houston, texas. this is the last debate before super tuesday, cruz's home state. if he doesn't win texas it could derail his strategy in the southern states. >> talking to meteorologist shay ryan right now. i would much rather the wind we're dealing with than the rain and craziness we had yesterday. >> this is true, right? we're certainly behind the nasty stuff. but, laura, i wanted to bring you back in here because i know you like to do this. [laughter] >> you've got to have fun while you can, right? because the weather at least is pretty nice out there even temperatures in the low 60s right now across hillsborough county. 62 in tampa. off to the north and citrus county, check out the temperatures. already into the upper 50s. so you can see that cooler air is starting to settle in. as i mentioned overnight tonight, we will see the winds calming down and the skies have already cleared ow. you can see in the futurecast, i brought this through to 8:00. you probably didn't even notice the time notes advanced because there's nothing to see. we get a few clouds early tomorrow morning. a little bit of energy behind the front. i think we will get a few clouds out of it but not likely rain. maybe a few clouds. the winds continue to relax tonight. and that cooler air really starts to settle in overnight. so you wake up tomorrow morning to even colder temperatures. take a look at this. 48 degrees tomorrow morning when you head out. up to 62 for the high. tomorrow afternoon, even cooler but with less wind and plenty of sunshine. by saturday morning, we have a low of 43. 70 in the afternoon, which is nice. but that morning low of 45, if there's any confusion about how i feel about these cool temperatures, this is about it. a little upset and then i'm just surprised and then sad. i have to shed a tear on sunday morning when the 40s stick around. as far as ups and downs go, things get better by monday. we've been talking about tornadoes and wind and that snow out there causing all kinds of problems with nasty weather. some unusual weather is actually bringing some nice things to desert valley. >> this is really cool. because of all of this rain, this is death valley national park. what we're looking at is a super bloom. it's being attributed to all of the rain. let's go do andy choi to tell us more about it. >> it's like a little cup or a little bowl. >> reporter: in the reservoir of life. >> look, there's another flower >> reporter: there are times of abundance and times of scarcity. watching these extremes come together at death valley national park. the couple from canada and scores of nature lovers couldn't pass up the chance to see the super bloom of wild flowers. >> it lifts my spirits. >> reporter: it's a once in a decade phenomena in the california park known for its high heat and arid conditions. >> we only get two to three inches of rain typically. we got that much within a month. that kind of sets a stage. then the el nino season kicked in, which means we've got additional rain in the months since october. it actually smells like a rose. >> reporter: with all of these flowers come a whole bunch of seeds. seeds can lay dormant in the ground for decades, waiting for the perfect time to bloom. >> the seeds are there in the rocks and the soil. did this year, we get a beautiful wild flower display. >> reporter: as fleeting as that cycle feels. >> i think there's beauty everywhere. >> reporter: here at the crossroads of life and death. >> maybe the sun is going down. >> reporter: hope is the seed that can take root just about anywhere. at death valley national park, i'm andy choi for the now. >> aren't those images gorgeous? the park says the flowers won't be around for too much longer. they're expected to stick around until mid-march. you see our manatees huddled up around this time of year on apollo beach. they stick together for warmth. they're tracking any changes in the population. so far what we're seeing from the numbers, manatees are doing great. today fish and wildlife counted 6,250 manatees in the tampa bay area and off of florida's east coast. these are the only two years on record that they counted more than 6,000 manatees. by the way, you can swim with them in three sisters beach, apollo beach. it's a nice area set up to watch. president obama's top picks for supreme court says he doesn't want the job. the nevada governor says he notified the white house about this decision today. he hasn't talked about it with top senate leaders. but he says the idea of being considered is humbling. president obama is met to talk with senate leaders about filling the position next week. republican leaders say they're not going to put somebody in there until the presidential election. lax has the all clear after an evacuation in the last 45 minutes. you're looking at a photo that we found on twitter from a plane on the tarmac. police found a suspicious bag at one gate. they brought the bomb squad in to investigate. all of the police cars underneath the wing. luckily they have been given the all-clear. everything is okay. airline prices keep going up. we've already had three hikes since january. when you look at fare tracking websites but fuel prices are down. why are we paying more? folks in the industry tell us part of it has to do with with demand and airlines hiring again. labor is the largest cost for the industry. a spokesperson told us after decades of workforce reductions, airlines added about 10,000 jobs last year. they're investing more money in workers benefits and pay. they are putting money into more planes and are expected to buy more than 300 this year alone. but the business travel is fuel surcharges that raises the price of your ticket. the organization and a senator from connecticut are now asking the department of transportation to look into this and investigate. they say with oil prices down, airlines have only changed what they're calling these charges but they haven't actually dropped the charges. i have a story that will break your heart. a little boy suffers from an allergic reaction from a dog boarding a plane. what happens?
