will be heavy rain. beginning tomorrow especially. as we look at titan doppler radar, pretty quiet now as you would expected but look at this, that easterly flow and as you go further and further south you get closer and closer to what is of course tropical depression, not a tropical storm, yet. we need 39, so we're close and that will happen as the center moves over open water and begins to head in our direction. this won't make a pass at us until thursday but well out ahead of it beginning tomorrow heavy rains begin. we'll talk more about that, accumulation possession and even flood flowing nicely in both directions, just five minutes to get from busch into downtown tampa and speaking of downtown tampa -- we have that major construction project almost two years it will take to it's 5:32. breaking news in brussels -- authorities say an explosion overnight outside a crime lab is not terror related and was likely set on purpose to destroy evidence. >> no one was hurt. a spokeswoman says there's no point. the original reports said a car drove through a barrier and an explosion followed that damaged part of the building. again no confirmation of that. we'll keep you updated on the investigation. it was chaotic at l.a.x. overnight. police spent hours searching for a reported gunman but later said they found no one. they say people mistook loud noises for gunfire sending hundreds running on to sidewalks, even the tarmac. it's not cle that someone in a zorro concostume was detained. it's still unclear if this person was connected in any way. we told with you a similar situation two weeks ago at jfk airport. passenger ran for cover and armed officers swept the terminal after reports of gunshots. they say there was no gunfire. instead they believe it started from loud cheering from people watching the olympics. there were two airscares at drunk to fly arrested in scotland before takeoff. pilots. >> and clues over an emergency landing in florida after a southwest flight's engine fails mid-flight. that flight was on its way to orlando from new orleans saturday morning when all of a sudden the plane started to attack on smoke and losing altitude quickly. airline officials confirmed there was a mechanical issue with the number one engine, you can see the damage there in the photo. the pilot was able to land safely in pensacola, none of the passengers -- or one of the passen knew the situation was serious when the oxygen masks dropped. >> i had any 5-year-old sitting next to me, i looked out the window, there was the smoke. i held him more close and i looked back and it was gone, just saw metal flapping. >> according to southwest none of the 99 passengers or five crew members were hurt during the rough ride. they all boarded another plane later took them to orlando. meantime two american pilots are suspended after they were arrested for trying to fly alcohol. united airlines pilots were arrested shortly after takeoff from scotland to new jersey. the flight was boarding with 141 passengers saturday morning when police made the arrest. the pilots are expected in court today. if charged and convicted they could face up to two years in prison. awaiting sentencing for a bay area murderer. 13 years ago annalish disappeared from her home. blood was found throughout the house. it was a decade before deputies gathered enough evidence to arrest john malquist for the murder. the judge is set to sentence him today. key receive up to life in prison. hundreds of people are expected to pay respects to one of the bay area's most beloved and respected catholic leaders today and tomorrow. monsignor lawrence higgins died last wednesday. a public visitation is today from noon to 9:00. and also tomorrow at st. parish he is developments on that devastating earthquake in italy. investigators now looking into whether criminal factors led to a higher death toll. so far nearly 300 people have been found dead and crews are leveled by the quake last week. today a local organization is making sure that families in need are getting the protection they need from the zika virus. in a few hours feeding tampa bay is going to pass out 15,000 cans of mosquito repellent to anybody who needs it. the latest zika report for florida shows 15 new travel related cases. some of them are from here in hillsborough and sarasota counties. that brings a total number of travel related cases now to 545. and the nontravel related cases actually went down one. one case originally thought to be transmitted in the winwood area of miami-dade county actually came from a trip outside the u.s. that means right now there are 42 locally transmitted cases. as janelle mentioned earlier a major road project begins today in downtown tampa. in front of the amalie arena. sections of channelside dr closed for months. the closures due to lightning owner's billion dollar redevelopment project of the channel district. the first step is realigning multiple roads and building a central cooling facility to supply air conditioning to future developments in the surrounding neighborhoods. biggest impact, on drivers going to events at the arena. part of channelside drive will be closed until next summer. tampa international airport is hosting its third and hundreds of concessions jobs. there are hundreds of new shops opening this fall. summer thunderstorm tropical depression down to the south. moisture associated with it is going to be in here by tomorrow. we'll talk more about that and the flooding potential coming up. 5:40. while weather details just ahead. a local restaurant worker set to begin the long drive to louisiana today to deliver supplies to flood victims there. the salty rim grill in st. pete beach started a donation drive. some who lost everything, homes, businesses. they say the response they've gotten from the community has been overwhelming. items they are bringing to baton rouge include clothing, shoes, diapers, food and water. we're preparing are now possible flooding here as we track the tropics. >> some people around the bay area are not waiting to protect their homes. this man got drenched trying to fill up a few sandbags yesterday. pinellas county opened up three sandbag locations over the weekend. the city of st. pete also city of gulfport had a station open yesterday. with the possibility of heavy rainfall for several days many people want to get a jumpstart. one family told us they are used to flooding and know during hurricane season anything can happen so it's better to be ready. >> we live in a flood zone on the lake so we need to prepare for rains. we just put in a pool so the backyard is kind of a mess. we have some low spots why we're here today. >> sandbag sites in pinellas county are open today during daylight hours. st. pete locations are open from 9:00 to 5:00. we posted the addresses of those sandbag locations on our web site, also on facebook. ivan is here now to watch the tropics. looks like we're going to be watching whatever this ends up being. >> right now it looks like a big rain event. the issue is, is that it will begin early here. so the fact that the storm doesn't arrive, the center of ahead of it we're going to get pretty good rainfall the next few days. now today, if you're going to be out getting sandbags or doing whatever you're doing. it will be dry the early part. day. we'll have downpours later this afternoon. not associated with the storm, just our typical summer thunderstorms here. 35 mile-per-hour winds so still a depression. it's right on the northern tip of cuba. western side of the island. it will continue to move to the north. the latest advisory from the national hurricane center does have it going becoming a tropical storm by later today and then turning to the north and eventually hooks to the north and east. so there's the position on wednesday night and thursday morning so by thursday and thursday night that is when we would experience the strongest winds which right now forecast only to be 50 to 60 miles per hour so. we're keeping it as a tropical storm. can that change? of course but right now that is what all the models agree on. as we look, by the way, once it's become a tropical storm it that is going to be moving off the carolina coast and skirting them with tropical storm-force conditions as we head through tonight and then curving to the north and east. so there's a run here by later on this evening. one or the other will become hermine and ian and then gaston. the first major hurricane across the atlantic is headed north and east. look at the rainfall already in cuba. this is what i'm talking about -- the system is well to our south but the moisture associated with it and the heavy rain bands are going to set up beginning tomorrow into wednesday and into thursday. so it's going event despite the fact that the low is going to be down to the south. it's pretty typical with the tropical storm. the rain is well out ahead of the center along with the winds. in fact some of the strongest winds with tropical storms are contained in the rain bands as opposed to the center. so the moisture moves ahead of us, there's the position of the storm by wednesday morning. then into thursday making a pass at us here with gusty winds. certainly and building seas. so dry early for today. then showers and thunderstorms begin to develop. we'll see pretty good downpours. we'll have lightning as well as everything pushes from east-to- west and then we'll get into heavier rain situation beginning tomorrow. continuing into wednesday and then windy with heavy rain on thursday as our tropical storm begins to approach here. so we have plenty of time to watch it but right now looks like a big rain event for us. upwards of six inches potential through the next several days. >> sounds like we need to enjoy the dry roads while we can. if you're heading to the across the bridges. looks like the tampa side of the howard frankland bridge, you can see traffic pretty light out there. let's check the drive times across all three bridges so you can see how long it takes to we're hearing of a serious crash in pinellas, 34th street and 5th street. we're working to get more details. more coming up. 5. 49. happening today -- florida department of transportation will hold a workshop to inform the public about proposed community enhancements to the tampa bay express project. the workshop will run from 5:30 to 7:30 this evening at the saunders library at 1505 nebraska avenue in tampa. the meeting will focus on the 4 and 275 interchange along with i-275 up to bearss avenue. today a memorial mass will be held for two nuns murdered in their mississippi home. a wake was held for them last night. the church's priest spoke about the countless lives these nuns touched and how much they will be missed. paula merrill and margaret howell hoped homeless people. found dead in their home last nursing. a suspect was arrested friday and said he confessed to the killings. police haven't released a motive but said they found the from their home and there were signs of a break-in. two brothers charged with killing nba star dwyane wade's cousin are expected in court today. chicago police say both brothers are convicted felons who were on parole at the time of the shooting. wade's cousin was fatally shot friday while on her way to register her kids in school. police say she was not the intended target. she leaves behind four children, just 32 years colin kaepernick is defending his protest of the national anthem. he plays for the san francisco 49ers and remained seating during the playing of the national anthem at three preseason games. he says it's a protest over police brutality against african-americans and said he won't stand up and show pride for a country that oppresses people of color. >> it was not something i planned as far as blowing up. i personally decided i just can't stand for what this represents right now. and, the fact that it has blown up like this, i think is a good thing. >> right now kaepernick's fellow athletes stand undercover police officer says he busted mariah carey's hiv positive sister in a prostitution sting. alison carey is described as a transient who advertised her services on-line. she was arrested friday after an investigation in a hotel in she identified herself as mariah carey's sister when arrested. she's expected in court tomorrow. alison carey has been estranged from her sister for years. she was diagnosed with hiv in the 1990s. a trip to the hospital kept gymnast gabby douglas from making a trip to the mtv music awards. doctors treated her for a mouth injury that became infected. she had serious swelling and bad reaction to medications. she and teammates were supposed to present the award for best female video. the other gymnasts went with the awards ceremony without gabby. she posted on instagram that she was resting comfortably but sad to miss the event. one toddler doesn't just sing the alphabet song, she belts it out. >> she's 2 years old, listen to this. >> tuv -- ? w night and one of the bullets went through the front bedroom where that baby girl was sleeping. the bullet hit her in the wrist. she's in the hospital this morning, expected to survive. we have calls into the sheriff's office now to find out any more information on who might have been involved and what led up to this. abc action news anchor james tully will bring an update when we head back to the scene live in about 30 minutes. in pasco county a man with alzheimer's found dead in wesley chapel pond. deputies say it appears 87-year- old herman walter drowned, found near his caretaker's home. deputies say they got a call about 3:00 a.m. he was missing and found his body an hour later. he recently moved here from georgia and had been complaining about wanting to go home. detectives don't suspect foul play. breaking news in belgium. we're learning more about an explosion outside of a crime lab. there are reports it's not terror related and it was likely set on purpose to destroy evidence. there's significant damage to of a bomb but investigators again say those are false and again this is not terror related. they say someone drove a car through a security barrier and that crash was then followed by an explosion. we're also following a scare at the los angeles international airport after reports of a shooter. this morning police say they did not find any evidence of gunshots. they say it was some unknown loud noise that sent hundreds of people running scared. during the chaos police arrested a man dressed zorro costume. someone reported a man in dark clothing. the person hasn't been identified but again we don't know if there is any kind of connection between that person arrested and the reports of a gunman. >> i get the police all around me telling me to put the hands up. i'm not even thinking about what is going on, right? and what i was wearing. >> police released that man calling it a misunderstanding. they are now trying to figure out what was -- what that sound was.
