hillsborough county, it's about eight minutes. so not much slower than normal but you do want to leave extra time. again, this is a tow truck driver who was killed road loading up a car on his truck. police are looking for a black volkswagen with front end damage. we also have another fatal crash in port richey we're following. a possible fatal crash in clearwater too. i'll have more on all these incidents coming up in about 15* minutes. how are the weather conditions later this afternoon? some changes from what we had over the weekend. crystal blue skies saturday and sunday. not the case today. not a rainout. i still think you're good for outdoor activities. some kids in school, some not. a southeast wind takes over for today and cloud cover will begin to thicken. but i think we have heavier showers and storms. in fact over mississippi and georgia now. that line will begin to move through tonight and into the early part of tomorrow. that willing arrive just in time for the commute. more on the timing coming up. 5:32. develop this morning, a bradenton man dead and manatee county deputy off the streets as the investigation moves forward, into what led that deputy to shoot that man sunday night. mark stoddard is the husband and father killed. rodney dunigan joins us live from in front of the home where it happened in the 4800 block of buchalia circle. rodney, investigators say that deputy had no choice. >> reporter: that's right. they say mark stoddard was already with the knife standing outside and already cut his own wrists so he injured himself and deputies say they repeatedly told him to drop the knife and say he would not. then say he actually approached a deputy in a threatening this all started as a domestic disturbance call. his wife donna called 911 reporting her husband had been drinking yesterday evening. and he had a knife and threatened to harm himself and her. thankfully she was able to run out of the home and run to a neighbor's home. no one else was hurt. but again investigators trying to determine what led to all of this. at this point this morning the deputy's name hasn't been released. back out live here, this is another look at the home where all of this happened last night. a peaceful quiet community, a lot of folks telling our reporter last night they were shocked anything like this could happen. again that deputy's name hasn't been released. at some point today we also hope to learn a bit more about mark stoddard's background and the background of the couple to find out if they had a history of any sort of domestic issues. life -- live if bradenton, rodney dunigan, abc action news. 5:33. two teens are facing serious charges. accused of robbing three people at gunpoint and brutally >> it happened at two neighboring apartment complexes along dale mabry and carolwood. the first at the foxcroft apartments early sunday morning. vanessa martinez says she was walking from her car to her apartment when she was jumped by a man demanding her purse. she resisted and then a second man came up, the two beat her with a pistol and robbed her. >> at that time i tried to turn around but he pulled his gun on me so i just paused and looked. i just said lord please be with me. >> deputies arrived to investigate her attack. more shots were fired, just down the road in that same apartment complex. a man was beaten and robbed, bullets fired through his front door, hit that roommate in -- and hit his roommate in the leg. the crime spree continued in a neighboring complex where they beat and stole from a third victim before being arrested. 18-year-old nicholas gillam and 16-year-old were both arrested covering pinellas county now -- where two young boys community. saturday evening in clearwater. deputies say a 1-year-old wandered off and just 30 seconds later his father found for a fish farm. that toddler is in the hospital now. we're hearing his injuries are life threatening. detectives say it appears to be just a horrible accident. in the second near drowning, this happened 10:30 yesterday morning at a backyard pool in clearwater. leaving a 2-year-old fighting that toddler was rushed to a hospital where he is also in there is a new show of support for two hernando county within months of each other. a motorcycle group came together to give them a special gift and priceless memories. >> thank you so much, guys. [ applause ] >> the band of brothers motorcycle association year-old zach and 1-year-old zane meyers. their grandparents are raising them after their mother died from an illness in october. and father died in a motorcycle crash just two weeks ago. the group raised the money to honor a fellow biker, despite being complete strangers. the boys' grandmother said it was completely unexpected. >> they are great people. very good people, to do something like that for strangers. it's amazing i thank them so much from the bottom of my heart. >> if it was us in -- that happened to and all of us having kids, if something happened to us as parents, that someone would step in and try to help our children out and make sure they had a good future. >> zach even got to sit on one of the harleys and got his own biker head gear. a gofundme account is set up for the family and so far has raised nearly $8,000. in democracy 2016, we're exactly a month away from the florida presidential primary. tomorrow's your last day to affiliation in time to vote in the primary. because florida is a closed primary state only voters registered with a particular party can vote for that party's candidates in the primary. hillary clinton will not be campaigning in palm beach county today after all. she's cancelled her trip. recent polls show bernie sanders continues to surge so the former secretary of state decided to attend more events today in nevada instead. that state holds its democratic caucus on saturday. the former president bill clinton is coming to today's rally in riviera beach in place of his wife. he plans to explain why hillary is the only presidential candidate running that would make a real dins for florida families -- difference for florida families. the faithful are starting to gather in the mexican southern state where pope francis will visit today. the pope will have mass at a soccer stadium in the state capital. grants who suffer a torturous journey through mexico trying to reach the u.s. border. yesterday pope francis delivered a hopeful message to 300,000 people attending mass in a mexico city suburb. he pleasedded with mexicans to turn their own country into a land of opportunity so they wouldn't need to emigrate. raise your glass, say cheers. not yet. but in hours the tampa mayor is going to officially declare today in florida, florida craft beer day in tampa. >> to recognize local breweries. >> the first brewery in the southeast has been around for 100 years. >> since then dozens of local breweries have opened in the bay area. today'presidents' day and it's also your last chance to enjoy the florida state fair. the fair ends its 12-day run in tampa today. it is student day at the fair for kids in pinellas county, they close 9:00 tonight. the midway will remain open for at least an hour after the will we see more of this weekend's beautiful weather for the final day of the fair? it's going to be better than the first day which was pouring. i still think it won't be like this weekend. a couple of showers. in fact we'll begin to cloud up by the middle part of the day but it will be mild so you can about wearing anything too 75 degrees by 4:00. we do have the line of showers and thunderstorms rolling in, tonight that will be heavier rain. i'll talk about that in a few minutes. coming up -- the one thing this man says kept him alive for a week. after his truck broke down. the coincidence that led to his rescue straight ahead. >> what is going on there? [screams] >> still ahead, a dangerous and chaotic scene unfolds in this indiana home. good monday morning. 5:43. you're looking live at breaking news we've been following all throughout the morning. this is the howard frankland bridge. there was an accident that happened on that bridge, a deadly accident, a tow truck driver was hit and killed, florida highway patrol troopers are looking for the driver who hit him and took off. a reporter just arrived on scene, is setting up now to go live. we'll check in with him coming up in a moment to find out the latest. right now in indiana, a man is under arrest after authorities say he allegedly tried to stab his pregnant girlfriend claiming their baby was the product of satan. police say the man you see here, 23-year-old garrett carpenter, chased his girlfriend with a bible and knife last week. according to court documents the man's girlfriend says carpenter was acting bizarre and very strange and that he asked her for a hug and kiss before grabbing a machete and tried to hit her in the abdomen with it. police say he was under the influence of heroin and methamphetamine at the time. the grandmother called police and carpenter was arrested. he's charged with attempted murder. the woman and her unborn baby are going to be ok. a louisiana man suspected of shooting two police officers is dead. we have just learned both officers will pull through. they responded to a domestic who knew him. we're told after less than two miles smith jumped out of his car with a rifle and shot the officers. one hit in the head, the other hit in the side but was saved by his police gear. other officers shot smith and he died over the weekend in a hospital. new information this morning surrounding the water crisis in flint, michigan. governor snyder is seeking more medicaid coverage for people under 21 and pregnant women who have been exposed to the led- contaminated water. snidesser saying about 15,000 more people in flint would benefit if the government approves the request. he says the state would help by lining up doctors and behavioral health specialists and other services. we're also following more news. north korean kim jong un is ordering his country's scientists to press ahead with more satellite launches. he says the recent launch struck a telling blow to pyongyang's enemies that are trying to keep his country from advancing scientifically. last week the u.s. increased over the february 7th rocket launch. many believe the launches are tests for the north's nuclear program. new this morning -- no stranger to controversy, kanye west dropped a new album over the weekend, with it a bombshell. he says he's $53 million in debt. he made the statement in a tweet before appearing on "saturday night live." it's not clear if the statement is true or maybe a publicity stunt. yesterday he called on facebook founder mark zuckerberg to invest $1 billion in his ideas after "realizing he is the greatest living artist and greatest artist of all time." an oregon man is lucky to be alive and telling one incredible survival story. he says he managed to live on snow while he was stranded for a week. 69-year-old flip bessenson was finally rescued, recovering in a hospital. >> police say his pickup broke down in a remote part of nevada while driving home from arizona. drinking melting snow and rationing what little food he had until a trooper stumbled upon him while checking road conditions. good morning. we're following breaking news, a serious crash from overnight, three serious crashes. we begin with the howard frankland bridge, northbound lanes. a tow truck driver was struck and killed while he was trying to load a car on to his truck. police are looking for the driver of a black volkswagen with damage to the front end. right now as far as traffic is concerned, two lanes of traffic now getting by this crash site here. seeing a slight delay on the howard frankland bridge but still early. if this is still out there, in a bit we could see major delays. let's check drive times across the bay, less than 10 minutes to get across all three bridges now. another crash we are following in clearwater, fhp is calling this a possible fatal crash, eastbound olmerton road at fountain parkway. i'm just getting word our reporter corey dierdorff is live on the scene at the howard frankland. what can you tell us about that crash? >> reporter: good morning. we're just a little ways away from the accident scene. this is about a mile up the howard frankland bridge. just because of how dangerous the area of this accident is in. you know the howard frankland bridge is a four-lane bridge each way going over the tampa bay. right as you get to the hub and come over, that's where the accident actually happened. we want to stay safe and stay out of the way of emergency crews where the accident scene still is. fhp not saying much, only telling us that 2:30 this morning a tow truck driver was loading a car on the back of a tow truck when he was struck by a black volkswagen, that killed him. the driver of the volkswagen took off and fhp is looking for him. they are gathering evidence now surrounding the crash. if you have any information, you're asked to call fhp. front end damage. traffic still flowing but as we move into rush hour we're expecting to see more delays. we have not got an time on how long this will take to clear the interstate. we'll bring you updates all morning on abc action news, abcactionnews.com, as well as twitter @tampabaytraffic. back to you. not a bad-looking start. temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. more cloud cover though by this afternoon unlike the last couple of days. so keep it in mind. titan doppler quiet now, widening out the shot, showers coming in across the eastern part of the peninsula. i think today, 20% coverage. then a heavy line of showers and storms but that won't get in until late tonight, early part of tomorrow. so futurecast, as we put this in motion, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, you see the popularp pop-up showers with the southeast wind and heavier line of showers and thunderstorms rolls in. this could be a pretty hefty line. as far as the severe weather threat i think that is still to the north. we'll have thunder with this but 4:00 tomorrow could be on but it's a quick-moving system so that by 7:00, 8:00 it's already pushing towards the southeast, across highlands county and then a northwest dry flow takes over and we're in pretty good shape after. that ahead of it though warm, temperatures in the low to mid- 70s this afternoon. in fact it's a few degrees the weekend with temperatures that will be systemlar over the next few -- similar over the next few days with slight changes in the middle part of the week. a little cooler. we stay in the 70s with full sun through the weekend. coming up -- the woman dubbed the diamond diva allegedly took a class in robbery 101. who officials say trained this woman, who is behind a $4 million jewelry heist across five states including florida. >> tens of thousands of sharks have been spotted a stone's throw away from south florida beaches. 5:53. an indiana high school has major bragging rights. now holds the national record for the most consecutive state titles in any sport. on saturday the carmel high school girls swim team won its 30th straight state championship in swimming. that makes this about girls' swim team the best high school sports program in the country. after the win saturday their coach talked about what keeps >> they are always continuing to learn to get better but the girls here, it's only their fourth one. while it's 30 for the bram program, every year it's that, hey, i need to do it. no one wants to be the team at that loses so there's a little positive pressure there too. >> that team broke a record that was held by a high school in hawaii. that school won 29 straight boys' swimming and diving championships from 1958 to 1986. marine biologists are studying thousands of sharks that are now migrating off the coast of south florida. thousands of black tipped sharks are gathering off the coast of palm beach county the national oceanic and atmospheric administration says the majority of the shark bites in florida from are black- tipped sharks but they are rarely fatal. an fiu biologist professor says they migrate off the florida coast every year which coincides with their mating season. >> there were hardly any sharks boynton beach and then from palm beach, singer island, it was loaded, literally tens of thousands of sharks. >> professors still trying to figure out why they are attracted to that particular area. says it could somehow be linked to climate change. authorities in australia removed a roughly 10-foot dangerous tiger shark from the waters off a popular beach. it was caught over the weekend, close to surfers off the coast of bris bon. australian media reports it's the 12th shark caught in that area over a two-month span. 5:55. still ahead, tracking breaking news -- at 6:00 a deadly hit- and-run on the howard frankland bridge. our crew on the ground gathering information about exactly who authorities need you to watch for. >> also, it's a popular smartphone app that your kids probably use all the time but we'll explain the reason one family says this app caused a tragedy that cost a young woman at 6:00 did. a deadly morning on bay area roads. several accidents playing out across the region from pasco county to pinellas county. at least two of the crashes deadly. we begin along the howard frankland bridge with a traffic know about. the search is on now for a hit- and-run driver that killed a to he truck driver. >> corey dierdorff joins us now live from the scene. do we have any idea, do troopers know anything about the person they are looking for this morning? >> reporter: good morning. troopers only telling us they are looking for a black volkswagen after that driver hit a tow truck driver while he was on the side of the howard frankland bridge. and that driver, well he took off. you can see behind me traffic is flowing all right. we're a little ways away from the scene because of how dangerous the scene is. you know the howard frankland bridge is four lanes on each side. two of the outside lanes just past the hump are taken over by this investigation now. let's look at video a little closer to the scene. and what we know now, which is not much but fhp saying it was 2:30 this morning a he tow truck driver was working on the outside lane loading a car to the back of the tow truck when struck by a black volkswagen volkswagen took off and fhp is looking for him. there's quite an extensive scene as fhp gathers evidence surrounding the crash if you have info you're asked to call fhp. once again they are looking for a black volkswagen likely to have heavy front end damage. no indication on how long the investigation will run into the rush hour but as we know, as volume builds on bay area roads it will become only more dangerous of a scene if you're heading from st. pete to tampa along the howard frankland bridge, approaching
