savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning. welcome to "today" on this monday morning. and it is a busy one. we want to start with some breaking news overnight. five explosive devices discovered in new jersey near a busy train station. this is just a day after a device exploded here in new york city. and this morning, police are searching this building in elizabeth, new jersey. they say it is in connection wi beginning with nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer. >> reporter: good morning. that fbi activity that you were talking about a short time ago is taking place just a mile away from where we are standing. we can tell you investigators have been there for the past several hours. they're very interested in a local residence there. law enforcement officials tell nbc news they are concerned an active terror cell may be working in this area. suspicious device in this neighborhood after two men say they came across a back pam, opened it up, looked inside and thought they saw a bomb. that's when they notified authorities who cleared this airy, including a local train station. when we arrived, police moved in. then the explosion happened. the overnight blast sent shockwaves through elizabeth, new jersey. police startled, the public rattled, the smell of gunfire in the air. a single devices inside suddenly exploding. hours later, heavily armed fbi agents arrived at this nearby home. officials say all part of their investigation. back at the crime scene, the mayor says the bomb squad accidentally triggered the blast. >> it was not a controlled explosion that occurred when they were cutting in order to make it safe. >> reporter: just before 9:00 p.m. sunday, investigators say two men discovered the backpack in a trash can. few hundred feet outside a neighborhood bar. police shut down the adjacent train station, suspending commuter traffic for hours. the danger to the public soon became clear. only 1 after 5 devices exploded. thankfully, no one hurt. but the blast, powerful enough to kill. >> the loss of life could have been tremendous. >> the people who are doing this, they have no value on human life and it's really difficult to rational. >> reporter: shortly before the explosion, just ten miles away, investigators stopped a vehicle of interest. five people taken in for questioning in connection to the terror investigation. no charges filed yet. the blast in new jersey comes after a powerful explosion in manhattan injuring 29 saturday night. earlier saturday in seaside park, new jersey, an ied exploded along the route of a way. this morning, several law enforcement officials tell nbc news they're concerned an active terror cell with multiple players could now be at work in new york and new jersey. three explosions over the last 48 hours that could have all been deadly. as police continue to sweep this area for bomb fragments, we are told investigators may be looking for similarities like a similar trigger shared between all these meantime, police will step up their presence all across this city. matt and savannah, just a mile away from here, that investigation and fbi presence continues at that residence so close by. back to you guys. >> miguel almaguer, thank you very much. we have several different scenes working here. now to the weekend explosion that rocked a manhattan neighborhood. what investigators are learning about that incident. nbc's richard engel is there. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. bombers on the loose in the new york/tri-state area. but the picture emerging, at least from the incidents this weekend, is of a fairly amateurish attempt to carry out a coordinated attack that, thankfully, mostly went wrong. security has been beefed up across new york this morning with more dogs, more armed guards, 1,000 more state police at new york bus and subway response to the three bombs found or exploded over the weekend. the first one in a new jersey trash can saturday morning, two in manhattan that evening. >> everybody get off of the street! >> get off the street! >> reporter: investigators are now searching for connections and think they have found a key link. the detonators used for all three devices, city officials tell nbc news, were old-style flip cell phones. the similarities suggest that may be responsible. but who, and why? >> a bomb exploding in new york is obviously an act of terrorism. but it's not linked to international terrorism. >> we have a lot more work to do to be able to say what kind of motivation was behind this. >> reporter: biggest explosion hit new york city at 8:30 saturday night on a crowded street with lots of construction. >> i ran outside andaw were scared out of their wits. >> reporter: that bomb blew up in or under a metal dumpster which appears to have contained much of the shrapnel. no one was killed. 29 were injured. all of them treated and released. the second device in new york was found just a few blocks away. it looked like a pressure cooker bomb that didn't go off. new york city officials tell nbc news they have video of someone suitcase and that later two people apparently innocently took the device out of the suitcase, didn't know what it was, left it, and walked off with the suitcase. and the bomb in the trash can in new jersey? it was timed to go off during a charity race to support u.s. marines, but the race was delayed when the small pipe bomb partially exploded harming no one. officials called the race off. >> okay. by need to shut down this run. shut down this >> reporter: in addition to those being questioned by the fbi, there is also apparently surveillance video that may show the same man at the two locations here in new york city where a bomb exploded and the other device was found. matt, savannah, back to you. >> richard engel, thank you. let us turn to nbc's justice correspondent, pete williams. he's been working his sources this morning. pete, let's talk about these five people detained. officials confident or optimistic that they've got someone either involved in this or at least connected to it? >> i'd say agnostic about that. that's up in the air. people captured near the bridge are being questioned now. we are told it is a combination of factors that led to their arrest, including the surveillance video from the new york bombing scenes and the cell phones that were used as timers and power sources in the bombs. obviously the bombers thought those phones would be blown up. but one of the devices in new a park, new jersey did not go off. we're told that police and federal agents have identified another man from that surveillance video, one they are actively searching for right now. >> and we're talking -- or here's hearing this morning about active terror cells operating in new jersey and new york. are law enforcement officials that you are talking about giving you any more information about what they may or may not know about that group? >> well, i think that is a is, they're following a lead. they have reasons they're following the lead. evidence from the phones, the evidence from the surveillance video. whether this is the actual cell, how many people are involved, we don't know. we do know, they tell us that the devices that were found overnight in new jersey are similar to the device that was left in the trash can saturday in seaside park. so there is that connection. and that device, in turn, has, has similarities to the ones in new york. so this is moving really very quickly. >> pete, thank you very much. bill bratton is the former police commissioner for new york city. he retired on friday. we've also got sean henry, former assistant director of the fbi. gentlemen, good morning. commissioner, you just left the job on friday. one presumes you're still pretty plugged in. you are talking about four different incidents. what's your sense of whether what this would mean in terms of a potential terror attack on the city and this area? >> first, since 9/11, this is only the second successful attack. the first was the hatchet attack on a new york city police officer about two years ago. the device that blew up on saturday night that caused 29 injuries would have to be deemed a successful and i believe the use of the term "terrorist" is appropriate in this. i think we have enough information to clearly indicate it was an act of authorities have a lot to work with. these devices did not go off, and as a result they have the ability to move forward very quickly. i think you will see this come to resolution very quickly. >> as you left your post on friday, did your department have under surveillance an individual or individuals that you think they're going back and looking at now in connection with these attacks? >> okay. i won't speak to that. at any given time the joint york -- there is a separate one in new jersey -- those two are working very closely now. what was thought to be two separate unrelated incidents at this juncture, i think there is a strong belief that they are in fact connected. in terms of were the individual or individuals involved in this on the radar, that is part of the investigation moving forward so i can't speak to that, as you might expect. but again, my understanding and sense of this is that we're going to see a lot of movement today on this matter. >> let's go t there are a couple of ways to look at this. you could either say, all right, this was a botched attempt, something that went wrong, an attempted coordinated attack. or perhaps even more disturbingly, you could consider it a dry run. when we should mention, of course, this is the week that world leaders, including president obama, descend on this area. >> yeah. well, we had an explosion on saturday night in manhattan. clearly that wasn't dry. whether these events are forces in new york and new jersey will almost be working as one unit and will be collecting and sharing intelligence across each of those organizations. i think when you look at this investigation going forward, the biggest concern is there are people that are still out there. nypd, one of the greatest counterterrorism units in the world, the fbi working with the joint terrorism task force, there is a lot of evidence in the terrorist explosive device analytic center, they will be able to collect a lot of information from these devices. they've looked at hundreds of thousands of devices in the last 12 years or so. they'll look for signatures and i absolutely believe that they will be able to gather intelligence that will be actionable and lead to some furtherance of this investigation, savannah. >> let me go to commissioner -- former commissioner bratton again. savannah mentioned the timing of this. the u.n., all these dignitaries from around the world descending enforcement officials or agents have been brought to bear here, including national guard troops. are you confident that enough is being done to secure this city during this very challenging week. >> >> oh, sure. this is an event we have a lot of experience with. over the last year, 18 months in new york city we've beefed up counterterrorism capabilities by an additional almost 1,3 m00 officer. the issue here, however, what we've been saying, that it is not a matter of if, it's just a matter of when. and unfortunately, reality of our world today is that these events are probably going to become more common which is unfortunate. but i would point out that the second device was discovered by a woman who reported it. see something, say something. we cannot emphasize that enough. don't live in fear, but you have pipe bombs discovered by two, we hear homeless people who actually went, saw the devices and immediately contacted officials. >> so important. thank you both very much. in the wake of both of these incidents or all of these incidents, both presidential candidates are now speaking out about national security. with the election only 50 days away. here is the state of the race. hillary clinton's in philadelphia this morning. she's speaking to young voters at temple university. to meet with several world leaders at the united nations general assembly, including the president of egypt. donald trump also plans to sit down with the egyptian leader today to discuss foreign policy matters. before that, he's holding a rally in florida. this is his third visit to that state in less than two weeks. let us bring in nbc national correspondent peter alexander. he's at trump tower just a few blocks from us here in new york. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt and savannah, good morning to you. debate. but their responses this weekend really offered a real-time point and counterpoint with hillary clinton and donald trump demonstrating very different strategies and styles on issues of national security. after the explosions, a sharp contrast in the candidates' responses. >> just before i got off the plane, a bomb went off in new york. >> reporter: donald trump quick to react, even before new york city police had identified what happened. >> nobody knows going on. but, boy, we are living in a time. we better get very tough, folks. >> reporter: later turning heads with the tone of his tweets expressing warmest regards, best wishes and condolences to the new york bombing victims and their families. hillary clinton's initial response, more measured. >> i think it's always wiser to wait until you have information before making conclusions. urging americans to choose resolve over fear. the nation remains bitterly divided. more people believe clinton would make a better commander in chief, but trump's more trusted on terror. still, he's spending a fierce criticism from another leading republican, robert gates, the former defense secretary under presidents obama and bush. in an op-ed, gates calling on clinton to address her troer trustworthiness deficit with voters but slamming trump arguing he is beyond unfit to be commander in chief. >> robert gates, believe me, i am so much better at what he's doing than he is, you won't even believe it. >> reporter: as trump tries to bury five years of birtherism, his campaign still facing a fallout of a claim that was widely viewed as racist. >> how and when did donald trump conclude that the president was born in the united states? >> you'll have to ask him a that. that's a personal decision. >> reporter: with concerns of lagging enthusiasm for clinton among democrats, president obama >> i will consider it a personal insult, an insult to my legacy if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election! you want to give me a good sendoff? go vote! >> reporter: as president obama tries to unify democrats, there are new rifts this morning among republicans. the rnc chairman, reince priebus, this weekend saying that it is time for donald trump's former primary opponents to come on board and campaign, suggesting they could have trouble ahead of them in future elections if >> yes. our understanding is that the pressure cooker was brought in a suitcase that was left on the street. and then as richard said at this is a nice suitcase, i'm going to take it for myself. reached inside, took out the white garbage bag that contained the pressure cooker bomb, unaware apparently of what they had, put it on the street, walked away with the suitcase. >> and, pete, we had learned this morning about questioning that's going on at a house in new jersey. we heard about people being stopped and questioned -- stopped on the bridge here. does that bear any connection to individual police are now seeking? >> my understanding is it is 100% connected to him, that that location in new jersey that was being searched is the rahami family home. and my understanding is that the people stopped on the bridge are members of his family. that's the best information we have at this point. and in other words, he is key to a lot of this investigative activity. now independently, the explosive devices near the commuter train and it isn't clear to us at this point whether that was additional bombs that someone was planting. you see one of them going off as a robot tried to disable it in that group. whether this was someone trying to pitch a bunch of stuff and get rid of it, or whether this was another bomb that was planted, we just don't know the answer. >> pete williams, obviously a lot of developments. thank you very much. nbc's tom costello is also following this investigation, including these explosive jersey overnight. tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this location i'm at is critical, because this is the location saturday night where they found that unexploded pressure cooker bomb that pete was just mentioning. they believe that suspect was right in the middle of the street and then somebody took the bomb out of the suitcase. the bomb ended up right here. they're also looking at very close similarities between these bombs that were discovered and bombing three and a half years ago. >> reporter: overnight, another explosion in new jersey. after a police robot examined a backpack that appeared to contain pipe bombs left near a train station. the incident coming as investigators are looking into similarities between this weekend's bombings and attempted bombings in new jersey and new york. perhaps the best clues for the nypd were left right in the middle of the street saturday night, an unexploded homemade pressure cooker bomb with an old-fashioned flip phone investigators are closely examining video of someone rolling it down the street inside a suitcase before walking away. likely the same type of bomb that went off just a few blocks away injuring 29. and another that went off in a trash can in new jersey. all three bearing similarities, say experts, to the pressure cooker bombs that went off at the boston marathon in 2013, killing three and injuring 264. bomb could mean the bomber or bombers have left behind a gold mine of evidence -- fingerprints, wires, soldering, the phones and the numbers dialed and received. >> i'd want to be trying to track the bomb components back to the purchase place to where the cell phones were bought or any of the bomb components or any of the explosive materials, track it back as fast as i can. i'd want to accelerate it because the bombers are loose. >> reporter: the bomb that did go off shattered windows and fired shrapnel at cars and one woman struck in the arm with metal, another bleeding heavily. >> we will find whoever did this or whatever group did this and they will be brought to justice. >> reporter: explosives experts say the bomb's design is similar to the instructions al qaeda provides would-en terrorists in its online magazine. though new york officials stress so far there's no known link to international terrorism. this morning, with world leaders gathering in new york for the u.n. general assembly, the city tighter security blanket. more than 1,000 extra officers and national guard troops on duty. >> it's coming here. it is really scary. >> very nerve-racking. but you got to go about your business. what you gonna do? >> reporter: even with the fbi questioning five people this morning after authorities stopped a vehicle of interest crossing a bridge heading into new york, the concern, at least one bomber -- and maybe more -- are still on the loose. >> the bomber is not experienced. they're early in their bomb career. but they have a lot o to kill as of yet. >> reporter: we're back now on 27th street where they found that unexploded bomb. that piece of evidence, along with all the shrapnel and everything collected at the other scenes, has been sent to the fbi lab in quantico, virginia for a thorough analysis. but again, now they are looking for one suspect, at least. >> lot of evidence to work with in this case. tom. thank you very much. let's get a check of the weather now from mr. roker. >> lot of activity here in the radar. few showers in the pacific northwest. some moisture making its way into southern california. we are looking, though, for the heaviest rain to be here in the mid-atlantic coast. a few severe storms from iowa, back through parts of wisconsin with a passing front. sunny and hot and texas and showers linger in the pacific >> that's your latest weather. guys? i tried three different versions, all with the help of "today" nutritionist, joy bauer, who reviewed the rules and created menus to h course. three weeks. photos of every meal i ate. but before we examined the rules of the intermittent fasting diets i followed, a visit with wellness expert dr. denise edwards at the university of south florida. >> you don't have that much weight to lose. >> i love you. >> reporter: week one. the 5:2 diet, eating normally for five days out of the week, fasting for two days. 600 calories," 300 calories each meal. >> reporter: my diet began on a day when i joined friends at a party. >> there's fried chicken. there's more fried chicken. and i get the idea that none of this is going to qualify for 300 calories. >> reporter: but it wasn't just parties that posed a challenge. >> well, good morning. >> reporter: i'm on the road 200 days a year. which means lots of restaurants. >> the kind of things the h benedi benedict, design your own omelet. ham and cheese. all the sort of things that joy says i should not eat. >> reporter: what i could eat based on the diet's criteria -- "today's" nutritionist joy bauer created a meal plan. two hard boiled eggs, slice of tomato and a cup of berries. later on the day on a run at the airport in charlotte -- >> gelato. tacos. tacos. i want to eat a taco. >> i haven't had much to eat. while i haven't been hangry yet, i'm beginning to get a little upset. this is not fun. >> reporter: my 300-calorie meal -- bland broccoli and just a portion of the meat. >> piece of chicken that fits in the palm of my hand. >> reporter: but in the first week i lost -- three pounds. week two, alternate days i ate normally one day, they 600 calories on those days. one of those days i was covering breaking news in milwaukee. my 300 calorie meal -- peanut butter on a rice cake with a banana and a cup of plain greek yogurt. >> it's peanut butter on styrofoam. >> reporter: different day, same meal but a problem as i headed to another city. >> tsa just informed me that this is a liquid and i can't take it on the airplane. race cakes and make my smeared rice cake -- which apparently tsa will allow to go through security. >> reporter: it was during week two, weakness in between assignments. >> and i know that there is a piece of pizza in here. >> reporter: but with a video diary on my every move, will power kicked in. >> i will resist. all temptations not to cheat. so we can see wheth t but trust me, i'm hungry. >> reporter: at the end of week two, total weight loss -- six and a half pounds. week three -- time-restrictive. eat only within an eight-hour period between noon and 8:00 p.m. >> that's my until noon meal. >> reporter: there was, of course, some tormenting from the team i work with. but at the end of the three pounds. >> well, yippy for me. my doctor says what you can't see is what she discovered in the blood and that is lower blood sugar levels. >> he likes amazing. >> give me the pros and cons. >> and there are both. in terms of the pros, you reduced your calories, therefore you lost weight. that's going to happen with any calorie controlled plan. also, kerry was much more mindful of eating. i only gave him small little meals on fasting days so you really experienced your food. you slowed down your chewing. you didn't gobble it and, also, i think it fuels healthier eating because i designed the meals for him so he wasn't eating 600 calories of hot dogs and cookies. >> quickly, the cons. >> there are definite cons. first off, a lot of people end up bingeing on the non-fasting days because you are so proud of yourself. weight loss is not going to happen. we are one nation under god. that black and white, we are one nation indivisible. that republican and democrat, we are all americans. i'd like to punch him in the face. you know what they used to do to guys like that? >> it usually is not the best idea because there are a lot of variations on the internet. so we want you to have the best information so health care provider, that's what you should talk to. >> our first question is when is important question. because previously we would say you shouldn't exercise during pregnancy. but we want you to exercise during pregnancy, but before you start, talk to your health care provider because there are adjustments you need to make, whether it's with the cardiovascular system or your joints. we want you to get through your pregnancy happy and healthy. it also helps to decrease that post-partum weight. >> pregnancy not a time to train for when is it okay to bleach or dye your hair? >> this is a biggie. women, if you think about it, nine months they're like can i do my hair or not? we want women to know that they can do hair treatments. when we think about the chemicals that they are exposed to, they're really not that toxic. there's also that assumption people think it is absorbed by the blood stream. it's not. you can use semi-permanent dyes or henna. or best case scenario, if you're or wait until after the first trimester, which is the first 12 to 13 weeks. >> okay. herary te a here's a big one. when is it okay to have a glass of wine? >> as a health care provider we generally recommend do not take any alcohol during the pregnancy. the reason is we know there is fetal alcohol syndrome which is the most preventable form of mental retardation. if you don't want any risk at all, don't put yourself at women do metabolize alcohol differently. >> we don't know how much would cause fetal alcohol syndrome. >> absolutely. >> when is it okay to take pain medicine and what kind? >> yes. so pain obviously during pregnancy can become an issue. we want to know as a health care provider is it pain that started before? did you have a history of migraine headaches? pregnancy. if it is new and you are masking that pain, that may hide some diseases or conditions during pregnancy. mild pain, we usually recommend for you to take acetaminophen and not ibuprofen because we don't want to affect the baby's kidneys, the amniotic fluid levels. if you are taking narcotics, make sure you do that under the guidance of your health care provider. >> that's some strong stuff. >> can be. >> finally, the question of all -- when is it okay to baby? >> this was your question. you were like when can i go to the hospital. some of the key factors as you get towards that time when you are 40 weeks, which is, again, term, obviously if tu break your bag of water which is a sudden gush of fluid. or maybe sometimes a constant trickle, then go to the hospital and be evaluated. fetal movement. if you find the baby is not moving as much as you like, then you really want to pay close attention to it. provider. bleeding is also a big factor that we want to make sure you aren't bleeding too much. coming close to the end of pregnancy you may have a little bit of spotting. but heavy bleeding, weep want to make sure there is no placental issues. and contractions. five minutes apart or less. >> when in doubt, call the doctor. thank you, doctdoctor. next, nick jonas and the 8:39. nick jonas, already an established pop star. now he is taking on a new talent with a lead role in the new movie, "goat." he plays a college student torn between his frat brothers and his real brother. take a look. >> show me you mean business. >> okay. >> you got to be tougher. >> i know. >> come on. >> nick, good morning. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> this is not "animal house 2016." this is not a comedy at all. this has a lot of dark elements in it. why did you want to do this? >> you know, i can only speak to my experience in making the movie. i didn't have a traditional college experience. what i saw was that when you get a bunch of young men together without any real consequences for their actions, it is kind of a battle to be alpha and be the best and bad things happen in that scenario. my little brother just started college this year. i said look, man, before you decide to pledge to a fraternity i would love for you to see this educational tool, something to say that's the case scenario. >> go in with eyes wide open. >> exactly. >> if you were in college now you would be a 24-year-old freshman. you just had a birthday. >> i did. couple days ago. >> what did you do? >> had a show in phoenix. just wrapped up a tour with demi lovato. did 42 cities in like nine weeks. last show was in l.a. two days ago. i kind of celebrated my birthday there with friends and celebrated with a great tour. >> how about the jonasth chance of reunion?
