Reporter youre absolutely the battalion chief at the scene tells us this building was constructed in the early 1970s before facilities like this one were required to have sprinklers. The fire damage to the building was contained to several fourth floor units. Smoke and water damaged numerous others. First responders worked quickly to get the residents out. This went to a second alarm immediately and lakeland fire department, along with Lakeland Police department, they were actually carrying victims up and down the stairs, as a lot of these people have disabilities. Reporter dozens of people displaced, now staying at an adjacent building. Property records show this building was built in 1971, long before sprinklers were required. Correct. This is a very old building. Unless theres major rehab or construction, that wont come into code. But certainly sprinklers would limit the spread of fire and could reduce a potential of what we saw here today. Reporter fire crews spent the day working with residents, medications and other essentials they needed from their apartments. Right now, its unclear when they will be able to return. A woman living on the second floor praised the building managements response. Im in a good, safe environment. Ive been here at least 12 years, and they take good care of us. So i dont worry. I know no matter what happens, were safe and secure. Reporter authorities have yet to release the name of the person who died, nor the names of those injured, pending notification of next of kin. Also with light winds, we could see frost towards tomorrow morning, except for our immediate coastal locations, being warmed by the bay and the immediate gulf waters. Our coastal locations this degrees. Tonight, were going to be about 2 degrees warmer than these temperatures overnight. Another cold night in store. Right now, we are at 50 in tampa. Overnight temperatures will hour. So by 9 00 p. M. , 46 degrees. Degree mark. Then toward tomorrow morning, degrees. Then temperatures tomorrow will be warmer, topping off in the upper 60s instead of the middle 50s, like we saw today. Satellite and radar picture, not much to show you.
