and according to plant city police, two males were out on the water in a small boat when it capsized. one of those boaters was able to swim to shore and call 911. divers then found that second in town. the mayor and other city leaders are convinced they can keep the rays from moving to tampa. news channel 8 chip osawski and chip, we all know the team is looking to drop the trop. >> that is no secret, the team is certainly exploring its options, looking for a location for a new state of the art stadium. the mayor wants the team management to ask themselves, why can't that new stadium be right here in saint pete? in front of a cheering crowd at the sports bar here in saint petersburg, the mayor kicked off the baseball forever campaign. >> today is the beginning of the campaign to keep the rays here. >> for year, the rays have fought for a new stadium. the prior city administration fought equally as hard to keep that from happening. team to the trop till 2027. >> one of the reasons that i have encouraged this city to kind of dig in its heels over the contract, is i firmly believe that the only reason that this regional asset is still in tampa bay is because of a pretty significant lease agreement they have with the city of saint petersburg. >> reporter: but the current administration has a different approach. >> we are taking the approach we are, because things have changed. we still believe that we -- we firmly believe this area is the best location. we know that if we didn't give them a chance to look around and come to that decision, they were gone. >> reporter: the mayor tells me the team brings a lot to this community. this downtown. and the city's economy as a whole. we don't need to explain that to the owner of this place, mark ferguson. >> this is used by everybody and we employ 120 in the season and 70 in the off-season. it is huge for the commune. it is huge for everybody. they employ more than anybody else in pinellas county, the leave, leaving the downtown area, it definitely has an impact. >> it would have a big impact. we will get them to stay. we will make the best pitch we can. and i believe they will stay right here. >> reporter: the mayor believes downtown saint petersburg is much different than it was 15 years ago. and it will be much different 15 years from now. the area is vibrant. with new residences and businesses. they are literally popping up all over the place. the landscape downtown is clearly much different than it was 15 years ago. if this team were to leave, it would certainly have an effect fan fest at tropicana field. as always, there were plenty of family-friendly activities for everyone to enjoy. we did ask some of the fans at the event what they thought of the possibility of the rays moving out of tampa. >> i would regret if they moved to tampa. but i understand. but we love having them close by. >> as long as it is central and i can get to it in a reasonable amount of time, we will go to where it has to be. >> i believe they should stay here in saint pete. i know the traffic is bad. but if it goes to tampa, we are in worst shape. >> well, fans can catch the season and home opener sunday april 3 against toronto. a two-month-old girl abducted from her south florida home late last night has been found 200 miles away. taraji kemp was found in orlando late this afternoon hours from her home in fort lauderdale. investigators say the baby and her mother were asleep when gunmen broke in and took the child. taraji is now at the hospital in orlando and detectives have not found the kidnappers just yet. they do however have this woman in for questioning, 23-year-old stephanie augustine. and calling her a person of interest in the case. deputies today uncovered a cock fighting ring and when deputies arrived, they found men taking off into the woods. they found dead chickens and weights and a scoreboard. deputies have not made arrests just yet. a man behind bars tonight accused of trying to rob a gas station. hillsborough county deputies say this man 27-year-old joshua thomas was at 39th avenue and state road 60, came in with a mask and armed with a gun and demanded money but ran out without getting cash. not long after that, deputies found him and arrested him. saint petersburg city employee critically injured after struck by a car five weeks ago has passed away from his injuries. 63-year-old steve milleron was struck at the cross walk at the intersection of 2nd avenue north and 5th street. police tell us the driver was turning on a green light. the investigation into that accident continues tonight. coming up, how her car became completely engulfed in flames. and an e cigarette is being blamed for that. and the python challenge hunt is going on. >> winter is packing its bags, moving out. we are seeing more spring-like temperatures move in. we will have the seven-day let me show you some crazy scary video out of naples. a car destroyed by a fire and a woman is in the hospital with severe burns. all because of an exploding e cigarette. take a look at this. this dramatic video shows the car completely engulfed in flames and the woman her sparked side. >> and when the woman lost two teeth, as you saw in that video and is now on a liquid diet. she has hired an attorney to sue the e cigarette manufacturer. florida fish and wildlife officials announced the winners of the month long python challenge hunt today and a man from the bay area grabbed the top prize. the captain, bill booth of bradenton, captured 33 pythons and the longest python, 15 feet earned him another $3,000. and the burmese pythonses were removed from the everglades ecosystem during the hunt. and brian has a look at the weekend forecast coming up. and giving away care kits to the homeless. this is a great story. they include basic necessity, toothpaste, socks and blankets. and the event was held at the salvation army shelter in tampa where they were very grateful for the team's charity. >> to have some kids at this age to feel how important this is, to give to the homeless, to give to those who are in need in our community, it warms our gulf waters keeping pinellas county and tampa right now in the lower to middle 50s. sarasota, you are at 49. but head north, some of the low- lying locations, and citrus, hernando county, they are already in the 30s right now. even a few spotty locations inland, you might wake up to a bit of frost tomorrow morning on your windshield or your grass. heading off to church early in the morning. keep that in mind, a little frosty to start the day. so kind of cool temperatures to start the day. the temperatures right around 45 degrees. in tampa. so it is going to be a chilly one tomorrow morning. we are looking at temperatures again, dropping down to the 40s. and the 30s. here is a look at your eight- day forecast. well, time to say goodbye to the 60s. and we are going to be in the 70s for the next eight days. kind of hovering right around our average high of 74. so winter is packing its bags and starting to move out. and signs of spring are right around the corner. in fact, spring starts march 20. and we are going to see temperatures gradually increasing, as we head through the next couple of weeks. sat loit and radar picture -- satellite and radar picture, clear skies across the tampa bay area. a beautiful evening. great evening to star watch. high pressure to the north is the main weather feature. we are getting winds out of the north right now. the high. as the high moves to the atlantic ocean, we will tap into more of a southerly wind. which is a warmer wind. that's why we are going to see temperatures again gradually continue to increase. today, middle 60s. tomorrow, right around 71. monday. so tomorrow morning, sunshine. it is going to be chilly. temperatures in the upper 30s but lower 40s. and kind of one of the last really cold nights we will have. and tomorrow afternoon, beautiful day. lots of sunshine. degrees. and so really feeling nice tomorrow afternoon. partly cloudy skies. and a high near 74. and not only is that high bringing us some warmer temperatures, but it is also going to block any cool front from making their way into the tampa bay area, and this front to our north will stall out and be blocked by this area of high so tomorrow morning, a cold start to the morning. 45 degrees in tampa. and 30s north. day. a lot of sunshine. and high temperature near 71 degrees. and it is that time of the year, spring training. u. t. versus the phillies tomorrow 1:05 with a time. so great weather to bring in some spring training and this right here is the reason we do spring training in florida. we are looking at temperatures in the 70s. as we finish up february. and ring in march. it looks like march is going to be coming in like, not like a lion, more like a lamb, i would say. or maybe a poodle. because we will have
