Caribbean. It is the fearest caribbean storm in a decade. It ripped into haiti. Torrential rain and wind pounded villages. Three deaths have been blamed on the storm so far. Meteorologist steve jerve joins us live in the forecast center with the latest track. We are continuing to warn people tonight. Absolutely. In fact, jen, there is is a hurricane watch in place for the east t, cocoa beach. That is in the east coast not includeing the bay area. But in the next 48 hours there could be Hurricane Force wind gusts on floridas east coast. We have hurricane warnings in place. Haiti got pounded. The eastern part of cuba. That initial position east of guantanamo bay, about 65 miles. You see the forecast track taking it as a category 4. Potentially down to a category 3, but still, a major hurricane. You can see the window of it does include polk county. Highlands county. This is is a cone of air. Whatever you want to call it. Over time, there is error in the forecast, it can change either west or east depending on the fluxuation of the path itself. It should be in a trough in the northeast section of the country and central part of the country moving the storm off to the northeast. But we have to watch the position. We are on the weaker side of the storm in this scenario. Theres a look at image. Where we are relative to the state of florida. In the eastern tip of cuba, it continues on the northerly path. Storm surge a little bit on the coast of cuba. But most of it on the eastern side as i mentioned. That is the most dangerous side of the storm away from us in the scenario. Tropical storm wind gusts, 39 to 73 miles an hour possible over the next several days. You can see as it moves up the coastal areas, this is the european computer model that shows a landfall. The official forecast track floridass coast where the high seas will be located. For us, the larger inland areas will be the greater impacts from this storm. Back to you. All right, thank you very much steve. One place they are keeping a close eye on the storms is in polk county. They are on the edge of the cone of uncertainty. Newschannel8s Candace Mccowan stopped by the Emergency Operation center where they are concerned a small shift in the storm could make difference. Reporter for polk county management director pete, it is easier to prepare if he knows whether or not his county will be hit by a storm. Right now, he is in limbo waiting and watching. With this kind of a storm, we are really on the edge. It could go either way. We need to make sure we dont go overboard and get people overprepared. Reporter but for the people in polk county in 2004, there is no such thing as overprepared. Forget hurricane charlie. The storm took a detour from its predicted path. You couldnt get into my house because of all the trees that had fallen down our drive. Reporter for that ran, even without anticipated Hurricane Force winds from matthew, they say they are ready. Before each flight, the scientists are briefed on the exact details of the mission. Then it enters the storm environment where we will circumnavigate it. It comes out of the aircraft at this point, measures temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind speed and it gives a lot of information to the scientists on board the aircraft hoping to predict the path of the storm. Haiti is forecasted to receive up to 40 inches of rain which could easily create flash floods and mud slides. Well, it is a smelly mess in palm harbor where a ruptured line is allowing thousands of gallons of raw sewage to gush into a neighborhood and there is no end in sight. Newschannel8s Peter Bernard isn and im wondering, peter, is there anything estimate on when this will be fixed . Im sure residents certainly want to know. Reporter they want it sooner rather than later. Most likely some time tomorrow. They have to figure out what went wrong. Im deep into the enniswood neighborhood right now. You can see a little barricade up. There is a sign warning people to stay away from the water. There was quite a flow out here when we were here about an hour ago. It has been reduced to a trickle. Utility crews are have to that could take time. Raw sewage will continue to flow from a pump station. I flew drone 8 over the enniswood neighborhood where sewage is flowing behind several houses. Utility crews noticed the break around 7 45 this morning. It is running out of the area at a rate of a thousand gallons per minute. As of late this afternoon, it totaled about a quarter million gallons of that stinky potentially health threatening sewage. A 30inch force main is busted so they are asking bathing, toilet flushing and washing dishes. Ask anyone who lives around here about the smell and you will hear all about it. Oh yeah. Uh, i mean, how could you not smell it . I mean, the wind was blowing and it came into my front door real strong. And, so, i went down do the marina to get away from the odor and have lunch. Reporter and back out here just upstream taking it away. And what is not being taken away is being taken to a storm water retention pond across the street. Earlier today, we saw crews handing out these flyers here. They are putting them on doorknobs. They have made reverse 911 calls telling people about what is going on again, there is no estimate how long this will take. They will work all ni a 12yearold student is being charged in a creepy clown threat. Janna jones shows us how they are dealing with it. Reporter the sheriff says they are taking this threat very seriously. They learned about it at 10 00 last night and they arrested that 12yearold boy this afternoon, just before 3 00. He is now facing Second Degree felony charges. A sixth grader at Seven Springs middle School Posted a clown threat last night on an app called musically. It said hello. Springs middle school on friday the seventh of october, 2016. Get ready sixth graders for your worst day and your last. The 12yearold boy told officers he did it to be funny. Choices have consequences. I mean, you go on there, you try to be funny with your friends and, it starts with something small. Reporter even though tampa is hundreds of miles from haiti, a Bay Area Church is sending prayers, love, and money to an orphanage it sponsors as it is being battered by Hurricane Matthew. Pictures show the children of the orphanage in portauprince during smiles abound. Hurricane matthew walloped haiti throughout the day and the island is still feeling its effects. These kids are facing the storm head on, but a pasco County Church is there to help from hundreds of miles away. Our biggest thing we can do is support them. Often payable through store gift cards. Nancy in Pinellas County writes i received two phone calls today saying i needed to call the irs and not to ignore them. [ phone ringing ] reporter from kenneth, someone called my home several times, stating they are the irs. Starting a lawsuit against me. I called the number several times to request that my number be removed from their calling list. And from peter in tampa, just received my second call. Owed the irs and if i dont call back, i will be arrested. These callers are persistent. But i cant stress enough, the irs will not call taxpayers, use email, or social media, and they would never demand immediate payment. Especially with gift cards. The important part for us, we are on the weak side, could be strong wind gusts late thursday into friday. So, we will watch for that, a potential major hurricane could be just off floridas ohs coast. But keeping in mind, we will be on the dry and also the weaker side with the advancing side. The eastern side with the stronger winds. The trend, the past storm further west. That is why that track has moved a little further west from the National Hurricane center was that can change. We will continue to keep you updated on the latest forecast track and computer models of course. Rain chance tomorrow, 30 . Breezes pick up. It could get fairly windy. The greatest impacts are west of the center of the storm which is good news in that a 10 rain chance saturday, sunday, long term cold front comes through, actually, lower the humidity slightly cooler temperatures monday, tuesday, wednesdays. And then, it looks like we could be very close to the start of dry season which would really change things a lot after dealing with tropical weather. That would be awesome. But we watch that track shift a little bit and it reminds me of 2004. The storms can turn on a dime sometimes. Theres a lot of air in these tracks. We are doing the best we can.
