>> the gun found in the vehicle. >> reporter: and other robbery the previous month had crash into a police cruiser. >> we do not know whether it was deliberate or accidental and two other officers fired shots. >> reporter: this after devon robbed a cvs store and was like. he was also carrying and airsoft gun. bill patman tells me they should have been prevented. so you do not say is that plastic? you respond. >> reporter: he issued a bill to ban the gun after the death of 12-year-old tamir rice who was carrying a bb gun at the time. the bill has been stuck in committee since march 2015. is up for a final push before on until they do something. >> reporter: megan hickey, news 5. we wondered how many states banned airsoft guns. according to the airsoft magazine, 12 states as well as washington dc have some form of restriction on airsoft guns and many on the age of ownership. they say they look like real ones. federal law requires airsoft guns have orange tips, or be transparent. we are keeping a close eye on developments coming out of a cincinnati courtroom where jurors in the ray tensing trial are done in the brain for the day. the judge dismissed them until tomorrow morning. earlier today they said they cannot reach a verdict but she send them right back to continued deliberations and tensing is a former police officer accused of killing sam dubose last year. was shot and tensing testified he feared for his life. three days after the election and tensions are still high among supporters of donald trump and hillary clinton. tonight we're hearing about a third group. the people who simply left the line plane. news 5's james gherardi spend the day learning about this phenomenon. >> to give you some perspective in 2012 3000 cuyahoga county voters left this year there was lower voter turnout overall but more than double 6500 cuyahoga county voters who left the spot on the ballot and t. -- anti-. >> reporter: it is called an empty vote 6% of the entire population of cuyahoga county submitted a blank ballot where that coupled with an overall lower voter turnout compared to 2012 leaves the board of elections to think there were more people protesting this election than ever before. >> that is one option to go in and take a ballot and not vote for any candidates. so basically they are saying they voted and protesting all of the candidates. >> reporter: to top it all up about 30,000 less people voted this year compared to 2012. reported outside i am james gherardi, news 5. new numbers of today show voter turnout hit its lowest point in 20 years. some votes are still being counted but so far 126 million have been telling. that means only 55% of citizens cast ballots. are notable to vote or may not be registered. [ playing "taps" ] a day to pause and remember. >> very grateful to the veterans of this country. >> from coast to coast this country says thank you to the men and women who keep our nation safe. god bless all who serve and still do. and right here at news 5 several of our coworkers probably serve. >> among them leon bibb and today he received a special honor. >> at the joint veterans council he got a special salute as the veteran of the year. he received the honor during the veterans day ceremony this morning and will accepting it he spoke about his wife and his family support and how the military prepared him for life. >> every one of you is special. this long line of men and women who have been serving in the u.s. military ever since the very beginning. >> leon served a full tour of duty in the army during the vietnam war and was awarded the bronze star for his service. we are very proud of him. also today people went out of their way to honor veterans. >> that includes a brunswick grandmother who completed her project she is been working on for two years. local reporter who witnessed what happened. >> reporter: she turned her crochet hobby into something that is making a big impact for some wounded and lonely veterans. >> i brought you a gift. i hope it makes you happy. >> reporter: it is a gift two years in the making. priscilla is handing out 30 of her homewood blanket sure to keep these wounded veterans some cheering up. the va's own study showed one in 10 older veterans is clinically depressed. >> a lot of times you do not know if anybody cares. people forget about you. >> each one is made with love. >> reporter: this is really just one example of all the volunteering that was happening here today. we even had some high school students hijab up youngstown just to spend some time with veterans today. derick waller, news 5. all right. chief meteorologist mark johnson, lay it on us. >> it is chilly outside. look at these temperatures. they are already flirting with 40 degrees with 42 in barberton and a 41 in peninsula and medina wherever you are going, i recommend the winter coats. i have not said that at all this fall. 45 in cleveland and 42 in ashtabula with youngstown down to 4 degrees. we still have one or two isolated sprinkles in lorain county down to ashland county. they should fade quickly with your playoff football forecast. mid-40s at 7:00 and some of you already in the lower 40s inland. some inland areas in the 30s and average temperatures between 35 and 37 degrees. just a big-time chill. do we get any warmer for the weekend? i will have that answer coming up. riding the cartels of the win on tuesday the dow jones just close at a record high today rising 5%. trump's promise to deregulate news 5 has confirmed distraction of the brand-new city kennel. the project was supposed to get started this year but the new kennel has suffered multiple delays since 2013. the city says the most recent delay is because the current bid came in too high. it will not break ground on a new city kennel to the summer of 2017. airline outages affected travelers across the country today. american airlines and jetblue reported system outages today. the glitches were fixed but they had caused delays across the country. it is nothing like the outage delta suffered in august canceling 2000 flights and losing $150 million. coming up on news 5 reunited. a girl goes almost half of her life without seeing her brother, but that all changed today. this marine surprised his sister. we got your emotional reunion. a survivor story. my exclusive interview with amanda berry reveals how she survived years. you are on this veterans day we honor the sacrifices made each and every day. that is the case for a local marine he did not see for six years but that all changed today. news 5's bob jones was there for the touching moment. it never gets old. >> reporter: it is certainly a day a brother and sister will never forget, and it all played out here at barberton high school. a surprise reunion that brought emotion. the entire per person girls basketball team was in on the story under coach. >> undulations on 30 years as the coach. >> it is. most of my life. >> reporter: later did she know the magical moment was about to be all about her. as the girls lined up for a picture, a man in the short stuck in. that is brandon griffith, 15 years in county serving his country as he has not seen his little sister in six years. >> we have a special guest today. it is veterans day. [ applause ] >> reporter: a lot can change from third grade until ninth- grade. >> reporter: today time stood still. there wasn't a dry eye in the gym. >> i was really surprised because i haven't seen him in six years, and i just really missed him. >> reporter: even a marine deployed to iraq was caught off guard by the emotion. >> it was pretty overwhelming. i think that is why my eyes were watering up as well. >> reporter: the siblings have a lot of catching up to do. what a better way to >> i was thinking about him all day today. >> reporter: it took a long time for me to see her and everybody but i'm glad i finally made it. brandon told me also play some golf and basketball with his sister all his home. he currently lives in san diego and expects another deployment next year. he asks all of us to remember those who cannot be home with their families. >> never get tired of seeing those reunions. not at all. some northeast 00 students are giving back to wounded veterans today. >> they work with a group called heroes and halos. they spent today at the hospital playing video games and bingo with men and women who served just to say thank you. the fundraiser is all year to give back disabilities. tonight only on news 5 amanda berry pup a story of survival. 3.5 years after she escaped from are all castro's home. she reveals details about her life and how she survived the decade in captivity. >> i wrote recipes and watched martha stewart. i always watched the cooking channels. >> reporter: amanda and i spoke it wasn't just martha stewart that helped her get through. the local news also played a big role and amanda sheds light on how she is living her life today and raising her daughter, joslin. you can see my exclusive interview tonight on news 5 at 11:00. i think you will see an amazing woman with a positive attitude as she moves forward with her life. >> you told us it was inspiring. >> very inspiring to meet her. just >> and she loves news 5 and you and you. >> she did say she loves mark johnson. that made me question a lot of things about amanda. >> she loves watching news 5.
