else can you tell us about the president's conversation with castro today? >> reporter: well, we got a pretty good idea of what was discussed in that private meeting when the two presidents stood side by side in a rather awkward news conference. at times raul castro avoided answering some questions. he said some things that are getting a lot of attention now, basically denying that there are any political prisoners here, denying there's a human rights issue, and he says despite the progress that's that our countries will always have different views on democracy and human rights. he said really the only way to normalize relations between our two countries is for the trade embargo to be lifted. but president obama said that is something ebels sin evidentable, though he doesn't think the trade embargo will be lifted during his presidency. he feels optimistic the road ahead will be challenging. he thinks there can be progress that will be beneficial both to the cuban and american people. >> mar see, how are people in cuba retook president obama's visit so far? >> reporter: we have seen nothing but genuine excitement about this visit. this is day that many here thought they would never see and everyone that we've spoken to here has said that they are really optimistic about the potential change that this visit could bring. >> mar see, there were protests in cuba yesterday before the members of jailed cuban dissidents and also demonstrations in miami which has our country's largest population of cuban exiles. so not everyone is in favor of this thaw in relations. >> that's right. those protests yesterday were against the castro regime. it's a protest that happens every single sunday here. there are the protests, then there is a lashing out at those protesters, and almost every week, they are taken into police custody for at least a day or two. and so the fact that this happened even ton day that president obama was set to arrive really highlights the issues that those protesters in miami are trying to raise, that these human rights issues continue, that this is an ongoing problem. they point to president obama once saying that he would not ever visit cuba until after the human rights issue was fixed. and so now he's here, an those cuban americans who are out protesting today and who are that this is really a slap in the face that obama is catering to the castro regime, and they feel not doing anything that will really benefit the cuban people. >> marcy gonzales reporting live from havana, thank you very much. right now a else can you tell us about the president's conversation with castro today? >> reporter: well, we got a pretty good idea of what was discussed in that private meeting when the two presidents stood side by side in a rather awkward news conference. at times raul castro avoided answering some questions. he said some things that are getting a lot of attention now, basically denying that there are any political prisoners here, denying there's a human rights issue, and he says despite the progress that's that our countries will always have different views on democracy and human rights. he said really the only way to normalize relations between our two countries is for the trade embargo to be lifted. but president obama said that is something ebels sin evidentable, though he doesn't think the trade embargo will be lifted during his presidency. he feels optimistic the road ahead will be challenging. he thinks there can be progress that will be beneficial both to the cuban and american people. >> mar see, how are people in cuba retook president obama's visit so far? >> reporter: we have seen nothing but genuine excitement about this visit. this is day that many here thought they would never see and everyone that we've spoken to here has said that they are really optimistic about the potential change that this visit could bring. >> mar see, there were protests in cuba yesterday before the members of jailed cuban dissidents and also demonstrations in miami which has our country's largest population of cuban exiles. so not everyone is in favor of this thaw in relations. >> that's right. those protests yesterday were against the castro regime. it's a protest that happens every single sunday here. there are the protests, then there is a lashing out at those protesters, and almost every week, they are taken into police custody for at least a day or two. and so the fact that this happened even ton day that president obama was set to arrive really highlights the issues that those protesters in miami are trying to raise, that these human rights issues continue, that this is an ongoing problem. they point to president obama once saying that he would not ever visit cuba until after the human rights issue was fixed. and so now he's here, an those cuban americans who are out protesting today and who are that this is really a slap in the face that obama is catering to the castro regime, and they feel not doing anything that will really benefit the cuban people. >> marcy gonzales reporting live from havana, thank you very much. right now a
