>> i think there's a lot of guys in camp already trying to fight for that spot but now it's two spots. you went from needing a fourth outfielder, maybe an extra body as a utility guy to maybe a starting outfielder, a fourth outfielder, maybe another utility guy. the window is open for another couple of guys. >> reporter: back to you. >> thank you. it's that time of year, the best films of the year will be awarded tonight at the 88th annual academy awards this. year leonardo di caprio's "the revenant" leads the pack with 12 nominations. other films include "the big short," "spotlight," "room" and "mad mass fury road." it's considered one of the tightest in oscar history. three, maybe four potential best picture winners. it's very rare that you come down to that last envelope and people don't know what is going to happen. >> in the acting categories the focus on leonardo di caprio, whether this role will get the sixth time nominee his first oscar win. he is the heavy favorite to do that. with only room for 10 best picture nominees there's plenty of great films left off the list each year. rich healthenfeld from the akron bikeon journal. >> reporter: when we talk about nominations we're talking 40 films roughly across all feature film categories. far fewer when talking about the major categories. they are chosen from a pool of more than 300 eligible for nomination so right there you may be asking yourself what happened with all the other films? well, some were bad. some were worse. but there are other films quite in the mysterious ways of the motion picture academy to didn't get nominated. you can find independent film spirit awards, five nominees for best feature film. only one is nominated for best picture. oscars. two others nominated in some categories but not best picture. and two not paid attention to at all by the oscars. very fine "beasts of no nation" and "tangerine." two movies would have very much changed the conversation about diversity with the oscars. i talked to friends and looked at films myself. i think of titles that if not utterly oswarworthy were better than some things that did get nominated. and worth your attention. i mentioned "beasts of no nation," "tangerine," eric wasserman, film scholar and historian has been talking about "experimenter," "suffer beach boys very good. and as well as "it follows," "crimson peak." there are other things that are interesting companions. if you liked "the big short" you should see "99 homes" which talks about some of the impact of what was happening in the financial and mortgage crisis. great performance by michael shannon. and you can also find "fastbender." "i'll see you in my dreams," is a lovely romance about people later in life. world seeing and the great sam elliot. and i think where oscar made the mistake, "the end of the tour" is the movie that comes to mind. a two-character piece with jesse eisenburg and jason siegel playing a writer and the guy whether is following him around. i don't know how the academy missed this. it's a wonderful film. i would put siegel in it for a nomination for best actor ahead of at least three of the nominees in that category. i'll leave it to you to argue which three i'm talking about. the fact is film is this great big vibrant thing. sometimes we focus on something like the oscars or even the golden globes, other awards we forget other films merit our attention that may be haven't gotten the buzz of the big movies and yet still will well reward us for seeing them. >> there you go. don't forget newschannel 5 is your home for the oscars. tune in at 7:00. the awards ceremony begins 8:30. followed by newschannel 5 at 11:00 which most likely will not start at 11:00. follow with us on twitter. we'll be live tweeting all night as well. still ahead -- a battle brewing at ohio university. about the plan to demolish a building that ising about on campus more than a century. wild night in east cleveland. three shootings, one deadly. a live update straight ahead.
