concerns of later in the show. meredith: the marion county sheriff' s office is investigating what appears early on, to be a tragic accident. a man learning to hang glide lost his life at marion county' s airport. authorities were called to the airport in dunnellon. wesh 2' s dave mcdaniel has the latest on the investigation into the man' s death. lt. ryan robbins: he was going through a practice run. he was using a power line or some type of winch system to help get him off the ground. dave: the sheriff' s office says 40-year-old tomas banevicius had already done two practice runs on tuesday, when around 6:00, he was being towed in some fashion for his third flight. it went horribly wrong. lt. ryan robbins: once he was up in the air, we believe he was under 100 feet in the air, when the hang glider lost control. we understand it guided to the right, then impacted the ground. dave: the sheriff' s office says the man was dead here at scene. he had started training with this group in new york a few months ago. he was here for another lesson. the sheriff' s office continues to investigate, interviewing the crash. lt. ryan robbins: a tragic accident at this time, is the best way to explain it. no indication at this point that there' s any criminal activity. days: ve: the sheriff' s office says it has not had any other issues with hang gliding at the the u.s. hang gliding inc. s a new york company that operates up north s right, and at the marion county airport in dunnellon in the winter. we called the local number for u.s. hang gliding inc., and were told they would not be commenting, that they have investigating to do. their website says they are closed. in marion county, dave mcdaniel, wesh 2 news. meredith: it' s not clear whether this man was a tourist here, or whether he was a seasonal resident here. summer: a teenager is dead at a shooting in an orlando apartment complex. the 18-year-old was shot and killed last night. apartments. michelle: investigators wanted people to know this was not a random shooting. this began at this complex and then moved over there. this morning, investigators walked across the street from one apartment complex to the next, trying to piece together the sequence of events in this took one man' s life. >> it was kinda scary. it was kinda scary. michelle: scot says from inside his apartment, he heard the shots. >> it just seemed like, boom boom boom boom boom boom. it was like six shots. i was like, and it was loud. i live right here in this building. michelle: investigators say it started around 10:30 tuesday night at the serrano apartments off cypress woods drive near conroy road. according to police, the victims, two men, were parked in a car about here when the gun >> the people who did it, you could tell it was execution style. michelle: this man, who does not want to be identified, says he was a witness, says after the gun shots, he saw two men make a hasty exit in a vehicle. >> jump into it. slam it in reverse. they proceed to take off in the complex. michelle: the witness says he tried save one of the victims who was lying on the ground. >> with a gunshot wound to his chest. he proceeded to go over there and try to help. michelle: he sees the two men, the suspects, drive back through. >> proeceeded on cypress woods and in the meantime, we heard three or more shots more across the street. summer gate condos. police have confirmed that one victim went there to get help. the double shooting has rattled the confidence of folks living in both places. >> yes, scary. i would never think something like that would happen here michelle: orlando police believe that are more witnesses to this shooting. if you have any information, call crime line. meredith: today, hugo terry, the man convicted of killing an orlando police officer, was back in court today. terry is spending life behind bars. convicted for his part in killing officer al gordon. the court is now revisiting that sentence now that a supreme court ruling found anyone under 18-years-old should not be given life sentences. the re-sentencing hearing was pushed off until may 4. summer: turning to touched down in alabama yesterday. take a look. this is a monster tornado, about 45 miles west of tuscaloosa. officials say the storm left a path of destruction with trees and downed powerlines. but fortunately, only minor today clean-up got underway after at least four tornadoes ripped through mississippi. this is video from a small east mississippi town. a pastor was inside the first baptist church when one tornado hit. he says he could hear trees snapping and windows crashing. officials say no one was injured. remember when rain and storms are on the move, just download our mobile app for the latest coverage. meredith: winter park police are looking to see if there' s any connection with recent burglaries of used car dealerships. they' re going three months back including three on west fairbanks, two on january 6, including the minivan store where thieves took a computer, and one just four days ago at liedca auto sales. wesh two' s gail paschall-brown is live on clay street in winter park with details on the latest case. absolutely, and according to police, the bad guys went through a window of the office that held an air-conditioning unit, and stole all of the keys to these vehicles, three cars and some more valuables. so when you got here this morning, what did you see? >> i see that two cars was missing and the most exotic car was parked here. gail: all that' s left are the tread marks of this 2008 bmw m3, which was stolen along with two others, a 2012 bmw and this mercedes benz suv. the high end cars were taken from worldtranssport of winter park on clay street. the owner says the bad guys also took all of the keys to the rest of cars, and he found this key to one of the stolen ones on the ground. >> the worst part is the two cars taken, i sold already, and the man is coming from nashville to pick it up at 3:00 pm, and i called, told him the car was stolen. gail: expensive diagnostic equipment and cash were also taken from his small dealership midnight. just before 2:20, another dealership, vip auto, right here in orange county. there was a ford 250 park right here. we don' t know at this time if the two thefts are connected. >> we got the vehicle from the auction and was only parked a few hours and it' s gone. gail: both dealerships are 20 minutes apart, but the theft at vip was caught on camera. to the left of the screen, you can barley see two people get into the diesel truck. at one point, the thief tried to break the camera with a rake. it took them about seven mintues to get the truck going. they didn' t have a key, and from the looks of things, some issues getting it off the lot. maylee ortega at vip auto says they' re very concerned about all of their fellow dealerships when something like this happens and hopes the burglars are caught the owner cannot even get into the vehicles because the keys are gone. we will have more information later on wesh 2 news. live in winter park, gail paschall-brown, wesh 2 news. meredith: a small plane and brevard county had to make an unusual landing this morning. the pilot and passenger were not hurt. brevard county fire and rescue were called to the scene as precaution. summer: a family of a man killed by an undercover officer is pleading with investigators to mandate all police officers wear body cameras. stewart, this is a man killed on the side of i-95? >> he was shot and killed by the officer while waiting for aaa to deal with his disabled car. his family says it will never know what happened between him and the officer, but they argued if the undercover had been agencies would be required to establish pop of dust proper policies for body cameras and data. state law does not currently require that. >> if there were body cameras, we would all have answers as to how a church drama broke down at 3:00 in the morning in october of last year, was confronted by officers and is dead. >> i will look at legislation as it makes its way to my desk. we are focused on what is the right thing for our sentences. stewart: not sure how much more work at the family has to do to get this bill to be governor' s desk. the officer was fired by the police department and the investigation is ongoing. meredith: u.c.f' s downtown campus could soon receive a financial boost from the city of orlando. a proposal to commit $75,000 -- $75 million next monday. the building will cost a total of $22.5 million. some of that money could come from taxpayers. so how much will this move cost orlando residents? we' ll look into that at 5:00. meredith: a victim' s autopsy has been released, and what else we have learned about the man facing charges for her murder. >> as soon as he took the gun off of me and his eyes off of may, that is when my the project to come up with a vaccine or treatment for the zika virus. meredith: he' s speaking out after news of one confirmed case was transmitted sexually in texas. the cdc had previously thought a mosquito bite was the only way to get the virus, and that it was really only a concern in pregnant women. now, scientists are playing catch up and realizing more that there' s still a lot to learn. >> a typical vaccine can take 10 or more years, but there is a great sense of urgency within our organization. the who has declared an emergency so we need to move as quickly as possible. meredith: zika has been linked to a birth disorder in newborns that results in babies to be born with abnormally small heads. summer: new video shows a huge hole ripping open after an explosion on a plane. this is video from on board the somali jetliner. you can see people are relatively calm. appeared to have been caused by an explosion. at least two people were injured. the flight was over east africa yesterday when it made an emergency landing in somalia after the blast. authorities are investigating the explosion. meredith: we are following breaking news out of cocoa beach. we will have a live shooting in a tax office. sheriff' s office said the started at 1:30 this afternoon in clearlake road. what we know is it all broke out in a tax services office in this one person was shot in the office with multiple gunshot wounds. another person was also shot, by possible debary. -- debris. of all the people that were shot, the shooters were able to get away in a car, and that is where deputies found the injured person, and that person along with the person shot multiple times was flown to a local hospital. pretty serious injuries. the person who was not shot but injured by debris, that person did not require much medical attention. it is still unclear what the circumstances were, who shot who or if there is even a shooter at large. those of the questions we are asking the brevard county sheriff' when we get more details, we expect an update that we will pass along to you. we are live in brevard county. summer: thank you. meredith: jim payne joins us now with the new information released in the case. jim: an autopsy report obtained by wesh 2 this morning, confirms sasha samsudean was strangled to death, inside her downtown apartment. we' ve been working to find out how samsudean was murdered inside her home in october. a security guard at her apartment complex, stephen duxbury, has been indicted on first degree murder charges. he' s being held without bond. prosecutors say he helped the intoxicated woman into her apartment. prosecutors say he then raped he says he did not help her, but surveillance video shows them walking together in several areas in the complex, contradicting his statements to investigators. back to you. summer: two women are seen shoplifting at an orlando walmart, but wait until you see what happened when they made their get away. take a look. this is surveillance video from sunday night at the store on south kirkman road. store security saw the women put merchandise in their purses. workers then closed several exits to corner the women, but when they were confronted, one pulled out a knife, jabbed the knife toward workers and both women ran away. they' re still on the run, so if you recognize either of them, you are asked to call police. meredith: a 23-year-old deland woman died after losing control of her jeep in deltona overnight. investigators say savannah noriega was driving south on providence just before 1:00 this morning when she lost control and slid across the road. she hit a curb and overturned in a yard on giles street. she died at the scene. summer: a local convenience store clerk who went toe-to-toe his story. the crook had no idea he was going up against a combat tested u.s. army veteran. wesh 2' s chris hush spoke with him when he came back to work, >> pulling the oven open to pull out the pastries for that night. put it over here. as soon as i turned around, he was already standing here, coming at me. chris: this man, seen on surveillance video, came in armed with an airsoft gun, looking for cash. but army veteran david dick, the store clerk working that night at the sugar creek gas station store in mims, was ready to fight back. >> i put my hands up, kept my hands calm, right where he could see them. chris: as cameras roll, the armed man forces the clerk to the cash register. dick tells us the crook wanted him to put cash in a bag. but as a trained specialist in the united states army, he says he waited for just the right moment. >> as soon as he took the gun off of me and took his eyes off of me, that' s when my training kicked in. chris: he overpowers the seemingly amateur thief. blow to his face, and seconds later, another punch as the robber tries to bail. >> i wanted to do damage. i' m not going to lie. i wanted to do damage to him. the last punch, his face kind of felt like mush. chris: the clerk says he tried to shoot the airsoft gun, but it was jammed. he chases the man out, where dick says a getaway driver was waiting. the robber got away, but most likely in bad shape. this week, the brevard county sheriff' s office applauded the army vet for defending himself. so do his co-workers, who had just left that night before he was attacked. deputies are still looking for the suspect. anyone with information should call crimeline. meredith: palm bay police say they' ve caught a pair of purse thieves. police say they arrested cristie cook and johnny cook. last week, they posted this picture of their suspects, who took a purse from the photo counter at the walmart on shopping cart under some other items and walked out. summer: it is a inside it just a couple minutes. meredith: in commitment 2016, two more republican candidates dropped out of the race for president. rick santorum and senator rand paul suspended their campaigns. today, paul said he wants re-election to the senate in kentucky. no word what santorum' s political future holds. santorum and paul join republican mike huckabee and democrat martin o' malley in dropping out of the running this week. that leaves just 11 candidates . bernie sanders and hillary clinton on the democratic side, but there are still nine summer: the florida legislature s congressional maps. the supreme court approved a new map last month that will result in changes to the state' s political landscape. a senate spokesperson says they see no reason for the legislature to defend the court ruling. congresswoman corrine brown filed the lawsuit, saying the new map takes a large portion of african american voters out of her district. some quick thinking boy scouts in florida are being called heroes they saved the lives of two boaters in big trouble. investigators say a boy and his father took their boat out for a ride on the manatee river last saturday. they hit something in the water and flipped over. a scout troop was camping nearby and heard their screams for help. two of the scouts jumped into a canoe and went to rescue them. >> all that first aid training i have taken as a boy scout growing up in the troop. >> so you feel it came in handy at that time? >> oh yes, it did, very handy because otherwise i wouldn' t have known what to do. summer: the victims were rushed to the hospital. meredith: daytona police broke up a gathering of homeless people, but they will now receive a big cash gift with hopes of a long-term solution. claire: city commissioners have dealt with little but the homeless crisis lately, an issue that is costing taxpayers between $5500 and $6000 a week. >> i think it painted a picture of our community that isn' t, that we' re not used to. claire: former daytona beach mayor glenn ritchey was moved like many others when 100 plus homeless people camped out in front of a downtown building for more than a month, and as city and county leaders argued over how to deal with it, ritchey and other big business owners, quietly raised $100,000 to meet the needs of the homeless right now. >> it was good to handle the situation immediately with the hopes that the city and the county can sit down working together, create a long term goal. claire: the homeless have been removed from downtown, many now sheltered at the salvation army additional staff, additional funds and of course, there are still homeless living on the streets. the $100,000 and another $10,000 from the lodging and hospitality association, will be specifically set aside for food, shelter, transportation. as disturbing as the very public display of homelessness was for the city, some think it finally moved many to act. >> it ignited everything. now people are working together, they' re talking communications. city and county are meeting and hopefully we' ll stop pointing fingers and solve the problem. claire: the check presentations will be made during tonight's city commission meeting, and the issue of homelessness is again expected to be a hot topic for city leaders and the public. in daytona beach, volusia county, claire metz, wesh 2 news. meredith: the city of daytona beach is still hoping to partner with the county on a proposed permanent shelter to be built west of this city, but the project is not on the drawing board. summer: two women are shot in a meredith: one used facebook to call for help. summer: using an atm may be a thing of the past. a quick look at traffic, the situation on i-4, and where shopping meredith: a woman streams on facebook after she and another woman were shot at a opa-locka drive thru. the women were at a burger king yesterday morning, and say they were targeted. two women who were shot are ok. surveillance video at the restaurant shows two men in red hoodies, firing shots. one of the victims says she recognized the shooter. meredith: one of the anti-abortion activists who was indicted for making undercover planned parenthood videos, turned herself in to police. sandra merritt appeared in a houston courtroom today on charges of tampering with a governmental record. these videos alleged planned parenthood illegally sold fetal tissue for profit. the other person indicted is authorities tomorrow. summer: the way you bank is about to change. soon you might not need a card to use an atm. banks are using new technology to update how customers can get their cash. wesh 2 anchor michelle imperato explains. michelle: we' ve got smartphones, smart homes and smart watches. now, your atm is getting smarter, too. >> we view this as much broader than a cash dispenser. michelle: j.p. morgan chase, bank of america and citigroup are all working to make mobile friendly machines. later this year, chase is launching the new e-atm. you won' t even need a card to use it. just log into the bank' s app, find the seven digit code, and type it into any chase atm in your vicinity. another new feature, the ability to withdraw three times more money and in more denominations. customers will soon be able to take out up to $3,000 in one dollar bills if they' d like. by the end of next year, they' ll be able to pay their mortgage and credit card bills standing >> we do all this because our customers are asking for this. they want to be able to sharing cars today. zipcar has cars in 500 cities and on 500 college campuses including ucf and rollins. there are now six in orlando, four at disney springs, and two in winter park. the cars allow you to pay with a credit card and use for as little as one hour, which the company says, appeals to millennials and retirees >> that' s the baby boomers that are retired. the children have moved out of their big properties in the suburbs, and it' s just too much for them to keep up with so those folks are now selling, down-sizing, getting rid of their car and moving to cities and now they are
