In the summer of 2013, it was mayhem as police and deputies were investigating shootings into cars, into homes, and these two murders. Today, here at the courthouse, Konrad Schafer admitted to all of those crimes. Are you entering these pleas of guilty because you are in fact guilty of the crimes you have been accused of . Yes your honor reporter Konrad Schafer finally spoke the words that Pooran Roopnarine waited two and a half years to hear, the teenager admitting that he is responsible for the brutal executionstyle murder of 22yearold eric roopnarine. The state says, schafer and three others conspired to rob and fatally shoot and stab eric inside his poinciana home. Age 18 now, schafer was just 15 when he was arrested. He pleaded guilty to killing roopnarine and, a week earlier, 17yearold David Guerrero of kissimmee. He ll have to serve a minimum mandatory 25 years, and up to it s just hard for me to say anything right now. Reporter roopnarine s father was too upset to talk, but prosecutor jeff ashton said he ll fight for life sentences, noting schafer was the mastermind behind a spree of 20 shootings in summer 2013, as well as the killings. When you have two murders as brutal and completely senseless as these were, i just think that those are the sentences we ought to be arguing for but ultimately it ll be up to judge morgan. Reporter schafer will be sentenced april 15th. As for the codefendants in this case, david damus was convicted and sentenced to life last year, victoria rios is facing trial in march, and juan muriel who cut a deal with the state will be sentenced february 4th. Also, schafer s father is serving probation for providing the gun, to his son. Anchor a wild scene in pine hills. Ended deputies say, with a fleeing suspect. A two block area of busy roadway was shut down for two hours. Wesh 2 s bob kealing was first on the scene and bob you spoke to the witness who deputies say fired multiple shots. Reporter deputies say he confronted the suspect and fired streets right along this stretch of deauville street, they say as he ran a way into this residential area, they say the witness fired at him, but at this point, they believe it was all selfdefense. Do you feel you were doing the right thing . No comment. Reporter Orange County deputies say this still unidentified man, witnessed a hit and run driver slam his pickup in to multiple cars on pine hills road injuring two people, then take off on foot. He followed in his durango deputies say got out, and confronted the suspect. That s when the suspect ran to the man s durango got in and he probably went a little he almost became a victim himself. He could have been seriously hurt, even more so if the guy had been armed. Reporter when the suspect locked himself in the man s durango, deputies say he pulled out a gun and shot out his own front tire. The suspect got out and ran off down deauville street, deputies say the witness fired another shot and missed. The suspect was caught a couple of blocks away. Kurt harshman lives in the line of fire but says he has no problem with what the witness the guy s trying to do the right thing. Well i hope they don t charge him. I think he s ok. Reporter at this point, deputies say it appears no charges will be filed against who fired two shots. The information we have leads us to believe it s a self defense issue. Reporter a two block stretch of pine hills road was closed down it is reopened. The suspect was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and allegedly admitted his role in these incidents. Authorities say Joaquin Guzman was apprehended after a shootout with Mexican Marines in a town in his home state of sinaloa, mexico. Five suspects were killed in the gunfire. Reporter 24yearold Zachary Penna listened to the charges against him while sitting in a wheelchair in a jail courtroom. It was a month and a half ago that he was gunned down by police after they say he stabbed a Titusville Airport worker and a police dog. He had to recover from three gunshot wounds before he could be taken to jail. At the time, police said even those shots didn t stop him. He would not stop. The bullets did not stop him. He was still aggressive. He had to be subdued again with Reporter Police say penna was on the run from palm beach county, where two men had been stabbed to death the night before. A report just released today reveals Police Believe penna was trying to steal an airport worker s van. The report says penna took the man s keys, but then stabbed him anyway. And when the victim tried to run away, the defendant chased the victim and stabbed the victim at least one more time. The victim was able to run away from the defendant leaving a trail of blood. This just seems to be one of those random crimes of violence that unfortunately occurs too often. Reporter a Police Officer saved the victim s life with a tourniquet. The report says penna tried to hide in the woods, but when jack the police dog flushed him out, penna stabbed the dog, and then came at officers while not wearing any pants or underwear. That s when he was shot. Now that penna has moved from a hospital bed to a jail bunk, he s being held without bail. He may be tried here for attempted murder of a Police Officer, before potentially facing a murder trial in south florida.
