has given confession. chris: dunnellon police chief mike mcquaig says 69-year-old sharon gane confessed to transferring funds from the church' s bank into her personal account multiple times and even forging checks to make the transfers. but the chief says the church volunteer has yet to explain what she used the funds for. when we went to gane' s home to ask her in person, we could hear people inside, but no one answered the door. mike mcquaig: the whole community becomes a victim just about, because you' re affecting the ladies who need this type of money to have their exams and the people who donated it. chris: police say the money was used by the michelle-o-gram charity to assist many local women with breast cancer screenings and referrals to doctors. according to the charity' website, first united methodist church of dunnellon writes checks and does bookkeeping for the charity. gane, who police say was in charge of this bank account, was arrested for grand theft and forgery but has already bailed out of jail. as of wednesday night, the church declined to comment. mike mcquaig: this is going to be corrected at the church and will not happen again. chris: the chief tells me the church now requires two signatures on the checks and has also implemented a checkout system for the check book. we are also told that private donors have helped to replenish the account. however, investigators are still going over bank account information, and more charges could be on the way. jim: new tonight, sanford police joined members of the community, working to make the streets safer. this is all in response to several recent killings which have not been solved. members of the police department joined local pastors at second shiloh missionary baptist church. the police chief says he' s looking at this summer and cecil smith: we have a couple of different initiatives that we are working with through the church and also the city. it is important for young an orange county sheriff' s deputy has been charged as an adult. jancarlos ortiz is facing several charges including attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer. sergeant marcy pearce says ortiz hopped into a car and rammed into a car and rammed into her when she tried to arrest him on burglary charges last month. jim: a wild story out of volusia county, and new tonight, we' re talking to the hero who helped save a man' s life. deputies tell us an 18-year-old carjacked a woman in traffic with her dog still inside her suv. he then crashed and the suv went up in flames. >> i pulled the dashboard off and he was laying right there in the back behind the seats, so i reached out and grabbed him by his arms and pulled him away from the car. as soon as his feet cleared the car, the fire went white through it. jim: scott archey walked us through his life-saving efforts. say andre pomerleau got into a woman' s car while she was stopped at a light near deland early this a golden retriever named kenzie, was able to run to a nearby home. he was reunited with his owner hours later. meredith: right now, two local religious leaders are facing charges in a child sex-abuse scandal in pennsylvania . investigators said giles schinelli, robert d' aversa, and anthony criscitelli allowed a friar to molest more than 100 kids over several years. schinelli is pastoral administrator of the san pedro center in winter park. d' aversa is a pastor of st. patrick catholic community church in mount dora. and cristicelli is the head of a catholic parish in minnesota. they' re accused of reassigning a priest with a history of sex abuse complaints to another parish with access to children. himself in 2013, officials suspect reverend stephen baker of abusing 90 or more victims. >> allowing the voice of the victims to finally be heard, to let them know that we are on their side, that they are safe. meredith: the church has paid millions of dollars to settle suits filed by baker' s accusers. jim: one day after a firestorm that destroyed a central florida landmark, firefighters are still putting out hot spots and a major highway is just reopening. the fire at the al neuharth home in cocoa beach has disappeared in an unforgettable ball of flames. it almost seems there' s not enough water in all of cocoa beach to put out what' s left of the 10,000 square-foot pumpkin center. chopper 2 shows the landmark estate mostly a wasteland of blackened ground, with literally nothing but ashes in place of its 11 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. frank vega: the thing was an old, wooden, kind of a hunting lodge. and so there was, you know wood the house, huge decks. that obviously contributed to what happened. fire chief: it means a lot to me personally, to all of us in cocoa beach especially the , residents. we' re just hoping to get some really adequate information that helps answer some hard questions. jim: investigators are looking into new renovations going on at the estate and whether anyone who wasn' t supposed to be there was on the property. meredith: the search is on for a woman in brevard county making purchases while using some bogus bills. rockledge police are trying to find the person on your screen. they say the woman gave a worker $100 bill at a cvs along fiske boulevard. when the worker questioned her about the bill, the woman ran away. she' s then accused of using a bogus $100 bill to buy some things at a nearby supercuts. in both cases, she was seen carrying a large gray purse with tassels and wearing sunglasses. clermont police say they' re no longer looking for the person accused of posing as a police officer because he was a trooper. we reported this story earlier in the week of a woman who had concerns about the legitimacy of speeding sunday in lake county. she was given a warning, but she questioned whether the man was legit. police first said the stop was never called in so they questioned it as well, but now it appears an fhp trooper made the stop but never called it in. still ahead, crime connection. jim: two businesses robbed in orlando, and the crimes are being committed by the same dangerous a duo. meredith: parent takes matters into his own hands to catch drivers speeding by school buses and robbing kids. jim: it may look like a joke, but there -- this woman says there is nothing funny about her not being able to keep her pet alligator. why she is being told no. tony: and today, in sanford we hit 90 for the first time. over the next few days, rain and ll talk about meredith: the search is on for two men, accused of robbing back-to-back businesses in orange county in just a matter of hours. jim: the first happened on mercy drive, the second near the mall away. wesh 2' s dave mcdaniel looks at why detectives believe the crimes are connected. dave: the security camera shows the man with the gun, demanding cash at the mercy market around noon monday. the owner grabs her own smith and wesson 38, telling him, "i have a gun, get out of here." then police say she "fired a single shot at the suspect. the shot missed, but it made him take off, jumping into a blue minivan heading south." more than three hours later, at this subway on millenia boulevard, a guy in a green shirt is the first in the door. a very similar looking guy to the suspect in the mercy market robbery is there as well. a worker there says they "pulled a gun on him and ordered him to open the cash register, eventually grabbing the drawer and pulling out all the bills." brian ferarra: that second gentleman on the subway you see come in wearing all black and with the black hat he appears to , be the same gentlemen from the mercy mart. dave: and in both robberies, the getaway car was a blue minivan. brian ferrara: the chances of having two armed robberies to commercial establishments in descriptions, to us it just tells us that there pretty much going to be linked. dave: they want everybody to look carefully at both videos, the facial features, the way the men walk and carry themselves. police say video security can play such an important role. in solving cases like this. it is important that anyone that has a system to make sure it works and know how to use it. and police suggest you need to be a good witness get a good , look at faces getaway cars, which way the suspects took off. and don' t challenge armed suspects. battle them by being able to identify them. in orlando, orange county, dave mcdaniel, wesh 2 news. meredith: more than 70 people are taken to the hospital after an accident between two school buses and a tractor-trailer in the panhandle this morning. it happened when the tractor-trailer rear ended a schoolbus which then slammed , into another bus. you can see just how bad the damage was to all the vehicles involved. no one was seriously hurt. the crash is still under investigation, but police don' t believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident. it' s video that may upset some a local father has been taking cell-phone videos of cars, racing past school buses as they drop off kids. chad cartledge says he became angry after seeing so many cars violate the law and put kids' lives in danger. in some of the videos, you can clearly see cars grow impatient, that' s illegal according to state law. >> if those lights are blinking you stop, and don' t honk at me these children' s lives are important, and i am not going to risk being late for work at the expense of the possible life of a child. meredith: chad' s video was posted on the facebook page for the orange county sheriff' s office and got thousands of hits. and today, deputies were in the area giving tickets to anyone trying to do the same thing. jim: this didn' t cause any major problems but it was sure fun to , watch for a few minutes. this water main broke late this morning near cincinnati. utility officials aren' t quite sure what
