tomorrow is the last day for candidates to file as independents in the race for roanoke's next mayor. so far, no one has announced a challenge to now democratic nominee and current councilman sherman lea. the reverend and consultant beat doctor david trinkle in the democratic primary. with no other candidates challenging him, he could run unapposed. yesterday on wdbj7 sunday morning, anchor chris hurst asked lea if that was good for voters. chris hurst: do you wish there was more competition in the process, more voices out there through may? through the election? sherman lea, candidate for roanoke mayor: well i feel like there are voices out there anyway. i feel like there have been on city council, i think most people know the things that i stand for and have done. we going forward regardless of who the other candidate may be. lea said he was happy to have trinkle's endorsement after the primary and despite long wait times, he was happy to see such a large turnout. community activist martin jeffrey has been considering a run as an independent but as of now he has not declared. we want to make sure your monday morning communte is a smooth one. we'll have your i- hometown traffic report, after the break. ladies, today is your day to get down on one knee. it's a leap day tradition you'll for. flooding is a problem on one giles county road. you can't drive on bear springs road from kirk cemetery road to eggleston road. the valley view interchange project will likely cause one northbound lane of i-581 will close near the mall exit at eight and a second lane will close at 10. the mall exit will be blocked from midnight to two tomorrow morning. bridge work could slow you down on route 58 in pittsylvania county. the eastbound right lane is closed near pounds road until saint patrick's day. we're taking a live look at i-81 in christiansburg from a virginia department of transportation camera. traffic is moving right along there and most places this on your calendar just yet. it's leap day wdbj7's new morning reporter neesey payne has been teaching us about leap day this morning. good morning, neesey. good morning. leap day was put in place to keep our calendar running smoothly. but there's more to it than just that. here's some fun facts you might not know about. take a look. there are a lot of traditions and superstitions that come along with leap day. like the old irish legend that st. brigid complained to st. patrick about women men to propose the two struck a deal. so ladies, if you liked wanted to put a ring on it, february 29th was your day to pop the big question. and if your man refused, he was fined! take that for saying no! some big moments in history also day. in 1692, the first arrests were made in the salem witch trials. in 1940, hattie mcdaniel became honored with an oscar. she won the best supporting actress award for her role as mammy in the classic movie "gone with the wind." and fast forward to 1972. hank aaron signed a recrod- breaking three-year contract with the atlanta braves. aaron would be paid 200-thousand dollars per year under the contract -- making him the highest paid major league baseball player at that time. now, the odds of being born on leap day are 1 in 1,461. but if you're lucky enough to have come into this world on february 29th, you also share a birthday with a few names you might know, like motivational speaker tony robbins, singer dinah shore, and rapper ja rule. since leap day only comes around about every four years, the questions is, should you celebrate your birthday on february 28th or march 1st? the answer: it's all up to you. a lot of really neat of that stuff? camping in the iwnter probably camping in the iwnter probably doesn't sound like such a great idea. but there is a way to enjoy the great outdoors, even in the colder months. and, how a non- profit group in our disabilities. planarea and warm weekend and all i can think about this of get in appomattox county we got us are moving photos sent to us i this is twelve-year-old sarah holds assess sitting in a broken chair there pretty much on the ground and no looking at the home that cell was lost her hours but again not everybody gets wet some of this will fall apart as a moves through a mild start to your day now fifty six and roanoke fifty in danville where forty seven in lynchburg forty seven degrees and hot springs but it has been very, very windy those gusts up to 40 mi./h at times across hot springs very breezy thirty mile-per-hour wind gusts there and bluefield now we can tell you that the winds will start to relax later on today once that system moves through here once the rain chances drop-off and of by mid to late morning will start to clear out later on in the afternoon that's warm-up the low sixties the beautiful day in store for us and in once a look ahead to the seventy forecast sue got one more warm day tomorrow and will start to cool things down on wednesday with temperatures dropping into the 50s through the day the next shower chance coming when it comes to exploring your hometown, sometimes you have to challenge yourself. during the winter time it can be hard to get outside but there are definite advantages. in this week's your hometown, we tell you why winter camping is a good thing and how to make it a successful trip. i'm going to interject an idea here--winter camping. it may seem crazy but there's a lot of people that take advantage of it. my favorite part about camping in the winter is the....the lack of campsites is the biggest. not many people go winter camping around here. the other would be the lack of bugs, spiders, arachnids, snakes and all those creepy crawling things i'm sold. pat metheny from backcountry ski and sport says there's three keys to a good winter overnight backpacking trip. first, you have to have the right gear. keeping your feet warm and dry is huge. it's probably the most imporant. i think marino wool socks does the best job of keeping your foot warm and it tends to get a little bit wet it wicks moisture off your feet remember cotton is your enemy. bring long johns and don't forget a hat--one to hike with and a dry one to sleep with. with winter camping you only have a limited amount of daylight number 2, you need to have good shelter. here in southwest virginia a good 2 or 3 season tent will do. this time of year you're going to have the rain fly on. it tends to add a little bit of insulation. then there's staying warm at night and when it's wet and cold that can be hard but it's not impossible. sleeping bag in the world, without a ground pad you're still going to end up being cold at night. i'll wake up cold if i roll of my sleeping bag at night. you feel like you rolled on to a cold bed of ice. a little bit of insulation pad goes a long way. last but not least you have to stay hydrated. your body just works better when you're hydrated. your muscles works better, your brain works better. you make better decisions throughout the day. so this winter not only go on a hike but stay out there for a night. less people, less bugs and less heat equals seeing more of your hometown. it looks wet and damp and it really was on that day so maybe pick your spots when you're looking to go over night. but the weather doesn't wait on your weekend so sometimes you just have to go but kim, it is amazing how when you go out this time of year that there really isn't a lot of people out. better. katie's place is a non-profit organization that teaches life skills to adults with
