not think of doing in the winter--an overnight backpacking trip with some good ole fashion winter camping. i know you may be thinking, sleep outside when it's cold, no thank you! but how about a more positive spin on it--it's more like you get to enjoy the outdoors with less people, less bugs and less heat. you have to focus on three things. first as far as water goes, it's easier in the winter. the natural water sources have more water in it this time of year so you can bring less and find a filter or chemical treatment to use for the natural water. and when you found a nice spot to stay the night, the key to staying warm while you're sleeping is making sure your sleeping bag off the have a pad and you have to make sure you have the right gear. cotton is your enemy, wool socks are the best and having layers is key. 09:59:39 in the summer time there's only so many things you can do to cool off and there's only so many clothes that you can take off. in the winter time you can point more on to stay warm. you can always shed layers to stay cool in the winter and always add layers to stay warm when you are backpacking this time of year make sure you don't over do it. have a plan and make sure you're prepared. but it seriously is a great time as you enjoy your hometown with more solitude. an organization in roanoke is working to help those with developmental disabilities lead is live at the science museum of western virginia. neesey, there is a reason for leap day, right? that's right. i'm here with de rek kellogg who's going to explain it all to us. first, let's get to the obvious question, why do we have leap years? derek kellogg: our calendar system is a type of solar calendar. it is, in essence, a reflection of one revolution of the earth around the sun. this allows us to know when to expect the seasons and through that, now, our calendar is 365 days long, but one trip around the sun actually takes 365 days 5 hours and 49 minutes (and some seconds). to account for this, we add an additional day (leap day) every four years. except for when we don't. neesey payne: when did the concept of a leap year begin? derek kellogg: the leap year actually began during roman times and was a part of the "julian reforms". these reforms were implemented by julius caesar in an attempt to fix some of the problems that resulted from how the previous version of the roman calendar was being used. neesey payne: leap years usually take place every four years, but that's not always the case. explain that to us. derek kellogg: a leap year takes place every four years. however, this actually the earth's revolution. by placing an additional day every four years, you actually end up with about 43 extra minutes. to balance this, years that are divisible by 100, but not 400 are not leap years. so the year 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 will not be. so, as you can see having a leap day every once in a while helps to keep us on track. this morning on some virginia tech basketball. last night the hokies took on wake forest to try and get their third straight acc win and to go on into the postseason with a bit of momentum. a win last night would give the hokies their first winning record since the 2010-2011 season. good hokie showed up in the form of justin bibbs. in the first 8 minutes he had 11 points thanks to some good three point shooting. he'd end up with a game high of 22. but bibbs wasn't th eonly hot hand. seth allen had it going--a trey of his own. bibbs and allen combined for 20 of the hokies first 25 points. hokies really playing energy....zach leday throwing it down but wake just hung around and the hokies only up 1 going into the second. but freshman chris clarke, would pick that energy back up in the second....putting back his own miss here. but it was just robinson really giving hokies life in the second. he slices through the defense, and 1. at this point hokies really starting to pull away. and fitting that robinson puts it away with this three pointer. tech win its, 81-74. a navy seal will be recieving the country's highest honor today. how his heroism saved a life. and ship workers showed off their heroics
