Tmy pittman tells a story all too familiar to post 9 11 veterans. An army combat engineer, he served in iraq and afghanistan helping secure roads for coalition forces. It was when he came home to attleboro that he noticed troubling signs of anxiety and stress. There would be times where if or if i was out with my friends i would need to drink too much. I was trying to cope with what i was dealing with. It has been going on for over 10 years. Even of the conflict in iraq was different from 2003 to 2004 it is different from 2007 to 2008. Becomes the goal of clinicians like dr. Peggy harvey and the staff of the homebased program. Retired Brigadier General jack hammond is the programs executive director. Having been to afghanistan at the front of the war and finished in 2012 having seen the in 2002 the impact on their families, the high rate of divorce and suicide was extremely troubling for me. I saw the what the multiple deployments were doing. Homebase has put together a comprehensive program of veteran outreach and Mental Health treatment. These are the unseen wounds of war. Theres a whole series of things that you will feel. Its the Mental Health issues related to combat to limit activity. It seemed like i was just a loan not really knowing how to manage. There was a veteran outreach it took away a lot of the stigma in the back of my mind of thinking this is going to work. It worked so well he is now part of the team helping other veterans recover from those hidden wounds. Homebased also focuses on more than just the veterans. We recognize the importance of seeing a veteran within the systems they live in. We defined family very loosely. When you send a soldier to war you send the entire family. When they come back there or transition issues. The Program Takes insurance but also helps the uninsured. There is no outofpocket expense for anyone. And has been lifechanging goal where i want to help other veterans. It has been a blessing for sure. When people lose hope thats when really bad things happen. After this program they now have hope. Karen Armand Hunter is the outreach coord welcome to our program. Let me ask you what attracted you to homebase . I was admission gratitude which is coming up again. More than calling into a place where youre going to speak to a doctor off the bat and may not understand where you are coming from. That keeps a lot of people from calling it initially. Relate. It takes a lot of the mystery out of getting help. Karen after that initial phone call whats the next step . We have two mainlines of effort to we have the intensive Clinical Program and the regional outpatient clinic. Depending on which way the patient clinic its regular outpatient services. We do intake. Basic stuff about their military history. Just to get a good feel for how we can best help them. We passed the information to our clinical and social work team and set up an appointment for initial evaluation. Karen getting that veteran into the system. You did several deployments. What personal experience to you bring to your conversation with these men . We have veterans who served in iraq, afghanistan, some who never served overseas at all but iraq and afghanistan. I have been there. I lived in. I have also been stateside with stressors whether it is with family or themselves. I got through it. I didnt want to get help initially. Its hard to make thest once you put that foot forward the next step is easier. People get there. Karen im glad you found homebase and that homebase found you. We want to talk about mission gratitude. Cmon in, pop pop happy birthday i survived a heart attack. Keep from having another one. And im taking brilinta. For people whove been hospitalized for a heart attack. I take brilinta with a baby aspirin. No more than one hundred milligrams as it affects how well it works. Brilinta helps keep my platelets from sticking together and forming a clot. Brilinta reduced the chance of another heart attack. Or dying from one. It worked better than plavix. Dont stop taking brilinta without talking to your doctor since stopping it too soon increases your risk of clots in your stent, or bleeding more easily, or serious, sometimes fatal bleeding. Dont take brilinta if you have bleeding, like stomach ulcers, a history of bleeding in the brain, or severe liver problems. Tell your doctor about bleeding, new or unexpected shortness of breath, any planned surgery, and all medicines you take. Talk to your doctor about brilinta. Im doing all i can. That includes brilinta. If you cant afford your medication, astra zeneca may be able to help. Season. But the Salvation Army helps families in poverty year round.
