Traffic and weather on the 2s. High levels of lead discovered in the water. The taps now turned off as officials call for help from the state and federal government. Janelle burrell live in newark with more this morning. Reporter hi chris and mary, most of the samples were actually taken from water sources from sinks and polices where you would wash your hands these test results showed that some of the Drinking Water sources, some of the water fountains at this Charter School came back with lead levels ten times above the acceptable limits. The testing took 324 water samples, a sample from every single water source in all eight nontraditional facilities within the Newark Public School district for this phase of testing. A quarter of those samples came back with elevated levels of led. 16 of them were from Drinking Water sources, 10 of those Drinking Water sources were the newark legacy Charter School. The epas acceptable level of lead and water is 15 parts per billion and some of the samples from water fountains, the levels were more than 10 times that. The School District began offering free blood tests to 17,000 students who attend class in the initial 30 schools that had elevated lead results. Were not forcing people to get lead testing right. We dont know how many parents are going to come forward. The mayor says the water supply is fine but old pipes in the aging building are to blame for the spike in lead levels. Reporter earlier this week the citys mayor continued his call for outside help to address the citys lead issues. He estimates that it could cost more than 1 billion to fix the citys crumbling infrastructure. Reporting live from newark, time is now 4 32. Weve got traffic and weather on the 2s. Johns off. No word on his condition and no comment from the Butler Police department. A woman was slashed in the face in Lower Manhattan. Police say shes now admitted it was a lie. She claimed the man called her a terrorist and slashed her. Police say the wound was self inflicted. Also new this morning, a new budget for the state of new york with benefits that may affect you. Mosquito season is upon us. When may, june, july, August September happen, mosquitoes are going to start to thrive and were going to be in trouble with regard to zika. A study published in the new england journal of medicine shows the potential range of two types of mosquitoes which carry the zika virus, initially concentrated in the south the cdc shows them reaching as far as San Francisco and new york city. But new york state and city Health Officials say the new maps are misleading. Weve been sampling for over 15 years, and have not identified this mosquito here in new york city, but we do know that we have its cousin. Still Officials Say theyre ramping up preventive measures.
