looked really frightened. i saw 50 or 60 dogs in need and needs us. >> she and her husband reached out to a shelter. >> when she first assessed him she said they had to carry him out. he wouldn't come out on a leash. so thinking they were traumatized. >> he's since become a part of the family and has new found friends. he was able to find a loving and happy home but there are still other dogs that are up for adoption. these three are some of the dogs that were most skiddish when they were rescued and can be found in oak ridge new jersey. these other dogs can be adopted from the animal refuge in to show you the salt on the road one of the big challenges in fighting a fire in temperatures this cold is as you spray water on the fire that water turns to ice. in this case it was so cold that firefighters actually had to call in the department of sanitation to come in and salt the entire area. so still a lot of clean up and damage control involved in this fire. the one saving grace is fdny totals a coating to maybe an inch. south shore up to an inch maybe over an inch north and west in the one to three range and where the cold air lingers longer three to six possible. the exception not the rule and mainly rain for parts of ocean county. the problem is with this scenario and set-up there's an element of ice so sleet and freezing rain, a trace to a tenth of an inch but trust me you do not need that much ice to cause problems. that's tonight. it's this afternoon snow then to the mix overnight tonight and tomorrow a big surge of warm air and the really heavy rain. problem with that night. detectives working inside after allegations from a woman in her 20s that former new york governor elliot spitzer physically assaulted her. the woman claims she and spitzer had been friends for two years. sources tell cbs 2 that the alleged altercation began saturday night because she was planning to return to her native russia. the woman claims the verbal argument turned violent with his hands around her neck. a spokesperson issuing a brief statement saying there is no truth to the allegation. in 2008 spitzer resigned as governor after being involved in a prostitution scandal. the woman in this most recent case was taken to the hospital after attempting to cut her wrists and is still planning to return to russia. sources say the woman is no longer cooperating with police and fire that are still left in those walls. meanwhile in addition to all of the fire trucks surrounding at the end of the road because conditions were so cold they had to call in the department of sanitation to help make the area safer to walk through. flames shot out of 49 diamond street in greenpoint brooklyn as neighbors could only stand by and watch. the fdny says the fire started around 10:30:00 p.m. and moved quickly. >> it was fully involved when we arrived it spread to the exposure two and four side. there was fire in three buildings. >> it took dozens of firefighters to finally put that fire out a task made even more challenging by frigid temperatures. >> over the last couple of days some of the coldest temperatures we've seen in the last 20 years. >> temperatures in central park at negative 1 for the first time since 1980 setting a new valentines day record but some tried their best not to let it stand in their way. six layers. >> we've had imbued winter. you can't get bogged by that. it's not a big deal. >> but others it was a big deal like workers cleaning up after a busted water pipe. frozen pipes also burst at a high school sending water pouring onto the steps and sidewalk and it's still not clear how much damage was done inside. and back here on diamond street in greenpoint the salt in the area is helping though you still have to watch your step. icy massive pile up. bridge water new jersey and kenneth were pronounced dead at the scene saturday morning in bethel town ship on interstate 78, 75 miles north of philadelphia. dozens were injured after the massive chain reaction crash. passing snow squalls and white out conditions played a significant role in the crash. a former israeli prime minister is behind bars to serve 19 months for bribery >> mary we can see firefighters on the roof of the building happening along olive olmstead avenue in the bronx a short time ago and not only are there flames coming through the roof of the building but brief we were able to see flames coming out of the back of the building as well. firefighters are inside the building as well as up on the roof. in the three story building there's businesses on the ground floor two stories of apartments above that. no injuries have been reported the cause of the fire not known but a very active scene and firefighters still on the roof trying to get access to the fire and work on that situation. smith cbs 2 news. >> can you tell us anything about evacuations going on at this time. >> mary we can see firefighters were going into the building at this point. we would have to believe that they evacuated the building itself and at this point making sure there's nobody left inside the building. you can see the firefighters coming out maneuvering the hoses. we do not know if there are further evacuations. it does seem to be contained to one building and no concerns about spreading but that is something we'll have to monitor. >> real quickly it looks like the flames lower left of the screen on the first floor as well as on the roof and front and back. any idea how many alarms this is at this point? >> mary we are over olmstead avenue in the bronx. do want to mention the highway itself is not being effected. a portion of olmstead avenue elevated. it was a two alarm fire. initial firefighters responded and called in extra men power and equipment. flames burning through the roof of the building which is three stories. there are businesses at the ground level as well as two floors of apartments above that. firefighters you can see going in through the window. a few minutes ago there were several on the roof. they have pulled back from the roof but at this point there are firefighters going inside the building at the ground on the upper level window. no injuries have been reported. not known how many people were in the building but we believe everybody is out of the building and no word yet on any further evacuations in the neighboring buildings. it does not appear the fire is in danger of spreading at this point but that is something the fire department will have to monitor. a two alarm fire in the bronx. no injuries have been reported and keeping you updates on the situation as it unfolds. >> we'll get back to you shortly. nassau county executive has been targeted by a hacker and denies any involvement in a sexting schedule. >> i'm a victim here. i'm being hacked this is a lie and i will bring every legal action to catch this person and bring this to justice. mangano defended himself to cbs 2 marcia kramer saying someone is out to get him and hacked his phone to send the texts. many of the messages were x rated. this is just one that claims to be from an ed mangano. >> i really just want you next to me nothing else just that. i miss being alone with you. i wanted to see you. >> tomorrow? of the bronx. >> and former governor elliot spitzer at the center of an assault allegation. a woman claims he choked her inside a midtown hotel. >> a fire has broken out in an apartment building in the bronx. jim smith has details. >> it's a three alarm fire along olmstead avenue in the bronx very close to the bronx expressway. the fire breaking out within the last hour at times heavy flames coming through the roof of the building as well as portions of the back and lower level of the building itself. much of the flames have been out but the fire department has still pockets of flames on the lower level and portion of the back of the building there. at this point there are no injuries that have been reported. we believe the building has been evacuated not knowing where or how the fire started. again a three alarm fire along olm stead avenue in the bronx. no injuries have been reported. cbs 2 news. >> jim thank you. in brooklyn another fire now under control. >> the flames began in a three story building before spreading to neighboring buildings causing major damage. diane macedo joins us from green point. >> firefighters are still on the scene in green point making sure this fire is completely out and trying to uncover exactly what caused it. it started around 10:30:00 p.m. and we watched as flames were and ended up effecting three different building. they are waiting to see whether or not it was related and more challenging to fight. in other parts of the city people tried to brave the temperatures but in some areas that was harder to do than others at a brooks brothers store in midtown where the pipes burst and created a water fall down the wall and a high school making a mess creating a big icy scene in front of the school. not sure how much damage was done inside. back here on diamond street in green point it's a similar scene. there's ice just about everywhere from all of the water the firefighters used to get the fire under control. they did bring in a salt truck and they are trying to make the condition safe but it's always a hazard. luckily no one was injured in the fire itself. diane macedo cbs 2 news. >> let's get over to john. >> if there are any drainage issues if you have water hitting the roadways or sidewalks that too will ice over and the potential for snow giving way to ice and freezing rain later today and overnight. we'll talk about that change over in a bit but in the city right now still cold 16 wind like 7. wind chills 1 in hamptons. cold out there cold enough for snow but the atmosphere is too dry to support it now. that changes by the early afternoon. 32 at 3 but notice that warm up under way so you are going to see 36 by 9. already a change over. that's why there's more significant totals north and west you. the nypd is trying to figure out what happened between elliot spitzer and a woman on saturday night. midtown. >> spitzer himself has yet to comment on the claims but a spokesperson for the former governor is denying those allegations this morning. claims that he assaulted that young woman inside one of the guest rooms here at the plaza. crime scene investigators parked across the street from the luxury plaza hotel sunday night. detectives working inside after allegations from a woman in her 20s that former new york governor elliot spitzer physically assaulted her. the woman claims she and spitzer had been friends for two years. sources tell cbs 2 that the alleged altercation began saturday night because she was planning to return to her native russia. the woman claims the verbal argument then turned violent with spitzer allegedly pushing her and then putting his hands around her neck. a spokesperson for the former governor issuing a brief statement saying there is no truth to the allegation. governor after being involved in a prostitution scandal. sources say the woman in this most recent case was taken to an area hospital after attempting to cut her wrists. she is still planning to return to russia. >> and sources tell cbs 2 that the alleged victim is no longer cooperating with police. spitzer has not been questioned by the nypd and no channels have been filed. reporting live this morning from midtown janelle burrell cbs 2 news. >> thank you. a new jersey woman and long island man are among two people killed on a highway over the weekend. 46-year-old and 50-year-old of were pronounced dead at the scene. it happened saturday morning about 75 miles north of philadelphia. dozens were injured after the massive chain reaction crash. investigators believe passing snow squalls and white out 78 that left trucks and cars scattered across three lanes. from fire to ice a philadelphia business that sight. the water froze in the same brutally cold temperatures over the weekend as firefighters tried to put out the blaze an at an auto body shop. high winds also made it a difficult fight. an airplane had to return to the airport after a laser pointer hit the plane just a few minutes after it departed heath row. it returned as a precaution and an investigation is under way. new this morning a former israeli prime minister is behind bars and arrived at the prison where he'll serve 19 months for bribery and justice. the case dates to when he was the mayor of jerusalem years boyfriend 2006. he is the first israeli prime minister to serve under control it does appear the fire is knocked down and getting it under control at this point. it happened along olmstead avenue near the bronx expressway no word on the cause and no injuries elderly man and woman. police say they found the bodies in his home after he called 911 from a walmart parking lot. he was covered in blood and a baseball bat found in the home believed to be the the air is cold enough it's all snow then you see it change to sleet where it actually is falling ice. but then as it warms up a little bit aloft it melts and then freezes on contact. and then by tuesday it's all rain because you go from two to on tuesday. do watch out for messy conditions this afternoon. we've been saying this all morning long. thankfully it's a holiday. still a little busy this morning right alex? >> right john and it continues on the rail. subway changes due to a problem with mechanical problems. northbound trains running from atlantic avenue barclays center also 2 trains are running on the 5 line from franklin avenue to 149th street grand concourse. also a broken rail in manhattan to run express from jackson heights roosevelt avenue to queens plaza. a live look senator charles schumer is calling on the white house to reconsider the proposal to cut funding of counter-terrorism programs. >> this is a huge mistake and it will not stand. the president in general has been good on terror funding but this year the bureaucrats got through a very serious mistake that must, must, must be reversed. >> schumer says the move would slash funding from $600 million to $300 million to help cities prevent respond to and recover from attacks. the money is crucial for new for counter-terrorism programs. crews rescued 48 people from two tram cars getting stuck 40 feet off the ground in sub zero temperatures. passengers were lowered to the ground one by one. many staid was frightening but no injuries were reported. a video encounter with a snow leopard in india showing a leopard huddling in the snow before bounding away. they are endangered and weigh up to 165-pounds and can kill prey up to four times their weight. the skier says the leopard let out a roar hoarding situation. >> we tracked down one of the adopted dogs and have more. >> bear is a sweet and playful ago was rescued from this north bergen home. more than 50 animals were found inside the house with no heat and in filthy living conditions. a dead dog and several cats were also discovered. debbie bear's new owner remembers seeing images from the day the animals were rescued. >> i saw people carrying out the dogs and some of them were so young and to think that no one was really caring for them frightened. i say like almost 50 or 60 dogs in need and i thought one of those puppies needs us. >> her and her husband reached out to a shelter that took in the rescues and found bear. >> he was so scared they had to carry him out. he wouldn't walk on a leash. >> he's since become a part of the family and has new friends. >> bear with able to find a loving and happy home but there are still other dogs that are these three are some of the dogs that were most skiddish when they
