We will have a live report from one of the winning locations in the next half hour. Now a developing story. Tragedy strikes Columbia University after an accident in central america. Three columbian students have been killed. Janelle burrell is live with more this morning. Janelle . Reporter three of the female students will not be returning back here to campus when classes resume here next week. The three women were on this medical mission in honduras when they were on their bus, on their way back to the airport to return home and it crashed. The overturned bus, mangled, its windows shattered after falling more than 250 feet down a ravine, crashing with a group of medical volunteers inside. Olivia, a 20yearold sophomore, daniella, a 21year old junior at barnard college, the all Womens College that is old abigail, a Nurse Practitioner, also a student with the general studies program, all killed from the impact. The group had been volunteering for several days with doctors and pharmacists as part of a medical mission. Students say its popular to volunteer overseas during school breaks. There are a lot of students here who want to do a lot of good and its a chance to get out there in the world and start doing it. The group was going to the airport to return back to new york when the accident happened. Other columbia students who were also on board the bus were also injured. Our prayers go out to the students. Parents in deer park, long island on edge after a Police Warning following recent incidents where men tried to lure children into their cars. In one incident, two middle school kids got off a school bus and were walking home. Police say a man in a redmonda approached them and said he had something for them. A father says his 6th grade son was confronted last friday. The man offered the boy nogo with him to an money to go with him to an arcade. Somebody walked up to him and came outside the car and spoke to him and said do you want 100 . The School District is telling parents to remind their children about the dangers of getting too close to strange cars. New this morning, police are on the hunt for a man accused of robberies on the lower east side. At least four times. The last reported incident was back on december 30th, when a woman says he grabbed her and demanded money while inside a stairwell near a building on henry street. Newlyreleased records slow theres been a startling increase in reported sex assaults on the citys subway. In 2015, there was a 33 percent increase in sex abuse cases and a 25 percent increase in forcible touching cases. As for public lewdness, that was up 9 percent. Rape showed a significant decline. Cases were down 80 percent. Officials insist the subway is safe and say the increase is a result of more reporting of crimes. Ltrain riders may have to find a new way to get around. The mta is considering completely shutting down the line between manhattan and brooklyn for more than a year to repair damage from super storm sandy. Including 20,000 units of Emergency Shelter beds. And in a slap at the mayor, the governor asked the controller to audit and inspect all city shelters to be sure theyre safe and clean. Shelters that they find to be unsafe or dangerous will either immediately add local Police Protection or they will be closed. Shut them down. If you have children and families living in deplorable, dangerous conditions, we have an obligation to clean it up or get people moved out of these shelters. I think that thats an excellent approach. I mean, were paying over 1 1 billion a year in the city of new york to run a shelter system. A terrifying ride to work for a woman on long island who was attacked and robbed while driving to work. The suspect, richard clinton, who police say was on drugs, was walking on route 111 near the long island expressway while the woman was at a red light, she says he pulled her and got on top of her. The victim says she was screaming for help, but no one stopped. Clinton was arrested 10 minutes later. New york city now has its first socalled Sober High School where students coping with addiction can get the help they need. The Newport Academy day school is a private school. In addition to academics, there is a focus on keeping students off drugs and alcohol. Teenagers going through rehab can do so without the peer pressure of school. There is therapy, medication and yoga. Tuition is about 50 thousand 50,000 a year. Happening today, City Council Considering a measure to allow new yorkers to contact 911 by texting. Launching whats called next generation 911, it would be handled by the Citys Department of Information Technology and telecommunications. No idea how long it would take eto get the system running. I usually have two pairs of pants and a sweatshirt. Nothing gets done. Building management says the problem is temporary while the roof is being replaced and say theyre trying to get it fixed as soon as possible. You always wonder why you fix the roof at this time of the year. Dont do did. When you have temperatures like that, they plug in too you can get a fire. People are desperate. They have to stay warm. I mean, this isnt the kind of snow to plow, but with the cold surfaces, it will be slippery. Then its chilly today, a bit of a breeze and mid to upper 30s. Tomorrow, big jump with a push of warm air. Dozens of dogs and cats are in a new Jersey Shelter this morning after being rescued. Authorities call it a case of animal hording. Tony aiello reports. Reporter the puppies were friendly and frisky, but the older dogs were so frightened, many refuseth to walk and had to be carried away. Its overwhelming. They dont know what to do so they freeze. This rescuer suspects some of the 49 dogs had never stepped foot outside the filthy house at 132 Hillcrest Road in north bergen. Pretty horrendous. Its unhabitable by humans and with feces and urine. Reporter carol complained about the conditions, the noise and the smell. Rescuers wore face masks. They put a dab of menthol under their nose to mask the smell. Its heartbreaking. University officials tell us they have sent staff representatives to honduras to help other students who remain in the hospital. Reporter mary, when classes start up again here on campus next week, it will be without who chose to spend part of their vacation volunteering overseas and lost they are lives on their way home. The overturned bus, mangled, windows shattered after falling more than 250 feet down a ravine, crashing with a group of medical volunteers inside. Olivia ehrhardt, a 20yearold sophomore, daniella, a 21year old junior, and 45yearold abigail flanagan, a Nurse Practitioner with the medical center, also a student with the general studies program. All killed from the impact. The group was volunteering for several days with doctors and farm sitses, as part of a medical mission. Students say its popular to volunteer overseas during school breaks. A lot of students want to do a lot of good. Its a chance to get out there in the world and start doing it. The group was going to the airport to return back to new happened. Other columbia students also on board the bus were also injured. Our prayers go out to the students over there. Reporter a long island woman was going to work Tuesday Morning and saw a man police say was on drugs. He was walking aroute 111 off of exit 56 of the long island expressway. A friend tells us she tried not to make eye contact, but thats when he struck. Police say the man opened the passengers side door when the woman was stopped at a red light. He got into the vehicle and searched for things to steal, but it didnt stop there. The man got out, came to the drivers side and pulled the woman out of the vehicle. She was blind sided on her way to work. Anyone would be a little bit shaken up after that. Reporter we spoke to a friend of the victim over the phone. Car. By her ankles and got on top of her. Reporter candice says her friends car should lock automatically. They suspect because of the cold weather, the doors didnt lock. People in the area are being extra cautious. I lock my doors always.
