Three columbian students have been killed. Janelle burrell is live with more this morning. Janelle . Reporter three of the female students will not be returning back here to campus when classes resume here next week. The three women were on this medical mission in honduras when they were on their bus, on their way back to the airport to return home and it crashed. The overturned bus, mangled, its windows shattered after falling more than 250 feet down a ravine, crashing with a group of medical volunteers inside. Olivia, a 20yearold sophomore, daniella, a 21year old junior at barnard college, the all Womens College that is old abigail, a Nurse Practitioner, also a student with the general studies program, all killed from the impact. The group had been volunteering for several days with doctors and pharmacists as part of a medical mission. Students say its popular to volunteer overseas during school breaks. There are a lot of students here who want to do a lot of good and its a chance to get out there in the world and start doing it. The group was going to the airport to return back to new york when the accident happened. Other columbia students who were also on board the bus were also injured. Our prayers go out to the students. The suspect, richard clinton, who police say was on drugs, was walking on route 111 near the long island expressway while the woman was at a red light, she says he pulled her and got on top of her. New york city now has its first socalled Sober High School where students coping with addiction can get the help they need. The Newport Academy day school is a private school. In addition to academics, there is a focus on keeping students off drugs and alcohol. Teenagers going through rehab can do so without the peer pressure of school. Dozens of dogs and cats are in a new Jersey Shelter this morning after being rescued. Authorities call it a case of animal hording. Tony aiello reports. Reporter the puppies were friendly and frisky, but the older dogs were so frightened, many refuseth to walk and had to be carried away. Its overwhelming. They dont know what to do so they freeze. This rescuer suspects some of the 49 dogs had never stepped foot outside the filthy house at 132 Hillcrest Road in north bergen. Pretty horrendous. Its unhabitable by humans and with feces and urine. University officials tell us they have sent staff representatives to honduras to help other students who remain in the hospital. Reporter mary, when classes start up again here on campus next week, it will be without who chose to spend part of their vacation volunteering overseas and lost they are lives on their way home. The overturned bus, mangled, windows shattered after falling more than 250 feet down a ravine, crashing with a group of medical volunteers inside. Olivia ehrhardt, a 20yearold sophomore, daniella, a 21year old junior, and 45yearold abigail flanagan, a Nurse Practitioner with the medical center, also a student with the general studies program. All killed from the impact. The group was volunteering for several days with doctors and farm sitses, as part of a medical mission. Students say its popular to volunteer overseas during school breaks. A lot of students want to do a lot of good. Its a chance to get out there in the world and start doing it. The group was going to the airport to return back to new happened. Other columbia students also on board the bus were also injured. Our prayers go out to the students over there. Reporter a long island woman was going to work Tuesday Morning and saw a man police say was on drugs. He was walking aroute 111 off of exit 56 of the long island expressway. A friend tells us she tried not to make eye contact, but thats when he struck. Police say the man opened the passengers side door when the woman was stopped at a red light. He got into the vehicle and searched for things to steal, but it didnt stop there. The man got out, came to the drivers side and pulled the woman out of the vehicle. She was blind sided on her way to work. Anyone would be a little bit shaken up after that. Reporter we spoke to a friend of the victim over the phone. Car. By her ankles and got on top of her. Reporter candice says her friends car should lock automatically. They suspect because of the cold weather, the doors didnt lock. People in the area are being extra cautious. I lock my doors always.
