A few minutes ago they had a large sitin here at the entrance. So far we have counted at least 24 folks arrested. What happens is the police will go in and handcuff them and then bring them down to some wagons down the street to process the arrests. Faculty and staff and students over a contract dispute. Apparently five years without a contract here at cuny. And again, they have said large protests and they plan some civil dis disobeidians like this. Thank you. A city bus driver accused in a hitandrun crash that left an elderly woman dead in brooklyn went before a judge today. 48yearold paul roper just appeared in court. Cbs 2s meg baker was there. Reporter this walker belonging to 70yearold carol bell left lying in the street tuesday after she was struck and killed by an mta bus in brooklyn. Today, the driver of that bus 48yearold paul roper arraigned charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield to a pedestrian, and failure to exercise due care. Ropers lawyer spoke outside the courthouse. A video like this people rush to judgment. Reporter police have video showing the b15 bus which was street to go east on fulton as bell was in the crosswalk. Investigators say the bus stopped for a few seconds, then drove on, dragging bells body further down the street. Roper never got out of the bus. Its so sad the way she had to die this way. But they got it on camera. Reporter he worked 15 years in transit. His family clearly emotional. His parents were also bus drivers. He is not a bad person. Reporter former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said nothing as arrived at federal court in Lower Manhattan for his corruption trial but the star witness talked on the stand. Dr. Robert taub said he referred cases to silvers law firm in order to get research funding. Taub testified that when he was initially approached by investigators, he lied and denied the referrals saying, i was terrified and i panicked and i wanted to divorce myself from any pending investigation. But taub later admitted he referred over 25 complaints to silver, hoping the powerful Assembly Leader would fund his research center. Taub testified, i hoped to so hole that i dont mean were research and help my patients Mesothelioma Research and help my patients. Silver is charged with earning 5 million by selling his office for bribes and kickbacks. He was referred to Weitz Luxenberg but the head of the firm testified silver never told them the referrals came from a doctor who got state grants. There wasnt any discussion about that. Silvers lawyers argued that he was making a legitimate income out side his Assembly Salary and they are trying to make it a crime and it isnt. This trial could take six weeks.
