Now drivers have a new app to help them compete against other forms of transportation. Theres been a sharp drop in the number of people riding yellow taxis because of uber, lyft. This is a good move by the tlc. Lets hope the public uses it and it really levels the playing field. Reporter like uber, lyft, via and get, yellow taxis now have an app for customers to catch a ride called arrow. Today is day one. But does it work . You should be my first request if it comes through properly. Reporter i tried to use the new app several times to no avail. I walked over to Arnold Singleton to see if he was the cab i requested. I think its not working properly. Reporter he downloaded the app on his meter system. It reads e hail enabled. But when i requested a taxi while sitting next to him, the app directed a cab a few blocks away to meet me. Im the closest and pick up another one about two blocks away. Arrow says today was a soft launch so that both drivers and passengers would have a chance to learn how and when to use the app. This editor thinks it will be interesting to see how drivers balance regular fares versus people using the arrow app. Unlike uber these drivers dont have phones in their cars all doing it through their dispatching system and meter system in the car. So its a little bit more complicated not quite as seamless but its a good first step for the taxi industry. Reporter arrow promises no surge pricing unlike uber. I tested how the competition measured up. Uber, fast, efficient but can be pricy. Via, a right sharing app charges 5 per ride anywhere in manhattan. These people like it because its convenient and affordable. I think i prefer the experience, right . Its quite and reliable, like, you know, um, its like they have never failed me. Reporter arrow says the taxi app will be more useful to those in outer boroughs where cabs are harder to come by. On the upper west side, meg baker, cbs 2 news.
