Our top story, the president s raucous Campaign Rally overnight. He started with a call for unity. Then, he quickly tore into his detractors. President trump is weeks up here in arizona, after delivering a 77minute fiery speech here overnight. It was taking aim at his detractors. And it was a major reversal, after calling on the country to come together one day earlier. As protesters line the street s outside of the convention center, inside, President Trump abandoning his scripted remarks from a day earlier, mr. Trump was unrestrained, lashing out. The president defending his response to the clashes in charlottesville. What happened in charlottesville strikes at the core of america. Reporter but the president quickly turned his remarks into an allout assault, accusing the press of misrepresenting his initial statements. They dont want to report that i spoke out forcefully against hatred, bigotry, and violence, and condemned the neonazis, White Supremacists and the kkk. Reporter mr. Trump never mentioning the controversial part of his response to the violence. You had fine people, on both sides. Reporter words that prompted criticism from democrats and republicans, as well as business and military leaders. Still, the president arguing overnight, his initial statements were clear and onpoint. I didnt say i love you because youre black of i love you because youre white. I love all of the people of our country. Reporter the speech, which lasted more than an hour, filled with red meat for his supporters. We have to close down the government to build that wall. Reporter and saying he would pardon george arpaio. I wont do it tonight because i dont want to cause any controversy. Is that okay . But sheriff joe can feel good. Reporter mr. Trump suggesting the massive trade deal nafta, could seen be a long of the past. I think we will probably term nit nafta. Reporter no one was spared his sharp bashes, including members of his own party from arizona. Without mentioning them by aim, he took aim against john mccain for voting against the health care bill, and of jeff flake, for being critical of him. And nobody wants to talk about your other senator, who is weak on borders, weak on crime. I wont talk about him. Nobody wants me to talk about him. Nobody knows who the hell he is. Reporter former National Director of intelligence, James Clapper, blasting mr. Trump and calling him disturbing. I question his ability to be in this office. Reporter clapper suggesting the president could be a threat to national security. I worry about, frankly, the access to nuclear codes. Reporter and this morning, new signs the president s relationship with the senates Top Republican could be deteriorating. President trump and Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell havent spoken in weeks, after an angry phone call over health care. The spokesperson not denying the account. But telling nbc news, they have a lot of shared goals. Infrastructure, not defaulting on the debt. Its another rift by a president who seems to be fighting on many sides. Matt and savannah . Reporter the goal for the police was to keep the protesters separated from the trump supporters. They were mostly successful. But when trump wrapped up, thats when the trouble started. There were four people arrested by the end of the night. Thankfully no one was injured. While it started out as a peaceful process for thousands outside of the Phoenix Convention center tensions in some areas quickly escalated into pockets of chaos, following President Trumps speech. Groups of supporters and detractors began shouting chants at each other. Violence erupted, as what appears to be a protester, throwing punches at a trump supporter in a pickup truck. Protesters started to hurl objects at police. They decided it was time to disburse the crowd. We heard bangs and quickly transfer, felt the effects of tear gas. I saw somebody being hit in the lip bleeding. And had to bandage to cover the blood. Afterward afterwards, they fired more tear gas. Reporter city officials denied rubber bullets were used. They said there was no widespread chaos, blaming the clashes on the protesters. It was chaos. Those were your words. I will say that we were prepared. We were decisive and immediately responsive. We were tear gassed first. Reporter earlier, President Trump told the crowd of his supporters, there was no cause to worry outside. Just just you know from the secret service, there arent too many people outside protesting, okay . That, i can tell you. Reporter phoenix mayor greg stanton was concerned that the scenes we saw play out in charlottesville, virginia, would play out here in phoenix. This morning, theres relief that that kind of violence was avoided. Stephanie gosk, thank you. A lot more to get to, ip colluding fallout of the collisions involving deadly warships. The latest just off of singap e singapore. Overnight, the commander of the navys 7th fleet was relieved of his duties. Andrea mitchell has that. Reporter no confidence in a top naval officer. The removal of the commander of the 7th plefleet, as the navy ls to see why there has been four issues alone. Vice admiral Joseph Aucoin has been the fleets commander since 2015. His rerivmoval is the highest. He will be replaced by rare admiral phil sawyer. The dismissal follows four accidents in the last year. The last two collisions, involving uss fitzgerald and uss mccain, leading to some injuries on the crew. Uss mccain inside its flooded compartme compartments, divers wound human remains. Just this morning, an unidentified body was recovered. And now, were beginning to learn from the families who lost some of the missing men. Like John Hoagland and jacke drake. And jonathan smith. And in illinois, the family of logan palmer is praying he might still be alive. Everywhere i look i see the opportunity that i will see my brother again. Im sure that goes for my family, as well. Reporter the cause for the collision on monday between the destroyer and an oil tanker, a mystery. Navy officials looking at all possibilities. In the wake of the disasters, the navy called a halt to Operations Worldwide to discover the scope of the problem. Scott fleet says he spoke with the crew themselves. Not ruling out sabotage or anything else, they are focusing on training and the role the Communications May have played in this tragedy. The top u. S. Commander in the middle east says additional troops will arrive in afghanistan in days or weeks. The comments came one day after the president announced his decision to boost the American Military effort in afghanistan. The president said the u. S. Would take a new approach to the nations longest war. He did not mention how many additional troops or reveal specific plans. Various reports have put the number of possible additional u. S. Forces as high as 4,000. Also this morning, new arrest warrants have been issued, now, for one of the white nationalists who took part in the violent rallies in charlottesville over the weekend and was featured prominently in a documentary about the protests. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez has this. Reporter Christopher Cantwell is hiding outside of virginia. He does not deny he pepper sprayed someone. But he says he did it in selfforce. This morning, Christopher Cantwell, one of the organizers of the violent unite the right group in charlottesville, is facing charges. For millions that watched his vice news interview, he has become the face of hate in this country. Now, university of Virginia Police have obtained felony warrant, stemming from the torchlit march before the rally. One count of use of tear gas. And continantwell said he did p spray someone. But said it was lawful selfdefense. Emily was there that night and filed a report against cantwell. I thought i was going to die. I assumed i would not walk out of that. Ive been told theres a warrant out for my arrest. Reporter the march, cantwell, believing he might be facing charges, posted this video, addressed to police. Im terrified. I think youre going to kill me. Reporter i spoke with him by phone. I went down there not with the intention of violence. I went down there prepared for violence, because i know our enemies will attack us. Im trying to make myself more capable of violence. I dont care if people are offended.
