special counsel leading into the russia investigation. as nbc learns the president is shaking up his legal team. breaking overnight, a powerful earthquake rocks greece and turkey. two people killed. 120 others injured. historic buildings destroyed. new video shows the grafrantic moment that quake struck. and maria menounos getting battle. > >> this was a gift. i needed to change my life. new york to d.c. in 29 minutes. why it could happen sooner than you think. today, july 21st, 2017. this is "today." >> so glad to have you alock with us. we have willie in for matt. >> get like a flashback of the '90s, everybody glued to television sets, waiting for the wait of o.j. simpson. >> o.j. simpson, soon to be a free man after that decision by a nevada parole board. the country's most infamous inmate granted parole. not before simpson made controversial statements about his past. we have full coverage. starting with joe fryer. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. no specific date has been set. but after nine years behind bars, o.j. simpson will leave prison as early as october 1st. he says he would like to move to florida. there's a process to make that happen. this all comes after a unanimous vote to grant simpson parole. >> i will vote to grant parole. >> reporter: no stranger dramatic moments, his reaction was on live tv. the ruling came after a 75-minute hearing, with simpson pressing his case to the parole board 130 miles away. in vivid retail, he recounted his version of events about his confrontation that landed him behind bars. at times he expressed regret. >> i'm sorry it happened. >> reporter: in other moments, he appeared defensive. >> nobody has accused me of pulling a weapon on them. i've spent a conflict-free life. >> reporter: those statements stunning to christopher darden. >> outrageous. >> reporter: author of "in c contem contempt," he was one of the prosecutor s when simpson was accused of killing his ex-wife and ron goldman. >> if i lived next door to o.j. simpson, i would be concerned. very concerned. >> reporter: the parole board received hundreds of letters from the public, many citing the murder case and the civil judgment against simpson. >> however, these items will not be considered in this case. >> reporter: instead, parole commissioners heard from up with of the robbery victims. >> o.j. is my friend, always has been. >> reporter: he not only testified that simpson should be released, but offered to pick him up from prison. >> juice, i'll be here tomorrow for you. i mean that. >> reporter: there were also lighter moments, highlights the nerves in both locations. >> we have that you are currently -- well, recently turned 90 years old. i'm sorry about that. you look great for 90. >> reporter: now, at age 70, simpson can start preparing for life as a free man. simpson says he's not looking to be involved with the media, adding he has turned down interviews during his time behind bars. the parole board made his very clear, if he violates the conditions of his release, he will be right back here behind bars. >> joe fryer, thank you. let's focus on the road ahead for simpson. andrea canning sat down with one of his friends that was in the hearing room at lovelock correction at center. >> reporter: good morning. tom scotto has been one of o.j.'s most loyal friends for decades. he said there were tears and emotions in that room. tom and the family sat down with o.j. in lovelock prison to talk about all kinds of things. but the biggest thing on the table was what happens next. >> i said to o.j., you look so fantastic. i'm so proud of you. look at you. you're shining. >> i vote to grant parole. >> reporter: it's the moment o.j. simpson has been waiting for for nine years. and they're supporting him, nex to his family, was his friend, tom scotto. what did he say to you? >> he came out yelling. i'm going home. >> reporter: friends for more than 20 years, it was scotto's wedding that brought simpson to las vegas. hours later, simpson took part of that botched robbery of two memorabilia dealers that landed him behind bars. how has he changed? what has this taught him? >> this has changed him. they treat him very nice. not because he's o.j. simpson. he's a great inmate. >> reporter: he says simpson now hopes to move to florida where scotto lives. is there a chance he might live with you? >> we talked about that. there's a chance. >> reporter: do you worry? does anybody worry about o.j. that he could end up back behind bars as he reenters society? >> no. o.j. does nothing wrong. clearly what he did was inappropriate. but he lives a -- look. we go out. we don't hide. we go out in public. we go out and we have fun. we don't hide. we don't stay in the house, hidden. >> absolutely, 100% not guilty. >> reporter: there's been so much renewed attention on o.j., not just from this hearing but from the drama that won the emmys. what does he think about this? >> he thought they were terrible. >> reporter: was o.j. maintain his innocence in the murders? >> absolutely. >> reporter: is it something that haunts him? >> we don't really want to talk about it. we want to move forward, instead of backwards. everybody tried to destroy him over that. >> what do you say to the people that want to see o.j. stay behind bars for the crimes he was acquitted of? >> he is in prison, not for vegas. he's in prison for california. it was payback, absolutely. >> reporter: simpson has been a model prisoner. but what will he do on the outside? what does he want to do with his life? >> see his family. and hang out with the new friends he has. >> reporter: why have you stuck by him with the good and the bad? >> he's my best friend. i love him. i lost contracts in my business because of him i have to do what's right. >> reporter: so, what happens right now? scotto says he talked to the warden yesterday, who said o.j. was to immediately clear out his cell. he was going to be moved to a more secure location, where he will be housed by himself until his release date. that's to protect him. and he says, the day he gets out, he will be waiting for him at lovelock. >> thank you very much. let's turn to nbc senior legal correspondent, cynthia mcfadden, who has been covering the case since that trial. i know you were watching that parole hearing as closely as all of us were. to me, it seemed like the parole board knew what they were going to do. >> as you know, the parole board has very specific guidelines for what they need to do. and o.j. checked all of the boxes. at the beginning of the hearing, we heard the risk factors were low, the aggravating factors, to keep him in, was because the victims feared for their safety. we had one of the victims, the only surviving victim was saying, it's all cool with me. >> and i'll pick you up. >> you knew they were going to release him. but i have to tell him, o.j. simpson did himself no favors yesterday. what he said to the parole board, my jaw was hanging down. >> he looked like a guy that knew what the parole board was going to do. he was confident, he was redefiant. reliving the case. >> one might even say cocky. >> do you think he could have compromised his ability to reach parole? >> i think the way the rules were set up, that parole board had no choice but to parole him. and let's just put on the table, nine years for this crime is a long time. i think the parole board did what it needed to do. but o.j. simpson said he lived a conflict-free life. >> everyone remembers immediately the sounds of nicole brown simpson screaming for her life, on a 911 call. >> and the photographs of her, the testimony of her sister saying she was in fear for her life. nicole said over the years, he someday is going to kill me. that made it hard to swallow. >> the road ahead, a couple things. the parole board can set conditions that if you violate, you're back in jail. >> he will have two parole boards. if he goes to florida, which is his preference, his house there was put up -- was taken from him, essentially. if he goes to florida, it would be nevada and florida, would set conditions. and so, he'll have to make sure he walks the straight and narrow. and with social media out there, which wasn't there in 23 years ago, or even 9, every public move will be recorded. >> cynthia, thank you for having here. appreciate it. we'll have more on o.j. simpson next half hour. there's a lot more to get to, including developments out of washington. there's reports that the white house is trying to turn the tables on the special counsel leading the russia investigation. and president trump is shaking up his legal team. and there's fallout from when the president went after his own attorney general. a lot to get through. peter alexander standing by at the white house. >> reporter: good morning to you. another quiet friday at the white house. first, about that shakeup. nbc news has confirmed that mark kasowitz is no longer leading the president's outside legal counsel. we are told he will continue to provide guidance to the president. and two months of coming onboard, the legal team spokesperson tells me he has resigned. there's new indications that the president may be lying the groundwork to undermine the special counsel robert moouelle. this morning, there's reports that the trump team is look to undercut robert mueller's investigation. trump's backgrounds of people o mueller's team. "the post" asked the president about his pardon powers, including the ability to pardon aides and himself. the story is nonsense. the president's lawyers are cooperating with special counsel robert mueller. aides are making clear that the special counsel should not move outside of the investigation. >> would that be a breach? >> i would say yes. >> reporter: u.s. officials familiar with the probe, says he's finding the strike zone, gathering relevant documents, including business records. the fbi will pursue any credible evidence of possible crimes regardless of whether they are russia-related. jeff sessions insists he's planning to stay put. >> we love this job. we love this department. and i plan to continue to do so as long as that is appropriate. >> reporter: the show of confidence coming one day after the public undressing of sessions. accusing the a.d.'s recusal was unfair to him. >> sessions should have never recused h ims. if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job. >> reporter: despite the president's disappointment, the white house saying mr. trump has confidence in sessions. zmri think you know this president well enough that if he wanted somebody fake e taken ace would make that clear. >> reporter: and on capitol hill, senator john mccain's absence is palpable, in the wake of his brian cancer. >> he has called me three times this morning. no more woe is me, lindsay. he's yelling at me to buck up. >> i can't imagine the senate without john mccain. he is the elder statesman. he is the statesman in the senate. >> reporter: the arizona republican is vowing a quick return. unfortunately for my sparring partners in congress, i'll be back soon. back to this morning's headline about the russia investigation, president trump told aides he was disturbed after being told that the special counsel was able to access several years of his tax returns. that's according to "the washington post." his lawyers warning that the scope has to stay within mueller's mandate. saying if there's drifting, they will object. >> no shortage of news. the russia investigation top of mind in moscow, where the country's top diplomat is speaking out to us this morning. keir simmons did that interview exclusively. keir, good morning. >> reporter: we know of three meetings between president trump and president putin at the g20 summit. one of them revealed only this week. and now, russia's foreign minister reveals there may have been more meetings between the two men. >> reporter: sergey lavrov was in the room when president trump met president putin for two hours this month. the two leers met to shake hands and later spoke at an official dinner, after putin was seated next to the first lady. now, interacted if they if they interacted again. we know they met three times at the g20. at the bilateral, at the dinner -- >> maybe they went to the toilet together. >> reporter: they met when they were shaking hands. did they meet at other times? the transportation department said they had no idea. certainly not amtrak. the white house? well, says a white house spokesman, they have talked to elon musk. and we believe our greatest solutions and ingenuity and drive from the private sector. not a signed government contract. musk acknowledged, still a lot needed to get normal approval. but here's what is cool. the hyperloop concept is much closer to reality, after a successful test in nevada. using magnetic levitation to hit speeds of 70 miles per hour. the next goal, 250 miles per hour. elon musk promises 29 minutes from new york to d.c. and a texas loop at nearly the speed of sound. but government approval? 'cause i'm worried about her. nobody ever wants to lose their mom. >> maria's mom has the same kind of brain cancer that senator john mccain has. it is particularly aggressive. but her mom says she's not worried about herself. only her daughter, maria. >> both of those women, right by each other's sides as they go through it. is there a correction, though? maria has something else. is there a connection? >> the doctor said no. and maria has a 6% chance of the tumor recuring since it's been removed. >> the people that watched maria, her career, she looks great. >> she didn't have to save her he head. there's a scar about this long. it's super thin. the doctor did an amazing job. and they knew going in, it was probably going to be benign. her career was on the line. there was a question about how she'd be. and amazingly, she's almost fine and will be fine. >> can you imagine going through something like that? >> this is perfect to do 2 hours or 24 hours. and then, you put the salt in. this will give you flexibility when you cook it. >> that's the thing about the skewers, you think they're easy. but often, the meet is overcooked. >> this is a great trick. things that don't have as much fat, put it in the brian. you want to do turkey as another thing. put it in there. and when you cook it, it's nice and easy. we're going to take some wings and we're going to secure them up. put it right through there. >> you soak the skewers. that's important, why? >> every time you put it on the grill, it burns. every time you burn it. it's not fun. if you soak it in water, it keeps it from burning. we use bamboo skewers. one of the things you want to make sure you're not secukeweri all the way out. scallops, you're going to take it, cut it in half. take two skewers. if you don't have scallops, you can use shrimp or squid. if you make them flat. >> how does this taste? >> the chicken wings are awesome. >> you do it the long way. >> another item at home, a steak. a fillet here. you want to cut it into cubes. if you just caught them in cubes. >> then, do you season this up, as well? >> yeah. something like this, you need one skewer. all you do is put some salt on there, pepper on there. and we have it here. >> keep it simple, salt and pepper. >> exactly. it gets to the grill. and i put aluminum foil on the grill. it prevents everything from sticking, getting too hot and creating a mess. >> you don't get the flare-up on the flame, right? >> yes. >> put the kebabs on there. you can put the fish on the grill, on the aluminum foil which i like. and the meat. the aluminum foil is going the prevent this from burning. >> you like the chicken on the foil, too? >> yes. >> i like to show you what y yakaturi sauce. >> which one do we like best? >> i like the scallops. >> you're going to put a little marin, soy sauce and some sugar. you cook that for 15 minutes. that's just the teriyaki sauce. and this is what it's going to look like. we go back to the grill -- >> while they're cooking, you give them business?
