Its incredible to watch people play armchair psychologists. Reporter host Joe Scarborough claimed three white house officials told him they could prevent an unflattering National Enquirer story if the program pulled back criticism of the president. And this weekend, the president is also heading back to washington briefly to attend a veterans event while hes also enjoying time with family and perhaps preparing for that big trip and that meeting with Vladimir Putin flnext week. Craig . Well take it from here. Thank you. Elise jordan is an msnbc news analyst and former Senior Policy Adviser to the rand paul campaign. Fill up rucker is a bureau chief for the washington post. Good morning to both of you. Elise, this is not a light news week coming out of washington. We have the health care battle, obviously, the visit from the south korean president. We have this voter fraud commission. And yet what dominated the news cycle was this twitter squabble between trump and these msnbc hosts. What do you make of this . Its really unfortunate that President Trump had to let his, quite frankly by this point, wellknown misogyny overshadow everything that he was attempting to accomplish this week. He also met with the indian prime minister. There were there was so much happening in washington. Yet his nastiness on twitter completely overshadowed his agenda and the failure of the Health Care Bill to get any traction. Phillip, speaking of the Health Care Bill, i want to put on the screen the tweet from President Trump yesterday. This is what he tweeted yesterday morning. If republican senators are unable to pass what they are working on now, they should immediately repeal and then replace at a later date. Heres what President Trump said just six months ago. It will bey with pe y witrep replace. Will be essentially simultaneously but will most likely be on the same day or same week but probably the same day. Could be the same hour. Phillip, why the change in strategy now . I think it speaks to the president s impatience frankly with the legislative process. He wants to be able to fulfill the Campaign Promise to get rid of obamacare immediately. Hes running out of patience. This idea of repealing first and replacing potentially months later i think is a nonstarter on capitol hill. This is a very complicated issue, and i think the senate, if theyre going to do anything, theyre going to try to do it together in one bill. So the political feasibility notwithstanding, what would be the practical effect of repealing obamacare and replacing it later . It would drag there out. A complicated system, you would repeal obamacare and go back to basically the Health Care System we had before the Affordable Care act. And then make another change later. The practical effect is that the businesses, the insurance companies, the doctors, the hospitals, all of the stakeholders in our Health Care Network in america would have no certainty. Theyd be operating in an uncertain environment which is pretty dangerous for that industry. Elise, let me ask you finally about this voter fraud commission. Can you talk about, is this politically motivated . If we cheap keep in mind President Trump said three million to five million votes were illegally cast. Some 20 states refusing to hand over information. Whats driving this . For President Trump, this is just a political distraction. He isnt trying to make a real attempt to solve the problem of voter fraud, as weve seen by his complete lack of concern with any russian interference in this last election. Whats crazy about this story, though, is that its uniting red state and blue state and angering so many secretaries of state. Im from mississippi. My secretary of state told President Trump they can jump in the gulf of mexico before hes going to part with any of mississippis voter data. Which this is mississippi. He really has managed to anger the right and the left of this. Never shortage of news. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you. It seems like theres an end in sight in the battle over mosul with iraqi forces just blocks away from claiming victory against isis. Nbcs Richard Engel is on the front line in iraq. [ gunfire ] its taken u. S. Backed iraqi forces nine months of street to street, even housetohouse fighting. Now theyre in the final stages of clearing isis from the city of mosul. The combat in the backgrounds is uncomfortably close. Thats 20meter gunfight. Reporter the fighters in any idea how many . No, not sure it matters, the daesh efforts are going to fight to the death. Reporter we went to see where the isis fighters, many wearing suicide vests, were holed up in an area now in ruins. When you come to the front line, you quickly realize how difficult the terrain is. This is the ancient part of mosul. This is an area of small alley ways, perfect for hitandrun attacks. Many streets too nary for american and iraq narrow for american and iraqi troops to pass through them. Its clear to see why isis would choose to make this part of mosul its last stand in the city. [ gunfire ] caught in this battle zone in mosul are thousands of families, many now escaping isis reign of terror, draconian laws, and public beheadings. This man saying he was reborn, thanking everyone he saw, even us. In a mosque not far from here three years ago, leader al baghdadi announced the creation of his islamic state, the socalled caliphate. Last week, isis blew up the mosque. On friday, iraqi forces raised their flag on the spot. This is the final days of the caliphate in mosul. What does that mean for the war against isis . This is a catastrophic setback. You cant claim glory and be defeated by Security Forces in mosul. Reporter a few more blocks to go to clear mosul, but they could prove previously the hardest yet. American commanders wont put an exact timeline as to when they think the mosul operation will be finished, but they say it is likely a matter of days. Richard engel in mosul. Dylan, how about a check of the weather . We had a lot of storms yesterday in parts of the country. More than 100 reports of Severe Weather. Today well see more Severe Weather.
