congressional baseball game will go on as planned tonight, just over the potomac here at national stadium in washington, d.c. president trump apparently wanted to attend. secret service telling him because of the late hour, they would thought be able to make the necessary, take the necessary precautions to get him there. meanwhile, it was revealed yesterday that the gunman had volunteered for the bernie sanders presidential campaign yesterday. yesterday bernie sanders took to the senate floor to denounce violence of any type. >> craig melvin where it all began 24 hours ago, thank you. we are also learning more this morning about the two capitol hill police officers being credited with stopping that attack from becoming a massacre. that in the words of one of the elected officials who was there. nbc's tom costello is at medstar washington hospital center this morning where congressman scalise and one of the officers are still being treated. tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: who is credited along with her partner with saving many lives yesterday morning. after an all-out gun battle in the park. >> shots being fired. and there are people running, possibly victims involved. >> reporter: this morning two u.s. capitol police officers, crystal griner and david bailey are being hailed as heroes for immediately returning fire and saving the lives of members of congress, family members and many others. >> if they would not have been there, this would have been a massacre of major proportions of innocent people in a park where innocent civilians walk their dogs. we have kids at practices. >> officers griner and bailey prevented that and my family will be forever debateful. grateful. it was a thin blue line that held today. >> reporter: the officers were only there because the gop whip has a security detail. most rank in file members of congress don't. >> the capitol police were firing from behind the dugout we were in, the first base dugout. i kept yelling back, are you friendly? are you friendly? we didn't know if there was another gunman or this was return fire. >> reporter: within three minutes, they had backup from alexandria police, but officer griner was down, shot in the ankle, later airlifted to the hospital. officer bailey suffered a minor ankle injury himself. one of the most seriously injured, matt mika, a lobbyist for tyson foods was shot in the chest. zachary barth, a congressional staffer shot in the leg, was treated and released. on the house floor, speaker paul ryan. >> it is clear to me, based on various eyewitness accounts, that without these two heroes, agent bailey and agent griner, many lives would have been lost. >> reporter: arizona senator jeff flake tweeted out he had personally gone to the hospital and met with both the officers and thanked them for saving his life. really, a sentiment echoed across the political spectrum. but, in addition, a lot of thanks as well to the officers from alexandria who responded immediately also, engaged the suspect, spinning him down and the gun battle going on as you know for ten minutes. >> tom costello, thank you. congressman roger williams injured his ankle during that attack and his congressional aide zachary barth was shot in the leg. gentlemen, good morning to both of you. it's good to see you. >> good morning. >> congressmen, forgive me for addressing zach, but this is the first time we have gotten to see him and talking to him. zach, how do you feel and what about yesterday? >> i'm okay. i'm very blessed to be alive. and thank goodness for agents bailey and griner. as you all said, without them, there would have been tremendous loss of life. and i probably wouldn't be talking to y'all. >> zach, you were shot, you were out in the outfield, you managed, though, to get yourself into that dugout. what happened once you got into the dugout? >> sure. so they started shooting at me, i was pinned down in right field. at that point, i got struck in the leg and made a run for it. i was running for my life. got into the dugout, and i was bleeding pretty badly, but i was really just trying to keep my head down, keep everyone's heads down, and prevent anything else from happening. we were -- we didn't know what was going on. there was a lot of uncertainty and we were just trying to stay alive. >> as i understand it, zach, you more or less jumped right into the congressman's arms, right congressman williams? what happened from your perspective? >> well, i was hitting ground balls on the third base side, our third baseman, trent kelly, not knowing frankly the shooter was probably just 20 yards away from where i was. then i went around and started hitting balls to steve scalise. i hit the first grounder to him and all of a sudden we heard this pop. and a lot of us thought it may have been a car backfiring, but then it came, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop and people were yelling, he's got a gun, get cover. and i turned and i immediately, it was a reaction, i guess, i dove into the dugout. the dugout is six foot into the ground, so it's a pretty far -- it's a pretty far dive head-first on a concrete slab, but i did it. when i got there, i was immediately with congressman flake and mo brooks. and all of a sudden here comes zach and he jumped in there and all of a sudden we were arm to arm and mo brooks took his belt off and gave it to flake and i. and we helped put a tourniquet on zach's leg to help his bleeding. and then we stayed down. and we had -- we had generations in this dugout. we had everybody from my age to the late 60s to a 10-year-old, joe barton's son was in the dugout with us. and people were protecting him. so we bonded that day, but it was a scary thing. and i just want to say real quick that the thin blue line worked. these two officers were fabulous. they saved all of our lives. there's no question that it would have been different if they hadn't been there. and we owe it all to them. >> if you think about what would have happened had that gunman not been opposed by those two officers during those first three minutes before the alexandria police got there. another thing that struck me, i don't know if you saw that animation we had, this gunman started on the third base side, went up and down the line around toward home plate and back up because he couldn't find a way to get on the field. had he stopped to think about what would have happened had he made his way onto that field? >> well, it would have been a lot different. and the amazing thing was, he was trying to get through a gate and the gate was locked. so he couldn't get through the locked gate. he had nowhere to go. but if he had gotten onto the field, we would have had nowhere to go. we had baseballs and bats to defend ourselves. so the lord worked his -- the lord worked yesterday. he saved us. and we're grateful for that, but also grateful for the capitol police that saved all of us. >> zach, i always wonder what it must be like to lay down your head on a pillow after the day like the one you had yesterday and what thoughts go through your mind. can you share how you're feeling and how you're thinking about what transpired? >> yeah, i mean, i'm receiving plenty of prayers and thoughts. the people around me, we've got a great community for houston, texas, plenty of people back home have reached out to me. and the people around here, you know, on both sides of the aisle, we've got a great community up here on capitol hill. and everybody has just lifted me up want andand i couldn't be mo blessed. >> it has to be one of the most watched congressional games in history. >> it's not softball, it's baseball. >> we know your thoughts and prayers go to people affected by this tragedy. >> we do hope people come to this game tonight. we hope the next day can be full of 50,000. it can go to charity. speaker ryan and i, joe barton and i talked about it, we need to play this game, it's baseball, it's america. when america gets punched, america punches back and we'll do that tonight. >> congressman roger williams and zach bart h, best wishes fo both of your recoveries, thank you. and now we'll turn to the investigation into the russia involvement in the 2016 election now led by special counsel robert mueller. "the washington post" says mueller's team is actively investigating that president trump obstructed justice. national correspondent peter alexander is joining us from the white house. what can you tell us? >> reporter: this could be a significant turning point in the investigation. the president the subject of a criminal investigation into possible obstruction of justice. just moments ago, president trump tweeted writing, they made up a phony collusion with the russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. nice. as president trump was wrapping up his 71st birthday, an unwanted gift from robert mueller. "the washington post" expanding that robert mueller is expanding the russian inquiry, now saying the president may have obstructed justice. investigators working with mueller are reportedly preparing to interview three top intelligence officials including director of national intelligence dan coats and the head of the national security agency mike rogers. it's a dramatic development in an investigation that's been looming over the trump administration since day one. the post reporting the obstruction of justice investigation began days after mr. trump abruptly fired fbi director james comey on may 9. the move appearing to confirm what comey told senators under oath last week, when asked whether he believed the president's request to back off the investigation into national security advisor michael flynn amounted to obstruction. >> that's a clon collusionclusi the special counsel will look to, to figure out what the intention was there. >> reporter: comey said that mr. trump did not try to stop the russia probe. not denying the post report but saying the fbi leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal. mueller on capitol hill on wednesday meeting privately with the leaders of the senate intelligence committee. the chairman of that committee richard burr called their meeting constructive. the latest headline 24 hours after the president's aides tried to knock down speculation he may try to fire mueller. the spokesperson said, while the president has every right to fire him, he has no intention to do so. and new this morning, "the wall street journal" reports that the former deputy of the national security agency wrote a memo documenting a phone call that his boss, mike rogers, had with the president. president trump reportedly cast doubt on the intelligence committee's conclusion that russia interfered with the election and tried to persuade admiral rogers that there was no evidence of collusion between his campaign and russian officials. >> peter alexander, thank you. let's bring in msnbc's chief legal correspondent ari melber. good morning to you. let's play this out, two of the key intelligence officials, mr. coats and mr. rogers, have already said that they didn't feel, they said this under oath, that they were not pressured in any kind of investigation. so is this obstruction investigation now going to boil down to the word of james comey verse the word of the president? >> probably not. that's because the doj doesn't care about their feelings in the way they put it in the now famous testimony. the doj cares about the feelings and intent of the president. this is by far the largest development legally in the trump era. it is a sign that the inquiry is not just about the campaign in the past, it's a criminal inquiry into the president's conduct in office, the present. >> and how is that likely to proceed? i mean, in a normal investigation, one might try to get the testimony of the person you're investigating. could mueller conceivably get the testimony of president trump under oath? could it set up a situation where the president could say, i don't want to testify because of the privilege or fifth amendment? >> all those things are possible. previously, we have seen prosecutors or independent prosecutors seek testimony of white house aides, senior officials and get it, it's tend to be hard to resist, but when president clinton was faced with this, and we are not there yet, they agreed voluntarily to do grand jury testimony under oath. whether a president would not agree and be forced is a legal question that has never been answered. >> ari melber, thank you very much. another big story we have been covering this morning, that terrible inferno in london. the death toll has raisin overnight and is expected to go higher. at least 17 people lost their lives in the fire that consumed a high-rise apartment building. and this morning many more people still remain missing. authorities are calling this the city's worst fire in a generation. bill neely is there for us again this morning. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. amazingly, this building is still on fire, the death toll rising, dozens still missing. most of them lived on the top floors of this building. among them, whole families of five, six and seven people. it's another terrible blow for a country that recently has been hit hard. high up in the smoking tower block, they are recovering bodies. down below, the shock is still sinking in. >> people calling mom, dad, their loved one, and i couldn't do anything. >> reporter: relatives wait helpless. >> i don't think they are alive. >> reporter: you don't think so. fire swept the tower in minutes as people slept. at least 600 inside. >> there's a family, there's a kid! >> reporter: they signaled with flashlights, tied sheets to escape. firefighters battling to save them. >> he's going, he's going. >> reporter: and distressing scenes inside, a woman failed her attempted escape. she and her children are still missing. like five of this man's family. >> the whole family went up, complete. >> reporter: there's grief and anger. the building recently covered in plastic clouding. no sprinkler was required, but there was no central fire alarm. a couple people have described this to me as a death trap. is that going too far? >> obviously, it was a death trap. >> reporter: and a death toll, police say will rise by dozens. so real anger here. the singer adele has come to this area. she visited last night. she's from london. she met residents, just one of the millions here really shocked by this tragedy. matt and savannah? >> al, thank you so much. to say that olivia wilde is a busy woman is an understatement. the actress, activist and producer is a mom to two young children and is now adding broadway star to her lengthy resumé. in her latest role, she's bringing big brother to the big stage. in the ad andation of george orwell's novel, "1984." olivia, good morning to you. >> thank you for having me. >> your broadway debut, just chose something light and frothy. "1984," this is heavy stuff. >> it is heavy stuff, but heavy times call for heavy stuff. >> now, "1984" is the book everyone read in high school or said they read in high school. >> it's the number one book people lie about having read. >> i know. i actually was thinking, like, did i read it or just pretend i read it? >> cliff's notes did well in "1984." >> this is not just staging, we were talking about it in the commercial. >> it is intense. >> in what way? >> it involves multimedia where you're shooting video simulcast onto the stage. cameras and back to the stage. there's a lot of light and sound work really immersivmmersive. and it is a different experience. it's not like watching a play, it's like going on a really scary ride. >> scary and it can get physical. talk about this. four members of the audience have actually passed out. >> yes. >> you busted your own lip during a performance. >> yeah. >> and you broke your co-star's nose. >> i did. but it was in retaliation because he broke my cosyx, which i didn't know we had. >> why are you breaking bones on this production. >> we are doing everything necessary to tell the story right. and it is an intense story. so we are throwing ourselves in. it's worth it. >> you play julia for those who don't know or didn't read it. the story is about an oppressive state, kind of, trying to police our thoughts. >> exactly. dystopia totalitarian state with surry va say lance and people are loyal to the party and bad things can happen to you. julia may or may not be a spy. and there's a love story that ensues and it is very intense. >> it sounds like it. so you've got to go home, you work late nights and then your kids who are 3 and 1, i'm sure they just let you sleep in. >> oh, they love to sleep in and make me brunch. no. they like to get up around 6:30. and it's -- >> is that the new one, daisy and otis? >> she's 8 months and he's 3. and they are amazing. it's great to be living my dream. broadway was something i always wanted to do but never felt like i could call myself an actor until i had done it. and now i feel like i'm earning my keep and get to come home to those little amazing people. >> jason, your fiance, just did a play himself. did he give you any advice, kind of? >> he did. he told me to be patient with the process. i'm a perfectionist and typically with a film you put something out that you know is right and ready. with a play, you go through this preview process where you put something out that is still kind of figuring itself out. and it's -- it's really a vulnerable and amazing and humbling process. >> you're working out the kink in front of everybody, yeah. >> in front of people. but the audiences know that and love to be a part of the process. we have had a lot of people come at the beginning of previews and want to come back after opening. this is a show people want to see a bunch of different times because you pick up different stuff from the storyline. so it is fun to have the repeat audience members. >> and we always say when you're here that you and i are on the same page and schedule. you have a baby, i have a baby. you have a baby, i have a baby. just so you know, i'm done. >> i'm done, too. >> we're done. it's a wrap. it's a wrap. your boy is the oldest, is he adjusted to the little one? we're about to give him the surprise of his life. >> my father's name is melvin bradley. he's 64 years old. and retired. you know, he started working when he was 16 years old. he graduated from high school and went straight into the military. he was a meteorologist in the air force. and that's what i remember the most is, like, my dad always did weather. he lived in germany for four years and it was just me and him. and that was probably some of the most precious time that i've ever had in my entire life. we hung out and, you know, he had to learn how to do a girl's hair. and deal with girl drama. >> they expect their package to be delivered. >> he worked for fedex for 20 years doing meteorologist again. the cool story about fedex is there were no meteorology jobs open. so he started working in the hub in memphis like you see on tv, late nights, you know, moving packages. and he moved up from, you know, working meteorology to being a manager before he retired. there was an opportunity to work for a local memphis station doing the morning weather cut-ins. >> well, we're starting off this morning with pretty mild temperatures. >> it was so neat to, like, wake up and see my dad on tv giving the weather for all of memphis. my dad and my stepmom got married september 1st, 2001. i can honestly say when he met her, his entire life changed. i have never seen two people that, while they met later in life, it's as if they have known each other since they were kids. so we have five kids and 11 total grandkids from 6 to 21. he absolutely loves all of his grandkids. and would do anything in the world for them. everywhere he's gone, he's had a grill. and it's really neat to see him pass that down to my son who now enjoys grilling and wants to learn to grill like his grandfather. i've never experienced a love like i have for my dad. you mean the world to all of us. and i hope you enjoy this father's day. >> reporter: all righty. well, we are pulling up right now in a fedex truck to melvin bradley's house. i don't think he knows exactly -- i can see him there standing with his family, his grandchildren, his wife, his daughter. and i think we're going to surprise him. all right. melvin bradley, how are you? >> i'm good. how are you? >> i have a fedex surprise for you. >> i don't believe it. i don't believe it. surprise, surprise. >> you are live on the "today" show right now. >> am i on the "today" show? >> you are. you can blame this young lady. >> you did this, didn't you? >> you thought we were about to do a commercial for fedex employees. i see you have your hat on. well, first of all, i wanted to meet you because i finally can meet somebody that knows how to do the weather. but not only that, but this young man behind you, do you know who this is? >> no idea. >> this is chris lily, world champion barbecue mavin. >> is that right? >> that's right. and he, you and i are going to do a cooking segment grilling your world famous ribs live on the "today" show. >> that will work. >> are you surprised? >> no, i'm not. i'm in weather, you're never surprised. >> well, what makes him such a great dad? >> he's just been so loving and just so caring. and he's giving great advice and just an amazing grandfather. >> melvin bradley, happy father's day a little early. we'll be grilling with you. we've got more from palm coast, florida, and the rest of the "today" show coming up. but first, this is "today" on nbc. all right. welcome back, everyone. we talked to green.nwyneth paltd now she's joined by jessica alba and will.i.am. >> they are here to co-host next hour. they are excited to hear that. >> it's news to them. >> we just dropped that on them right now. they are going to tell us about apple's first original series, the tech giant is entering reality television. >> it's called planet of the apps following in the aspiring app developer that is compete for the million-dollar start-ups. hi, kids. first of all, i like your outfit. >> thank you. >> tell us about the planet of the apps. >> well -- >> i feel like gary is really good. >> go. >> go, gary, go. >> thank you, guys. i think to show where we are looking at the reality of this new ecosystem that dominates our society, apps for culture. and we are looking at people pitching to us. we're mentoring, getting them prepared and pitching it to try to raise -- >> like an escalator, you have to say it fast. >> they have to compete for them to join our team. so we each have a team and compete for them to join our team. we mentor them for a couple of months and then they go in front of one of the top people in the world. and you see them in all of our offices because we mentor them while we're at work. so they get to see the type of people, how we operate our businesses. >> a cool concept. >> so it's a raw app at first. we are trying to add our two, three, four, five cents. >> sounds like "the voice" of silicon valley. nbc 10 news starts now. good thursday morning. a couple minutes before 9:00. i'm tracy davidson. let's check with bill henley with the most accurate neighborhood forecast. >> not bad at all. the humidity is low, temperatures are climbing in spite of mostly cloudy skies in easton. there are some breaks of sunshine. you'll see more of those during the day. what we won't see is rain showers. even though there's clouds around, it st dry. the temperatures are climbing. 70 in philadelphia, wilmington, trenton, 71 in allentown and 60s in south jersey, warm up to the 70s for jersey and 80 in philadelphia. check the roads with jessica boyington. >> we're seeing delays and we're watching a disabled vehicle. here it is right around eighth street. the delays aren't on the eastbound side past this disabled vehicle here. moving towards 95, no problems, we're seeing delays on the westbound side that was an earlier disabled vehicle around the ben franklin parkway area. but that's now clear. this is around 95 right around washington avenue, an accident where the two left lanes are blocked. today funeral services will be held for a 1-year-old boy who police say was raped and killed in philadelphia. found unresponsive at a home on south conestoga street. the boy's father faces charges that he murdered and sexually assault the child. a bill to prohibit municipalities from taxing or banning the grocery bags. it will protect jobs. but taxes and bans on bags can help communities fight litter. i'm tracy davidson. another update in 25 minutes. you can stay updated on the latest news and weather with the free nbc 10 app. to that end, the faith-based initiative offers. this morning on "today's take," will.i.am, gwyneth paltrow are our celebrity co-hosts. and then our summer dos and don'ts. and we're throwing a full-on animal house party coming up now. >> from nbc news, this is "today's take" live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> it is 9:00 on the dot here on the east coast. welcome to "today" on this thursday morning, june 15, 2017. we hear the music and are listening to "i've got a feeling" by the black eyed peas. >> can we turn that up? jessica? >> how did we all get involved? well, it was will's idea, really. >> yeah. a year and a half ago, ben silverman and howard owens approached me about the show. >> and they come from -- >> they come from tv. they are, like, big tv guys. i told them, hey, why don't we go to apple and pitch it to apple. so i flew up to apple to pitch them the idea. then everyone started throwing around ideas and never thought gwyneth paltrow, jessica alba and gary v. would be here. >> we know about the elevator pitch. but in this show, the contestants ride down the escalator pitching their ideas. >> it is kind of genius. >> that's a ben and howard thing. the production team jumped in to figure that out. when you have a limited amount of time, a lot of people don't realize a lot of the pitches, they may be scheduled for 30 minutes. by the time the meeting starts, the reality is you have a couple minutes to convince someone to change your life in real life. and we replicate that with the escalator. >> how does it work? they come down the escalator and give them your pitch. then do you choose if you like it and they become on your team, you're a mentor? >> we have to pitch against each other. >> then we all compete if we all want the same person to join our team. and we try to convince them to join our team. >> so does it get competitive?
