Soleperformer. How shes doing this morning. And the grand minufinale. Al has reached the last stop on his tour and hes making it an extra special one this morning on this friday, march 31st, 2017. This is today with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Its a friday morning, a rainy one, can you believe those pictures coming out of atlanta . I85 is a major thoroughfare down south. Its going to cruise major problems for commuters there for the foreseeable future. Well go live to atlanta in just a moment. Were going to start in washington, a Major Development tied to the congressional investigations of russian interference in the election, Michael Flynn who was ousted as president Trumps National security advisor is now offering to testify if he is given immunity from prosecution. We have two reports. Well talk exclusively to House Minority leader nancy pelosi, shes in our studios. But Peter Alexander is at the white house this morning. Reporter President Trumps former National Security advisor Michael Flynn, one of his closest aides throughout the campaign and the transition saying he has a story to tell and he very much want to tell it. He wants to avoid prosecution in a federal investigation thats deepening by the day. The president s ousted security adviser Michael Flynn telling the Intelligence Committee hell testify in exchange for immunity because of what his lawyer describes as a highly politicized witch hunt environment. On meet the press last september, flynn discussed immunity for aides to mr. Trumps opponent hillary clinton. When you are given immunity, youve probably committed a crime. Reporter a New York Times report that two white house officials played a role in giving classified information to the house Intelligence Committee devin nunes. A white house lawyer who formerly worked on house Intelligence Committee staff. And the senior director for intelligence at the National Security council. And overnight the Washington Post identifying johnizenberg as a third official who handles house intelligence files. Nunes denied the source worked for the white house. Nunes still refusing to reveal his source, but it was to back up the president s unsubstantiated claim that he was wiretapped. The fbi director confirms the russia investigation while rebuking the president s wiretapping claim. I have no information that supports those tweets. Reporter nunes makes the trip to the white house grounds to review those documents, returning to the white house the next day to brief the president after making this stunning allegation. The president elect and his team, were at least, i guess, monitored. Reporter the president saying he felt vindicated. The following day sean spicer dismisses suggestions it came from the white house. On thursday, spicer less forthcoming. Im not going to get into any further details on this. Reporter also the Intelligence Committee with one witness former fbi agent watts said that President Trump used russian tactics to his advantage. The reason it worked in this u. S. Election is that the commander in chief has used russian measures at times against his opponents. Reporter noting russians killed in the past three months. Follow the trail of dead russians. Reporter and just moments ago we heard from the president who tweeted mike flynn should ask for immunity, and that this is a witch hunt with democrats questioning the white houses transparen transparency, the white house announced that its invited the bipartisan leaders of the house Intelligence Committee what it views as newly discovered evidence that may be related to the unlawful disclosure of intelligence. To send the information directly to them. Peter alexander starting us off. Lets go to msnbcs chief legal correspondent. Boy, do we need a lawyer this morning. The president just said that michael flip should ask for immunity. Just to be clear, just because someone asks for immunity doesnt mean that they believe themselves to be guilty of a crime. The problem for Michael Flynn is that he has said in the past that if you ask for immunity, that you have probably committed a crime. Thats not the standard. It is certainly possible that given everything going on they are looking for extra assurances, on the other hand its worth it note that others caught up in this investigation are not asking for immunity at this time according to public statements. So what go into the statement of whether to grant Michael Flynn immunity. Whether he is a target, whether he has actual information thats helpful to congress from a policy level or helpful to investigators on a criminal level. And the department of justice wants in on this discussion, because if Congress Grants immunity, that could affect a prosecution down the road from the department of justice. What type of immunity . Are they interested in testimony, or russian questions, so a lot there the doj willon congresswoman pelosi, good to see you. Good morning. This is a tangled web, we were just watching how this has all come about. According to the facts as we understand them right now, it appears that this information about potential incidental surveillance came from the white house to chairman nunes of the house. Do you think donald trump was part of all of this . Do you think he knew all along that that information was in the white house and that he was part of this kind of orchestration of getting it out there through chairman nunes . Whether the president was aware or not was one thing, the white house, the Trump Administration certainly was, and it is very bizarre. I have a long history in the Intelligence Committee, i have been the top democrat there myself, i have never seen behavior this bizarre on the part of the chairman. Do you think President Trump was in on it . Wittingly or unwittingly, but he has not disassociated himself from it. So you take that and then you have general flynn asking for immunity, we really have to really take some steps back and hope that the administration theres some adult someplace who can say this is not fair to the American People. Are general flynn and this question of immunity, is it more important to find out precisely what he knows . Or is it more to potentially build a case against him . As was indicated, usually the prosecutors or the committee, as the case may be, would have to get some idea of what information he has. Now in the past, we saw in iran contra, the colonel took an immunity bath and we dont want people taking an immunity bath so that the Justice Department cant make a case against them. This is Michael Flynn and perhaps his violation of the law, and what that could lead to, i really dont want to think its about flynn to get the president , this is about flynn and flynn. One of the things the president has been critici maki against obama without offering any proof. One thing you have said a lot, is that you think that the russians have something on President Trump, you say what do they have on him . Youre asking the question, do you actually have something to back up that question . I just want to know what the russians have politically, personally and professionally on President Trump. Because why would the president he and try to flirt with the idea of lifting sanctions on russia and their behavior in eastern europe. Why would the United States put putin on the pedestal and diminish is greatness of america. You dont have evidence on that . Lets have the outside independent commission investigate all of this and i dont know how many more days where new news connecting the Trump Campaign to the russians needs to come forward, for the republicans in congress to say lets get to the truth, the American People deserve the truth, why are the republicans protecting the president . Why dont we just have the truth . So you see i think that both of the committees can do some kind of an investigation. I dont think that the chairman of the house committee, he should recuse himself because some of this investigation is about what happened you think he should recuse himself . I think he should recuse himself. I think he should not conduct the investigation because he was part of the transition, he was part of the transition, so for that and other reasons his bizarre behavior, why would the chairman of the committee go to the white house to get information that they could have conveyed to the president , bring it to the president and then take it to the press. So youve just laid that out, do you think that devin nunes knew he was part of this whole orchestration or do you think he was an unwitting participant . In other words was he used by the white house . No, he was duped. Thats the most innocent, most benign characterization that he was duped. The chairman of the committee, the Intelligence Committee is a Small Committee thats accountable to the country, to the president , about protection of our troops, having intelligence so that we can protect the American People, not protect the president. If the election were held tomorrow, which democrat could beat donald trump. The election isnt tomorrow, its four years away, we have a congressional election. Four years in advance, to even know it was going to be barack obama, four years in advance we didnt know it was going to be bill clinton. We have a wealth of talent to the party. Theres a lot of enthusiasm to do that right now. But im certain that many excellent people will put themselves forward. House minority leader nancy pelosi. Good to have you here. Now back to that chaotic commute thats playing out in atlanta after a massive fire caused part of an interstate to collapse there. The road is one of the busiest in the country, its shut down until further notice as firms try to figure out precisely what to do next. Reporter incredibly, this massive fire is still smoldering, that is a chunk of i85 thats missing right now. Georgias governor has declared a state of emergency, some area schools are shut down as the investigation as to what caused this ferocious fire gets under way. At the height of the evening rush hour on the interstate there is a huge, huge fire. Reporter an inferno erupting on i85, just south of downtown atlanta. One of the citys major arteries is shut down. It ignited real fast, real fast, at that point you could hear the bridge falling apart. Reporter the fire seen for miles after burning for about 40 minutes, an elevated section of the highway collapsed. We were aware of 85 collapsing, if there are units that could get on 85 northbound. Reporter the interstate at a stand still in one of countrys busiest cities. We have got spring break traffic, we have got the first braves game that came into county, so it couldnt have happened at a worse time. Reporter investigators are now working to find out what caused the fire, the area underneath was used to store plastic. The speculation that i heard was that it was some pvc products that caught fire. Reporter county the country, there are about 56,000 structurally deficient britisdg. Unlike previous bridge collapses in 2007 and Washington State in 2015, no vehicles were on the section of road at this time, thats because traffic had stopped minutes before when drivers first saw the flames. Remarkably, no injuries have been reported and right now engineers are inspecting this part of the road to see how much of it has been compromised. It could be months before this section of roads is repaired. Swing to swing former was act when she fell and landed on her back. This picture was taken just seconds before the accident. The show was immediately stopped, medical personnel attended to her, she was carried off on a thankfully did not suffer any injury and is expected to return to the show in the near future.
