press. >> that's how dictators get started. caught on tape. chilling new video emerges showing what appears to be the fatal attack on kim jong-un's half-brother. this morning, investigators hoping that video could lead to more arrests, as the manhunt for more suspects intensifies. and breaking her silence. angelina jolie opening up for the first time about her high-profile split from brad pitt. what she's saying about the bra breakup, their family and how she's coping. today, february 20th, 2017. >> from nbc, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthr guthrie. welcome to "today" on this presidents day. >> keeping the seats warm for them until they get back. >> looks like it went well. >> it was a lot of fun. a crowd in the plaza. with plenty to talk about, too. our top story, the dangerous storms that are rolling across texas overnight. mr. roker is here with more on that. >> we have thunderstorm warnings right now. the same line that caused big problems in san antonio. we've already got so many people, at least right now, 100 homes damaged. it's not even confirmed this is a tornado. these could be straight line winds. as you look right now, houston, under the gun with the strong storms pushing in. we have 8 million people under marginal risk of severe storms, local heavy rain, strong hail and gusts of 60 miles per hour. they could pick up 3 to 5 inches in parts of texas and louisiana. on the west coast, we have the pineapple express. we are watching this round of powerful, new storms making their way into california, with even more heavy rains and high winds. we've got our national correspondent, miguel almaguer, standing by in san francisco. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: al, good morning. after five years of drought, the extreme opposite. a deluge that just won't quit. you can't even make out the golden gate bridge behind me. we're expecting torrential rain and violent wind in the bull's-eye of another storm system that just won't quit. overnight, the leading edge of another devastating storm, expected to drop five inches of rain and bring 65-mile-per-hour wind gusts to san francisco. the bay area is bracing for rivers to rise again. roads to flood and the potential for rock and mudslides to bury homes. in the city of maxwell, where floodwaters swamped 50 houses over the weekend, residents returned just in time to ev evacuate again. >> some people have four or five inches of water in their house. it's not worth sandbagging. the damage is done. >> reporter: 50 miles s away, eyes on oroville. up to ten inches of rain are expected here. the surging feather river will be on the rise. in los angeles, they are cleaning up after the most powerful storm in years. a month worth of rain in a single day. the deadly weekend storm killing at least five, triggering water rescues and massive power outages. sinkholes swallowed cars and drivers. freeways collapse, breaking apart beneath a fire truck. >> hopefully this will be the last big one. but you never know. it's kind of chaos. >> reporter: now, it's northern california in the crosshairs. the start of a two-day deluge, promising to deliver a nasty punch. with the torrential rain just getting started here, we could see up to five feet of snow and blizzard conditions in the mountains. city officials say we should brace for flash flooding, power outages and major delays at sfo, a storm system just getting started. al, back to you. >> miguel, thanks so much. in fact, we are looking right now at flood watches and warnings. 18 million people, significant river flooding, as miguel mentioned, rock, mud and landslides likely. wind damage. 22 million people at risk for high wind watches and warnings. and you can see rainfall amounts anywhere from three to five inches of sierra can see 8 to 5 inches. and in such a short period of time, there's going to be more flooding and damage. >> when is relief coming? >> they'll dry out towards the end of the week. but in the meantime, it will be tough for them. >> appreciate it. president trump is starting his morning in florida, where he spent a third-straight weekend at what he likes to call his winter white house. this morning, he is ramping up his search for a new national security adviser, after the departure of michael flynn, while also intensifying his war of words with the media. we have two reports, beginning with nbc national correspondent, peter alexander. >> reporter: good morning. president trump beginning his second month in office, with questions swirling about his campaign and its possible ties to russia. also, new criticism for his comments for a campaign-style stop in florida, where to try to justify his travel ban, he seem to allude to a terror attack in sweden, despite there being no such attack. on this presidents day, one month after his inauguration, president trump is still under scrutiny for his campaign's possible ties the russia. the white house confirms receiving letters from the bipartisan leaders of the senate intel jeligence committee. asking agencies to preserve communications to the russian interference in the communication. it came when they had a private meeting with james comb beau. reince pe briebus says the reco request doesn't indicate wrongdoing. >> as long as they do their job, they will issue a report and the report will say there's nothing there. >> reporter: it comes as the white house is hunting for a new national security adviser, after firing mike flynn. four finalists interviewing with the president in florida this weekend. >> i'm here because i want to be among my friends and among the people. >> reporter: the president, back in his comfort zone this weekend, rallying supporters outside orlando, with a rare introduction from the first lady. >> my husband is creating a country of great safety and prosperity. >> reporter: mr. trump denying his administration is in turmoil. >> the white house is running so smoothly. so smoothly. >> reporter: and again, raising eyebrows. this time, seemingly railing about an unidentified event in sweden. >> you look at what happened last night in sweden. sweden. who would believe this, whede'd. >> reporter: the swedish prime minister saying, what's he smoking? the swedish authorities aren't aware of a terror event. the embassy asking the state department to clarify. which he tried to do, tweeting he was talking about a story on fox news and sweden. that was focusing on a filmmaker, who blamed migrants for a crime wave in sweden. the trump administration is ready to roll out a new executive order this week. and how the president might crack town on undocumented immigrants in the u.s. among the priorities, detaping those at the borders while they await hearings. >> get them the hell out of here. >> reporter: the trump administration says the memos are only drafts. and have not been signed off by the white house. after a little bit of golf and a little bit of presidential business, president trump comes back from florida late tonight. and here, white house aides say he's likely to sign the new immigration executive order as early as tomorrow. >> thanks much. david cohen served as deputy director of the cia during the last few years of the obama administration. no national security adviser right now. many of the deputies have not been named. if there was some sort of international incident, how equipped is our national security apparatus as it stands right now to handle that incident? >> we're a month into this administration. and the apparatus, and the process, to handle, the response to potential crises isn't in place. no national security adviser. the team that mike flynn left behind in the national security council is relatively weak. there are not even nominees for most of the key positions in the agencies that support the national security process. so, i think there's a lot of work to get done by the president and his team to fill out that team and to get the processes established. >> we'll talk about the folks who might be filling those positions. but there's been talk about having the autonomy to put their staff in place. if the president would trust somebody enough to name them as national security adviser, why wouldn't they be trusted to make their own personnel decisions, too? >> i think it's critically important that the national security adviser have the authority to put in place people, and to replace some of the people who are in place now, so he or she has a team that he could -- he or she could trust. and related to that is also this strange organization in the white house now, that's led by steve bannon, that appears to be senior to the national security council. this strategic initiative group. any national security adviser want to understand that they can put in place the team they need and how they relate to this steve bannon organization in the white house. >> david, based on the generals that will being considered to replace michael flynn, and the ambassador himself, what can we glean from this group about president trump's national security policy? >> well, president trump seems to have an affinity for generals. so, leaving aside john bolden. the other three individuals he's looking at are senior, retired military officers. he has other senior retired military officers in other key positions in his administration right now. that seems to be what he feels comfortable with. i think a little diversity of viewpoints could be useful. but each of those men, none of whom i know personally. but each of them have a good reputation. >> former cia deputy director, david cohen. thank you. as the president enters his second month in office, as we've been talking about, he's taking greater aim at the media. kristen welker has that part of the story for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning. as a candidate, president trump often targeted the media. it was a guaranteed way to fire up his political base. now as president, it's a tactic that still works. over the weekend, he turned up his rhetoric. and that's drawing a sharp, new backlash. as president trump tries to reset his white house, he's again using the media as his foil. lashing out during a campaign-style rally in florida. >> they have their own agenda. and their agenda is not your agenda. >> reporter: during that saturday event, the president mentioned the press half a dozen times, escalating a longstanding fight. >> i want to speak to you without the filter of the fake news. when the media lies to people, i will never, ever let them get away with it. >> reporter: the sharp barbs coming after the president called the press the enemy of the american people. >> i hate the press. i hate you especially. but the fact is, we need you. >> reporter: on "meet the press," republican senator john mccain laid into the president. >> you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. and without it, i'm afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. that's how dictators get started. i'm not trying to say that president trump is trying to be a dictator. i'm saying we have to learn the lessons of history. >> reporter: some of the critics are noting he used similar language that president nixon used, during a phone call at the height of the watergate scandal. >> and also, never forget the pressure is the enemy. the press is the enemy. >> reporter: at a press conference on thursday, the president went after the media nine times. blaming the press for badly treating his former national security adviser, michael flynn, who trump fired last week. now, the strategy apore ppears in full force, with reince priebus on the sunday shows -- >> the media is on siabscessed false, hallow stories. >> you don't get to tell us what to do anymore than barack obama. barack obama whined about fox news all the time. but he never said we were an enemy of the people. >> reporter: the press, a constant boogieman for the new president. >> the media, as i told you, they won't show this crowd. >> reporter: the president repeating a line from the campaign trail, claiming news organizations won't show off the size of his crowds, despite doing so during the campaign, and repeatedly showing live shots of his rally on live television. one month after the inauguration, the president is relying on these statements to people his supporters loyal. >> the media did not make donald trump. and they can't destroy him. his supporters aren't worried or they want to abandon him. they hope he hangs on. they hope he continues to stick it to them. >> reporter: while the president's top aides defended him over the weekend, his defense secretary, james mattis, seemed to disagree with him. saying he does not see the press as the enemy of the people. and adding, i don't have any issue with the press. hallie? ♪ ♪ 7:30, now, on a monday morning. february 20th, 2017. it is presidents day. and we have a happy, holiday crowd out in rockefeller plaza. we'll say hi in a bit. i'm hallie jackson, with craig melvin, filling in for matt and savannah. let's get a look at our headlines. a line of severe weather tore through texas. the system spawned one possible tornado in san antonio. several people were hurt. more than 100 homes were damaged. another powerful storm is hitting northern california today. crews spent the weekend racing to cleanup through friday's downpo downpours. those caused severe flooding and mudslides all across the state. flood warnings have been issued for all of the sacramento valley ahead of the new storm. and thousands are participating in not my president day rally. it kicked off outside of trump tower in chicago. they are protesting the policies ordered by president trump since he took office one month ago. also this morning, new developments tied to the deadly poisoning of the half-brother of kim jong-un. new surveillance video showing the moment it happened. janice mackie frayer joins us with that investigation. >> reporter: good morning, guys. another twist in this mystery, airport security video that's believed to show in real-time, the alleged attack on kim jong-nam. cctv footage reportedly shows kim jong-nam at the airport. a woman walks up behind him. appears to wipe his face with something. and immediately walks away. next, the video allegedly shows kim telling airport workers, he feels dizzy, as he walks towards a clinic, the woman who appeared to attack him, can be seen strolling through the crowded airport towards a taxi. the man believed to be the north korean dictator's half-brother, dead by time he reached the hospital. police are searching for four north korean men who left the day together the day that kim was killed. >> it's not a diplomatic passport. >> reporter: one north korean man was arrested in a raid at this apartment block. growing stronger accusations that north korea is behind the assassination. malaysia has recalled its ambassador from pyongyang. while north korea's ambassador here is so furious, he wants to expose what he calls a conspiracy. >> there's no clear evidence on the cause of the death. and at the moment, we cannot trust the investigation by the malaysian police. >> reporter: meanwhile, a malaysian man is in custody with two women. one of them believed to be wearing the lol shirt in that airport video. and a major development here, just in the last hour. the son of kim jong-nam has arrived in kuala lumpur. he will go to the morgue to give the dna sample that police have been waiting for to confirm without a doubt that the body is that of kim jong-nam. so, craig, this mystery continues to add a new twist. >> it is bizarre. janis, thank you. let's get a check of the weather with al. hey, al? and are some districts going too far? stephanie goss is here. >> reporter: good morning, guys. we did a joint investigation between nbc news and her local stations across the one kun. we uncovered cases where questionable police tactics were used, including elementary-aged children placed in handcuffs. >> i like robotics. i really like science. >> reporter: a pretty smart kid. school usually isn't tough for calleb. but one day in second grade, he says the bullies made it a nightmare. you were yelling at them to stop yelling at you? >> yeah. what did i do to you? >> reporter: it was a rough day, the teacher called his father. >> i walk in, my son is sitting like this. he's crying, too. my first thing is to try to get him to calm down. it dons on me, why are you sitting like that. he goes like this. >> reporter: that was the first moment you saw -- >> the handcuffs. yeah. like, wow? >> reporter: the security officer says calleb was screaming and out of control. he said he had to cuff the boy to avoid him hurting himself. >> he was 7 years old. and he reacted. and had an emotional outburst and was yelling. >> reporter: calleb's lawyer says it was an excessive use of force. >> instead of leveling with him or talking to him, he was put in handcuffs. >> reporter: when he put the handcuffs on, were you scared? >> i was kind of a little scared. but mostly i was mad because, like, he was -- like, holding my hand tightly. >> that hurts. >> reporter: the incident is one of many we found around the country where grade schoolkids end up in cuffs, fuelling the debate over the role of security officers in schools. safety concerns, in part inspired by school shootings, have led 43% of schools to rely on security personnel. many of them police officers. just a few miles down the road from calleb's school, officer holly zorns patrols high school with a bullet-proof vest, handcuffs and side arms. >> your goal is to counsel them. we're here for someone's safety. >> reporter: but data shows when there's a cop in school, students are more likely to be arrested. and an nbc news investigation found dozens of cases around the country of students facing juvenile charges for behavior that used to lead to detention or a note home. a middle schooler arrested for petty larceny over a carton of milk. a teen convicted of disorderly conduct for swearing. >> children as young as first grade, second grade, third grade, is being policed in the hallways. >> reporter: tori hutchison worries about something the school-to-prison pipeline. studies show that kids who face discipline in school, even for minor offenses, are more likely to get in trouble with the law down the road. >> we are treating children, children, as criminals, when they're children. why are we surprised when they behave the way we treat them? >> reporter: calleb's father says handcuffs leave an impression. >> what do they socialize handcuffs with? the bad guy wears the handcuffs. the good guy put the handcuffs on the bad guy. >> reporter: so, you're the criminal? >> yeah. >> reporter: the data reveals another harsh truth. students with disabilities are three-times more likely to be reported than kids without disabilities. and black students are three-times more likely to be arrested than white students. it's become a civil rights issue. >> certain kids get rehab. certain kids get counseling. certain kids get wraparound services. other kids get juvenile detenti detention. >> i've seen the racial bias since i was a high school student. >> reporter: getting this right is personal for kansas city superintendent mark badel. out of a family of eight, he is the only one making it past the eighth grade. he currently oversees calleb's school but wasn't on the job at the time of the incident. he believes school police play a vital role. but the jobs need to be clearly defined. police officers have become the disciplinarians. >> that shouldn't be the case. >> reporter: is it ever okay to handcuff a small child? >> i have a 5-year-old. and i would probably lose my mind if she was to be handcuffed with something that could potentially have been de-escalated by trained school personnel. >> reporter: a child doesn't get handcuffed if the handcuffs aren't in the school in the first place. right? >> and a process is involving the kids. >> that's a great idea. >> they can help make the paints and create with them. >> these young ladies are more responsible with the paint than my son. the paint would be on the walls, the floor. >> that's why we take washable and edible, too. these next random act of kindness kits. in is awesome. it's not just fun to do but a good teachable moment. >> this is a nice time to take advantage of the day you might have with them, to create the things. we use a simple lunch sack. this is a random act of kindness. we fill them with snacks or treats. hopefully they're passing on kindness and they should be grateful for what they have, too. >> you can use a lot of stuff you have around the house. >> hopefully you have it. >> this looks like something -- >> this is fun. and actually, it's fun for kids. it includes boiling water. these are snowflakes made from borax. we have taken borax, a deterg t detergent, old-school. and we added 3 1/2 cups for each cup of boiling water. when you pick a mason jar or vessel, it has a wide mouth. we're making any shape. they can have a blast to use pipe cleaners. we did some se met cal. and a couple of hours, you're going to see the crystals start to form. you leave them overnight. and in the morning, they look like this. isn't that fun? >> great for ornaments in the winter. >> it's winter break. let's put them up on the windows. it's so much fun to do. and these are finished. these are about to go in. >> you need the adult supervision more than the ice painting or anything else. >> it's a great project. something that will last. we've done the same thing with snow fakes here, but it's done with puzzle pieces. now, you have something to do with those. you don't need to put them in the trachsel. we've spray painted puzzle pieces. and used regular elmer's glue, after creating a snowflake shape and glued them together. you can put them in the window or save them for the next holliday season. >> and you can make them creative. yeah. >> good stuff for throwing away puzzles. >> if you have one of the kids that says, i'm bored or i don't know what to do, i've saken a twister spinner. and i made an envelope for every thing that's on here. if we land on left hand yellow, we go to the envelope that's core respond i corresponding. some of them are fun. and some are like chores. >> a risky spin. you can wait for them to say i'm bored. or you can say, we're going to do this on the hour, every hour. >> that's a great idea for mom and kid. >> what are these boys doing here? >> once a dancer, always a dancer. i came along at a wonderful time. and i was able to do some pretty phenomenal shows. >> miss chrivera. >> reporter: a siren of the stage, singing and dancing for close to seven decades. ♪ today, for the most part, actors, actresses, make it in hollywood or on television. and then, come to broadway. when you were coming up, it was the other way arnold. >> absolutely. >> reporter: you remained true to oyour origins. was that a conscious decision? >> i love the theater. the theater is filled with spirits and foot sprints and that live forever. >> reporter: the two-time tony award winner, headlining more than 40 on and off broadway shows from "west side story," "bye-bye birdie" "sweet charity" and "chicago." many of them is have been ada adapted for film. your full time is deloris conchita figueroarivera. how did it get shortened? >> not many people can pronounce it like you. and it was ridiculous. >> reporter: "west side story." 1957. it changed american theater. how did it change your life? >> i knew i was giving a message. we all knew that. we were directed by jerome robinson. he let us know. >> reporter: a play on "romeo and juliet," "west side story," the definitive broadway show, taking on race and ethnicity, a source of conflict for puerto ricans at the time, divided by dwa gangs and violence. at the time, this was a bold move. nobody had seen anything like this on broadway. >> people got up and walked out. i remember them walking out. but it -- it made us think. it made us think. it made us feel. and that's what we were hoping the audience would also get. >> reporter: can you believe it's going to be 60 years? >> avocados are versatile. they're a fruit. and the most versatile fruit. >> i love it. we're doing different things with avocados. how do you know they're ready to be eaten and cut and all that stuff? >> that's a great question. you go to the grocery store and you're picking them out, they should yield to gentle pressure. not squeezing the life out of them. if they're mushy, that's not a good sign. they're hard as rocks, not quite ripe. >> any tricks on slicing. >> my prefer method is to put horizontally around the avocado, twist. and then, just use that knife and carefully pop the pit out. >> if you're storing it, leave the pit in? >> if you're storing it, it's best to leave the pit in. >> first, we got a twist on avocado toast, right? this is ten-times better. >> this is called an avocado smash. and smashes are big in trial australia. a popular brunch dishkoech poac. we're going to do a little stir action. >> get the water ready for the poaching. >> you add the vinegar. >> it keeps it holding together. >> and we're going to pop in our eggs. >> can you make the eggs ahead of time if you had to? >> you sure can. you put the poached egg on at the very end. i say poach them first, leave them in ice water. when you're ready, put them in warm water and you're ready to go. >> while this is poaching, you're doing something with soy sauce. >> i make a soy sauce to top this dish. i put some soy sauce in the pan. and it will reduce about halfway. it adds a nice touch to the final dish. >> do we get to the smash part? >> the smash part. i love any dish that has an action verb in the title. i feel like i'm in a cartoon. you smash that up. you do some smashes. >> i'll do smashing. i'm into it. >> it's like a dump and stir recipe. lemon juice, lime juice, and feta. cheese, citrus and avocado are the main components to an avocado smash. and some ginger, skcallionscall cilantro. >> this is the final product. they're noshing on it. tasting table, what is the verdict? >> this is good. very good. >> you like it? it's got an interesting flavor. it's a little more -- it's spicier. it has soul than your typical avocado twist. >> it's a fun twist. >> the next recipe is another fun one. >> this is avocado fries with spicy mayo. >> who doesn't like this? >> this is going to take a game day to another level. >> it's fried. but it's an avocado. so, i vote, yes, it's better. >> fair enough. this is the spicy mayo. >> we're going to add lime juice, add that. and sriracha. >> who doesn't love sriracha?
