"today" "time" releasing this news. surprising news. this monday, december 5, 2017. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. i bet if vegas has odds on the person of the year, they're pretty much in favor of one person. we'll get to that. along with tamron hall here on day one of savannah guthrie's maternity leave. >> no news. i talked to her yesterday. the countdown continues. we'll see what happens. a lot to get to. start on a monday morning with that devastating fire in two days later and firefighters are still searching through debris. as they push deeper inside that building they expect the death toll will rise even further. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is there. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. the grim work here continues at this very urrefighters searchin debris bucket by bucket and told the search could continue another 24 hours. the death toll stands at 33 as you mentioned. a number that will likely climb. overnight, the heartbreaking recovery. the number of those who perished inside a warehouse dance party expected to rise. five fighters still searching through ash and debris ten feet deep. many bodies are still unidentified, and several people are listed as missing, like 22-year-old alex vega. his family, like others, may need to provide a dna sample for a positive i.d. >> i don't even want to say was. you know what i mean? he is in the prime of his life railroad wit flames exploding through the warehouse over the weekend, no official cause for the deadliest fire in oakland's history. those who lived here and survived believed the fire was electrical. >> a lot of people are hurting right now. the only thing i can think of is the people that are lost. their loved ones. >> reporter: with a maze of cluttered wooz furniture inside and a makeschiff pallet staircase, renters at the warehouse known at ghost ship say the property had two access points. a main door and emergency exit. witnesses say the fire started on the first floor. nearly 100 people were upstairs where a d.j. played music and most of the bodies were recovered. >> i woke up and my room was filled with smoke. like a fog of smoke, and i looked over and an orange glow coming through the window. >> reporter: never permitted for residential living or parties, public record show neighbors complained of blight. a city inspector arriving at the property last month to look into illegal housing, but unable to go inside. >> our district attorney, nancy o'malley, did activate a criminal investigation. that team is on the site. >> reporter: the building owner tells nbc news they never knew anyone was living inside. sunday night, the man leasing the building, derek almina seen checking into a hotel in these photos in "the daily mail." he tells us this tragic event consumes my every moment. my heart is broken. now, so are many others. a horrific tragedy with a death toll still mounting. those who lived inside the warehouse say it was common knowledge here in the city and even with city officials that many people were living inside it. the rent for some folks cost a few hundred dollars. others paid upwards of $1,000 and some tell us this morning they moved out because they were concerned that warehouse was a tinderbox ready to explode. matt and tamron, back to you. >> thank you very much. we are joined now by oakland fire chief melinda drayton. thanks for joining us. >> good morning. my pleasure. >> we have heard now this search of the building is slow, it is methodical, happening by hand and with buckets. can you give me an estimate what percentage of the building has been checked and cleared at this stage? >> at 52 hours into the incident, we think that we have cleared approximately 70% of the building. >> would you say based on the areas yet to be searched your fear is the death toll will go higher? >> at this point, we still have families at thebers unaccounted for. so we unfortunately believe that the fire fay tattfatality will higher. >> what can you tell us about the process of providinghese fa? you've asked for dna and possible dental records, i know. >> right. so the coroner, once we locate along with the sheriff's office in the building, there's a multipronged approach to vident, just as you said, the dna and fingerprinting, because a lot of these young members of our community had i.d. on them, but we're not able to use that as the pure justification, and assume what we find is reality. >> chief, a lot of people, of course, are mystified how this fire spread so quickly, the proximity of the fire department, the fact that you were on the scene within three minutes. how do you explain how it spread so rapidly? >> the incredible fire load in the building. again, we don't know exactly how the fire started. we're still at the area of origin. we haven't been able to get to that point to really do a thorough investigation, but as all the members have been reporting already, the large warehouse building was completely filled with combustibles, and once those got started, it was very, very, very rapid fire spread that made for a tremendously scary situation for firefighters and people trying to get out. >> and, chief, quickly, i know there weren't supposed to be residential uses for that building, and yet some of the people who live there said it was somewhat of a well-known secret. was it known to your department and were there fears that something like this might happen in that building? >> i will let other members of the city speak to that. i do know that the fire station that's a block away knows the building. whether or not they were ever able to determine that it was residential use on top of the original permitted use and occupant use of warehouse is unknown to me. >> chief, i know you have a very busy day. i thank you very much for your time. >> you're welcome. take care. we're going to talk to two survivors of that fire coming up in our next half hour. now to an alarming incident in washington, d.c. a man armed with an assault rifle opening fire insidepizzer he apparently chose that restaurant that's become the focus of the vin investigation. hallie jackson has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. police say the suspect, identified as a 28-year-old from north carolina tells them he came to this restaurant to investigate so-called pizzagate. a fake conspiracy theory that made the rounds during the presidential campaign, fake news, now with real consequences. armed with an assault rifle, police say edgar madison welch sent terrified customers into a scramble when he walked into a restaurant comfired at least one floor. >> people who ran in fromet wea >> the police department arrived on the scene immediately. set up a perimeter. >> reporter: this aim image taky a witness showing him surrounde his head. >> his manner was bizarre. you ask for a wait trit to anybody. >> reporter: police say he came into the restaurant to self-investigate pizzagate, a fake online conspiracy theory organized by hillary clinton and her former campaign manager john podesta. in cck down on fake news -- >> you just think, oh, you know, people are very brave behind their keyboard. you know? how did you get out? >> it was actually carmen that i heard coming down the hallway that said something about smoke and fire. another one of our resident artists was at the door, and he also said, fire, i immediately grabbed my fire extinguisher i had right in my kitchen area, opened my gate. looked down the hallway and saw 15-foot flames and what appeared to be a fireball coming towards me. i closed my gate. ran to my loft to grab my cat carrier. i was hit with a giant black wall of smoke that immediately rendered me unable to breathe or to see and then the power went out. i made it back down to my inside space. was able to grab a head lamp. gather up my cat, wrap her in my jacket and race out of the building. >> carmen, you lived there about 11 months. nicky mentioned having a fire extinguisher and we note this building was not coded for people to live there. were you aware of that situation? >> i think the thing you have to understand about the bay area is that it is incredibly difficult to find housing. if your camera crew wants to go three blocks west of here, you can find plenty of people who couldn't find housing. at some point when you need somewhere to sleep at night, it doesn't matteryou have that piece of paper telling you that it's okay or not. >> carmen, are some of the other residents, are they among the missing? >> yeah. we -- we lost one of our own in the fire, and, and we all knew right away. one of our other members tried to save him. he wasn't able to, and we all knew, and we all knew right away, and -- you know, i think he's still officially listed as missing, because they haven't recovered his body yet. but -- like -- we all watched our home burn and we knew that he was inside. >> carmen and nicky, we are sorry for your loss, are happy you're okay and thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> thank you for having us. in the meantime, we're learning more this morning about that apparent case of road rage near new orleans that ended with the fatal shooting of a former nfl player. the suspect released without charges, tributes pouring in for the victim. we have more on that story. >> reporter: matt, good morning. vigils were held this weekend by family and friend unable to understand why this suspect is still walking free. this as new details emerge about his past. >> reporter: this morning as a community mourns, new details on the man who shot former nfl player joe mcknight in an apparent case of road rage. >> let's make it clear -- we are looking for answers. >> reporter: turns out 54-year-old ronald gasser, who was released from custody early friday with no charges filed was arrested at the same intersection a decade ago for another road rage incident. according to the jefferson's parish sheriff. the alleged victim told investigators there gasser followed to a service station after he tried to report him for unsafe driving and punched him several times. those charges were dismissed. a source close to the gasser family tells nbc news, we send our thoughts and prayers to the mcknight family. we pray all will be patient and wait for the facts to come out. >> people can monday morning quarterback what we've done. mr. gasser is not going anywhere. he has been completely cooperative. >> reporter: the news comes amid new details of the shooting. the sharive saying mcknight was shot after he got out of his car and walked over to ronald gasser's passenger-side window. >> the three casings were located within the vehicle. the wounds are not consistent with being shot from above -- or on the ground. >> reporter: facts that could call louisiana's stand your ground law into play if the prosecutor does, in fact, decide to file charges. it says in part, a homicide is justifiable when committed in self-defense by one who reasonably believes he is in imminent danger of losing his life or receiving great bodily harm and that the killing is necessary to save himself from that danger. but for mcknight's heartbroken family, so far no consolation. >> i can't believe it. my child is gone. >> reporter: police say there is no video of this shooting complicating efforts to determine self-defense or murder. again, no charges this morning. matt and tamron? >> i had the ct scan. he asked me questions, looked in my ears. checked my hearing, my eyes, and next thing i know, i'm at cvs getting vike kinn. >> reporter: vicodin a highly addictive opioid painkiller like the one spencer was described. >> i was predescribed percocet. hit really hard carrying the football and by mack bas killing me. >> reporter: it didn't just block his pain. >> i liked the feeling but the relief not for the pain for the mental effect that it brought to me. >> reporter: both athletes were soon hooked. how many prescriptions were written for you? >> one prescription with three refills. >> reporter: when that ran out, what happened? >> i will to find a dealer that would sell them to me. >> reporter: jess was also prescribed vicodin after shoulder surgery. she says she used it a few times before, but never in this amount. once the prescription ran out, she started stealing from her grandmother's medicine cabinet. >> i would just take them and replace them with ibuprofen and she wouldn't notice. >> reporter: jess, john and spencer are not alone. in a cdc survey published this year, one in six students said they had taken prescription painkillers without a prescription. >> it's supposed to be for pain relief. unfortunately we see all too often the developing brain becoming seduced by this feeling. the release of dopamine in the brain, the feel-good center of the brain. >> reporter: john was spinning upwards of $200 a day on the pills. his parents caught him stealing money. >> i think that's what made him realize, oh, i don't have this unlimited funds. i better start finding what i can get high on that's cheap. >> reporter: the solution -- heroin. a fraction of the price of a prescription painkiller. the son who had never used drugs before his football injury was now a full-blown heroin addict. how did you realize you needed to get help? >> there was nothing else really for me. i was 16 years olds, using heroin. i was pretty much over, my life. i was depressed. i wanted to die. >> reporter: what's when his dad took him to newport academy in california, a teen treatment center where jess and spencer were also getting help after hitting rock bottom. >> i took roughly 45 pills of vicodin, and i, like, blacked out and my mom called 911. >> reporter: dr. harold says both doctors and parents need to probe when it comes to drug treatment. >> as parent, take a more advocating role and ask your provider, why are they going in this route? why is it an automatically an opioid and a painkiller? the provider needs to ask questions like is there a family history of addiction? >> reporter: but john's parents had no idea if there was a family history of addiction. they had adopted john when he was a baby. >> we know now that wheewhat th do. >> reporter: they were never warned of the addiction of a drug. >> this is what the doctor prescribed. this is what we're going to take. >> reporter: founder of newport academy has seen dozens of teens go from athlete to addict with one prescription. >> at that age, to introduce such a powerful prescription narcotic drug to their system is only going to have damaging effects, and we know that the younger someone starts using drugs, the more likely they are to develop an addiction. >> reporter: john knows that one prescription changed his life. >> i really, really was really angry that this had to happen to me. this kind of manifested itself through something that i loved so much and it was really everything to me, and through that i got this addiction. >> reporter: these teens are now sober and living a full life. do you feel like in some ways you're the lucky ones?
